El Volvo Masters de 2008 en Valderrama será una efemérides muy especial para el mundo del golf en general y para Sotogrande en particular, ya que éste es el año en el que el torneo se despide del mítico campo sanroqueño, cerrando una época plagada de éxitos, de grandes campeones, de fantásticos golpes y, en defi nitiva, de historia deportiva con mayúsculas.

Pero el Volvo Masters de 2008 no será un punto y fi nal, sino que está llamado a señalar para siempre la línea de excelencia que Valderrama ha hecho suya y que ha servido para darle una personalidad diferenciada a toda la zona de infl uencia de Sotogrande. Seguir desarrollando y profundizando en esta línea será la apasionante tarea de las próximas temporadas.

Los 21 años del Volvo Mastres en Valderrama se cierran este año con un balance excepcional y esperamos que este último torneo permanezca muchos años en el recuerdo. La infl uencia de esta competición ya es palpable y se deja notar en el continuo fl orecimiento del golf en la Costa. El proyecto del segundo campo de Valderrama sigue adelante y pronto será una realidad. Mientras tanto, las obras de construcción de la segunda cancha de La Reserva están ya muy avanzadas, con lo que antes de lo que podría pensarse Sotogrande contará ya con la muy respetable cifra de once campos de primer nivel.

La despedida del Masters ha traído también una buena noticia, la continuidad de la alta competición de la mano del mismo sponsor, Volvo, que seguirá apostando por la zona de Sotogrande al patrocinar a partir de 2009 el Mundial Volvo Match Play en Finca Cortesín. Este gran resort de lujo, que ya ha asegurado para los próximos tres años esta competición de enorme enjundia, será el nuevo abanderado del golf en la Costa y personifi ca los futuros retos que están dispuestos a asumir Sotogrande y su entorno.

A historic year

The 2008 Volvo Masters at Valderrama will be a very special event for the golf world in general and for Sotogrande in particular, as this year the tournament says farewell to the leg-endary San Roque course, bringing an era full of success stories, great champions, fantastic strokes and, in short, sporting history, to a close.

But the 2008 Volvo Masters will not be the end of the road, because it is destined to establish once and for all the reputation of excellence that Valderrama has earned, which has given a distinctive personality to the entire Sotogrande area of infl uence. Continuing to develop and excel along this road will be the enthralling task over forthcoming seasons.

The 21 years of the Volvo Masters at Valderrama come to an end this year with an excep-tional tournament history behind us, and we hope that this last competition will endure in the memory for many years. The infl uence of this tournament is already palpable and makes itself felt in the constant fl owering of golf on the Costa. Valderrama’s project for its second course continues to make progress and will soon become a reality. Meanwhile, building work on La Reserva’s second course is already well underway, so before long Sotogrande will have a very respectable fi gure of eleven top courses.

The Masters’ farewell performance has also brought with it some good news: the sponsor Volvo’s continued involvement in top competition in the Sotogrande area, with the Volvo World Match Play coming to Finca Cortesín in 2009. This great luxury resort, which has already secured this very important competition for the next three years, will be the new stan-dard-bearer for golf on the Costa, the embodiment of the future challenges that Sotogrande and its surrounding area is ready to take on.

iez años después, en 1985, el boliviano Jaime Ortiz-Patiño,

con varios socios más de la urbanización,

compra el campo y le encarga a Trent Jones de nuevo su rediseño. Ahí nace verdaderamente el campo actual que ya recibe el bautizo de Valderrama; aunque en 1988 de nuevo el recorrido sufre una transformación al cambiar el orden de los hoyos, pasando los delanteros a convertirse en los últimos para hacer más interesantes y difíciles los finales de campeonatos. Todo un acierto si se tiene en cuenta la leyenda que han creado desde entonces los hoyos 17 y 18, tumbas y trampolines de muchísimos sueños, de perdedores y ganadores con dobles bogeys y birdies de infarto.

Desde el inicio Ortiz-Patiño y sus socios tuvieron claro que querían hacer un campo exclusivo y de una altísima calidad para competir con los mejores y en esa construcción estaban cuando se cruzó en su camino en 1988 Volvo.

El inglés Mel Pyatt, que había recibido el encargo de Volvo de organizar un gran torneo en el Sur de España, le lanzó el órdago a Ortiz-Patiño y a pesar de que el campo aún no estaba consolidado del todo el boliviano recogió el guante y

aquel primer Volvo Masters de 1988 se convirtió en un éxito rotundo. Toda una leyenda como Nick Faldo fue su primer campeón, siendo escoltado en el segundo puesto por Severiano Ballesteros.

Al año siguiente Ortiz-Patiño compra todas las acciones del campo a sus socios y ya como único propietario comienza a consolidar Valderrama y el Volvo Masters en la élite mundial con sucesivas ediciones del torneo, donde

la extrema calidad y la dureza del campo son sus grandes señas de identidad.

En 1989 gana Ronan Rafferty y en 1990 Mike Harwood. Al cobijo del torneo, Sotogrande sumó en ese último año su tercer campo con la puesta en marcha del primer recorrido de San Roque Club; y en años sucesivos nacieron La Cañada (91) y Alcaidesa Links (92).

La cultura del golf crecía y crecía en Sotogrande a la par que la leyenda de Valderrama y Volvo Masters. Rodger Davis (91), Sandy Lyle (92), Colin Montgomerie (93), Bernhard Langer (94), Alexander Cejka (95) y Marck McNulty (96) fueron los sucesivos ganadores del torneo.

Pero la ambición de Ortiz-Patiño aún no había llegado a su límite y a la par del éxito del Volvo el boliviano tejió un sueño aún mayor: ser sede de la Ryder Cup. Valderrama confirmó su solicitud en 1992 y en 1994 fue declarado oficialmente sede de la Ryder Cup 97. El golf en Sotogrande ascendía a la cúspide mundial.

Con la irrupción de la Ryder Cup Valderrama tuvo que renunciar al Volvo Masters, que emigró cinco años al campo jerezano de Montecastillo, donde se produjo la primera y única victoria española en el torneo: Miguel Ángel Jiménez, en 1999. El impresionante palmarés de ganadores del Volvo en Jerez fue: Lee Westwood (97), Darren Clarke (98), Miguel Ángel Jiménez (99), Pierre Fulke (2000) y Padraig Harrington (2001).

Y la Ryder consagró en 1997 definitivamente a Valderrama y a Sotogrande como la meca del golf meridional europeo. Europa venció a Estados Unidos (14,5 a 13,5) y el campo sanroqueño se llevó todos los elogios del mundo después de soportar unas jornadas iniciales de lluvias diluvianas. Tiger Woods sufrió su primera derrota a manos de Valderrama y Ballesteros, capitán del equipo europeo, levantó la copa al cielo.

A la estela de la Ryder, Valderrama se consolidó totalmente en la élite mundial al ser sede de forma consecutiva de dos World Golf Championships. La edición de 1999 se recuerda por el ya famoso triple bogey en el hoyo 17 de Tiger Woods. Su bola, perfecta a green, rodó una y otra vez al agua del lago y el norteamericano bramó contra el hoyo. No obstante, el Tigre llegó al desempate con un deslumbrante Miguel Ángel Jiménez y se llevó el trofeo a Estados Unidos. En la edición de 2000 el ganador fue el zurdo Mike Weir; aunque esa edición también se recuerda como la de la victoria de Woods sobre el 17. El Tigre, en la última jornada, venció al ya mítico hoyo y se descubrió la cabeza con una especie de reverencia con la gorra que quedó para los anales de la historia.

