Rusia 2018 ya se está jugando. Desde el sorteo en San Petersburgo que se oye el sonido de la pe-lota. Y en octubre comenzará oficialmente, ante Ecuador, en nuestro país. Con el recuerdo de Brasil 2014 todavía fresco, con el orgullo todavía firme por el subcampeonato mundial, las Elimi-

natorias inauguran el camino hacia una nueva Copa del Mundo.

Son más de 200 países los que pujan por una de las 32 plazas que componen la cita. La historia ha dado pruebas de que, a pesar del potencial del fútbol argentino, el camino no es senci-llo. Pero esta generación que conforma la Selección invita a la ilusión. Y a depositarle confianza. Futbolistas súper profesio-nales, multilaureados (Lionel Messi viene de ser elegido “Me-jor jugador de Europa” en la ceremonia del último sorteo de la Liga de Campeones), contagian con su espíritu amateur cada vez que son llamados a ponerse la camiseta de la Selección. Argentina viene de exhibir su jerarquía en la Copa América de Chile, donde llegó a la final, y ahora se embarca en un nuevo anhelo colectivo, la posibilidad de volver a soñar en Rusia.

Comienza el Mundial. En esta primera etapa, yendo y vinien-do por Sudamérica, luchando en cuotas por el pasaje a Rusia. Todo el fútbol argentino acompaña a nuestros futbolistas y al cuerpo técnico. Y juega, igual que ellos, con el corazón.

E s hermoso volver a vivir la sensación que provoca ganar la Libertadores. una experiencia realmente muy fuerte. Porque River siempre tuvo grandes ju-gadores y equipos, pero la historia de la copa le ha sido muchas veces esquiva. Por eso fue que nos preparamos para

ser competitivos y no padecer lo que, por ejemplo, pa-decí yo cuando formaba parte de enormes planteles a los que siempre les faltaba algo... A este equipo, por el contrario, no le faltaron carácter ni inteligencia.

y así nos fuimos fortaleciendo. empezamos a creer que, para ganarnos, los adversarios iban a tener que correr y jugar bastante. en definitiva, fuimos incómo-dos para los rivales. estuvimos cerca de quedar afue-ra en primera fase y desde ahí empezamos a sentirnos fuertes porque no nos podían terminar de quebrar. nos doblaban, sí, pero no nos quebraron. y entonces resurgimos. nos reinventamos.

de entrada, en los tramos iniciales de mi ciclo, des-plegamos un fútbol de bastante vuelo, pero después nos debimos acomodar a otras circunstancias. Por-que la copa se juega de otra forma, en circunstancias difíciles. Las competiciones en Sudamérica tienen un condimento especial, nada que ver con lo que sucede en europa. Acá no te preparan una alfombra roja como allá, donde además las distancias a recorrer son más

cortas y el clima es parejo... Acá, en cambio, hay frío, calor, altura, llano y tenés que salir a jugar. Lo que quiero decir es que el sabor de ganar en Sudamérica es único. no es fácil porque se juega como vivimos, con demasiada adrenalina y euforia, con una pasión desbordada y desequilibrada.

el gran mérito de estos jugadores de River es que nunca se achicaron. Seguramente va a ser cada vez más complicado conseguir títulos, pero hay que se-guir siendo competitivos y no relajarse. tenemos que defender la Sudamericana, un torneo que va bien con nuestra manera de jugar, con partidos de eliminacio-nes directas, duelos de 180 minutos: este equipo pue-de ganar o perder, pero no creo que te deje a gamba, ya que tiene hambre, temperamento y está mental-mente preparado para jugar finales. y en ese sentido, ante la posibilidad de enfrentar al barcelona en una hipotética final del Mundial de clubes, mi idea siem-pre es intentar jugar de igual a igual contra cualquier rival, y tengo un equipo que está preparado para eso. Sería una falta de mi parte afrontar ese compromiso pensando que no lo podemos ganar. Recuerdo que cuando disputamos la intercontinental en 1996, la Juventus nos pasó por arriba físicamente, no nos dio una chance... Ahora, en cambio, siento que estamos listos para competir con el barcelona.

