    INTRODUCTION

    Akkad Civilization comes under Sumerian Civilization, 3300-

    1550 BC.

    The Akkadian Period, 2350-2150.

    Akkad was an ancient region of Mesopotamia, occupying the

    northern part of later Babylonia and southern part of Sumer.

    In both regions city states had begun to appear in

    the 4th millennium B.C.

    In Akkad a Semitic language, Akkadian was spoken.

    Sargon I was the king when the empire flourished.

    KING OF AKKAD EMPIRE

    A Semitic ruler known as Sargon the Great

    conquered the entire area.

    He became the ruler around 2334 B.C.

    Prior to Sargon the land between the rivers was

    controlled by Kings and royal families.

    Sargon was the first ruler to organize and unite the

    city-states of Sumer and Mesopotamia under theAkkadian Empire.

    The typical city divided space intoresidential, mixed use,commercial, and civic spaces. The

    residential areas were groupedby profession.

    At the core of the city was a hightemple .

    This high temple usuallypredated the founding of the cityand was the nucleus aroundwhich the urban form grew.

    The districts adjacent to gates

    had a special religious andeconomic function.

    The city always included a belt ofirrigated agricultural land

    including small hamlets.

    TRANSPORTATION The transportation network was organized in three tiers:

    Wide processional streets- They served as the northern

    entrance way into the city, and during the new Year Festival as

    a cultic route. Theywere approx. 10-14m wide and were madeof compacted mixture of stones and soil

    Public through streets- Used by the people of the city to travelin the city.They were approx. 5m wide and were made ofcompacted mixture of stones and soil.

    Private blind alleys- It was a passage that is closed at one end.

    The current estimate is 10% of the city area was streets and

    90% buildings.

    The canals; however, were more important than roads for

    transportation .

    WATER SUPPLY WATER WAS MAINLY OBTAINED

    THROUGH RIVER AS THESECIVILIZATION FLOURISHED BESIDERIVER.

    To supply water to the city they hadproper canal system.

    They have made a group of labor whowere given the responsibility ofcleanliness of canal.

    These canal were of (max) 16m width

    They also created dam with sluice gate torelease water from levees

    Levees helped them to tackle with theflood water which used to accumulatedin city areas near the river in winter andrainy season

    CANAL SYSTEM (with descriptive map) Cities were situated along the

    sides of canal. These canal weredirectly connected to the mainstream or main canal.

    Ditches were made toaccumulate water and reducethe flow and the travel time

    Palace was situated at the centerof the city and canal system soas to provide adequate amountof water to the king

    canals were also used fortransportation of logs peopleand goods to various parts ofcities.

    DRAINAGE They were pretty adept with drainage

    construction, accentuated by thesignificance that water played in theirpriestly rituals of purification and those

    affecting the burial of the kings. In excavation many bath room were

    found indicating the use of propersanitation system

    Due to very less evidences available witharcheologist . Its not possible tocomment on final disposal of sewage .

    IN total akkadian people were highlyconcerned about the health and properdisposal of waste. Which is indicated bythe various copper flush system found.