El empuje de la Ryder creó el sexto campo de golf en San Roque: Almenara, en 1998. Aún se recuerda con nostalgia aquella conseguida publicidad institucional en las vallas de las vías de comunicación que simulaba un pack de seis huevos con las bolas de los seis campos

sanroqueños. Valderrama descansó en el año 2001 y volvió

a acoger el Volvo Masters ya de forma ininterrumpida hasta esta

edición de 2008.

La de 2002 es una de las más recordadas por la victoria ex aequo de Bernhard Langer y Colin Montgomerie al quedarse el campo sin luz solar tras varios desempates. En 2003 volvió a confirmarse la maldición española en Valderrama al quedar Carlos Rodiles segundo tras Fredik Jacobson. Maldición que alimentó exageradamente Sergio García al quedar los tres años siguientes sucesivamente segundo, tras Ian Poulter (04), Paul McGinley (05) y Jeev Milkha Singh (06).

La edición del año pasado fue muy especial tanto por ser la vigésima del torneo como por ser testigo de la retirada de Mel Pyatt, el considerado ‘padre’ de la competición junto al propio Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, que también cedió las llaves del campo a su hijo Felipe. Justin Rose se coronó doblemente como ganador del torneo y de la Orden de Mérito.

Estos años consolidaron definitivamente Sotogrande en el mundo del golf al aparecer tres nuevos campos en el municipio: La Reserva (03), San Roque New Course (04) y Alcaidesa Heathland (07). Nueve campos en el municipio de San Roque que suman la friolera de 171 hoyos, ya que Almenara tiene 27. No obstante, La Reserva ya prepara su segundo recorrido y Valderrama también.

Veinte años de historia y de crecimiento del golf en Sotogrande que culminan este año con la vigésimo primera edición y última del Volvo Masters, que a partir del año próximo desaparecerá definitivamente al reestructurar el Tour Europeo el circuito con la llegada de La Carrera hacia Dubai.

Este año el Volvo Masters cerrará, como en todas sus anteriores ediciones, por última vez el circuito europeo y conformará el ganador definitivo de la Orden de Mérito. Reunirá a los sesenta mejores jugadores del circuito europeo y entregará una cifra de premios récord: 4,2 millones de euros totales y 708.000 euros para el ganador, más de un millón de dólares.l

en years later, in 1985, the Bolivian Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, with several other partners from the resort, bought the course and commissioned Trent Jones for its design. This was when the current course, going by the name of Valderrama, was truly born, although in 1988 the course once again underwent a transformation with a change in the order of the holes, with the front holes moving to the back in order to make championship finals more interesting and difficult. This was a wise move given the legend that the 17th and 18th holes have created since then, acting as the graveyard or trampoline for so many dreams, of losers and winners with heart-stopping double bogeys and birdies.

From the outset, Ortiz-Patiño and his partners were clear about the fact that they wanted to create an exclusive course of extremely high quality to compete with the best, and they were working towards this when in 1988 they crossed paths with Volvo.

The Englishman Mel Pyatt, who had been given the assignment by Volvo to organise a major tournament in southern Spain, issued the challenge to Ortiz-Patiño and, although the course was not yet fully consolidated, the Bolivian took up the gauntlet. And that first Volvo Masters in 1988 was a resounding success. The legendary Nick Faldo

was its first champion, followed close behind by Severiano Ballesteros. The next year Ortiz-Patiño bought all of the shares in the course from his partners and, as the sole owner, he began to consolidate Valderrama and the Volvo Masters among the world elite, with successive tournaments in which the extreme quality and difficulty of the course were its great hallmarks.

In 1989 Ronan Rafferty was the winner and in 1990 it was Mike Harwood. Under the wings of the

tournament, it was in the same year that Sotogrande gained its third golfing facility, with the opening of San Roque Club’s first course. The following years, La Cañada (1991) and Alcaidesa Links (1992) were born.

The golf culture grew and grew in Sotogrande in parallel with the legend of Valderrama and the Volvo Masters. Rodger Davis (91), Sandy Lyle (92), Colin Montgomerie (93), Bernhard Langer (94), Alexander Cejka (95) and Marck McNulty (96) were the successive winners of the tournament.

But Ortiz-Patiño’s ambition had not reached its limit, and in addition to the success of the Volvo, the Bolivian had an even bigger dream: to host the Ryder Cup. Valderrama confirmed its application in 1992 and in 1994 it was officially declared the 1997 Ryder Cup venue.

Golf in Sotogrande was climbing to the summit of the international game.

With the arrival of the Ryder Cup, Valderrama had to let go of the Volvo Masters, which emigrated for five years to the Montecastillo course in Jerez, where the first and only Spanish victory in the tournament was achieved: Miguel Ángel Jiménez, in 1999. The impressive list of winners of the Volvo in Jerez was: Lee Westwood (97), Darren Clarke (98), Miguel Ángel Jiménez (99), Pierre Fulke (2000) and Padraig Harrington (2001).

In 1997 the Ryder Cup once and for all consecrated Valderrama and Sotogrande as Southern Europe’s golfing Mecca. Europe defeated the United States (14.5 to 13.5) and the San Roque course was showered with praise after getting through the first few days of torrential rain. Tiger Woods suffered his first defeat at the hands of Valderrama, and Ballesteros, the European team captain, lifted the cup towards to the heavens.

In the wake of the Ryder, Valderrama consolidated itself utterly among the world elite as the venue for two years running for the World Golf Championships. The 1999 competition is remembered for Tiger Woods’ famous triple bogey on the 17th. His ball, hit perfectly onto the green, rolled back time after time into the lake and the American golfer was livid. Nevertheless, the Tiger reached the

tiebreaker against a dazzling Miguel Ángel Jiménez and took the trophy back to the United States. In the 2000 competition, the winner was left-hander Mike Weir, although this time the tournament is remembered for Woods’ victory over the 17th. Tiger, on the last day, defeated the legendary hole and, removing his hat, he gave a bow which will go down in history.

The boost from the Ryder led to the creation of San Roque’s sixth golf course: Almenara, in 1998. We still remember with nostalgia

the well-made institutional advertisement on roadside billboards, showing a half-dozen egg box containing the golf balls of the six San Roque courses.

Valderrama took a break in 2001 before being reinstated as the venue for the Volvo Masters, which it would host uninterruptedly until 2008. The 2002 competition was one of the most memorable, with victory shared between Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie when the course was left without sunlight following several tiebreaker holes. In 2003, the Spanish curse at Valderrama was confirmed once again, with Carlos Rodiles finishing second behind Fredik Jacobson. The curse was taken to the extreme by Sergio García, who finished second the following three years in a row, behind Ian Poulter (2004), Paul McGinley (2005) and Jeev Milkha Singh (2006).

Last year was a very special year both because it was the 20th anniversary of the tournament and because of the retirement of Mel Pyatt, considered to be the ‘father’ of the competition alongside Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, who also handed the keys to the course over to his son Felipe. Justin Rose was doubly crowned as winner of the tournament and of the Order of Merit. These years consolidated Sotogrande’s status once and for all in the

golf world, with the appearance of three new courses in the municipality: La Reserva (2003), San Roque New Course (2004) and Alcaidesa Heathland (2007). The municipality of San Roque’s nine courses add up to a cool 171 holes, given that Almenara has 27. However, La Reserva is already preparing its second course, and so is Valderrama.

Twenty years of golfing history and growth in Sotogrande will culminate this year with the 21st and last Volvo Masters, which from next year will disappear permanently following the restructuring of the European Tour and the arrival of The Race to Dubai.