M ás allá del paso del tiempo y de la lógica evolu-ción del fútbol, en la Copa Libertadores hay va-lores colectivos que vinculan a muchos equipos

que resultaron ganadores en diversos momentos de la historia. River hoy se corona a partir de una base sólida, sostenida, de un evidente sentido de pertenencia en sus jugadores y de una defensa que luce inquebrantable y se recita de memoria. Eso mismo, justamente, que te-nían los cuadros campeones de América que yo integré: Comisso-López-Sá-Pavoni en las cuatro vueltas con Independiente; Pernía-Mouzo-Sá-Tarantini (Bordón) en las dos con Boca. En la paridad, las individualidades ha-cen la diferencia, pero los grandes equipos de la Copa suelen empezar por buenas defensas.

P ara ganar la Copa se necesitan, fundamen-talmente, buenos jugadores y un equipo que sepa interpretar una idea. No existen méto-

dos específicos ni recetas mágicas; el único secreto, en todo caso, es entender cómo se juegan los parti-dos en instancias decisivas, donde se deben reducir los errores a cero porque la mínima equivocación te puede dejar afuera. En la Libertadores son to-das finales, no hay rivales fáciles y, cuando vas de visitante, sos muy pero muy visitante. Por eso es primordial tener un equipo con personalidad para bancarse ese tipo de situaciones y, en tal sentido, el carácter y el deseo de ganar del futbolista argen-tino superan los parámetros normales. Nuestra liga es difícil para jugar, difícil para dirigir, y es de las pocas en el mundo en las que el primero va a jugar contra el último y no sabe cómo va a salir. Faltan fi-guras rutilantes porque se las llevan principalmente de Europa y, así y todo, no dejan de aparecer muy buenos jugadores que saben cómo encarar las duras competiciones continentales. N o creo que haya una receta específica para ganar copas internacionales, porque, si así fuera, la usaríamos todos los técnicos. En

una competición como la Libertadores, que pre-senta varios obstáculos, con viajes muy largos y sin poder desatender el torneo local, es el equipo el que te va encaminando al objetivo: depende mu-cho del temple que demuestran los jugadores en los momentos clave. De repente, debe aparecer un espíritu diferente en determinadas circunstancias y eso te termina convenciendo o dándote el último impulso para llegar al título. En la Copa Sudameri-cana 2013 que obtuvimos con Lanús, por ejemplo, la mística que necesita un equipo que anhela llegar lejos apareció en la cancha de River, donde gana-mos 3-1 luego de haber empatado 0-0 como locales. Y, ya hablando en términos generales, por lo que se está viendo en el último tiempo, el carácter del ju-gador argentino resalta mucho por sobre el resto de los rivales continentales.

U no de los orgullos que tiene la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino y, claro,

la Selección, es el predio Julio hum-berto grondona. y no es casual: es que amén del cuidado diario que to-dos los empleados le dan, en ezeiza no hay freno para las mejoras. Por caso, en el último tiempo se dieron tres cambios importantes, todos en el complejo número dos.

gracias a la gestión de Luis Segura, presidente de la AFA, Rubén Mos-chela, director del predio, y dona-to villani, coordinador médico de Selecciones nacionales, una nueva sala de kinesiología con el mejor equipamiento ya se encuentra habilitada junto a la utilería de la Mayor. también cerquita, en el gim-nasio, se renovaron las cintas para correr y las bicicletas por máquinas de última generación.

Pero acaso el broche de oro sea el nuevo edificio del cuerpo técnico. desde su vuelta al trabajo post copa América, gerardo Martino y sus co-laboradores tienen oficinas nuevas, sala de videoanálisis y de reuniones, independientes del complejo dos y abastecidas por el mejor mobiliario y una tecnología de punta.

