6 2013 BWHA Annual Report

PRESIDENT’S REPORT What an eventful year we have had again in 2013! The way that we have dealt with the many issues, expected and non-expected, and coped and grown, has served to reinforce the benefits of our forward planning, and highlighted the many skills and talents we have within our midst. The year started off with flooding at Downey Park – once again we donned gumboots and cleaned up. At least this time damage to contents was minimal, since equipment had been moved up on shelves, and the mowers were secure in their containers on higher ground. Plans are now being progressed to move the equipment shed to a new home on higher ground too. Our fixture season was as busy as ever, with the following activity: • Ran hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at four turf

venues and two grass venues, for over 3000 registered players. • Sent 20 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, Opens, U18,

U15, U13 and Masters as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park.

• Hosted the State Open Championships at the State Hockey Centre. These championships also utilised the turf venue at Burringbar, which added an extra complexity to the hosting arrangements. We have started to question the value and benefit of hosting championships at remote locations, where we have to bring in all the required equipment with no opportunity for revenue raising.

• Continued to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG) which was established to run the Burringbar Turf Facility. This year we have worked on grant applications for improving the spectator facilities. Whilst these have been unsuccessful to date we will continue to seek funding to improve this facility.

• Continued with our weekly half hour Hockey Zone TV show on TV4ME, together with the Hockey Zone website and YouTube clips. This year we were also able to film JT games thanks to the generosity of a sponsor and this certainly proved popular.

• Persevered with our feasibility planning for a turf facility for Downey Park. Whilst the initial response from BCC has not been positive we will continue in our endeavours for a turf at Downey Park.

We also farewelled our Regional Coaching Director Sharyn Simpson, who left us after 15 years in the position to take up a coaching role in the USA. We have been very appreciative of Sharyn’s contribution to BWHA and wish her good luck and happy coaching. With this change in personnel, together with the change in focus of Hockey Queensland to increasing participation numbers, we have restructured the position to focus on membership development. This new role will take on coach and player development, as well as development of players at all levels. In spite of the occasional challenges and difficulties we can be very proud of our achievements, and the way we have reacted to challenges. In closing I would particularly like to thank all the members of my management committee for their efforts, consideration, passion and good humour. To our dedicated volunteers – thank you, because without you we would not be able to exist. And last but not least my sincere thanks to Kath Proctor and all the BWHA staff for their ongoing support and hard work. Dr Karin Walduck President

VALE – Mary Cockings

Mary passed away in February 2013.

Mary was on the BWHA executive in the 1960’s and then returned in the 1990’s to serve on the board for 16 years including 13 years as Treasurer. She was part of the management group who steered the association through the change to a full computer accounting system. She worked tirelessly running the canteen at the SHC for two seasons when BWHA was asked to do this. In later years her passion for the Technical Bench duties saw her officiate on many games from club to national level. She also had a great passion for Downey Park and the importance it played in women’s sport in Brisbane. Mary was an Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club supporter through and through and loved her Tigers. When illness forced Mary to retire from the BWHA Management in 2008 she continued to assist the association, with Bev they opened and closed the clubhouse for bookings and events and assisted on many projects when asked. Mary is remembered fondly by many and is sadly missed at BWHA.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Planning for the two synthetic surfaces at Downey Park has continued this year. Lengthy negotiations with Brisbane City Council have proved challenging and at times frustrating. BWHA made a preliminary application, as required by Council in March 2012 to carryout works on a sporting lease and landfill. This application, according to Council, should have taken three weeks, and would allow the process to continue to a formal development application. More than seventy nine weeks later we still did not have an answer, despite lobbying elected members and senior Council staff. We finally received an ‘interim’ answer late in 2013. At the current time Council would prefer not to see a synthetic surface at Downey Park due to concerns about landfill and flooding. Council are currently considering other options to provide infrastructure and in the event that these options are not feasible, Downey Park may be revisited as an option once again. This process has tested even the strongest of us and trying to remain polite and friendly while processes stall for what seem to be no reason has been incredibly difficult. But we are strong ladies and we will not let the bureaucracy beat us. We will continue this fight until we have a site on which to build our desperately needed infrastructure. Watch this space. SECRETARY’S REPORT

Another season has come and gone. With many games played and umpired, trophies, medallions and awards won and thousands of people involved in the game we love. Again we experienced storm damage, this time in January as the storm destroyed our shade sail and resulted in heavy rain which saw damage in the equipment shed and clubhouse. Each time a disaster of this nature occurs we find another way to reduce our risk. Our damage was significantly less than in previous years due to the mitigation work and planning we have undertaken. Following this event we are looking to reduce our risk further by permanently moving our equipment above water level both in the clubhouse and via a new equipment shed and replacing whatever we can with “water friendly” materials. The rain at the beginning of the year while challenging, always brings the best out in our members, and people rallied around to assist. It is a standard joke now, that to work for BWHA you need to have a pair of “Gum Boots” to be considered for employment, but seriously the way in which the paid staff roll their sleeves up & just clean the mess is something that should not be under-estimated, it is not part of their job description, but it has to be done, so they get on and do it. Thank you to them and to the volunteers who gave up their time to gurney, sweep, wash and scrub the mud away, your assistance is vital to our association bouncing back from all trials thrown at us. However, it certainly gives a reality check when you see the devastation to others and in 2013 Bundaberg Hockey Association were severely hit. The members of BWHA donated $5000 to the Bundaberg Hockey Association re-development fund. We hope they are back up and fully functional in the near future. We know they are a hardy lot in Bundaberg and managed to play fixtures and field rep teams throughout the year despite the enormous impact the floods had on the city. With every down, there is also a plus, the rain assisted the fields early in the year and they looked green and ready for play in April due to the hard work of Noala, John, Meg and the other members of the Grounds Committee. Well done to all involved on your hard work. We have built a stronger bond between Brisbane Softball and BWHA during the past few years, which is essential to maximise the Downey Park precinct as a shared facility. We look forward to even stronger links in the future. Planning for 2013 started in October 2012, with 5 Management meetings held during October and November providing calendars, budgets and directions for 2013. We again asked for clubs input via a questionnaire. We appreciate the clubs taking the time to complete this, so we can make decisions that best suit the majority of our members. I know it is a bit of a cliché but there really is very little off season for those involved at club or BWHA level. Thank you to everyone who gives their time to make hockey “happen” in Brisbane – we couldn’t do it without you. At the AGM Karin Walduck welcomed Andrew Woodrick from the Active After School Care program. Andrew thanked the meeting for the opportunity to present an AASC Award to Janene McCall. Janene had run 8 programs in 2012 working with over 200 children and introducing them to the world of hockey. This is just one example of the wide ranging and far reaching programs BWHA provides and we should be justly proud of all our members and their service to our sport. Bronwyn Morris (Senior Section) and Kristin Muir (Junior Section) were named as our 2012 Volunteers of the Year.