As always, this year the Volvo Masters will bring to a close the European Circuit and decide the overall winner of the Order of Merit. It will bring together the sixty best players on the European Circuit and award a record purse: a total 4.2 million euros and 708,000 euros for the winner, over a million dollars.l

The player hits slightly uphill to a fairly wide landing area guarded by trees. Accuracy and length are needed: you want to hit the lefthand side of the fairway, to avoid being blocked off by a group of trees that leads right up to the green.

The second hole: El Árbol

In the landing area a large Cork Oak dominates the middle of the fairway, but it can be a help, not a hindrance: a tee shot aimed at it and drawn slightly will give the perfect approach to the green because the fairway slopes slightly from right to left. If instead the first shot is to the right, the second shot will be difficult at best, because of a group of trees that encroaches on the righthand side of the fairway.

The third hole El Túnel

For a short hole, the green is spacious enough, but it settles into the hillside, with fall-away slopes on the left and back, protected by bunkers. A shot missed to the left will leave the player with a very difficult par.

There is also trouble behind the green - a deep grassy pocket backed by an unrelenting tangle of bushes. In the Volvo Masters a player once missed the green and took ten!

The fourth hole La Cascada

This is a Trent Jones masterpiece. “It’s probably the best of all my par 5’s”, he once said, “and in my opinion one of the truly great par 5’s in the world.” The hole combines great shot value with scenic beauty.

From the Professional tee, to reach the green in two, even with the Levante, will demand a long drive, followed by an accurate 3 wood or long iron to a well-guarded two-tier green with plenty of water behind as well as on the right. When aiming for par the player should favour the righthand side of the fairway with his second shot.

The fi fth hole Los Altos

A slight dogleg to the left, this is one of the shorter par 4’s, but it is also one of the most distinctive drive-and-pitch holes a golfer could wish for.

From the landing area on the left side of the fairway only a short iron is needed but the green is protected by a ‘bunker in the sky’ - a Cork Oak tree on the right front side of the green.

When the pin is partially behind the tree, the shot becomes much more difficult. But even the left-hand side demands accuracy, as there are traps back and front. The green is fairly small, has a ridge down the middle, and slopes gently from front to back.

The sixth hole El Vallejo

The view from the tee is dramatic: the player is 8 metres higher than the green, with a complete view of the six bunkers that encroach right up to the green surface itself. Though large, this green is difficult to putt, with an upper tier at the back that falls towards the front and right. The target area therefore is small. The green has the potential for some diabolical pin placements for championship play.

The seventh hole El Mirador

This hole started life as a par 5, but is now a par 4 for the Professionals, while remaining a par 5 from the Amateur and Ladies tees. The fairway is beautifully defined by Cork trees on the left and Olives on the right.

The eighth hole El Bunker

This hole, the shortest of all the par 4’s, is a slight dogleg to the left. The fairway is framed by Cork trees, so an iron from the tee is recommended. The green is slightly elevated and protected in front by a large semi-circular bunker whose contours are well emphasised, with the back left side nearly two feet higher.

The ninth hole El Muro

This is one of the more difficult of the par 4’s, partly because it is long but also because the green is elevated, with bunkers on both sides that make for a narrow entrance. The green also slopes slightly from front to back and from left to right. Thus the second shot asks the player a very searching question.

This is a dogleg to the right, with trees and bunkers at the turning point, 260 metres from the tee. From there the view of the green, with its artistic trapping and its superb Cork trees, is a delight.

In 1991 Colin Montgomerie hit his drive at the first play-off hole (against Sandy Lylem).into the trees on the left. Since then we have pruned more than usual. The green was rebuilt to USGA specifications in 1995 and is similar to the 9th at Augusta National where, if you hit short, the ball comes back down a long way.

This is a straightaway par 5 with a series of bunkers down the righthand side. The second shot should preferably leave the player somewhere to the left.

The green above is visible because the flag stands out and waves on the skyline. And the reward for getting there is one of the most glorious all-round views to be found on any golf course: a panorama of the Mediterranean and Puerto Sotogrande, with the Rock of Gibraltar to the South. Looking in the other direction there is the magnificent backdrop of the Serriana de Ronda mountains

With the Poniente, the long hitter can reach this green in two, but his second shot will have to be accurate as the entrance to the green is narrow and well flanked by bunkers. With the Levante there is no way to reach the green in two.

Se trata de un recto par 5 con una series de bunkers a lo largo del lado derecho. This is considered by some to be the most difficult hole on the course (but the 16th is also a strong contenderm. A thick forest surrounds much of the green, with out-of-bounds on the right and a severe drop down into trees on the left. The rear of the green has a slight ridge in the centre.

This is a hole without a bunker, but it is a great golf hole. There is a slight dogleg to the right, and from the elevated tee the player is challenged to place his tee shot on the left side of the fairway. ‘Position’ is vital because at 264 metres on the right-hand side of the fairway there is a lovely tree that can screen the second shot. On reaching the green, study the contours carefully.

The fourteenth hole La Piedra

The green, like most others, was entirely rebuilt in recent times. It now has three new deep bunkers in the style of Muirfield. The green is difficult to putt because there are many undulations. The best approach is from the left.

The fi fteenth hole El Puerto

This is the longest of the par 3’s. The green is long and narrow, but even when you hit it you cannot afford to relax. It is especially difficult to putt when the pin is located on the back right of the green: the tee shot must then carry a bunker, land back-centre, and roll to the pin, as the putting surface is sloping away from you.

This particular placement is considered a true test for a championship golfer. Because of its marvellous vantage points, this hole is a magnet for the knowledgable spectator.

Keep left, even though this is a dogleg to the right. The tee shot is to the crest of a hill, where the fairway is narrow and slopes from right to left. The green is beautifully built into the contours of the land, offering a variety of good pin placements. Este hoyo fue rediseñado totalmente, tras muchas deliberaciones sobre los pros y los contras de Seve Ballesteros y Roger Rulewich, cada uno por su lado, sin mencionar los prodigios de ingeniería que requirió. El hoyo era poco más que un larguísimo par 5, pero ahora el segundo golpe plantea al jugador una duda tentadora: ¿debe intentar salvar el agua para buscar un birdie o un eagle, o debe conservar? En el Volvo Masters de 1995, Miguel Ángel Jiménez consiguió aquí el primer albatros de su vida y el primero que se había visto en Valderrama.La alta pared de piedra a la derecha de la segunda zona de caída es una verdadera muralla, tal como fueron construidas hace siglos, generalmente como parte de una fortificación. Actúa como un muro de contención y también ofrece una espectacular atalaya.

Es un gran hoyo final, con una curva a la izquierda en la que la mejor zona de caída es hacia delante, más o menos a unos 235 metros. Un jugador audaz que decide volar sobre los árboles de la izquierda puede lograr el approach más fácil a un bien protegido green. No es fácil superar el desafío de este hoyo, pues si el jugador sale con un hierro tendrá mucho que hacer con su segundo golpe.

This is a born-again hole, the outcome of much agonising and deliberation plus the inputs, separately, of Seve Ballesteros and Roger Rulewich, not to mention prodigious feats of engineering.

The hole used to be not much more than a long, long par 5. Now the second shot presents the player with a tantalising question: should he try to carry the water for a birdie or eagle, or should he lay up? (In the 1995 Volvo Masters, Miguel Angel Jimenez scored the first albatross of his life here, and the first that Valderrama had ever seen.

