PRESENTACIÓNLa excepcional coyuntura macroeconómica que hoy vive el Perú, constituye una granventana de oportunidades para el país y el mundo entero. Cuando el Gobierno asumió susfunciones el 28 de julio de 2006, estuvimos muy conscientes de lo que ello significaba yasumimos el compromiso de celebrar en Lima, en el 2008, dos Cumbres: La V Cumbrede Jefes de Estado de América Latina, El Caribe y la Unión Europea (ALC-UE) y la XVICumbre de Líderes del Foro de Cooperación Económica Asia - Pacífico (APEC 2008).
Estas Cumbres trascienden la frontera de lo económico y lo comercial, sus resultadosimpactarán en el desarrollo humano, tanto en lo social, económico y ambiental, así comoen la búsqueda de la igualdad, para erradicar la pobreza y terminar con la explotación y lamiseria.
Una de las mayores preocupaciones del Gobierno es la lucha contra la pobreza, para locual se ha propuesto, entre otras acciones, asegurar la eficacia y eficiencia de los programassociales de alivio a la pobreza y mejorar la calidad del gasto fiscal destinado a dichosprogramas. Para tal efecto, se han establecido las Bases para la Estrategia de Superaciónde la Pobreza y Oportunidades Económicas para los Pobres, que define una estrategiaque se sustenta en la generación de oportunidades económicas para las personas enestado de situación de pobreza, a partir de un crecimiento económico con una equitativadistribución de la riqueza, un proceso de descentralización, un manejo eficiente del gastosocial, así como la debida y oportuna atención de las demandas y necesidades de laspersonas de menores recursos.
En este contexto, con el propósito de contribuir a un mejor conocimiento de la realidad delPerú, se pone a disposición de los Jefes de Estado y de las delegaciones que participanen ambas Cumbres la publicación "Perú: Síntesis Estadística", que muestra informaciónsobre la evolución del Perú en el campo social y económico.

PRESENTATIONThe exceptional macroeconomic coyuncture that Peru lives today, constitutes a greatwindow of opportunities for the country and the entire world. When the Governmentassumed its functions on July 28th 2006, we were very conscious of what it signified andwe assumed the commitment to celebrate in Lima, in the year 2008, two Summits: The VSummit of Heads of State and Government of Latin America, the Caribbean and theEuropean Union (LAC-EU), and the XVI Summit of Leaders of the Asia Pacific EconomicCooperation forum (APEC 2008).
These Summits transcend the border of the economic and commercial matters, its resultswill impact in the human development, as in the social, economic and environmentalmatters, as well as in the search for equality, to eradicate the poverty and to finish with theexploitation and the misery.
One of the greater worries of the Government is the fight against poverty, for which it hasbeen proposed, among others actions, to assure the efficacy and efficiency of the socialprograms relieve the poverty and to improve the quality of the fiscal expense destined tothose programs. So to that effect, the Basis for the Strategy to Overcome Poverty and theEconomic Opportunities for the Poor People have been established. These opportunitiesdefine a strategy that is supported in the generation of economic opportunities for the peoplein poverty situation, from an economic growth with an equitable distribution of the wealth, aprocess of decentralization, an efficient management of the social expense, and theappropriate and opportune attention of the demands and needs of the people of low resources.
In this context, with the purpose of contributing to a better knowledge of the Peruvian reality,it put at the disposal of the Heads of state and of the delegations that participate in bothSummits the publication «Peru: Statistical Synthesis», that shows information on theevolution of Peru in the social and economic fields.

27 millones 595 mil habitantes, distribuidos en una extensión territorial de 1 millón 285 mil Km 2 . Los
departamentos más densamente poblados (Hab./
Km 2 ) son Lima (237), Lambayeque (80), La
Libertad (63), Piura (48), Tumbes (44) y Cajamarca (43) . En cambio, los que
tienen menos población por Km 2 son Madre de Dios (1),
Loreto (3), Ucayali (4), Amazonas, Moquegua y Pasco con 11 cada uno.

millions 595 thousand inhabitants, distributed in a

El Perú es un país de variados climas. Posee 28 de los 32 tipos de clima existentes en el mundo, debido a la Cordillera de los Andes que recorre el país longitudinalmente de sur a norte, y además por las corrientes marinas de Humboldt y El Niño.