9 2013 BWHA Annual Report

BWHA and BHA continued to work together throughout the year on everything from fixtures to Burringbar Park. This allows both associations to continue to focus on our own members and link when needed on shared or joint ventures, giving us the best of both worlds. Thank you in particular to Greg, Paul, Kim and Mick for all your assistance in 2013. Summer hockey was again run in October to December in 2012 at the SHC and at BP, Jenny Heron and Leah Wenzel ensured draws, workers and umpires were organised to allow people to enjoy hockey in a social and fun environment. The 2013 season started with our first Council Meeting on the 29th January, this meeting as normal was full of all the details for the coming season, with a few new items:

o A new database and registration system from Hockey Australia o A central sign-on initiative with Hockey Queensland o Hockey Zone being aired on TV4ME at 7.30pm Thursday nights

This signalled the start of another very busy season and club delegates left the meeting with much paperwork and processes to follow to get our season running. In February we were advised on the passing of Life Member Mary Cockings which was a sad occasion for all who knew her.

March saw Louisa Begley, Queensland Manager - Good Sports at our Council Meeting. Good Sports was established by the Australian Drug Foundation in Victoria to try to tackle the alcohol problems and unhealthy culture in sports. The original program created was based on alcohol. The whole program was aimed at making sports family friendly and giving a positive message to children. The Good Food component was then introduced. The program is aimed at grass roots through to professional level. BWHA had signed up for the Good Sports Program and Louisa presented Karin Walduck with the Good Sports - Level 1 Certificate. A Good Sports Promotional Day was organised for Saturday 20th April at Downey Park from 9.00am to 1.00pm. At this major event many prominent politicians were at the fields and BWHA was awarded its Level 2 certificate.

During April the office staff did a sterling job with the start of the season, hosting the State Open Tournament and myself being away for the whole month. The ladies in the office had to learn a number of new tasks to cover for my absence and I thank them for all their efforts in ensuring all ran smoothly while I was away. We also saw a number of our Life Members organise a “Past Players” get together in 2013. This was an expansion of our regular Life Members season welcome, one was held in April and then another in August. These we hope will become a regular occurrence, to bring hockey friends back together. We look forward to these in 2014.

In June Leah Wenzel left our employment to return to fulltime study, she was a kind, friendly and quietly spoken employee going out of her way to assist everyone. It was sad to lose her, but we expect great things from her in the future. Leah was replaced in July with Lisa Donaldson and we wish Lisa well in this position. June also saw Ronda Nix awarded an OAM for services to hockey. Congratulations Ronda on this award, just recognition for the many volunteer hours you have given.

Throughout the year Sonya Fisher continued to work very hard in gaining grants for our association, she is constantly on the lookout for opportunities from the BCC, State and Federal Governments and the Gambling Funds. We received funding for Officials Development and Accreditation in 2013 and for a sprinkler system on Fields 10, 11, 12

10 2013 BWHA Annual Report

and while this may have caused some disruption to fixtures and trainings early in the season, it will place us in good stead for the future. Sonya has also liaised closely with our local politicians, BCC Cr Vicki Howard; State Member Robert Cavallucci and Federal Member and BWHA Patroness Teresa Gambaro and we thank them all for their support and guidance. Sonya also devoted much time to the progress of the Hockey Zone project working closely with both BHA and Paul Mills our Media Manager. The program has been highly successful and was extended to a number of other hockey events across Australia in 2013. Our thanks to Paul for his enthusiasm in growing this and to our sponsors who helped offset the large costs involved in the production of this media. Brisbane Money Management and Playworks assisted us and were featured in a business profile, Just Hockey provide equipment and coaching segments and major sponsor Powell Industrial made it possible to watch JT fixture highlights throughout the year. We know you are all part of our hockey family, but you do so much for our sport and we thank you. But what we really need is one or two dedicated female commentators, for the weekly fixtures. Do you know a budding TV host looking for experience? We would love to hear from you. The men have secured a couple of regular commentators which takes the constant weekly search out for them. BWHA would also like to be in that position in the future. Jenny Heron continued in her area of Fixtures and Grading, working with multiple committees and people within BWHA and BHA to co-ordinate fixtures, venues and finals. This is a huge area of our sport. The problems with the database fixture templates; the numerous requests for upgrading; changes to fixtures; as well as liaising with BHA means this is a very large job. Jenny will be stepping down from the fixtures committee this year after 20 years working in this area. Jenny will continue to be involved in the turf grading and will assist the new fixture committee in 2014 (if required), but it is time for some “new blood”, thank you Jenny for all your hard work over many years. Thanks also to Lesley Bennett and her committee for looking after the Masters fixtures. Thank you to Meg Brodie, Christine Blanchard and Margie Brown for taking on the Turf, Grass and Masters Match Secretary positions. Your efforts in ensuring clubs remained within our registration rules is vital to our association. Our representative teams again were very successful at all levels. We are lucky to have such a great Development Team of Sharyn, Sue and Regie creating opportunities for our player and coach development. It takes much organisation and planning to allow so many people to be involved at representative levels, so congratulations to our Development Team for a job well done. Thank you to all selectors, who give up many hours watching fixtures and trials to select the best teams possible, and to our volunteer coaches, managers and umpires who travel with the teams. Full details of the results follow in this report. Sharyn indicated half way through 2013 that she would be leaving BWHA at the end of the year to explore other opportunities, 15 years in one job is a long time. So we started planning for what would happen in 2014 without her. Unfortunately (or fortunately for Sharyn) a job offer came to Sharyn which meant she would leave us in early October. Sharyn has been a valued member of our association and will be greatly missed, we can never underestimate the knowledge, expertise and drive she brought to BWHA. We wish Sharyn every success with her new coaching position in the USA. It is a great shame so much hockey knowledge is leaving Australia and going overseas. With such a major change BWHA will be looking at a shift in the position Sharyn held of Regional Coaching Director to a Member Development Manager, a different focus for a new and exciting era at BWHA. It will be interesting to watch the developments in this area in 2014.