One of the big prides of the Argentine Football Asso-ciation, and of course the

national team, is the Julio hum-berto grondona complex. this is not a coincidence: besides the daily dedication from every em-ployee, there’s no stopping the improvements at ezeiza. For ex-ample, in the last few weeks, three important changes took place, all of them in the number 2 complex.

thanks to the work of Luis Segura, AFA President, Rubén Moschela, ezeiza’s director and donato vil-lani, Medical coordinator of na-tional teams, a new physiotherapy room has been opened next to the kitman’s office. Also close by, at the gym, the treadmills and bi-cycles were upgraded with a new line of machines.

Perhaps, the icing on the cake is no other than the new building for the coaching staff. ever since they came back from copa America, gerardo Martino and his staff now have new offices, a room for video analysis and meetings. these are independent from the number 2 complex and fully equipped with furniture and new technology.

C omo un volcán en calma antes de hacer erupción. Así está el protagonista de esta historia. un tipo frontal, divertido, que contagia en cada entrena-

miento. una imagen perfecta para sus dirigidos, que no dejan de ser chicos a pesar de romperla en las infe-riores de sus clubes. Motivador nato, este dt que llevó a la Sub 17 al subcampeonato en el último Sudamerica-no en Paraguay, ahora se tira de cabeza para lograr su sueño. el sueño del plantel. el sueño de todos de poder levantar el máximo trofeo de la categoría en la final del Mundial, que se jugará el domingo 8 de noviembre en el estadio Sausalito de viña del Mar. “es nuestro gran anhelo, el que perseguimos todos los que conforma-mos el cuerpo técnico y el que quieren los jugadores: traer la copa que falta en las vitrinas de la AFA”, se en-tusiasma Miguel Ángel Lemme, el hombre en cuestión.

Marzo queda allá lejos en el tiempo. Los goles de co-nechny, que ya pisó la Reserva de San Lorenzo, y las atajadas de Petroli, arquerito con gran futuro en Ri-ver, son parte del pasado. Aquél fue un equipo que se hizo fuerte puertas adentro y que explotó después de perder sus dos primeros partidos. hoy, varios de esos guerreros están en plena recuperación, pero el cabe-zón esperará por su evolución. “hay algunos chicos que vienen golpeados y ojalá que se puedan recuperar durante esta pretemporada. estamos trabajando con 30 jugadores y de ahí saldrán los 21 que integrarán la nómina definitiva del torneo”, explica Lemme, quien tiene mucha confianza en sus dirigidos y así lo hace saber: “estoy convencido de que estos chicos pueden dar mucho en chile”. ¡vamos los pibes!

Lemme viene trabajando con la base de los convoca-dos desde hace ya dos años. Son caras conocidas que vio jugar en sus clubes y llevó a la Selección por buenos rendimientos. es más, muchos de ellos vivieron hace unos meses un acontecimiento único en sus vidas. tuvieron la posibilidad de compartir con sus ídolos el mismo campo de juego. ¿Por qué? en chile, suelo don-de también competirán por el Mundial, sirvieron como sparrings de la Selección del tata Martino durante la copa América. “Les quise dar un premio a chicos que no fueron al Sudamericano para que tuvieran ese in-centivo de poder estar con los jugadores de la Mayor”. A natural-born motivator, this manager who led the u17 to the title at the latest South American cham-pionship in Paraguay, now goes all-in to achieve his dream. his team’s dream. the dreams of a whole nation to lift the ultimate trophy of this age category, which will be disputed in the final, on Sunday 8 november at the Sausalito Stadium in viña del Mar. “this is our great dream, the one everyone in our coaching staff and every player in our team chase: to bring home the only trophy missing from the AFA cabinet”, Miguel Án-gel Lemme gets excited as he speaks.

