First Week of Lent Primera Semana de Cuaresma

HOPE for FAMILY LIFE

Social forces and isolation through technology make

modern family life challenging, but there is hope -

found in Jesus' own life and teachings.

Jesus lived with and knew the reality of family

life - its love, joys, anxieties, and tensions. In the

Holy Family we have examples of how to keep

family relationships thriving:

Mary - an example of mothers as witnesses to

tenderness, and of facing the family's challenges

with courage and serenity;

Joseph - an example of how being a father is to

be always present, to be self-giving through love;

Jesus - a living reminder that children are unique

and unrepeatable, with their own personal gifts

and vocations.

'The Prodigal Son' provides lessons on responding

with forgiveness when a child abandons his family

to seek adventure, or a brother commits a perceived

wrong, and the courage to admit your mistake when

you have taken your family for granted.

Throughout the Gospels when we hear of Jesus'

reactions to hear a widow wailing over her son's

death, the plea of a father to cure his epileptic son,

or sisters to their brothers devastating death, we

recognize that God is with the family through both

its trials and joys.

When we treat our family relationships as precious

gifts from God and use love as the basis for our

interactions with them, we not only provide hope

for the immediate family, but can begin to address

the needs of our world family.

con valentía y serenidad;

Joseph: un ejemplo de cómo ser padre es estar

siempre presente, darse a sí mismo a través del amor;

Our Liturgical Season / Nuestro Tiempos Litúrgicos

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE The Catholic Church requires its members to observe

certain dietary rules—fasting and abstinence—to recognize and mark the importance of

particular days during its liturgical year, as well as to express penance for personal sin.

The regulations apply as follows:

Generally, the laws of fasting require that on the designated days the person eat just one full meal

and two smaller meals, and avoid eating between meals. Abstinence laws require that the person

avoid meat altogether.

The regulations governing abstinence from meat apply to all Catholics age fourteen and older. Adults who have

completed their eighteenth year until the beginning of their sixtieth year are bound by the regulations that govern

fasting. Pregnant women and sick people are excused from the regulations.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fasting and abstinence; all other Fridays of Lent are days of

abstinence only.

In addition, the Church encourages its adult members to observe some form of penance, perhaps including some

kind of fast and abstinence, on all Fridays throughout the year.

Special for Lent:

FINDING HOPE when LIFE HURTS

by Renée Lagorio-French

St. Francis of Assisi Liturgical Committee

Recap of Feb 14 to 17: It is not the words, but the hugs and other acts of caring I received that I remember most when dealing with the loss of my son. It was the act of someone reaching out to me, instead of avoiding me...of acknowledging my pain without suggesting that I just needed to get over it or that things would get better. Help me to do the same for others and bring them joy. Let me bring love and hope to my immediate and community family.

February 18 to 24: The First Week of Lent Fortified boundaries - I think I have my boundaries pretty well defined...I need to focus on NOT being pushy, rude or impatient. Lord, help me affirm others so they can fortify their own boundaries.

Seeking the wounded - A hug goes a long way...sometimes saying less is saying more...help me to recognize the wounded and let them know I am there with them and sharing their pain; NOT offering platitudes or trying to 'fix' things for them.

Forgiving the debt - Remind me when I forget that it is not about 'winning' but about 'loving' ...everyone, every time. Remind me that I am called to 'forgive those who trespass against me.' Anger, bitterness, and revenge kill you from the inside...

In the blink of an eye - 'Life is about cherishing and celebrating people now.' Help me to always live in the moment and to always be present with those I love. NO REGRETS! As I look back on what I could have done better with my son, while he was alive...thankfully, it is not much, although I could have been nicer, I could have been present in the moment more often, I could have let him know I loved him more often, I could have shown more of an interest in his life. Now, instead of thinking about it, I try to do it, with those who are in my life now.