Thank you to Lesley Bennett and Sonya Fisher for their never-ending efforts in the Umpires and Technical area and to the Committee who constantly strive for improvement across this area of our sport. Thank you to our mentors in particular Jan Hadfield whose assistance and guidance is always appreciated. In 2013 we reimbursed all technical officials on senior turf fixtures, thank you to Lesley for doing the allocations and to Leah and Regie for organising the recording and payments. A special thank you to our members who continue to work in this capacity at no cost, this allows the money to be spent in other areas of our sport. In 2014 in line with our new membership development focus, part of the Development Officer’s time will be spent on umpire development. This will work in with the other development areas of players and coaches. We hope this will assist in the improvement of all levels of hockey in our association. Our Junior Committee continue to do a great job, organising and providing quality hockey for children aged 4+ to 17. Debbie Wark mentored the new Junior Committee and acted as the liaison between Management and the Junior Committee. The Junior Section of this report highlights the many achievements of our Junior Committee. This is the entry to our sport and needs new parents to become involved at all levels. Thank you to all volunteers who assisted this year, we hope a new group of volunteers can be found to run the juniors in BWHA. Debbie Wark and Jenny Heron have also been working for the past 18 months with senior clubs to produce a Points Cap system to ensure that new players to BWHA are spread amongst the clubs. A draft of this concept will be given to clubs to determine if this is the direction they wish to take in the future. Thank you to Deb, Jenny and the club delegates involved for your efforts to date. Christine Blanchard has been liaising with the BCC all year to investigate having turf surfaces at Downey Park and while we appear no closer to the goal, she will continue to work towards it. We wish Chris good luck with this endeavour, if you have any skills that you could bring to this, Chris would love to hear from you. Thank you to Tony Battams for your assistance to date. Michelle Dunning has been working in the background on Marketing, Sponsorship and Events this year. Michelle has brought a vital current players point of view to the management group and I am sure she will have an even greater impact in the next few years. Joyce Proctor, Elma Brennand and Shirley Otto continued to spend countless hours working through our archives. If you have any old records at home, before you throw them out, perhaps contact Elma to check – we may need them in our archives. They are always looking for more information. Karin, Jenny T, Joyce, Caroline, Bud, Mary, Ian, Nipper, Robbie, Kevin, Rhonda and Maria all assisted at Downey Park, either in the Canteen, Bar, Uniforms or Control Room, we have truly great volunteers. Rae and Melanie (Canteen) and Denise (Bar) provided quality service and goods to our members each Saturday, thank you for all your hard work. To our many casual workers on Saturday, thank you. A special thanks to Charli in the Saturday Office and Lorraine who filled in when Charli was not available. This is the last year Charli will be with us as she completes her university studies. We thank her for all her years of service and wish her well for the future.

I would like to thank the many volunteers at club and association level. Our association cannot survive without you, from the smallest task to the large roles all are important. While recognition of some volunteers does happen, for most it is a labour of love and commitment. It is difficult to single out individuals who work hard for hockey as we have so many great volunteers. To our President Dr Karin Walduck my heartfelt thanks, she continues to lead by example. Her logical and strategic thinking make her a wonderful asset to the association. How she fits it all into her schedule I don’t know, but she continues to provide advanced leadership and enthusiasm to our Board of Management and Association. In 2013 a number of issues have arisen that needed the expertise of our Hon Solicitor. My deepest thanks and appreciation to Sue for all her guidance and support, her wise counsel has been invaluable. Through her efforts, it has been identified that a number of areas in our Operations Manual need to be updated and this will be done ready for the 2014 season. Many of our members feel the joy of childbirth, engagements and marriages during the year and we congratulate you on these. On the other hand we also lose many loved ones or experience great loss for many reasons our condolences and thoughts go to all members who have suffered in this way. BWHA continues to grow and roles become bigger. We are constantly looking for ways to engage our members and structure tasks to fit into today’s busy lifestyle. The use of the IMG online registrations, the BWHA web page, email and this year Facebook is all part of the new technology required to communicate with our members. In the future BWHA will be looking at an App to provide quicker service for our members. Management also work to run the association within our rules to allow hockey to be played and enjoyed by all. While not all decisions may be well regarded, you can rest assured that no decision they make is taken lightly and they are always made with the basis of “what is best for our sport”. Thank you to all our Management, Committees and Officials this year, your support has been appreciated you can be justly proud of your achievements. A special thank you also to our staff who work above and beyond the call of duty. They are all passionate hockey people and it is this passion that ensures that their role at BWHA is not just a job but a commitment to the sport we all love. Kathy Proctor Secretary

TREASURER’S REPORT

I would like to acknowledge the work done by the BWHA office and in particular, Kath Proctor, that has allowed the continued smooth operation of the Association. The Association is very professionally managed and it is a credit to our hard working staff. This is highlighted by both the completion of the Financial Statements in a timely and satisfactory manner and the continued strong financial position of the Association. Well done ladies! A summary of the 2013 Financial Performance of the Association follows: • Net Assets increased to $855k • Income increased slightly to $1.347m • Expenses also increased slightly to $1.297m • Profit was also slightly lower at $19k (this was after $30k was added to the reserve in

respect to a proposed feasibility study for capital works that BWHA is considering undertaking) o Canteen and Bar sales decreased by 5% and 20% respectively o Repairs and maintenance costs slightly increased with an expanded program