The high stone wall to the right of the second landing area is a true gabion, just as they were built centuries ago, usually as part of a fortification. It acts as a retaining wall and also provides a spectacular viewing platform.

‘This is a great finishing hole - a dogleg to the left, with the safest landing area straight ahead at about 235 metres. A daring player who chooses instead to fly over the trees on the left can set up the easiest approach to a well-protected green which is slightly crowned. It is not easy to duck the challenge of this hole, as a player who takes an iron off the tee may have too much to do with his second shot.

Un birdie en el hoyo 10 fue decisivo para ganar el campeonato y proclamarse número 1 de Europa.

La vigésima edición del torneo estuvo cargada de tensión hasta el último minuto. El campeón, Justin Rose, derrotó en el segundo hoyo del desempate a su compatriota Simon Dyson y al danés Soren Kjeldsen, proclamándose ganador.

Bajo condiciones suaves y soleadas, pero con un viento caprichoso, Valderrama presentó un aspecto cuidado y formidable para acoger a 55 jugadores de los 60 mejores del ranking europeo.

El irlandés Graeme McDowell firmó una tarjeta de 68 golpes con tres bajo par, siendo el mejor del primer día, con uno menos que su compatriota y ganador del Volvo Masters 2005 Paul McGinley. A dos del líder y empatados en tercer lugar quedarían el australiano Peter O’Malley y el inglés Justin Rose, que se jugaba la Orden del Mérito frente a Padraig Harrington.

Rose fue el único jugador con números rojos cuando, al término de la segunda jornada, su nombre ocupaba ya el primer puesto de la clasificación con una ventaja de cuatro golpes sobre Padraig Harrington. Iba por el buen camino, tras terminar esa jornada con 68 golpes, con tres bajo par.

La tercera jornada no hubo cambios en la cabeza. Rose mantuvo una ventaja de cuatro golpes sobre su rival por la Orden de Mérito, Padraig Harrington, y el inglés Simon Dyson.

En la jornada final, Justin Rose consiguió su propósito y ganó de una tacada el torneo y la Orden del Mérito. Aunque su ventaja de 4 golpes al comienzo del día no le sirvió de mucho, pues tuvo que superar un sensacional play-off a muerte súbita frente a Simon Dyson y Dane Soren Kjeldsen.

El trío hizo par en el primer hoyo extra, el 18, y los tres se situaron a unos 20 pies del hoyo 10, el segundo del play-off, donde fue Rose quien logró el objetivo con un par desde 15 pies, mientras Kjeldsen y Dyson fallaron.Desde entonces los aficionados esperan impacientes el desenlace de este año, la última e histórica cita del Volvo Masters con Valderrama.●

On the final day Justin Rose achieved his goal and with a single shot won the tournament and the Order of Merit. However, his four-stroke lead at the start of the day became irrelevant, and he had to win a sensa-tional sudden-death playoff against Simon Dyson and Dane Soren Kjeldsen. The three of them scored a par on the first extra hole, the 18th, and positioned them-selves at around 20 feet from the 10th, the second hole of the playoff, where it was Rose who managed a putt from 15 feet, while Kjeldsen and Dyson missed.

Since then fans have been waiting impatiently for this year’s tournament, the last and historic Volvo Masters event at Valderrama. ●

Like a kind of generational relay, Volvo has moved house in Andalusia from Club de Golf

Valderrama (San Roque, Cadiz province) to take up residence in 2009 at Finca Cortesín

Golf Club (Casares, Malaga province). The two courses are just 25 kilometres apart but

they are the perfect example of this change taking place in the golf world following the

arrival on the scene of the Race to Dubai, which has forced Volvo to trade in the Masters

for the World Match Play.

From Valderrama, a course that has already established itself in its own right among the world elite thanks to its unquestionable quality, a Ryder Cup venue and the home of the Volvo Master tournament, which also established itself as one of the most important on the world circuit with the 60 best players of the European Tour taking part and twenty or so competitions having been played, Volvo moves on to a recently built course, Finca Cortesín, which opened in 2006, and a tournament which despite its almost 40 years of history at Wentworth (England), has been reborn with a new format, spirit and venue: the Volvo Match Play.

This change of venue and tournament for Volvo also happens to coincide with a generation change that the Swedish car manufacturer underwent last year, with Klas Magunusson taking over from Mel Pyatt as the Volvo Event Management golf manager.

Finca Cortesín, which has always been destined for great things, with a magnificent course and an even better resort, will host the first three revamped Volvo Match Play tournaments, by virtue of an agreement already reached between Cortesín, Volvo and the sports event company IMG.

The new tournament will share over 3.25 million euros between just 16 players under the match-play scoring system, who will qualify according to the following criteria: Title defender: Ernie Els (because the 2008 tournament will not be held); the top player in the World Ranking in each continent: Europe, Africa/Middle East, United States, Latin America, Asia and Australasia; the top four players (who have not already qualified) in the World Ranking; the top four players (who have not already qualified) in the Race to Dubai (the European Circuit Order of Merit); and the champion of the Volvo Open in China.

Este último año ha sido muy duro hasta el lanzamiento del hotel. Estamos muy contentos de haberlo conseguido el día 1 de octubre y de que todo el mundo que lo ha visitado se haya quedado impresionado. Hemos intentado hacer algo muy distinto a lo que había en la Costa del Sol en cuanto a arquitectura, servicios, tipo de hotel, etc. Creo que esto nos ayudará a posicionarlo y a desarrollar el resort.

Sí, ha sido casualidad, pero la hemos aprovechado para organizar un acto oficial de presentación a los medios de comunicación, además de que aquí se juega el torneo de la prensa y el lunes ‘corporate day’, lo que ha de servir para que la gente aprecie la calidad del proyecto. El Hotel Cortesín es difícil

de describir, hay que venir a verlo para darse cuenta de nuestro concepto y de su calidad. De hecho, ya estamos prácticamente al completo del 22 al 27 de septiembre de 2009, la semana del Volvo Match Play.

Es un hotel muy distinto a los demás 5 estrellas de la Costa del Sol. No es un resort vacacional típico, pues sólo tiene 67 habitaciones, suites en su gran mayoría, con vistas al mar y al campo de golf. Además, a principios de 2009 contaremos con 16 villas de 4 habitaciones con todos los servicios del hotel a su disposición. Una de nuestras ideas básicas ha sido la de ofrecer grandes espacios: el concepto del lujo está asociado aquí al espacio, con grandes alturas de techos, grandes piscinas y espaciosos lugares de uso común. Hemos ido más hacia un concepto de ‘boutique hotel’, con un servicio excelente y muy personalizado. El spa, cuya inauguración coincide

con el Volvo Masters, va también en esa línea, con un concepto de máximo lujo, con piscina climatizada de 25 metros, todo tipo de tratamientos y, por ejemplo, con una de las primeras duchas de nieve instaladas en España. No hemos escatimado en nada.

El próximo verano tendremos en funcionamiento un ‘beach club’ con un concepto muy similar al del hotel y que también estará abierto para los socios del club de golf, que ya son 140 y esperamos que lleguen a 750.

Sí, el hotel está planteado como un destino en sí mismo. No estamos ni en Sotogrande ni en Marbella, nuestra idea es ofrecer un destino con todo a disposición del cliente, incluidos restaurantes de primer nivel, con el objetivo que pueda descansar en el hotel o pasar sus vacaciones disfrutando de su estancia.

