„Wish‟ Vs „hope‟ for realistic vs hypothetical situations in the present

Language is a reflection of reality. Choosing between language items like „wish‟ or „hope‟ isa matter of things being true (real) or unreal (untrue). For example when we say somethinglike „the sky is blue‟ the language we use to express that idea responds to the fact thatwe‟re speaking about something that is real: the color of the sky is blue. The same happenswith our expectations, desires and wishes, sometimes they are true and sometimes theyare not. In this kind of situation, context (reality) determines the kind of language we willuse.

It is 01:00 p.m. You are at the airportwaiting for your sister‟s plane to land . Youneed to be back at the office at 02:00p.m. You think:

“I hope her p lane is on t ime ” means that the possibility of her plane being ontime is real .

But you could also think:

Page 3: Curso de Ingles-unidad 2

“I hope her plane is not late ”

“I ho pe her plane is no t late ” means that

the possibility of herplane NOT being late is real .

The situation above shows that there is a high degree of possibility thatsome events or situations be possible or real . For this kind of situationswe use the verb „hope‟.

Using „wish‟ for unrealistic desires: wishful thinking

Sometimes, however, you may want to speakabout things that are not real or possible ,even more, you may want to express how youwould like things to be, not how they are. Thisis called wishfu l th ink ing : when you talkabout the way you wish things to be, not theway they are. In wishful thinking you expressyour desire that events and situationsbe exactly the opposite of what they are.

Let‟s see an example of such a situation:

You are in the middle of a blizzard. You‟re sitting in front of your windowshivering with cold. This is what you think ...

“I wish I were in Florida ”

Wish and hope are both followed by complete sentences (S + Verb +Predicate). What matters in these sentences is the verb tense that you use