Entre el período 1993 2007, la población aumentó a un promedio anual de 354 mil
habitantes. En el año 2007,
aproximadamente tres cuartas partes de la
población reside en el área urbana (74,6%)
y una cuarta parte en el área rural (25,4%).

En el año 2007, la distribución de la población por grandes grupos de edad,
muestra que el 30,6% es menor de 15 años, mientras que el 63,3% se encuentra en

de edad.

year 2007, approximately three quarters parts of the

En el año 2007, la estructura de la población peruana es relativamente joven. Los gráficos muestran cambios entre el censo 1993 y la proyección 2007: una disminución en la participación relativa tanto en varones como en mujeres, en los cuatro primeros grupos de edad (0 a 19 años), un similar peso relativo en el grupo de varones entre 20 y 24 años y una proporción mayor a partir de los 25 y más años de edad, tanto en hombres como en mujeres.

In the year 2007, the structure of the Peruvian population is relatively young. The graphics show changes between the census 1993 and the projection 2007: a decrease in the relative participation as in men as in women, in the four first groups of age (0 to 19 years), a similar relative participation in the group of men between 20 and 24 years and a major proportion from 25 and more years of age, as in men as in women.

El Departamento de Lima, sede de la capital de la
República, presenta la mayor concentración de población,
con 8 millones 235 mil habitantes, que representan el 29,8% de la población total del País. Por región
natural, la población peruana se asienta
fundamentalmente en la Costa, en la cual reside el 54,1%. En la Sierra está el
36,4% y en la Selva la región de mayor extensión territorial del país, solo reside el 9,5%
de la población total.

The department of Lima, headquarters of the capital of
the Republic, presents the major concentration of
population, with 8 millions 235 thousand inhabitants, that
represent the 29.8% of the total population of the Country. By natural region, the Peruvian population, fundamentally, settle in the Coast, in which
lives the 54.1%. In the Highlands is the 36.4% and in the Forest the region of major
territorial extension of the country, only lives the 9.5% of
the total population.

La pobreza en el Perú disminuye de manera sostenida. En el año 2007, la pobreza afectó al 42% de la población del país. Comparado con la Tasa de Pobreza del año 2004 ha disminuido en 6,6 puntos porcentuales y respecto al año 2006, la disminución representa 2,5 puntos porcentuales.

The poverty in Peru diminishes in a sostained way. In the year 2007, the poverty affected to the 42% of the country population . It compared with the Rate of poverty of the year 2004 has diminished in 6.6 percentage points and with respect to the year 2006, the decrease represents 2.5 percentage points.

Los programas alimentarios benefician en mayor medida a los hogares del área rural del país. Así, alrededor del
60 por ciento de los hogares tienen al menos a uno de sus miembros que ha recibido
algún programa alimentario, sea programa de Vaso de Leche, Comedor Popular,
Club de Madres, Desayuno Escolar, Canasta
Alimentaria, entre otros programas alimentarios.

En el período 19812007 se observa que el nivel educativo de la población peruana de 15 años y más de edad ha mejorado significativamente. En el año 2007, cerca de la cuarta parte de la población del país (24,1%) había logrado estudiar educación superior (incluye universitaria y no universitaria), el 41,4% algún año de educación secundaria y el 27,5% tenía a lo más algún año de educación primaria. La población con nivel Inicial o no tenía nivel alguno de educación representó el 7,0%.

In the period 19812007, it is observed that the educational level of the Peruvian population of 15 years and more of age has improved significantly. In the year 2007, near of one fourth of the country population (24.1%) had managed to study higher education (it includes university and non university level), the 41.4% some years of secondary education and the 27.5% had at most some years of primary education. The population with preschool or that did not have any level of education represented the 7.0%.

El número de establecimientos de salud en el país se ha incrementado en 240 en el periodo 2005 2007. En el año 2007 existen 470 hospitales, es decir, 4% más de lo observado en el año 2005. El aumento en centros de salud y puestos de salud fue del orden del 3%, respectivamente.