El chef holandés Schilo van Coevorden dirige el área de restauración y bebidas. De prestigio reconocido en la Guía Michelín, es el titular del restaurante Schilo, con influencias de las cocinas japonesa, china, tailandesa y árabe. Además tendrá a su cargo el restaurante ‘El Jardín’, más en la línea de la cocina tradicional española, muy demandada por el cliente extranjero. Todo ello se completa con los restaurantes de piscina y el del club de golf.

Acabamos de terminar el ‘Jack Nicklaus Coaching Studio’, con toda la tecnología del grupo, sensores de movimiento, análisis interactivo de movimiento, cámaras súper lentas… Es algo único en España y de los primeros de Europa. Queremos enseñar golf de una forma innovadora.

Sencillamente es la acción de marketing más importante de Finca Cortesín y tenemos muchas esperanzas de que nos sirva para lanzar nuestra marca y el resort. Sabemos que tras el Volvo Masters de Valderrama se nos mirará con lupa. Tenemos el listón altísimo y no será fácil mantener el nivel, pero vamos a trabajar duro.

Tiene tres cosas fundamentales: el diseño, un altísimo nivel de mantenimiento y unas vistas espectaculares al Mediterráneo y a la Sierra Bermeja. Hay pocos campos en la Costa del Sol, por no decir ninguno, que tengan este entorno natural. Sobre todo lo que nos caracteriza es un standard de servicios altísimo, en la línea de los country clubs de Estados Unidos.

Constará de 198 villas que construimos nosotros mismos para mantener el estilo arquitectónico, además de apartamentos de lujo. Las primeras unidades se acaban de entregar, pero la culminación de todo el proyecto se prolongará s lo largo de los próximos 10 a 12 años. ●

Hotel Cortesín is difficult to describe; you have to see it in order to understand our concept and its quality. In fact, we are already almost at full capacity from September 22 to 27, 2009, the week of the Volvo Match Play.

It’s very different to the other 5-star hotels of the Costa del Sol. It’s not a typical holiday resort; it only has 67 rooms, most of which are suites, with views over the sea and the golf course. Furthermore, at the beginning of 2009 we will have 16 4-bedroom villas with all of the services of the hotel at their disposal. One of our basic ideas was to offer large spaces: the concept of

luxury here is associated with space, with high ceilings, large pools and spacious communal areas. We have leaned more towards a boutique hotel concept, with excellent and personalised service. The spa, the opening of which coincides with the Volvo Masters, also follows this line, with a concept of maximum luxury, a 25-metre heated pool, all kinds of treatments and, for example, one of the first snow showers installed in Spain. We haven’t skimped on anything.

Next summer we will have a beach club in operation, with a very similar concept to the hotel, which will also be open to members of the golf club, of whom there are already 140. We expect this figure to reach 750.

Yes. The hotel is envisaged as a destination in its own right. We are neither in Sotogrande nor in Marbella; our aim is to offer a destination with everything the customers need, including first-class restaurants, so they can relax at the hotel and enjoy their holiday.

The Dutch chef Schilo van Coevorden manages the restaurant and drinks side of things. A renowned Michelin Guide chef, he owns the Schilo restaurant, with influences from Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Arabic cuisine. He will also run the ‘El Jardín’ restaurant, providing a more traditional Spanish cuisine, which is in high demand among foreign customers. All of this is complemented by the pool and golf club restaurants.

We have just completed the ‘Jack Nicklaus Coaching Studio’ with all of the group’s technology: movement sensors, interactive movement analysis, super-slow-motion cameras… something unique in Spain and one of the first in Europe. We want to teach golf in an innovative way.

It is quite simply Finca Cortesín’s most important marketing operation and we are very hopeful that it will act as a springboard for our brand and the resort. We know that, after the Volvo Masters, Valderrama will be watching us closely. We have set ourselves very high standards and they will not be easy to maintain, but we are going to work very hard to do so.

It has three essential elements: the design, a very high standard of maintenance and spectacular views over the Mediterranean and Sierra Bermeja. There are few, if any, courses on the Costa del Sol with this kind of natural setting. The thing that characterises us above all is an extremely high standard of services, on a par with the country clubs of the United States.

It will have 198 villas which we will build ourselves in order to maintain the architectural style, as well as luxury apartments. The first units have just been delivered, but the project will continue for the next 10 to 12 years. ●

Seve, con sólo 16 años, en 1974, da el salto al profesionalismo y avisa de qué clase encierra ya en el torneo Lancome de 1975, donde termina en tercer lugar. La temporada siguiente continúa su as-censo, quedándose a muy poco de ganar su primer British, cosa que no tardaría en conseguir.

El Open Británico le llega en 1979, con-virtiéndose en un auténtico fenómeno internacional y, por añadidura, en un personaje muy popular en España, donde empieza a ser equiparado a otras figuras similares a la suya, de deportistas geniales que convirtieron en populares disciplinas minoritarias hasta entonces. Seve entra a formar parte con todo dere-cho del selecto club de los Federico Mar-tín Bahamontes, Ángel Nieto o Manolo Santana. El golf se convirtió de pronto en un deporte seguido por grandes ma-sas, sentándose las bases de lo que ha llegado a ser hoy en España.

Seve continuó escribiendo páginas im-borrables en el British Open, que volvió a ganar en otras dos ocasiones, y se con-virtió en ‘Súper Sevy’, logrando, entre otros muchos logros, dos chaquetas verdes de Augusta y cinco Mundiales Match Play, sin olvidar sus siete victo-rias en la Ryder Cup, la última, como capitán, en la imborrable edición de 1997 en Valderrama.

Seve ha recibido innumerables galardones y reconocimientos a lo largo de su carrera, en-tre otros El Premio Príncipe de Asturias de los Deportes (1989), aún en pleno apogeo de su trayectoria, pero ya cerca de comenzar el declive, que se hizo definitivo con el anun-cio de su retirada en junio de 2007.

De todos esos honores y trofeos, sin em-bargo, el mejor que ha tenido y todavía tiene Seve es el calor de los aficionados, que le han reconocido como el mejor ju-gador del mundo de su generación, sólo comparable a lo que en la actualidad supone Tiger Woods. Valderrama y So-togrande vieron en acción al mejor Seve y ahora, con motivo del último Volvo Masters, su figura y su personalidad están más presentes que nunca en este campo por el que tanto hizo para labrar su leyenda. Seve, at just 16 years of age, in 1974, made the leap to professionalism and gave an early glimpse of his class in the 1975 Lan-come tournament, finishing in third place. The following season he continued his rise among the ranks, almost winning his first British Open, a title that he would clinch before long.

It was in 1979 that he won the Open, making him a true international phenomenon and, to boot, a very popular celebrity in Spain, where they started comparing him to other similar figures, sportsmen who popularised disciplines that had been minority sports until then.

Seve became a fully fledged member of a select club of great Spanish sportsmen, alongside Fe-derico Martín Bahamontes, Ángel Nieto and Manolo Santana. Golf soon became a sport followed by the masses, establishing the foun-dations for what it has now become in Spain. Seve continued making a lasting impression in

the British Open, which he won on two more occasions, and he became ‘Super Sevy’, achiev-ing, among many other successes, two green jackets at Augusta and five World Match Play titles, not to mention his seven victories in the Ryder Cup; the last, as captain, was in the unforgettable 1997 competition at Valder-

rama. Seve has received countless awards and distinctions throughout his life, including the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports in 1989, at the height of his career but approaching his decline, which concluded with his retirement in June 2007.

Of all of these honours and trophies, however, the best Seve had and still has is the affection of his fans, who acknowledge him as the best player in the world of his generation, compara-ble only to Tiger Woods in the present day. Valderrama and Sotogrande witnessed Seve at

his best and now, to mark the occasion of the last Volvo Masters, his figure and personality are more present than ever on this course, the legend of which he did so much to carve out.