Marzo is now far behind in time. those goals from co-nechny, a player who has already played for the San Lorenzo Reserves, and the saves from Petroli, a River Plate goalkeeper with a great future ahead, are now in the past. that was a team which got strong behind closed doors and that showed their best version after losing their first two matches. today, many of those little warriors are coming back from injuries, but “big head” will wait for their progress. “there are some kids carrying knocks and i hope they can recover during this pre-season. Si no era en la zona, nos podrían haber tocado más adelante, en las rondas siguientes. nosotros ya estuvimos analizando videos de los tres”, avisa el dt.

cada vez queda menos para cruzar la cordillera. Men-talizado en obtener el título que le falta a la Albiceles-te, Lemme se enfoca plenamente en la recta final de la preparación. “es nuestro sueño”, repite sin cesar. La ilusión Mundial ya está en marcha.

P uro trabajo. y desde el silen-cio. Así, con humildad y sacri-ficio, se desarrolla un día en

la vida laboral de los miembros de Mantenimiento, que llenan de color el predio en el que se forjan los sue-ños de un pueblo entero: nada menos que el argentino. es que todas las Se-lecciones nacionales conviven en el Julio grondona, cómoda y pintoresca segunda casa gracias al aporte de carlos Soto y su equipo, que nutren a los dos complejos (Juveniles y Ma-yor) emplazados en ezeiza.

y las tareas comienzan a primera hora, antes de que lleguen las delega-ciones futbolísticas y los demás co-legas que trabajan embanderados en celeste y blanco. Porque la atención es clave para el despertar del predio. Sí, hay que revisar; ésa sería la prime-ra etapa: si algo está fallando, desde un proyector en la sala de video hasta el foco de alguno de los dos comedo-res, Pablo valcarce se encarga de so-lucionarlo. Pero si él no está disponi-ble en ese momento, puede ser otro miembro del staff el que lo arregle, ya que la polifuncionalidad es requi-sito indispensable para formar parte del sector de Mantenimiento.

una segunda etapa diaria podría re-sumirse como decorativa: cada uno

de los terrenos linderos a los comple-jos en los que se instalan las delega-ciones argentinas está monitoreado de cerca por los habitantes de villa Manolito. Así se les llama, en honor a un antiguo referente del sector, a los expertos que dominan el arte de dar-les vida a los espacios verdes que ha-cen brillar la inmensidad del predio.

el tercer período laboral viene acom-pañado de una gran responsabilidad: ambientar la sala de conferencias, la sala de videos o algún parquizado. Mantenimiento, claro, dispone las ubicaciones de los intérpretes y, ade-más, controla minuto a minuto que el evento se lleve a cabo a la perfección.

La cuarta parte tiene carácter de guardia: sucede cuando una Selec-ción se aloja en el predio, situación que amerita la estadía de parte del personal para trabajar en conjunto con el cuerpo técnico y el plantel.

¿Algo más? carpintería, pintura, so-nido, climatización de oficinas. La esencia del complejo habitacional de ezeiza. correcta definición para el staff de Mantenimiento. ¿Lo más sor-prendente? todas las etapas men-cionadas, en realidad, despliegan su efectividad en sintonía. Se trata del motor del Predio Julio grondona.

P ure work. Away from the spotlight. that’s how goes on, in a humble and sacrifi-

ced way, a day in the life of the main-tenance staff, who bring colour to a place where dreams are shaped for an entire nation: no other than the Argentine. because every national team coexists at the Julio grondona complex, comfortable and colourful second home thanks to the work of carlos Soto and his team, which supports both complexes (youth and Full national teams) located in ezeiza. the tasks begin very early, before the players and other blue and white colleagues arrive.

Attention to detail is key for everything to run smoothly in the ear-ly hours. yes, there is service needed; that would be the first stage: if some-thing is not working, from a projector in the video room to a light bulb in the lunch area, Pablo valcarce takes care of fixing it. but if he is not available in that moment, it can be another staff member who fixes it, because being able to multi-task is a must to be a part of the maintenance team.