La población que accede a algún tipo de seguro de salud viene incrementándose. En el
año 2004 representó el 36,9% y en el año 2007 el 41,8%, es decir, aumentó 5
puntos porcentuales y entre el año 2006 y 2007, el
incremento fue de cerca de 4 puntos. El tipo de seguro que
más aumentó es el Seguro Integral de Salud (SIS), al
pasar de 15,6% en el 2004 a 18,3% en el 2007.

Desde enerofebreromarzo del 2005 se observa una
tendencia al incremento de manera sostenida de la
población que accede a algún seguro de salud (público o
privado), siendo más significativo en el trimestre
octubrenoviembrediciembre del 2007 comparado con su
similar trimestre del año 2006, que fue de 5,5 puntos
porcentuales.

From JanuaryFebruary March of the 2005 is observed a tendency to the increment in a
sustainable manner in the population that have an access
to some health insurance (public or private), it was more
significant in the trimester OctoberNovemberDecember of the 2007 compared with its similar trimester of the year
2006, that it was of 5.5 percentage points.
The population that have an access to some type of health insurance is being increased. In the year 2004 represented
the 36.9% and in the year 2007 the 41,8%, that means, it
increased 5 percentage points and between the year 2006 and
2007, the increment was of around 4 points. The type of
insurance that had major increased is the Integral
Insurance of Health (SIS), upon passing from 15.6% in
the 2004 to 18.3% in the 2007.

La desnutrición crónica en el país ha permanecido casi constante en el período 1996 2000. A partir de esa fecha se observan disminuciones, en el año 2005, el 24,1% de los niños menores de 5 años adolecen de desnutrición crónica, es decir, tienen un retardo en el crecimiento de talla para la edad, nivel que disminuyó en 1,2 puntos porcentuales al compararlo con el nivel observado en el 2007, que fue de 22,9%.

En el período 20002007 se observa un incremento importante en el control prenatal de las mujeres por profesional de salud. En el año 2000 representó el 84% y en el 2005 el 89%, es decir, en 5 años aumentó 5 puntos porcentuales. Similar incremento se observa en sólo 2 años entre el 2005 y el 2007, al pasar de 89% a 94%, respectivamente.
The chronic malnutrition in the country has remained almost constant in the period 19962000. From that date decreases are observed, in the year 2005, the 24,1% of the children less than 5 years suffers from chronic malnutrition, that means, they have a delay in the growth of size for the age, level that diminished in 1,2 percentage points upon comparing it with the level observed in the 2007, that was of 22,9%.
In the period 20002007 an important increment in the pre birth control of the women is observed by professional of health. In the year 2000 represented the 84% and in the 2005 the 89%, that means, in 5 years increased 5 percentage points. A similar increment is observed in only 2 years between the 2005 and the 2007, upon passing from 89% to 94%, respectively.

Se observa una disminución significativa en la tasa de mortalidad infantil, debido principalmente al aumento
del acceso de la población a los servicios de salud. Se
estima que en el año 2007, de cada 1000 niños que nacen en Perú, 18 mueren durante
el primer año de vida notándose una reducción de
casi la mitad, en comparación con la tasa de
33 observado en el año 2000.

La atención del parto por un profesional de la
Salud, viene incrementándose significativamente. En el año
2007, representó el 75%, aumentando en 17 puntos
porcentuales con relación al año 2000 que significó el 58%, y en 6 puntos si se compara con el año 2005
(69%).

En el país, los niveles de procreación vienen disminuyendo, la tasa global de fecundidad en el 2007 fue de 2.5 hijos por mujer en edad fértil. En el año 2000 este indicador representó cerca de 3 hijos por mujer, lo que evidencia una reducción del 14% en el período 2000 2007.