At these difficult times, in his fight against ill-ness, the tribute from Valderrama and his thou-sands of fans should also help the great Balles-teros to victory in this delicate tournament.Here’s to you, Seve! l

Esta gran área comercial intentará competir con el hasta ahora centro neurálgico del lujo en la Costa del sol, Puerto Banús, a sólo 50 kilómetros de distancia. Para ello cuenta con un diseño más moderno en el que, por ejemplo, se ha conseguido peatonalizar completamente la zona comercial gracias a la creación de un gran parking subterráneo donde los visitantes podrán dejar sus vehículos y desde el que podrán acceder con total comodidad al paseo marítimo y a los yates atracados frente a él.

Los desarrollos urbanísticos también continúan creciendo a través de la construcción de dos nuevos campos de golf en las mejores zonas de Sotogrande. De un lado, Valderrama quiere disponer de una segunda cancha que, posteriormente, acogerá en sus proximidades un nuevo establecimiento hotelero, mientras que el exitoso primer campo de La Reserva ya ve muy adelantados los trabajos de un segundo campo, diseñado por José María Olazábal, para dar cabida tanto a la demanda deportiva como a la construcción en su entorno de lujosas villas.

El incremento de la población de Sotogrande, tanto flotante o turística como residente, es el argumento de fondo de estos desarrollos, apoyados por una serie de infraestructuras de servicios que confirman la solidez de su futuro inmediato. Dos nuevos colegios privados, uno en Alcaidesa y otro en San Roque, han comenzado ya su construcción, mientras la implantación de la mayoría de las marcas de grandes superficies prosigue de manera imparable en la zona. The resort of Sotogrande is the

driving force behind tourism in the far west of the Costa del Sol,

where the packed beaches of the province of Malaga give way, in the

Cadiz province, to the much less busy beaches of the Straits of Gibraltar area, which place an emphasis of respecting the landscape and on quality, both in terms of residential property and the sports developments relating to golf, polo and sailing.

In 2008 some important initiatives prepared over recent years came together and are destined to shape Sotogrande definitively. In this regard, the building work at Ribera

del Marlin is reaching completion (plus the increase in the number of berths available at the Marina to around 1,400); Santa María has been refurbished to make it one of the most important polo clubs in Europe; Ayala Polo Club has progressively grown, and now has three magnificent fields and the largest number of stalls in the area (260 permanent stalls which can be increased to 300 with mobile stalls in the high season); and two new golf courses are under construction, at both Valderrama and La Reserva.

On top of these great initiatives, the construction of new and spectacular private homes continues in the 2,000-hectare area covered by Sotogrande. The figures toyed

with by NH Hoteles, the current owner of Sotogrande S.A, indicate that the resort now has around 5,000 homes to which a further 2,500 will be added over the next 10 to 15 years, before the planning capacity is reached. Many of them are or will soon be large villas in keeping with the luxurious landscape already offered by the resort.

Always meeting the highest standards in terms of its low environmental and scenic impact, as well as the highest quality in construction, Sotogrande has never ceased to develop as far as its large villas are concerned, as the resort offers one of the best locations in Europe for the fortunate few who can gain access to its multi-million-euro homes.

The high standing of Sotogrande’s residents and holidaymakers is what has allowed it to conceive ambitious projects such as the forthcoming Blue Sotogrande Marina, which will be the cutting-edge shopping area that the resort has always lacked. Occupying the ground floor of the Ribera del Marlin project, Blue Sotogrande consists of over 500 metres of shopping promenade on the harbour-front, to incorporate 41 business premises capable of housing the best shops and select

that will later be home to a new hotel establishment, while the successful first course at La Reserva will soon be joined by a second course, designed by José María Olazábal, to meet the demand for golfing facilities and lead to the construction of luxurious villas in the vicinity.

In parallel with these initiatives, other resorts in the vicinity, such as Alcaidesa, have also made progress, having recently laid the first stone for the expansion of its La Línea marina, which will complement the offering of berths at Sotogrande in this area of the Mediterranean that traditionally has a shortage of moorings, with domestic demand coming on top of Gibraltarian demand. The increase in Sotogrande’s population, both in terms of tourists and residents, is the basis for these developments, supported by service infrastructures that confirm the solidity of the resort’s immediate future. Two new private schools, one in Alcaidesa and another in San Roque, are currently under construction, and all of the major retail outlets continue to establish themselves in the area at an astonishing rate.

A lo largo de 2008, Almenara ha emprendido una política de mejoras en todos los ámbitos que su director, Ángel Durán, comenta con orgullo, empezando por el programa de abonos, que ha tenido una excelente aceptación. “Ya se han vendido el 40 por ciento de los 100 abonos puestos a la venta y a lo largo del próximo años esperamos muchas nuevas incorporaciones por parte de aficionados que todavía están abonados a otros campos”.

Almenara se está volcando con sus nuevos clientes, para los que ha organizado ya tres torneos y para los que ha diseñado “un ranking anual a través del cual”, explica Durán, “poder formar un equipo representativo del club para

acudir a torneos en otros campos”. El programa de abonos anual se ha completado con unos exclusivos abonos corporativos dirigidos a empresas, que deben alcanzar su máximo rendimiento a lo largo de 2009.

Almenara ha vivido un intenso verano 2008, a lo largo del cual, además del Torneo del X Aniversario, se ha puesto en marcha una política de dar vida al club con la organización de, al menos, un torneo por mes, con la idea de dar “oportunidades a los abonados y crear más actividad social2, apunta Ángel Durán.

Desde el punto de vista deportivo, Almenara quiere ser “un referente para acoger las finales los circuitos españoles

y europeos, así como ser sede de un torneo de la escuela de clasificación del Tour Europeo. Además”, explica Durán, “Almenara quiere acoger una prueba del Proam Andaluz y conseguir un Campeonato de Andalucía de Profesionales en cualquiera de sus modalidades”.

Para lograr estas aspiraciones, se ha trabajado mucho en el mantenimiento y mejora del campo y de su hierba. ”Hemos cambiado la arena de todos los bunkers y hemos reforzado los rough en bermuda, al tiempo que continuamos mejorando el subsuelo arcilloso mediante recebos y drenajes”, dice Durán. En paralelo al desarrollo del campo ha corrido la evolución, desde su apertura en 1998, de la Academia de golf de Almenara, que cuenta con unas excelentes instalaciones cada vez más visitadas por un gran número de jugadores extranjeros que aprovechan el

buen clima de Sotogrande para mejorar su juego durante los meses de invierno.

“Durante este verano hemos tenido una media de 200 jugadores al día, que en invierno se reduce lógicamente a unos 50”, cuenta Irene Lara, directora de las instalaciones, que se siente orgullosa al repetir el juicio de sus clientes. “Todos coinciden en decir que la Academia está en su mejor momento, con una plantilla consolidada y experta y unas infraestructuras que hemos completado con la apertura de la tienda Srixon,

que ha tenido mucho éxito entre nuestros clientes”. La Academia cada vez despierta más interés entre los aficionados extranjeros, que a partir de noviembre y hasta abril acuden en grupos con sus propios profesores para pasar unos días en Almenara, mejorando su juego en la Academia y poniendo en práctica esas lecciones en los distintos campos de Sotogrande. “Durante este periodo tenemos una media de unas 140 personas diarias”, afirma Irene Lara, “que aprovechan todas las facilidades del resort de Sotogrande”.●

Over 2008, Almenara has implemented improvements in every area, which its manager, Ángel Durán, describes with pride, starting with the very well-received season ticket scheme. “40 percent of the 100 season tickets put on sale have already been sold and over forthcoming years we expect many new arrivals of enthusiasts who are still season-ticket holders at other courses”.

