Meanwhile, the International Menopause Society (IMS) has been engaged in a campaign to promote the use of HRT.
The society recently attracted international publicity for a review of the literature that arose from a meeting of specialists, a "global summit" on menopause.
The meeting was funded by Wyeth, Bayer Schering Pharma, and Novo Nordisk Femcare.
A statement from the society during the summit stressed the importance of correcting negative perceptions about HRT among the media, the public, and health professionals.
It said that each regional or national menopause society should deliver a simple and clear message
"stressing the benefits of HRT and relieving fears."