• Grants o We will continue to submit grant applications wherever possible, to replace assets,

upgrade facilities, improve operations and deliver sustainable solutions for the Association. In 2013, we were successful with two grants: Qld Govt (Get Playing) – $29,160 – irrigation of Fields 10/11/12 at Downey

Park Federal Govt (FaHCSIA) – $4,500 for training and accreditation of officials

o We have also applied for a further two grants BCC (Healthy & Physical Activity) – $6,310 – Bring a Friend Day Qld Govt (Get in the Game) - $10,000 – to fund the new Umpire Officer role

• Hockey Zone o This is a joint initiative with Brisbane Hockey Association (Men’s) and had its

second year on TV4ME. We also live streamed a BWHA (& BHA) Div 1 game for the last few months of the season. We also live streamed / covered a BWHA or BHA J1 game each week within the assistance of Powell Industrial (who sponsored the J1 competition).

o We also were able to film games at some HQ championships that were held in Brisbane.

o Late in 2013, BWHA and BHA took the decision to continue with Hockey Zone in 2014 and as we are building and developing the program / format into something that can be sustained and expanded for the benefit of both Brisbane Hockey and the wider hockey community.

o In this regard we have already negotiated with HQ to cover: HA U15 and U18 Indoors Championship – finals days in January HQ Super League – finals day in June HA AHL (Womens & U13s) – finals day in October

o We are also speaking to Qld and interstate Associations in respect to covering a variety of State and Association competitions in 2014

14 2013 BWHA Annual Report

HOCKEY ZONE REPORT In 2013 Hockey Zone has posted some great numbers.

A 120% increase in website visits from 2012, this year its 22,000 – that was until the end of the season - but since the start of the AHL there has been another 21,000 visits in 3 weeks!

On You Tube in the 2012 season we received 95,000 views, this was largely due to the Kookaburras coverage, with the first shootout drawing 9,000 alone. For the 2013 season we have received a total of 89,000 You Tube hits but this reflects that we did not cover the Kookaburras this year and moved into live streaming.

Last year we live streamed a total of 25 games, this year we did that many in one week at the AHL. In total we streamed 73 games this year, with the biggest viewing audience of over 10,000 at the AHL for QLD v NSW. If we add the You tube numbers for this year with the streaming numbers we get around 140,000 on line views.

Other numbers of interest re the streaming are BHL final – 450, BWHA – 600, J1 finals – 900 (combined), AHL final – 7,000.

We also started a Facebook page late in the season and now have over 700 followers. In Summary

Hockey Zone set out this year with some key objectives, firstly to grow the audience and I think from the above you can conclude that was achieved. Another goal was to include more junior coverage and with the J1’s this year we covered 21 games as well as 3 under 13 games from the AHL and several schools games too, so I think we can tick that box. The social media has been a great way to attract the younger players and get them to share hockey content with their friends. Increasing the education of how to play hockey was an important objective this year and “The Rules Guru” was a big hit especially in country areas where umpires are a rare breed, it was a perfect accompaniment to the coaching segments which carried on from last year.

By far the biggest and hardest target was to find sources of income to help finance the show, but through the loyal and local businesses who are involved in hockey, and through the sale of air time to other associations around a third of the operating budget was covered this year, this is a vast improvement from last year.

Having included segments this year from many of the Queensland associations, been contracted by Maryborough, Ryde and Hockey Victoria, as well as continuing coverage of events such as the Super League, the name of Hockey Zone is reaching far and wide. It is recognised as the premier television program for hockey in Australia and has received praise from all quarters for the quality of the coverage. We aim to continue the great work of this year in 2014 and expect support from other regions in spreading the word about hockey.

Hockey Brisbane has in two short years created a superb vehicle to promote hockey and provide hockey coverage, the rest of Australia is envious and ready to come on board to share the costs and spoils.

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING TURF Turf Affiliations were into the BWHA office by early February and then the Challenge and Grading games were organised for the following two weeks. Redcliffe requested that they field a team in Division 2 and then QUT were asked if they would like to play in Division 1. A Challenge game was played between Bulimba 3 and St Andrews 3 which resulted in St Andrews being upgraded to Division 3. A vacancy occurred in division 5 and South Brisbane Eagles were asked if they would like to field a team on the turf again, they accepted. Grading games were also held in divisions 3 and 4 and the scores reflected the final teams in the divisions. This year BWHA continued with all turf divisions fielding 10 teams. The turf season commenced in early March, BWHA worked with BHA to coordinate TV games and the venues across Brisbane. This year we tried ‘Live Streaming’ and division 1 games were played at 8pm which caused quite a bit of angst with the coordination of these games. We will continue with the TV games again in 2014 but the timeslots could change. Thanks to Deb Wark and Frances Wright for their time and commitment during the grading process. DOWNEY PARK – GRASS

This year a total of 46 teams affiliated with BWHA for the Downey Park grass competition. Based on information supplied by clubs and final positions in 2012, the grading committee again dispensed with grading games and placed the teams in eight team divisions in DP1 and DP2, and ten team divisions in DP3-DP5. By playing fixtures on the June long weekend and an abbreviated sudden death semi- final, DP1 and DP2 played three rounds of fixtures during the season, with teams in DP3-DP5 playing two rounds of fixtures. The late withdrawal of a team and the inclusion of a new team in a different division meant a hurried rearrangement of the draw in the week leading up to the first fixture round.

Each of the divisions had clearly defined top five teams, with only DP5 in doubt until the final round. Every team won at least one game during the season, with one team in DP1 winning every game. Wet weather disrupted fixtures on only one occasion resulting in Sunday morning fixtures. Other problems arose from the installation of irrigation to fields 10, 11 and 12 and the subsequent top dressing of those fields leaving them like sandpits, which necessitated the use of Rasey Park for senior fixtures over three weekends.

Thanks to the fixtures and grading committee of Di Young, Judy Hartnett and Lesley Bennett for their tireless work during the season.