Almenara is pulling out all the stops for its customers, for whom it has already organised three tournaments and designed an “annual ranking through which”, Durán explains, “a team to represent the club in tournaments at other courses will be formed”. The annual season-ticket scheme includes some exclusive corporate season tickets aimed at companies, which should reach their maximum uptake over the course of 2009.

Almenara experienced an intense summer in 2008 when, in addition to its 10th Anniversary Tournament, a policy was put in place to bring life to the club with the organisation of at least one tournament per month, with the aim of giving “opportunities to season-ticket holders and creating more social activity”, said Ángel Durán.

From a sporting point of view, Almenara wants to be a “leading course for Spanish and European circuit finals, as well as the venue for a tournament in the European Tour qualifying school. In addition”, Durán explains, “Almenara wants to host an Andalusian Pro-Am competition and secure the Andalusian Professional Championship in any of its formats”.

To achieve these goals, a lot of work has been done on maintaining and improving the course and its grass. “We have changed the sand in all of the bunkers and strengthened the Bermuda rough. We have also continued to improve the clayey subsoil with gravel and drainage”, says Durán. Thanks to all this work, the course has been consolidated as one of the best in Sotogrande and Andalusia, with a very high standard of quality and where overcrowding has always been avoided.

In parallel with the development of the course, since its opening in 1998, the Almenara Golf Academy has evolved. It’s excellent facilities are visited by a growing number foreign players taking advantage of Sotogrande’s good climate to improve their game over the winter.

A los actuales nueve campos del entorno de Sotogrande se sumarán otros dos en

los próximos años, ya que tanto la Reserva como Valderrama están inmersos en sus

proyectos de segundos recorridos.

Los habituales de La Reserva habrán podido comprobar durante estos últimos meses lo avanzado de los trabajos, aunque todavía es prematuro hablar de fechas de terminación de un proyecto que acabará de convertir el complejo de Sotogrande S.A., donde también se incluyen los tres recorridos de nueve hoyos cada uno de Almenara y su Academia, en uno de los más importantes de la costa andaluza.

El segundo campo de Valderrama, por el contrario, todavía está en una fase previa a los trabajos sobre el terreno, aunque en este último mes ha dado un paso fundamental, con la presentación a la Comisión Provincial de Urbanismo del Plan Especial para las fincas La Cierva y la Guillena, ubicadas en el término municipal de Castellar.

Jaime Ortiz Patiño y su hijo Felipe, consejero delegado de Valderrama Estates, han visto así culminados diez años de meticuloso trabajo, que ha necesitado de la aprobación de muy diversos organismos para dar luz verde a un proyecto realmente espectacular.

Los 18 hoyos del nuevo campo, cuyo proyecto de construcción se prevé que se presente durante el próximo invierno, se extenderá sobre una superficie de 216 hectáreas, al tiempo que dispondrá de un desarrollo urbanístico que contempla la construcción de una Casa Club y un aparthotel de 200 unidades.l

f the two, La Reserva has made the most progress with

its project: over the course of this year, earthmoving

operations have been carried out uninterruptedly for the

construction of a course designed by Olazábal.

La Reserva regulars will have witnessed the good progress of the work over recent months, although it is still too early to talk about completion dates for the project. With this course, the Sotogrande S.A. complex, which also includes the three nine-hole courses of Almenara and its academy, will become one of the most important of the Andalusian coast.

The second Valderrama course, however, is still in a stage preceding the groundwork, although in the last

month an important step has been taken, with the presentation to the Provincial Town Planning Committee of the Special Plan for the La Cierva and la Guillena estates, located in the Castellar municipal area.

For Jaime Ortiz Patiño and his son Felipe, chief executive of Valderrama Estates, this represents the culmination of ten years of painstaking work, which has required the approval of a wide variety of organisations before this truly spectacular project can get the green light.

The new 18-hole course, the plans for which will presented in the winter, will cover a surface area of 216 hectares and include a property development involving the construction of a clubhouse and a 200-unit aparthotel. l

La historia de Sotogrande ha estado ligada al golf desde

sus inicios y, muy especialmente, con el primer campo

que existió en la zona, el Real Club de Golf, cuyas obras

coincidieron con la puesta en marcha de la urbanización y

marcó, además, un estilo que con el paso del tiempo ha ido

cobrando más y más importancia.

Desde los años 60 hasta ahora, Doro Plana ha ido fotografiando

Sotogrande para recopilar, tras 50 años de historia y de trabajo

incansable, un patrimonio gráfico de un valor incalculable. En

este año de despedida del Volvo Masters, Grupo HCP quiere

ofrecer su particular homenaje al golf de Sotogrande con esta

galería de imágenes pertenecientes a su Archivo Histórico, que

testimonian la evolución de un proyecto que fue visionario en

sus orígenes y que ahora se ha convertido en uno de los resorts

de lujo más importantes de Europa.

Desde las obras iniciales del Real Club de Golf y algunos de los

personajes que en los primeros años jugaron sus hoyos, pasando

por el viejo campo de las Aves, precursor de Valderrama, y

algunas de sus primeras imágenes, aquí hemos reunido algunas

magníficas instantáneas para la memoria y la nostalgia, según los

casos, que por sí mismas constituyen un testimonio, periodístico y

artístico, de los inicios del golf en Andalucía y España.

The history of Sotogrande has been linked to golf since the beginning. This is specially so with the first course in the area – the Real Club de Golf – where work coincided with the creation of the estate and, in addition, set a style which, over time, became more and more important.

Doro Plana has been photographing Sotogrande from the 60s until today, compiling, after 50 years of history and tireless work, incalculably valuable visual heritage. This year says farewell to the Volvo Masters and Grupo HCP would like to offer its particular homage to Sotogrande golf with this gallery of images

from the Historical Archive. The images bear witness to the evolution of a visionary project from the start and which has now become one of the most important luxury resorts in Europe.

There are some marvellous recollection and nostalgia snapshots here, from initial work at the Real Club de Golf and some of the characters who in the early years played the holes, to the old Aves course – Valderrama’s precursor – and some of the first images taken there. All this makes for a journalistic and artistic testimony of golf’s beginnings in Andalusia and Spain.

Valderrama es uno de los mejores campos del mundo, de hecho sólo necesitó diez años para forjar su leyenda. El recorrido fue ideado por uno de los mejores diseñadores del mundo, el ya fallecido Robert Trent Jones senior. Aunque a primera vista pueda parecer un campo agradable y fácil de jugar, tiene muchas

dificultades y obstáculos que ponen a prueba los nervios del jugador más tranquilo. Está considerado el mejor campo de la Europa continental, algo que le ha hecho merecedor de acoger el Volvo Masters y en 1997 ser la sede de la Ryder Cup.

Valderrama is one of the best courses in the world; in fact it only took ten years to forge its legend. The layout was conceived by one of the best designers in the world, the late Robert Trent Jones senior. Although at first sight it can appear to be a pleasant and easy course, it has many

complications and obstacles that put the most relaxed players’ nerves to the test. It is considered to be the best course in continental Europe, which has made it the deserving home of the Volvo Masters and the venue for the Ryder Cup in 1997.