A second daily stage could be des-cribed as decorative: each of the adjacent parcels to the complexes where the Argentine players are ba-

sed, is closely monitored by the people of villa Manolito. that’s how they called, in honour to an old member of the maintenance team, the experts in giving new life to the green spaces that make the immense place glow brighter.

the third stage comes with a great responsibility: to set up the press conference room, the video room or one of the many gardens. Maintenance, of course, sets the speakers’ places and controls every minute of the event to make sure it works perfectly.

the fourth stage is similar to a guard: because when a national team is staying overnight, the si-tuation calls for part of the staff to stay and work hand in hand with the coaching staff and the players.

is there anything else? carpentry, painting, sound, room heating. the essence of the habitable complex of ezeiza. that’d be the correct de-finition for the maintenance staff. What’s more surprising? All of the stages just mentioned, in truth, ha-ppen at the same time. it’s the motor of the Julio grondona complex.

With this achievement, Argentina claim their second copa America title (the previous one was in Paraguay in 2003) and the third continental vic-tory considering the qualifiers played in gramado in 2012.

P uede hacerlo con los boti-nes bien ajustados o en pies descalzos, con canilleras y

medias altas o con las piernas ex-puestas al sol, puede buscarse la vida en las rudas áreas del Ascenso o moverse por las arenas blancas de las playas más exóticas, pero lo que no puede Facundo Minici es imagi-narse una vida sin fútbol.

“empecé como todo pibe, jugando entre amigos, en el barrio, y recién cuando terminé el colegio me probé en River: entré en Reserva y, para mí que soy hincha del club, ya era el sueño cumplido”, cuenta el delante-ro, de 33 años. Sin embargo, no fue en núñez donde comenzó a mostrar sus condiciones: “Me hice bien des-de abajo, jugué en la d para Ferro-carril urquiza, ahí convertí muchos goles, eso me dio cierta chapa, y entonces empezaron a llegar ofer-tas. Pasé a Fénix, a préstamo, y en el primer año conseguimos subir a la c”. también tuvo una posterior esca-la en Acassuso, donde aún juega su hermano nicolás, pero el vínculo con el Fútbol Playa arrancó cuando to-davía vestía la camiseta del cuervo.

“tenía permiso para ir a entrenar-me. Lo de la Selección era puro amor, algo incomparable, y por eso en 2005 me dieron licencia para ir al Mundial de Río de Janeiro”, recuerda el tanque, quien en 2012 se alejó del deporte, pero el año pasado volvió a entrenarse en las arenas del pre-dio de ezeiza para ganarse el ticket al Mundial de Portugal. y mientras sueña con pisar nuevamente el ver-de césped y “cerrar mi carrera ju-gando con mi hermano”, Minici sigue proyectando con el Fútbol Playa: “Si hago el sacrificio de entrenarme todas las semanas es para llegar a la final de un Mundial. Quiero ganar algo con la Selección”.

fully exposed to the sun, he can fight for a living in the tough grounds of the lower leagues or move around the most exotic white-sand beaches, but what Facundo Minici can’t do is to imagine life without football.

“i started like every other kid, playing among friends, in my neighbourhood. it was only after i finished school that i went to have a trial at River: i made my way into the Reserves and for me, a River fan, it was a dream come true”, says the 33-year-old striker. however, it wasn’t in núñez where he started showing his ability: “i made my way up from the very bottom, as i played in Primera d for Ferrocarril urquiza, where i scored a lot of goals, which gave me some reputation and i received some offers. i transferred to Fénix, on loan, and in my first year, we managed to get promotion to Pri-mera c”. he also had a spell at Acas-suso, where his brother nicolás still plays, but his relationship with beach soccer started when he still wore the shirt of “el cuervo”.