Lesley Bennett Competitions – Fixtures & Grading COMPETITION: OPERATIONS UMPIRES Umpires - It was another big year for BWHA umpires. Thank you to our Turf and Grass umpire stewards Sonya Fisher and Judy Hartnett who did a tremendous job with the umpire allocations. With 25 turf games each fixture weekend and 23 grass games it was a huge task to find umpires for the 18 weeks of fixtures, plus finals. Without umpires there wouldn’t be any games. Thank you to all umpires for giving their time to ensure the fixtures can go ahead. The annual rules paper was again held in May, the aim of which is to improve players’ knowledge of the rules. As this is an open book test players should take the opportunity to sit in groups to discuss and complete the paper.

This year Jan Hadfield conducted 2 rules talks for turf umpires and Rachel Ardern and Australian umpire Bernie Pangrazio delivered rules talks for grass umpires. These sessions are always entertaining and informative, where the rules are explained using practical demonstrations. All clubs were invited to send along the coach and captain of each team and umpires from the club. A new rules cycle began this year with implementation for the 2013 and 2014 season. The major change was to the method of determining a winner in finals – from the traditional penalty stroke competition to a shootout competition - a one on one between the goalie and an attacker, lasting 8 seconds. This provided great entertainment at finals.

BWHA continued with automatic 2 min green and 5 min yellow card suspensions throughout all senior games including those at Downey Park.

21 2013 BWHA Annual Report

Every year BWHA sends umpires to State Championships and again it was a struggle to find umpires to attend the Opens, Masters and U18 weekends, and the longer U15 and U13 tournaments with fewer umpires nominating. This year the Southern Cross competition reverted to just one Sunday for each age group which relieved the pressure for locating umpires prepared to give up another day of their valuable time. Congratulations to all umpires who were successful in attaining a HockeyEd practical assessment or an upgrade of an existing qualification.

Technical - BWHA again this year had paid qualified technical staff on Turf games instead of rostering clubs each week. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful job of keeping the games running efficiently and on time.

The U&TC, which consisted of Ronda Nix OAM, Lesley Bennett, Cheryl Kann, Lyn Thomas, Christina Nipperess-Sims, Judy Hartnett, Kayleen Smith and Caroline Schomberg, met regularly throughout the season. Thank you for volunteering your time.

35+ Masters - As all games need to be concluded by 10pm on Monday nights, the teams again had to cope with a shorter interval at half time. With 5 minutes between games the umpires and technical volunteers could complete the formalities of the game and still be ready to take the field for the next game. With the implementation of a new database provider, which made it impossible to load the correct times on the database draw, the teams are to be congratulated for coping with the two sets of draws – one on the database and the other under umpire allocation.

The competition each year continues to improve, with MM Div 1 of a very high standard. This year with 6 teams in both MM1 and MM2 and 9 teams in MM3 the Masters Fixtures Committee decided to run each division at separate venues and to rotate through the 4 venues. The advantage of this was that umpires were only umpiring their own division. The disadvantage was it was no longer possible to run club nights so there was no interaction between the three divisions. With MM1 and MM2 players playing 20 games during the season and MM3 playing only 16, a round robin series between the last 4 teams was planned to provide a similar number of games, but was not a popular move.

Thank you to all Masters Players for continuing to provide a wonderful competition for players 35 years and over.

UMPIRES PORTFOLIO REPORT TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT In 2013, over 228 umpires were used across the five turf divisions with 7 umpires doing more than 13 games in the season (what a great contribution). The “regular” umpires are critical to the success of the season. These are a special bunch of people who add a huge level of experience and skill to the competition. They are generally also mentoring, undertaking representative duties (both as umpires and as umpire coaches / managers) and doing their own “work and family” stuff – so their contributions cannot be overstated.

22 2013 BWHA Annual Report

A special thanks also to the umpires who said “yes” when I rang and asked for assistance in covering an allocation – in particular to Bernadette Pangrazio, Lyn Hill and Rachel Ardern. Often my call was on the day or the night before I needed to find a replacement umpire and I am pleased to say that when I knew about it, no game was started without 2 umpires. This year was again difficult as the trend continued for players to either be unwilling to umpire or to put such tight conditions around their availability that it was almost impossible to allocate them. Part of BWHA’s response to this is the creation of an “Umpire Officer” part-time role within the BWHA office. This person will provide assistance to the Umpiring & Technical Committee, the Grass and Turf Umpire Stewards and to Clubs if they want BWHA to assist with running umpiring clinics or mentoring. Finally, after a number of years of doing this role (I think it is about 10!) I will not be continuing in 2014. As we try to make Hockey Zone more commercial so that it covers more of its costs, I have been asked to focus on it as in 2013 I tried to do both and it was pretty hard. So please ensure that you assist whoever takes on this role as we will continue to need willing and capable umpires to ensure that our competition develops and is the best that it can be. Sonya Fisher Turf Umpire Steward GRASS UMPIRES STEWARD’S REPORT Club Grass Umpire Co-ordinators - developed a club grass umpire contact list based on who had sent in the umpire register at the start of the season. I found this an invaluable way to work though difficulties that arose throughout the year that were specific to a particular club. Allocating DP1 umpires this year - Having one club with two teams in DP1 meant that the allocations for this division were more difficult. The general umpire allocation formula requires clubs to provide umpires capable of umpiring the division for each of the teams they have registered. The club with two teams in DP1 therefore should have supplied 2 DP 1 umpires each week. It was often impossible to allocate this as the two teams most often playing in different time slots and because the club cannot umpire their own teams there was often nowhere to place these umpires other than in DP2. I would like to thank clubs who did not have DP1 teams but on their umpire register listed umpires capable of officiating on a DP1 game. I was able to juggle the allocations and ensure DP1 had suitable umpires. Involvement of non-playing volunteer umpires - In the second half of the season a junior player, who wanted to extend her umpiring experience, volunteered to umpire a game each week at Downey Park. I was able to utilise the junior on DP1 games and this relieved the difficulty of allocations to this division which occurred for reasons mentioned above. I would encourage clubs to consider senior grass umpiring as a potential development opportunity for suitable junior umpires. This could be utilised in any of the grass divisions.