Inaugurado en 2003, este campo se localiza en un bello paraje de la zona alta de Sotogrande, caracterizado por una vegetación autóctona de pinos mediterráneos, acebuches y alcornoques. El diseño de Cabell B. Robinson, discípulo del prestigioso Robert Trent Jones, enclava a La Reserva entre dos valles. El recorrido de 18

hoyos cuenta con cuatro lagos y sus greens se caracterizan por su generosa extensión y por su variedad de formas, al igual que ocurre con los bunkers. El campo ocupa una superficie de 72 hectáreas y su longitud es de 6.700 metros, pero al disponer de cinco tees de salida en cada hoyo puede ser disfrutado por todo tipo de jugadores.

Opened in 2003, this course is located in the beautiful setting of the high area of Sotogrande, characterised by indigenous Mediterranean vegetation, including pines, wild olives and cork oak. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, a disciple of Robert Trent Jones for 20 years, La Reserva sits between

two valleys. The greens, built following USGA regulations, are characterised by their generous size and variety of shapes, as are the bunkers. The course covers a total surface area of 72 hectares and its length is of 6,700 metres, but with five tees for each hole it can be enjoyed by any player.

Enclavado en la zona alta de Sotogrande, este campo de golf ofrece un ingenioso recorrido diseñado por el británico Dave Thomas. Está conformado por 27 hoyos rodeados por un bosque de pinos silvestres y alcornoques, embellecido por dos lagos, que ofrecen difíciles obstáculos de agua. El trazado presenta calles onduladas, bunkers profundos y

algunos de los más impresionantes tees de Europa. Con este recorrido, Almenara ofrece al golfista el perfecto equilibrio de juego, que se complementa con unas espléndidas vistas. El campo se encuentra en la ladera de la Sierra Almenara, por lo que el recorrido se adapta a ésta.

Nestling on the high area of Sotogrande, this golf course offers an ingenious layout designed by Dave Thomas from Britain. It is made up of 27 holes surrounded by a wild pine and cork oak forest, beautified by two lakes providing difficult water hazards. The course has undulating fairways, deep bunkers and some of the

most impressive tees in Europe. With this layout, Almenara offers golfers the perfect balance of play, which is complemented by magnificent views. The course is positioned on the slopes of the Sierra Almenara and the layout has been adapted to the hillside.

El Real Club de Golf Sotogrande fue uno de los primeros campos de golf construidos en Europa y, además de esta distinción, tiene el título de Real desde 1995. La cara más cono-cida del RCGS está encuadrada en el ámbi-to deportivo, con dos campos diseñados por

Robert Trent Jones: uno corto de 9 hoyos y otro de 18, en el que se celebran grandes competiciones, pero además destaca en él su club social, un lugar de encuentro para los más de 2.000 socios y familiares que disfru-tan de unas instalaciones de lujo.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande was one of the first golf courses built in Europe and, in addition to this distinction, it has held the title Real (Royal) since 1995. The most well-known side of RCGS is its quality as a sporting venue, with two cour-

ses designed by Robert Trent Jones, a short 9-hole course and another 18-hole course, where big com-petitions are held. But it is also a social club, a meeting place for the 2,000 or more members and their families who enjoy its luxury facilities.

The exit for the course is at kilometre 124.6 of the road between Sotogrande and La Línea. Having left the road, Alcaidesa is at around 2.5 kilometres.

Siguiendo por la A-7 tomar la salida 124 y seguir las indicacionesa La Alcaidesa.

Es el único campo de golf tipo links del sur de España. Diseñado por Peter Allis y Clive Clark e inaugurado en 1992, ofrece unas condiciones naturales que lo han convertido en un lugar de moda en los últimos años. Sus espectaculares vistas al mar Mediterráneo, a Gibraltar y a la cordillera norte de Marruecos

lo convierten en un lugar ideal para practicar el golf. Respecto al trazado del campo, tiene obstáculos de agua, especialmente significativos en el hoyo 2. El viento también suele entrar en juego, poniendo a veces grandes dificultades para que la bola no se salga de la calle.

Alcaidesa is the only links type golf course in the south of Spain. It was designed by Peter Allis and Clive Clark in 1992 and offers natural conditions which have made it a fashionable venue in recent years. Its spectacular views over the Mediterranean, to Gibraltar and the

northern mountain range of Morocco, make it an ideal place for playing golf.The layout of the course includes water hazards, playing a particularly significant role on the second. The wind is also tends to come into play, making it very hard at times to keep the ball on the fairway.

Desde el pasado mes de octubre Alcaidesa cuenta con un segundo campo, convirtiéndose en el más reciente de la zona. Sus 18 hoyos repartidos en más de 6.000 metros cuentan con el sello único de Dave Thomas, destacando su mayor dificultad con respecto al primero gracias a sus bunkers y zonas de lagos. Los greens

de ambos campos también son radicalmente distintos, mientras que en el Links son abruptos y pequeños, los del nuevo campo sorprenden por su llanura y amplitud. Pero no todo son diferencias, viejo y nuevo campo tienen par 72 y la exposición al aire en ambos es un handicap que los jugadores deben superar.

From October of this year Alcaidesa has boasted a second course, the most recent in the area. Its 18 holes stretching over 6,000 metres have the unique seal of Dave Thomas and the course is more difficult than the old one due to its bunkers and lake areas. The greens on the two courses are

Casares Costa Golf está rodeado de arboleda y vegetación típicamente mediterránea, destacando gran cantidad de árboles frutales, entre otros nísperos y aguacates. Se encuentra en el futuro valle del golf de Casares, se caracteriza por tener un recorrido muy agradable, sin

pendientes y en un entorno que hace las delicias de cualquier jugador. Mención especial al hoyo 7, sin duda alguna el par 5 más difícil de la Costa del Sol. Su estrecha calle y su lago de más de 150 metros protegiendo el gren hacen de este hoyo un reto para todo gran jugador.

Casares Costa Golf is surrounded by typical Mediterranean groves and vegetation, with many fruit trees including loquats and avocados. It is located in the future Casares golf valley and is characterised by its pleasant layout, without slopes and in a setting that will

delight any player. The 7th is without doubt the most difficult par-5 on the Costa del Sol.

The narrow fairway and 150-metre lake protecting the green make this hole a challenge for any great player.

El guadiareño Álvaro Quirós logró su clasificación para el Volvo Masters al conseguir una magnífica victoria en el Open de Portugal, lo que le catapultó del puesto 105 hasta el 24 de la Orden del Mérito.

Quirós se convirtió así en el séptimo español clasificado para la que será la última edición del Volvo Masters de Valderrama. “Jugar el Volvo Masters era lo que más ilusión me hacia, era mi objetivo al principio del año, pero parecía que no iba a llegar, aunque al final todo se ha arreglado, me ha cambiado la vida”, confesó el jugador que tendrá a toda la afición local apoyándole para conseguir su sueño. El Open de Portugal es el segundo triunfo del año de Álvaro Quirós, tras el logrado en el Alfred Dunhill Championship de Sudáfrica.

Guadiaro golfer Álvaro Quirós has qualified for the Volvo Masters after achieving a magnificent victory in the Portuguese Open, catapulting him from 105th to 24th in the Order of Merit.

Quirós thereby became the seventh Spaniard to qualify for what will be the last Volvo Masters at Valderrama. “Playing in the Volvo Masters was my biggest dream; it was my objective at the beginning of the year, but it looked like I wasn’t going to make it. But in the end everything has worked out; it has changed my life”, admitted the player, who will have all of the local supporters behind him. The Portuguese Open is Álvaro Quirós’s second victory of the year, following his win in the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.