“i had permission to go and train. the national team is pure love, something you can’t compare, and that is why in 2005, they gave me permission to go to the Rio de Janeiro World cup”, re-members “el tanque”, who in 2012 got away from the sport, only to return last year in the sands of the ezeiza complex to earn himself a place in the squad for the World cup in Portu-gal. P osada Las Águilas tiene fa-chada y comodidades típicas de un hotel para turistas,

pero actualmente, semana tras se-mana, alberga ideales, llantos, risas y temores de 12 chicas menores de 17 años que se ilusionan con poder vestir la celeste y blanca en los próximos Sudamericanos Juveniles, aún con fecha a confirmar.

con la timidez característica de la edad, yuliana costilla y elen Lero-yer, oriundas de tucumán y Santa Fe, respectivamente, cuentan cómo llevan la distancia con sus familias: “cuesta un poco, pero no es difícil porque estamos haciendo lo que nos gusta. Son tres días por semana y sabemos que desde casa nos es-tán apoyando. Además, acá somos una gran familia, como hermanas”.

A pesar de que recién están saliendo al mundo, las chicas debieron luchar mucho para llegar al lugar donde se encuentran ahora. Por eso, cada práctica en el predio de ezeiza, cada minuto de convivencia en el barrio uno, cada comida compartida, cada charla, valen mucho para las selec-cionadas que viajan desde Santa Fe, córdoba, tucumán, catamarca y Mi-siones. Micaela Pihuala, con la emo-ción en su mirada, recuerda quién le dio el primer empujón hacia esta aventura: “en su momento, la única que me apoyaba era mi abuela. ella siempre me decía que algún día iba a estar acá, pero, lamentablemente, no pudo verme jugar”.

Llegó la hora de prepararse para sa-lir rumbo al entrenamiento y la mú-sica empieza a sonar. cada bolso no sólo se llena de vendas, canilleras y botines, sino que lleva historias cargadas de sentimientos. Los Sud-americanos Sub 20 y 17 se acercan y ellas no se quieren quedar afuera.

With the typical shyness that comes with that age, yuliana costilla and elen Leroyer, from tucumán and San-ta Fe, respectively, talk about how they handle being away from their families: “it’s hard, but it’s not that tough because we are doing what we like most. it’s three days a week and we know that they are supporting us from back home. besides, this is like a big family, we’re like sisters”.

despite their early age, the girls had to struggle a lot to reach the place where they are now. that is why, each training session at ezeiza, every mi-nute they live together in barrio uno, every meal they share, every conver-sation, it’s valuable for these selec-ted few who travel from Santa Fe, córdoba, tucumán, catamarca and Misiones. Micaela Pihuala, with her eyes filled with emotion, remembers who was the person who first encou-raged her to take on this adventure: “back then, the only person who su-pported me was my grandma. She always used to tell me that one day i was going to be here, though unfortu-nately, she couldn’t see me play”.

time has come to get ready to lea-ve towards the training ground and music is present. each bag it’s not only filled with bandage, shinpads and boots, it’s also full of stories and sentiments. the u20 and u17 South American championships are getting closer and they don’t want to miss out on them.

J orge ignacio baliño -o nacho, para el mundo del arbitraje- es sin dudas un hombre que

vive a pura adrenalina. Fecha tras fecha, silbato en mano, se lo puede encontrar en cualquier cancha de Primera división, pero durante la semana su labor es ayudar al pró-jimo. y, con un aire de satisfacción, nos cuenta: “como referí trato de cumplir con mi tarea de la manera más justa posible; y, como bombero, creo que no hay felicidad más gran-de que ayudar a quien lo necesita. Aunque lamentablemente se tra-baja a partir de la desgracia ajena, poder salvarle la vida a una persona es algo que no tiene precio”.