23 2013 BWHA Annual Report

Importance of umpire registers - I use the umpire register that clubs provide at the start of the season for all allocations. Decisions about which division to allocate to particular people, their availability, their playing division etc. are all sourced from this document for the whole of the season. During the season it is inevitable that circumstances for some people listed on this register will change. For example, an injury can mean a particular umpire is not available. Clubs need to realise that they should provide a new register or at least communicate with BWHA so as to ensure grass umpire allocations can be made with the up to date information. I have suggested some modifications to the grass umpire register form to include a club contact person and email address for communication in relation to umpire allocations during the season. I have also proposed another column where clubs can add notes e.g. prefers to umpire before playing. I would find this sort of information helpful when doing allocations. While there would be no promises that all conditions can be fulfilled knowing allows me the option to allocate according to this information. During this year I developed a knowledge of these things, particularly in regard to regular umpires and tried where possible to make the allocations as suitable as I could. This year the umpire register was due to BWHA 2 weeks before the season started and just before Easter. Many clubs were late submitting their registers which put pressure on me to allocate the first couple of weeks of umpires with no information from some clubs. I would like to see this register due maybe a week earlier to allow time to chase clubs who are slow to submit or better still if clubs could send this document in by the due date this job would be easier. Judy Hartnett Grass Umpire Steward COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT) This year the role of grass match secretary was much easier as we spent last year reminding clubs, managers and players of the rules in the Operations Manual. There were very few problems with grass registrations this year and clubs are to be congratulated on their efforts to register players and complete match sheets correctly. Christine Blanchard Match Secretary – Senior Grass

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO) As the 2013 season has come to an exciting end, there were many wonderful programs, games, training sessions and events to reflect back on that have made 2013 a wonderful year. The U7 & U9 “Rookey” Competition was again a success at Rasey Park, everyone enjoyed Skills Day and with so many QLD U18 & U21 Players attending as Guest Coaches they brought so much excitement to the day. Thanks to Anna Mehonoshen (Co-ordinator) & Atherli Cross (First Aid) who once again teamed up to keep everyone organised, on time and safe at Rasey Park. Thanks must once again go to the many volunteers from all of BWHA’s clubs, the Coaches, Managers, and those who assisted on their BBQ Roster duty, once again it was a delight for all to grab a great coffee from Mr Doppio and a Bacon & Egg muffin and watch an exciting game of hockey with family and friends.

24 2013 BWHA Annual Report

This year’s U11 Program kicked off with development training in May. Players then braved some very cold & wet conditions for selection trials. Congratulations to the players who were selected in teams to play in the U11 Southern Cross Tournament. All 4 of our U11 Brisbane teams did extremely well, winning all 3 divisions. It was great to have some new and exciting Coaches and Officials on board this year and I look forward to a very bright future for our youngest representative players and more success for the Coaches. Congratulations to the players selected to represent Brisbane at the U13 State Championships in Mackay, U15 State Championships in Ipswich & U18 State Championships in Cairns. The finals for U13 State Champions for both Divisions 1 & 2 came down to shootouts where both the Brisbane U13/1 & U13/3 teams were feeling very excited and nervous, unfortunately both divisions resulted in Brisbane being named runners up for 2013. Congratulations to the players in Brisbane U18/1 who were placed 1st and named State Champions, the final was a very exciting match to watch, again the result came down to shootouts. I would like to encourage players to continue to nominate and trial for Brisbane representative teams to gain further valuable experiences and to maximise development opportunities available to them. Congratulations to our Brisbane players who have been selected in State Squads & Teams & School Sport State Teams, you continue to inspire players of all ages. BWHA has continued its strong presence within the community in 2013, participating in over 31 Active After School Care Hockey programs in schools across Brisbane. Thank you to our dedicated coaches who continue to run these programs. BWHA is very proud of the high standard of coaching and enthusiasm you continue to provide. Keep an eye out for BWHA running an “Active Parks” Brisbane City Council event in your clubs local area over the next few months leading up to sign on in 2014. I would like to thank BWHA for the support given to me in my role of RDO, to the wonderful staff for their ongoing encouragement & support Sue, Sharyn & Kath and I welcome Lisa to our team. As the season has come to a close so it is also time to farewell Sharyn Simpson; BWHA’s very dedicated and passionate Coaching Director. Sharyn has been a fabulous role model, leader, motivator and inspiration, it has been a great honour to work with Sharyn over the past 6 years, as she is a highly valued icon in the Qld hockey community, a true hockey hero, I will dearly miss her but do wish her the best of luck for the new and exciting challenges ahead of her and her family. I look forward to the new growth and implementing an exciting strategic plan for the next stage of Hockey in Brisbane. Thanks to the dedicated members of the Junior Committee your valued assistance particularly during the U11 Southern Cross, Junior Development programs and support of the U7/U9 Rookey skills day and end of season competition was invaluable. To the many volunteers who do so much towards all things that make up a hockey season/club/team, I congratulate you on a job well done and wish you all a safe and happy Christmas holiday season and look forward to a very exciting 2014 season. • Brisbane 1 – tie 3rd Div 1 • Brisbane 2 – 2nd Div 1 • Brisbane 3 – 4th Div 2 • Brisbane 4 – winner Div 3 • Brisbane 5 – 2nd Div 4 • Brisbane 6 – 3rd Div 5

With approximately 120 nominations it was a busy time for the selectors with two trials held and grass and turf teams to watch. Four selectors was probably too few and five at least are needed. Thanks go to Sandra Beirne, Jenny Heron and Janene McCall for their dedication in this task.

Overall 86 players were selected for Brisbane. There were 14 players selected for each of the first 4 teams, and 15 players for each of the last 2 teams. Therefore, 30-34 players were left out, yet all players were found positions with other centres.

Thanks once again to Sue Barsby and all the staff at BWHA for their help with the Masters process and as always I am grateful for being able to be part of this.

TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT Tours – another good year with Southern Cross & Championships wins. We took out the following Championships: U18 Division 1, Opens, Super League and Masters Division 3. Our U11 Southern Cross Brisbane 1, 2 & 4 teams took out all 3 Divisions. Congratulations to all Coaches, Managers & Players. Thank you to all Selectors who volunteered this year – it is a very time consuming job and often thankless but all players have equal opportunity to be seen. All Brisbane teams represented us well to the best of their abilities and this experience will only assist them in the future. Thank you to all Coaches, Managers and Umpires for your time you put into each team and in achieving the best possible results. Congratulations to all players who made Qld teams, who made Shadows and who were Talent Identified. Next year’s Championships are in: U13 Gladstone (4 teams) U15 Rockhampton (4 teams) U18 Ipswich - TBC (3 teams) Masters Maryborough (6 teams) Super League Brisbane (1 team) Opens Gold Coast (2 teams)

Apparel - sales were strong with all age groups buying a variety of apparel. Unfortunately I had to order large amounts of most items so there is still a fair amount of stock still on hand. However this will be sold next year and only small apparel orders will be required early at the start of next year. Thank you to Rhonda Bentley, Jenny Tidey & Maria Mijts and all the team managers who assisted with the uniform allocations and “safe” return during this year. Sue Barsby Development Administration FACILITY AND DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT This season has been successful in that we have achieved some long standing goals. The most important success has been in developing a Memorandum of Understanding with Brisbane Softball. The new executive and staff are very keen to have a good working relationship with BWHA, as we are, so we can work together to improve playing conditions for both sports at Downey Park. We had another flood in January with the usual clean up and lost equipment to be replaced. BWHA has received some State Government funding to help us flood proof our buildings. To this end management has funded and approved a shed to be used as a workshop and storage for all the grounds equipment. We have applied to BCC to build it on the one small piece of land we have in the car park. As yet we have no approval. We live in hope. BCC plan to remediate fields 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 & 9 in the near future. This will necessitate extra use of fields 10, 11 & 12. To enable this to happen we received a grant to lay irrigation on said fields. This has required extra work as the trenches have continually subsided but it will be excellent to be able to water the fields to keep them in good condition. A special thank you to Chris Blanchard who convinced BCC to spray the bindi infestation. For many years our bar in the clubhouse has been run and organised by Denise Byrne. Unfortunately she has decided to retire from the post. Not that she is a retiring person, she just wants Saturdays back. We will miss you Denise. With the loss of Denise and our canteen convenor we are in a spot of difficulty as these provide BWHA with a good income stream. It is vital that we have two people who will commit to the jobs for a whole season and hopefully into the future. Are there any Mums/Dads/Grandmas/Grandpas who are looking for a part time job out there? If so please contact the office. We need you! My thanks go to Noala Gordon who continues to do many extra hours every week and John Robinson who is always cheerful no matter what happens. BWHA is very lucky to have two such dedicated and loyal people working on the fields. The improvement of the fields is obvious to all. Meg Brodie Facility and Development

ARCHIVES REPORT

This year the archives committee worked very hard to finally store BWHA records in an area that is under lock and key. Since getting all the items numbered and catalogued, some items have “gone missing” and hopefully we will not lose any more now that they are “secure”. One item in particular was removed from one of the club room display cabinets. It is a hockey stick with the number 140 on it and was used in the early years of hockey 30/40/50’s. Its return would be very much appreciated. As always we are still trying to identify personnel in a lot of the photographs we have, and to this end we have been sending out some of these books to ex-players with that hope in mind. The books are also out for perusal at special events and if anyone thinks they could help we are more than willing to pass the books around. Archives, as you know will never end so that the work in receiving new items will always have to be attended to. In this light hopefully some younger members of hockey will take over this role. The committee is open to receiving new members and at any time to pass on information.

JUNIOR CHAIR

2013 saw the season begin with a new structure to the Junior Committee with Debbie Wark, our 2012 Chair, making the decision to be the Liaison between the Junior Committee and the Management Committee. Members on the Junior Committee held portfolios, as they had in the past, but the traditional top-down structure changed. The year went by incredibly quickly, with only a few challenges, luckily, weather not being one of them this year! I would like to thank the members of the Junior Committee Sue Carey, Helen Hill, Kristin Muir, Kelli Robinson, Helen Hart and Sue Speight for their time and commitment to the junior competition. Thank you to all the clubs for taking their turn with the weekly BBQ roster at Rasey Park. The contribution by all clubs certainly lightens the work load and provides a service to all. A very big thank you to John Robinson, Noala Gordon and the Grounds Committee for all their hard work on the fields. The fields looked amazing this year – we even had “technical areas” marked on each field for our U11 Southern Cross carnival. We continued to trial new things this year with our J competition and also our grass competition. It’s important to hear constructive feedback from clubs about these competitions and how things work. Our aim was to be all inclusive and to ensure that all clubs have the same opportunity. We saw an exciting new venture of our JT1 competition being filmed and aired on TV4ME and clips on You Tube. This initiative by Hockey Zone (BWHA/BHA) and supported by Powell Industrial (Adrian and Lorraine Pembroke) was hugely successful. A very big thank you must go to Adrian and Lorraine for their support for the JT1 competition. Thank you to our weekly support crew:- • The BWHA office staff • Representative Selectors, Coaches and Managers • Charli Hawson, who is always a pleasure to work with in the office on Saturday • Camille Collins, our very efficient control room girl • John Thomas, Atherli Cross and our DP sports trainers • Canteen Staff at Rasey & Downey Parks • Anna Mehonoshen, our U7 & U9 co-ordinator • Turf Tech Officials and umpire mentors Our U11 Southern Cross was once again run with the boys U11 Coulter Shield and as in the past, it was a fantastic day. Our Junior Committee will move on this year and we hope that another group of dedicated people will move in to take over the very important role of running the Junior Competition. I would, on behalf of the Junior Committee, like to thank the many volunteers who have helped us during our time on the Committee. Last, but not least, we would like to thank Debbie Wark for her continued support and guidance in all matters Junior this year. Debbie’s passion for hockey and people is one of BWHA’s assets! JUNIOR COMPETITIONS REPORT This year we had 103 teams playing in the BWHA competition. 35 Turf teams from 14 clubs and 68 Grass teams from 17 Clubs. An increase of 6 grass teams from 2012, which shows that the sport is growing. The grading committee this year was Margie Brown, Sue Barsby and Sue Carey with Helen Hart from the Junior committee. Once again it was difficult job as we try to accommodate all teams from the paper work that is submitted but due to changes in the paperwork this year we had more insight to each of the teams which was beneficial. TURF Once again this year we tried to keep as many teams on turf. From the 37 teams nominated we were able to retain 35 teams in the competition. Due to the turf availability the Grading Committee decided to allocate 9 teams per J turf division and 8 teams in 13T competition. A 9 team competition does make it difficult for fixtures but we were trying to get as many teams on turf that was possible. The grading games started at split venues, which was not ideal but after reviewing clubs registrations and grading games. We managed to keep as many teams on turf as possible with the venues available. This is not an easy task and it is so important for clubs to come ready for grading games. Once again this year we played 30 minute grading games. Starting on the 22nd February and then again on 1st March, with fixtures commencing on the 15th March. With having 9 teams in each of the J divisions we were able to keep another 3 teams in the competition, only losing 2 teams from the turf competition and both teams continued at Downey Park. For 2013 it was decided to keep the 13T an 8 team competition, as we felt that bringing 13T division back to Downey Park, to play on Field 1 for one game a week would allow for as many teams to participate in the 13T competition. GRASS Fixtures started 13th April, but this was rained out, so made our job more difficult to grade teams. School holidays always have an impact on the junior fixtures but we need to start otherwise we don’t get in the all the rounds required. This year we had 17 teams in the JG competition, with 2 divisions, which was 1 team more than 2012. Once again clubs requested particular timeslots for this grade as they would not be able to field the teams, which we tried to accommodate, it is so important for junior girls to stay in sport. The Under 13 grass competition had 24 teams nominate which was 4 more than 2012, which is great so we were able to have 3 divisions of 8 teams. 27 teams nominated for Under 11 and which allowed for 4 divisions in the grade but 3 teams less than in 2012. Once the teams were in the appropriate grades, the season settled and all seemed to enjoy their hockey.

