A successful, interesting and pleasurable time was had by all - and for the pets? Well, the highlight of the day for them, had to be the contents of the goodie bags, and knowing that their health is in very good hands!

Sin embargo, el pasado sábado 24 de julio, Carolina y sus empleados cambiaron sus batas por ropa de fiesta para celebrar laapertura del nuevo local en Torre del Mar, con una inauguración sólo para clientes, amigos y familia. Esta nueva clínica merece esta celebración ya que Carolina- dueña de mismo-, ha trabajado duramente durante los últimos quince años constantemente haciendo mejoras en sus servicios para ofrecer la mejor atención y cuidados a los animales. El día que se abrieron las puertas de la clínica, la actividad fue la misma de todos los días. En medio de una operación de emergencia a un perro gravemente herido, se mostró a algunos clientes el proceso de la operación. Desde mayo de este año, las mascotas

A serving of paella, wine and dancing, are not usually what

you would expect to find at a veterinary clinic. However, on Saturday 24th July, Carolina and her staff at Clinica Veterinaria Axarquia, exchanged vet scrubs for party wear, to mark the opening of their brand new premises in Torre Del Mar, with a special open day and evening fiesta for pet owners, friends and family. This new clinic really was something to celebrate, as Carolina has worked extremely hard over the past fifteen years, constantly upgrading her facilities and services, to provide first class veterinary care for pets. As the doors opened on the morning of this festive day, it was business as usual. In the midst of an emergency operation for a seriously injured dog, regular consultations and clients to attend to, they gave ‘behind the scenes’ tours for visitors, who were able to observe this very important veterinary care in action. Since May this year, pets and their owners have been able to benefit from these brand new modern, spacious and outstanding facilities. When visiting the vet, we usually only get to see the consultation room, but on the open day, the in-house laboratory, prep room, fully equipped operating theatre, recovery wards, and the latest digital x-ray and ultrasound equipment plus the very popular grooming parlour, were all available for viewing. The evening saw the celebrations continue and as the sun went

Cuando visitamos al veterinario, normalmente vemos sólo la consulta, pero el día de la apertura se pudieron visitar todos los departamentos de la misma, tales como; la sala de consulta, el laboratorio, el quirófano, la sala de rehabilitación, la sala de rayos-X de última generación y la sala de estar. La noche llegó y la fiesta continuó acompañada de buena comida, buena bebida y muy buen ambiente mientras la visita a todos los departamentos de la clínica continuó para goce de las personas que asistieron al acto. Una agradable, interesante y exitosa velada transcurrió esa noche, mientras las mascotas pudieron degustar sus golosinas y el hecho de saber que en el futuro su salud estará en buenas manos.

El mercado de los martes en el Trapiche, se mantiene con fuerza, aunque los rumores indiquen lo contrario.

Hay muchos rumores sobre inspectores descontentos que están cerrando puestos y retirando mercancías, de los cuales todos son exagerados. Como práctica normal aquí en España, todos los mercados y tenderos se someten a inspecciones del ayuntamiento local regularmente, para asegurar que todas las licencias están en orden y que todas las normas de sanidad y seguridad de cualquier mercado se están cumpliendo fi elmente, como viene a ser el caso del mercado del Trapiche. Como nota personal, he visitado el mercado en muchas ocasiones y por lo que he visto, siempre trabajan de forma muy profesional. El Mercadillo de Trapiche cuenta con un amplio aparcamiento gratuito con espacio para multitud de vehículos y la entrada al mercadillo también es gratuita. Dentro hay un gran variedad de puestos que descubrir y cuándo caminar, charlar y comprar se hace un poco pesado, hay zonas de sombra dónde tomar un café, una cerveza y algo de comer del bar. El interior está equipado con aire acondicionado. Si aún no has visitado el mercadillo del Trapiche, te recomiendo que lo hagas, ya que realmente es una buena manera de pasar unas horas el martes por la mañana. Nos vemos allí

The Tuesday market at Trapiche continues to go from strength to strength, despite rumours to the contrary.

There are stories abound of unhappy market inspectors closing stalls and removing stock...all of which are greatly exaggerated. As is common practice here in Spain, all markets and stall holders receive regular inspections from the local ayuntamiento to ensure that all operational licences are in place and the usual health and safety rules and regulations for a busy market are being adhered to, which is certainly the case at the Trapiche Market.On a personal note, I have visited the market on many ocasions and I have always found it to be a very professionally run business.The Market itself boasts a large free car park with room for hundreds of cars. Entrance to the market is also free. Once inside there is a real variety of stalls to browse around and when the walking, talking and shopping gets too much, there are shaded areas with facilities for tea and coffee from the bar area along with wines, beers and hot food snacks. The large interior section is fully air conditioned. If you have not yet visited the Trapiche Market, I would encourage you to do so, it really is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours on a Tuesday morning. See you there!