baliño, ahora mismo, se encuentra en la manga pero está sin la man-guera. Para la producción con AfA revista, posa con un casco y una pelota debajo de cada brazo. del otro lado lo espera un Monumental colmado: “en el arbitraje empecé a los 18 años y fue casi por casualidad, cuando el presidente del colegio de Árbitros de la Liga tandilense me escuchó bromear con mis amigos sobre mi intención de dirigir. en-tonces él me invitó a hacer el curso y ése fue el primer paso para ena-morarme del arbitraje”. en 2005, comenzó el curso de policía y un año después ya estaba ejerciendo como bombero. y vaya si lo marcó (a fue-go, podría decirse) ese año en el que también firmó su contrato con la AFA. “ya hace una década que mis dos pasiones van a la par”, asegura baliño, quien encuentra en la “adre-nalina” el hilo que conecta a sus dos profesiones: “Por un lado, es un gran peso sobre la espalda dirigir en una cancha llena que no está a favor

tuyo; y, por el otro, ni te cuento lo que es ir en una autobomba con la sirena al mango, luego de haber re-cibido un llamado de emergencia y con la misión de salvar una vida”.

-¿qué te dicen tus pares sobre tus profesiones paralelas?

-en ambos casos las opiniones son buenas. Mis compañeros en el arbi-traje, más allá de las bromas lógi-cas, rescatan lo duro y loable que es la actividad de un bombero. y de parte de mis colegas del cuartel donde trabajo (en un pueblo llama-do chillar, a 130 kilómetros de tan-dil) recibo apoyo y, por supuesto, alguna que otra crítica, pero siem-pre con buena fe.

-¿ser bombero no te da temor?

-Siempre se debe tener miedo, ya que es el mejor sentido para estar alerta. Pero lo que no puede pasar es que el miedo te domine.

J orge ignacio baliño -or na-cho, to the refereeing world- is without a doubt, a man

who’s life is pure adrenaline. Week after week, whistle in hand, he can be found at any First division sta-dium, but during the week, his work is to help others. With an air of sa-tisfaction, he tells us: “As a referee, i try to do my work in the most just way possible; and as a fire-fighter, i think there is no greater happiness than the one you get for helping so-meone in need. though, regretfully, we work around someone else’s tra-gedy, but to be able to save someo-ne’s life is priceless”.

baliño, right now, is inside the in-flatable tunnel, but he’s carrying no hose. For this production with AfA magazine, he poses with a helmet and a football under each arm. On the other side, a full house at the Monumental awaits. “i started in refereeing when i was 18 and it was almost by chance, when the pre-sident of the board of Officials of the tandil League heard me joking about my intentions of becoming a ref. he then invited me to take the course and that was the first step in falling in love with officiating”. in 2005, he started the course of po-lice and a year later he was already working as a fire-fighter. that year left a mark (of fire, you could say) as he also signed his contract with the AFA. “it’s been a decade now that my

two passions go hand in hand”, says baliño, who finds in the adrena-

line, a common denominator between his two professions: “On one side, there is a big burden on my shoulders to

officiate in a full stadium that will never root for you; and on the other, i can’t even begin to explain what it is to be inside a fire engine with the si-rens on, after you got an emergency call with a mission to save a life”.

-what do your colleagues (at both jobs) tell you about your other activity?

-in both cases, opinions are good. My fellow refs, besides the obvious jokes, point out how hard and lauda-ble a fire-fighter’s job is. And from my colleagues at the station where i work (in a town call chillar, 130km from tandil) i get support and, of course, some criticism, but always in good faith.

-is it scary to be a fire-fighter?

-you always have to be scared, because that’s the best way to be alert. but you can’t let fear take over you.

“Llevo 12 años trabajando en yu-panqui. te da muchísimas alegrías, es un cable a tierra”, describe ho-racio gardino, profesional del tra-pero, que desarrolla su tarea los días de partido, “específicamente, el masaje previo de calentamien-to. y si alguno tiene una ‘nana’, tra-tás de dar una mano”.