En el período de análisis 19972007 se
observa un incremento significativo de los hogares
que tienen al menos un miembro que tiene telefonía
móvil. La tenencia de un celular abarca todos los
estratos socioeconómicos.
En los hogares urbanos del país, el acceso a los
servicios que proveen las tecnologías de información y
comunicación se ha incrementado
significativamente en los últimos años. La proporción de hogares con servicio de TV por cable creció en 8,9 puntos porcentuales, el de Internet en 4 puntos y los
hogares con computadora en 8,4 puntos porcentuales. Los hogares que tienen telefonía
fija continuó con su tendencia creciente, incrementándose en 2,4 puntos porcentuales
respecto al año 2005.

member that has mobile phone system. The possession of a

En el país, el 74,9% (14 millones) de la población urbana tiene edad para
desempeñar una actividad económica. De esta población el 69,8% es económicamente

En el 2007, la población ocupada urbana dependiente (empleados y obreros), representa el 49,1% del total de ocupados. Respecto al año 2005, se ha incrementado en 2,2 puntos porcentuales. Una tercera parte de la PEA ocupada urbana son trabajadores independientes.
En el área urbana del país, las actividades de manufactura y construcción dan ocupación al 14,1% y 5,1% de la población. El Comercio absorbe al 22,7% de la fuerza laboral del país, y otros servicios alrededor del 40%.

In the 2007, the dependent urban working population (employed and working), represents the 49.1% of the total of working people. With respect to the year 2005, it has been increased in 2.2 percentage points. A third part of the urban working EAP are independent workers.
In the urban area of the country, the activities of manufacture and construction give occupation to the 14.1% and 5.1% of the population. The Commerce absorbs the 22.7% of the labor force of the country, and other services around the 40%.

Alrededor de una tercera parte de la PEA ocupada del área urbana de los Departamentos de Huánuco, Lambayeque, Puno y Tacna se dedican al Comercio (mayorista y minorista), mientras que más del 30 por ciento de la PEA urbana de los Departamentos de Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Lima y Pasco, se encuentran ocupadas en Otros Servicios.
Los ocupados en actividades Industriales o Manufactureras, en mayor proporción se encuentran en los Departamentos de Lima, Arequipa, La Libertad, Áncash, Puno e Ica.
Around a third part of the working EAP of the urban area of the departments of Huanuco, Lambayeque, Puno and Tacna are dedicated to the Commerce (wholesale and retail), while more than 30 percent of the EAP urban of the departments of Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Lima and Pasco, are working in other services 1/.

En cambio, en los Departamentos de menor pobreza relativa, la PEA ocupada en actividades

Como consecuencia del mayor dinamismo de la actividad económica observada en los últimos años, el ingreso promedio proveniente del trabajo de los trabajadores del área urbana del país, aumentó en 10,1%, lo que equivale a 88,5 nuevos soles. Desde el año 2002, la actividad económica muestra un registro ascendente. En el año 2007, el crecimiento del PBI se atribuye al impulso de la demanda interna, en particular, en la Formación Bruta de Capital Fijo (23,3%), así como el aumento de las Exportaciones (6,2%). El crecimiento anualizado de la producción nacional (marzo 2007febrero 2008) fue de 9,23%, manteniendo un crecimiento sostenido en esta fase expansiva de la economía del país.

The economic activity show an upward registration since the year 2002. The growth of the GDP by the side of the expense in the 2007, it is attributed to the impulse of the internal demand, particularly, in the Gross Fixed Capital Formation (23,3%), as well as the increase of the Exports (6,2%). 23,3%, siendo la tasa de expansión más elevada que se registra desde 1994, año en que la inversión creció en
33,7%. El dinamismo observado de la inversión en
el 2007, impulsa el crecimiento del PBI en 8,9%.

The Agricultural sector reached in the last 10 years an average growth of 4,2%. In 2007 the sector showed a growth of 3,1%, this behavior was sustained in the increment of the area harvested in the production zones of the main agricultural cultivations. En el año 2007, en el norte del país destacó la producción de mango y limón en Piura, maracuyá y la caña de azúcar en Lambayeque, fríjol y arveja en Cajamarca y espárragos en La Libertad. In the year 2007; in the north of the country, it stood out the production of mango and lemon in Piura; the passion fruit and the sugar cane in Lambayeque; the Bean and Vetch in Cajamarca and the asparagus in La Libertad. In the center, the strawberries and apples in Lima; the potato and tea in Huanuco; the achiote (bixa orrellana) and granadilla in Pasco, the spinach and carrot in Junín. In the south, the Lima bean and pecan in Ica; the prickly pear in Ayacucho and Huancavelica; the onion in Arequipa; the olive and oregano in Tacna; the tea and the achiote in Cusco; and the oca (oxalis tuberosa) and quinua in Puno. In the forest, the coconut, yucca and papaya in San Martin, Loreto, Ucayali and Madre de Dios .

