Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time “The early Christian community celebrated the Eucharist for fear of the existing persecution by the Roman Em-pire. In this context, today’s liturgical texts speak of God’s protection for those who serve him in spite of the dangers that they may face. In the Gospel, Jesus af-firms the choices people make out of their free will, but warns that one cannot serve God and money at the same time. The true stewards of the Lord must be faith-ful to the tasks God has placed before them, and God will never abandon them. This theme echoes the words of Isaiah in today’s first reading. God will never forget his people, as a mother never forgets her child. This marvelous image helps us recognize the depth of the Father’s love for each of us through his only son, Jesus Christ…”

Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario “La comunidad de los primeros cristianos, aparte de vivir medio escondida para celebrar la Eucaristía por las persecuciones del Imperio, compartía todo en común; de ahí que los textos de la liturgia de hoy revelan la protección de Dios para aquellos que le sirven, ante las inseguridades del mundo en que se desenvuelven. Jesús respeta la libertad humana, pero afirma que no se puede servir a Dios y al dinero a la vez. El verdadero administrador del Señor debe ser fiel a los que Dios ha puesto a su cargo y colocar su misión en las manos de Aquel que nunca lo abandonará. Este mensaje venía ya del profets Isaías quien, en la primera lectura, destaca que Dios nunca se olvida de su pueblo, como una madre no se olvida de sus hijos. THE SEASON OF LENT The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the cele-bration of Christian initiation; and also the faithful who recall their baptism and do penance in preparing for Easter. (General Norms for the Liturgical Year #27).

By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving, and pray-er, the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe individual days of penance is not considered serious, but failure to ob-serve any penitential days at all or a substantial number of them must be considered serious.

LENT IS RENEWAL TIME FOR OUR BODIES

Abstinence: No meat or meat by-products

All Catholics 14 years and older

Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays of Lent Fasting: one full meatless meal, 2 lighter meals, nothing in between

All Catholics 18-59

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (PLEASE NOTE: When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, these regulations of fast and abstinence do not oblige, but we should not excuse ourselves from these penitential practices with-out sufficient reason.)

LENT IS RENEWAL TIME FOR SHARING

Operation Rice Bowl: one meal per week, simple food, and the money from our sacrifices put into the rice bowl and brought to Mass on Holy Thursday; money used to buy food for the hungry Food Pantry: each week bring a can of food to Mass to share with the hungry

Atravéz de la disciplina de absténencia, obras de caridad y oración, la Iglesia guarda la Cuaresma desde el Miér-coles de Ceniza hasta la Misa Vespertina de la Cena del Señor el Jueves Santo. Todos los fieles y catecúmenos deben llevar sériamente estas prácticas. El no observar algunos días de penitencia no se considera algo serio, pero el no observar ninguno de los días de penitencia se consid-era serio.