One wounded soul at a time - Do I / can I represent the Church to others? Do I / can I love those hurting into the Kingdom of God? What does that look like for me? Lord, give me the strength to recognize and ACT on those ways I can offer companionship to someone who is hurting.

No Vacancy - I do allow 'scenarios to camp out in my head' at times. Help me to understand that those people and

scenarios are just not worth the wasted energy I allow them. Focus my energy instead on how I can help them get

past their own hurt...to be a haven of love and peace while they deal with the hurts that allow them to lash out at

others. Let me NOT be one who causes others to rent space in me...that is not affirming.

“Full of Grace” is a film that depicts our Blessed Mother in her last earthly days as she helps the

fractious early church regain their original encounter with our Lord. We will show this incredible

moving story next Tuesday morning, February 20th, at 9:30 am. While the film is not part of “Into

the Heart of Mary” which continues on February 27th, it will serve as a nice preamble for those who

continue the series as well as those who just wish to view the film. All are welcome!

“Into the Heart of Mary” Imagine what Mary must have felt watching her son journey towards

Jerusalem. What was Mary’s experience of her son, the Risen Jesus? How did

Mary embrace her new life in the young Christian community? We will explore

scripture and use contemplative prayer to journey with Mary through Jesus’

passion, death and resurrection.

We will begin the second half of our journey with Mary starting on Tuesday,

February 27th, from 9:30-11 am. This bible study ser ies will be presented

for four weeks, and is open to all who wish to participate, even if you did not

attend the first session. Please join us for our Lenten Faith Sharing as we

continue our journey “Into the Heart of Mary.”

“Finding Hope through Song and Silence”

A Taize-Style Prayer Service

Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 6 pm

Please join our St. Francis of Assisi Music Ministry Disciples for a spiritual and reflective Lenten prayer service created in the style of Taizé. The Taizé service is a meditative experience of prayer that includes silence, prayer, scripture, and repeated “chants,” one of the trademarks of Taizé music. It is not considered to be “centering prayer” as the service itself is directed and focused, but the repetition of the simple musical chants by ALL is designed to help meditation and prayer. This service will be held in the church, will last approximately 45 minutes, and is free of charge. No RSVP is required. All are welcome, but we do ask that participants enter the church quietly in order to maintain the reflective nature of our prayer service. Thank you.

MILITARY PRAYER LIST: If you would like to add a family member or friend to our

prayer list, please send to [email protected], call (775) 831-0490, or drop off a note in our

parish office. Due to current armed forces recommendations, we will no longer include the

location of our military men and women, but will simply list name, rank and branch of service.

Issues of Peace and Justice: Our short gospel reading today packs power! “This is the time of

fulfillment!” What are we waiting for? Jesus is the One who fills the messianic promise. Jesus brings the

Kingdom of God to us. We are told simply to “repent and believe” this good news! As we progress through

Lent, is this not more than enough to contemplate this, that is, what it means to each of us “to repent and to

believe?”

“The essential characteristic of the lay faithful who work in the Lord's vineyard is the secular nature of their

Christian discipleship, which is carried out precisely in the world. ‘It belongs to the laity to seek the kingdom of

God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God's will.’ By Baptism, the laity are

incorporated into Christ and are made participants in his life and mission according to their specific identity...

The faithful who, by Baptism are incorporated into Christ, are placed in the People of God and in their own

way share the priestly, prophetic and kingly office of Christ, and to the best of their ability carry on the

mission of the whole Christian people in the Church and in the world.’”

“The lay faithful are called to cultivate an authentic lay spirituality by which they are reborn as new men and

women, both sanctified and sanctifiers, immersed in the mystery of God and inserted in society. Such a

spirituality will build up the world according to Jesus' Spirit. It will make people capable of looking beyond

history, without separating themselves from it, of cultivating a passionate love for God without looking away

from their bothers and sisters, whom they are able to see as the Lord sees them and love as the Lord loves

them“ (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, #541 & #545).