El procesamiento industrial de los productos pesqueros en el 2007 fue de 2045,1 miles de TMB, registrándose un incremento de 3,4% con respecto al 2006, debido principalmente al mayor procesamiento del congelado marítimo (7,5%) y el curado continental (39,7%) para el consumo directo. Asimismo, se incrementó la fabricación de harina de pescado (3,3%) y el aceite crudo (10,2%) para el consumo indirecto.

En el 2006 el nivel de la biomasa total de anchoveta, registrado entre febrero abril, fue menor que lo registrado el año anterior, debido al brusco calentamiento experimentado por el mar en la región norte, ocurrida durante la segunda quincena del mes de febrero. Sin embargo en la zona central el desarrollo fue normal. Además, registró un decrecimiento de la especie caballa, caso contrario sucedió con la especie jurel que mostró un aumento de la biomasa.

En el año 2006 las reservas de los principales metales crecieron de manera importante, destacando las de plata, cobre y plomo. Durante el 2007, el Perú se ubicó en el primer lugar como principal productor de plata del mundo y escaló a la segunda posición en el ranking de productores de cobre y zinc. During the 2007, Peru was located in the first place as main silver producer of the world and scaled to the second position in the ranking of producers of copper and zinc. It is maintained in the fifth place of the world production of gold. In Latin America, Peru heads the production silver, gold, zinc, tin and lead and it is the second producer of cooper and molybdenum.

La producción de gas natural alcanzó una expansión de 50,7% en el año 2007, como resultado de la consolidación de las operaciones de Pluspetrol Perú Corporation en la explotación del lote 88 Camisea. The production of natural gas reached an expansion of 50,7% in the year 2007, as a consequence of the consolidation of the operations of Pluspetrol Peru Corporation in the exploitation of the lot 88 Camisea. La dinámica de la actividad de la construcción muestra un comportamiento creciente. En los dos últimos años registra tasas de crecimiento superiores al 10%, registrando un incremento de 14,8% en el 2006 y de 16,5% en el año 2007; suceso reflejado en la expansión del consumo interno de cemento y la mayor inversión en las obras de construcción, rehabilitación y mantenimiento de las carreteras nacional y regionales, rehabilitación de caminos vecinales, mantenimiento de caminos rurales y mejoras de caminos de herradura.

The dynamic of the construction activity shows a growing behaviour. In the two last years, it records growth rates over the 10%, registering an increment of 14.8% in the 2006 and of 16,5% in the year 2007; event reflected in the expansion of the internal consumption of cement and the greater investment in the construction work, rehabilitation and maintenance of the national and departmental highways, rehabilitation of neighborhood roads, maintenance of rural roads and improvements of bridle roads.

La producción de cemento muestra un crecimiento
sostenido en el 2007, creció en 7,8% con respecto a
2006, el despacho local de cemento también subió en
15,1% y el consumo interno de cemento en 16,1%, debido
a las mayores inversiones privadas realizadas en los diferentes sectores de la economía; así como las mayores obras públicas

31% in the last three years. To March of the present year the length of the national road
network, that connect the departments of the country, mesures 23 thousand 838
kilometers, that represents the 23,2% of the total; the
departmental network that connect with the provinces inside each department,
mesures 19 thousand 049 kilometers, represents the
18,5% and the neighborhood network is estimateed in 60 thousand kilometers, that

La telefonía celular se ha incrementado significativamente en el 2007, creciendo en más del 77% y la televisión por cable en 16,95. Por su parte, el total de líneas fijas en servicio pasó de 2 millones 401 mil líneas, en el 2006 a 2 millones 673 mil en el 2007; mayor en 11,3%.