53 2013 BWHA Annual Report

Overall, the season was successful, the JT teams played more turf games then in the previous years, this year we had more details on the paperwork that helped with grading. Downey Park was still abuzz on a Saturday morning. Things to improve on would be allowing more time for turf grading games instead of trying to fit it into a Friday night when everybody is still doing their summer sports and for grading games to be at the same venue. And we do the best we can with the grass teams grading, considering the elements and school holidays. The main thing is for clubs to complete appropriate paperwork and for them to communicate with the office if there is an issue. Thanks to the grading committee for their hard work Friday nights and Saturday mornings to ensure a strong competition across the grades. Thanks to the BWHA office staff for their help during the year. Congratulations to those clubs that won premierships. Helen Hart Junior Committee - Competitions

JUNIOR MATCH SECRETARY REPORT

2013 has been quite a challenging year with regard to recording and reporting for the junior competition. The implementation of the new database and the requirement for ALL players (returning and new) to submit BWHA registration forms caused some confusion and a large increase in the workload for the position of Match Secretary at the start of the season. Fortunately most clubs addressed the majority of issues promptly, but next year there may need to be more clarity between requests for database paperwork and paperwork requested from the Match Secretary. 2014 should see an improvement in this area as the returning players will not have to submit any paperwork which will reduce the workload enormously. Thanks to the assistance given from the staff in the office especially, Leah, Lisa and Regie. Efficient communication between the office and the club Secretaries helped things run smoothly. Thank you also to Zoe Goodwin for her assistance. Helen Hill Junior Committee - Match Secretary

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT This was quite a successful year for junior umpiring. Umpiring numbers have appeared to increase. This is a very encouraging sign. There were many new umpires. We also had our more experienced umpires becoming club mentors, which proved beneficial to our new and aspiring umpires. I would like to thank all the volunteers, those who turned up each week to umpire, mentor, toured with our representative teams to the Southern Cross Tournaments and State Championships and also the ladies that came to be assessed at U11 Southern Cross. Thanks also to Pam Nitarski who assisted with allocating the umpires at the U11 Southern Cross & Coulter Shield tournament this year. Without all of you our game of hockey would not exist. Kelli Robinson and Kristin Muir Junior Committee – Umpire Conveners

54 2013 BWHA Annual Report

U7 & U9s REPORT The Under 7 and Under 9 Rookey Competition grew substantially in 2013 with 22 Under 7 teams and 25 Under 9 teams allocated into six divisions. The 2013 season demonstrated the increase of participation and development in our junior hockey A major highlight of the season was skills day, which was held on June15th. This is always an anticipated event for the children, and to add to the excitement, this year skills day Rookey participants were able to get to know many of the QLD U18Women’s team who helped out as guest coaches, assisting with the skill stations spread across Rasey Park. This day was not only rewarding for our youngest athletes but also fulfilling for the coaches and families supporting. Thank you to Anna Mehonoshen (U7/U9 Coordinator) and Atherli Cross (Sports Trainer) who once again assisted in ensuring an organised and safe season. Their commitment and experience in these roles is greatly appreciated by BWHA. Thanks to the Junior Committee members who were also present at Rasey Park each week, it was great to have this extra assistance, as Saturday mornings are always a big event! A huge thank you to all the club volunteers who assisted with equipment each week and performed their duty roster on the BBQ. Volunteers are essential in the running of BWHA and the revenue from the BBQ supports in maintenance and replacement or purchase of equipment at Rasey Park. Thanks also to the canteen staff at Rasey Park who are always willing to offer a helping hand. The Competition finished on a high with our “End of Season Carnival”. The carnival provides many of the U7 players an opportunity to play a game in an U9 team, to prepare for subbing up or playing in the next division. The carnival continues to be a great way to introduce new players and siblings that may be interested in playing next season. We would like to wish everyone a safe and very happy Christmas and look forward to an exciting 2014 Rookey season. Regie Fisher BWHA RDO
