Thirtieth  Sunday in Ordinary Time         October 24, 2021

FEAST OF ST. JUDE Thursday, October 28

Saint Jude Thaddeus was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus. He was a brother of

St. James the Less, and a relative of Our Savior. Saint Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the Last Supper why He would

not manifest Himself to the whole world. He is invoked in desperate situations

because St. Jude in his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult

circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them. The devotion to the saints brings us

closer to Jesus. We must avoid superstitions like chain letters which obtain the opposite effect. On October 28, we celebrate the feast of

St. Jude at 6:00pm. (Spanish Mass)

RECOGNIZING JESUS The star of today’s Gospel is a panhandler. Bartimaeus is blind, yes, but he is probably also homeless and filthy, a real nuisance to respectable citizens. Even so, it is Bartimaeus who recognizes Jesus as the Messiah, places all his faith in him, throws aside everything he has (his cloak), begs him for mercy, receives new vision, and follows Jesus on the way to suffering and death in Jerusalem. How desperate will we have to get before we can do the same?

a Jesús. Tenemos que evitar supersticiones como las cadenas

de cartas que tienen el efecto contrario. El 28 de octubre, celebraremos la fiesta de

San Judas con la Misa a las 6:00pm.

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN Tips For a Happy & Safe Halloween – I

To help ensure that Halloween is a fun and exciting time for children, it is good to review a few common sense safety tips: 1. Parents shouldn’t allow their children to eat or sample any candy before it’s checked. Throw away all unwrapped candy, popcorn and caramel apples unless they come from a trusted source. 2. Parents should accompany young children or groups of children when trick-or-treating. 3. Walk with friends and stay together. Stay within your own neighborhood or areas with which you are familiar and only visit homes with lit porch lights. Archdiocese of Los Angeles -Safeguard the Children.

PROTECCION A LOS NIÑOS Consejos Para Un Feliz & Salvo Día de Halloween – I

CAN CATHOLICS CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN? The word Halloween is actually a contraction for All Hallows Eve, which, before the reform of the liturgical calendar, was the vigil of All Saints and All Souls Days. As such, Halloween can be considered a Christian holiday. Like many Christian holidays, the secular world has attached its own traditions to the day (e.g., costumes, trick-or-treating, parties) that are not inherently bad in and of themselves but can be problematic when the religious meaning of the holiday is set aside, forgotten, or ignored. At its best, Halloween is a reminder of our own mortality and our own need to prepare ourselves to one day face God. The festivities attached to the holiday can, like Mardi Gras for Lent, prepare us for All Saints and All Souls Days, and for the month of November, which the Church has traditionally set aside for remembrance of the souls in purgatory. Christian parents have a variety of options for celebrating the holiday in a Christian spirit and should feel free to pick among those options what works best for helping their families learn the "reason for the season."