Las operaciones del gobierno central tuvieron, en los últimos años, un resultado negativo. Sin embargo, en los dos últimos años (2006 y 2007), el resultado económico tuvo un saldo positivo, representando el 1,4% y 1,8% del PBI respectivamente; explicado por el crecimiento de los ingresos corrientes, revertiendo la tendencia negativa observada hasta el año 2005.
The operations of the central government had in recent years a negative result. Nevertheless, in the two last years (2006 and 2007), the overall balance had a positive result that represents the 1,4% and 1,8% of the GDP respectively, explained by the growth of the current incomes, reverting the negative tendency observed to the year 2005.

En el 2007, la exportación total alcanzó los 27 mil 956
millones de US dólares, representando la exportación tradicional el 76,9% del total. A partir del 2004, se observa un aumento sostenido de la
participación de la exportación no tradicional en el total exportado llegando en el 2007 al 22,5%, destacando
los productos textiles, agropecuarios, químicos y
sidero metalúrgicos y joyerías.

La recaudación aduanera viene incrementándose
sostenidamente. En el año 2007 creció en 18,2% con
relación al año 2006. Este comportamiento se
explicó por el mayor monto recaudado por concepto de
impuesto general a las ventas (42,4%) y el impuesto selectivo al consumo
(26,2%).

En el 2007, la deuda externa total registró, un saldo de 31 mil 361 millones de US dólares, siendo superior en 10,8% al monto de 2006. Este resultado estuvo asociado al aumento de la deuda de corto plazo (59,9%) y en menor medida por la deuda de mediano y largo plazo (5,0%).

El nivel de reservas internacionales netas del sistema bancario, ascendió a 26 mil 347 millones de US dólares. El importante incrementó, de 8 829 millones de US dólares, respecto al año 2006, se debe a la mejora registrada por la tenencia de divisas de la autoridad monetaria en 10 414 millones US dólares. Ello atenuó la contracción mostrada por las reservas del resto del sistema, las cuales se contrajeron en 1 585 millones de US dólares.
The level of net international reserves of the banking system increased to 26 thousand 347 millions US dollars. The important increase of 8 829 million US dollars, with respect to the year 2006, it is due to the improvement registered by the possession of currencies of the monetary authority in 10 414 millons US dolares. los metales preciosos presentaron alzas: el oro subió 15,4% y la plata
15,9%. El precio del petróleo se
elevó en 6,6%. En tanto, la cotización del zinc se contrajo en 1,0%.

En el año 2007 el monto ascendió a 16 mil 69 millones de US dólares, incrementándose respecto al 2006 en 3,34%. Entre los sectores que registraron una mayor participación figuran comunicaciones (23,1%), minería (20,2%), industria (17,7%), finanzas (16,2%) y energía (10,3%), entre otras.

Durante el año 2007, la mayoría de los países de la
región de América Latina han registrado tasas de crecimiento
elevado, destacando el dinamismo de la economía peruana que se expandió en
8,9%, ubicándose en la segunda posición del ranking de países
latinoamericanos de mayor crecimiento el que fue liderado por Panamá; en un contexto de
alta volatilidad del mercado financiero internacional
derivado en gran medida de la crisis en el mercado financiero
de Estados Unidos.

En el año 2007 se acentuó el ritmo de inflación en varios países de América Latina, como efecto de las alzas en los precios internacionales de los alimentos, el petróleo y sus derivados; registrándose los mayores incrementos en Bolivia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Chile y Panamá. En este entorno, el Perú con una variación de 3,9%, se ubicó entre los cinco países con tasas de inflación anual menor al 5% al igual que Ecuador, México, Brasil y El Salvador
In the year 2007, the rhythm of inflation in different countries of Latin America was accentuated as effect of the rises in the international prices of the food, the petroleum and its by products, it registered the greater increments in Bolivia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Chile and Panama. In this environment, Peru with a variation of 3,9%, was located among the five countries with smaller annual inflation rates to the 5% just like Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil and El Salvador.