The restaurant La Pataleta reopened on the1st June in Torrox Costa. Proprietors Michael Moss and Brian

Hjort say the cosy restaurant has a lot to offer when it comes to atmosphere and good quality food. At La Pataleta you can get international dishes, tapas with a Danish twist and open Danish sandwiches. “We have chosen to have an international menu, but we think it is important to hold on to our Danish heritage. And it turns out that especially the Spanish love our Danish meatballs and potato salad, Parisian steak and tapas” says Brian. However, Michael and Brian point out that, La Pataleta is as much a café and bar as a restaurant, where the guests can enjoy a coffee or drink and enjoy the view and cozy atmosphere. La Pataleta also has an attractive large covered beachside terrace. Once a month the restaurant makes a barbecue buffet, where various international musicians entertain with live music. Private parties are catered for and there is free WIFI during opening hours.

Nearly five million people have been displaced from the worst flooding ever recorded in Pakistan.

Hundreds of thousands are being housed in orderly tented camps set up in army compounds, schools and other public buildings, but thousands more are living on roadsides and canal embankments, spreading out mats under the trees or making shade over the simple rope beds they brought with them. The town of Sukkur is overflowing with the influx of displaced people. On the edge of the town, a group of 15 families with scores of children are camped along the Dadu Canal. Their mood is nervous, edgy, and they race in a horde after any vehicle that slows down in the hope it bears food or assistance. Shad Mohammad, 28, a shopkeeper and father of five, who came to Sakhur after his town of Ghospur was completely flooded said “sometimes people come, sometimes the government comes, or charities with food, sometimes you get something, sometimes not. He continued, “the children are often hungry and crying, we don’t know what will happen to us, we have lost everything. The coastal area of Torrox stretches for 3 kms and at the heart of the resort is the Paseo Maritimo a

fl at pedestrianised promenade. First impressions of Torrox Costa could lead you to believe that here is just another strip of Spanish coastline yielding to tower-block tourism. Closer inspection however will prove something else. The fact is that all the apartment blocks house private apartments most of which are owned either by Spanish or German nationals and it wasn’t until June 2003 that the fi rst tourist hotel was opened here. What this means is that until now, despite the availability of plenty of accommodation Torrox Costa has been vastly undersold. Exposure has been limited to ‘word of mouth’ recommendations and in truth the whole resort has been kept out of the mainstream holiday brochures. The result being that outside of the peak months of July and August the resort has a very easy-going, calm feel to it.Starting at El Faro or the lighthouse, the promenade runs west along the entire length

of the main beach, Playa Ferrara, Most of Torrox’s shops, bars and restaurants are to be found either along the Paseo Maritimo or in amongst the apartment buildings that stretch back to the main coast road.To the east of El Faro is the less developed side of Torrox Costa. The general facilities here are not as good perhaps as those to the west of El Faro but this stretch of coast has an appeal of its own. Here the beaches are more rugged and natural where it is still possible to pull your car off the road and park virtually on the beach. Either side of El Faro there are also some excellent chiringuitos and lovely sandy beaches to enjoy. Torrox has, arguably, as many good quality restaurants than any other village or town east of Malaga. This combined with a vast selection of coffee bars, ice cream parlours, tapas bars, snack bars and just bars makes Torrox Costa a great place to visit for a day at the beach, lunch with friends or for a great night out.

La zona costera de Torrox se extiende por 3 kilómetros y el corazón del centro turístico es el Paseo Marítimo, un paseo marítimo peatonal plano.

La primera impresión de Torrox Costa podría llevarle a creer que esto sólo es otra franja de litoral español cediendo al turismo de bloques de apartamentos. Sin embargo, una inspección más detallada le demostrará algo más. El hecho es que todas las casas de los bloques de apartamentos privados en su mayoría son propiedad ya españoles o alemanes y no fue hasta junio de 2003 que se inauguró el primer hotel de turistas aquí. Lo que signifi ca que, hasta ahora, a pesar de la disponibilidad de muchos alojamientos, Torrox Costa ha sido vendido infi nitamente más barato. La publicidad se ha limitado a las recomendaciones “boca a boca” y en realidad todo el destino turístico se ha mantenido fuera de los folletos de vacaciones en general. El resultado es que, fuera de los meses de apogeo de Julio y Agosto, el destino turístico es muy tranquilo, se nota mucha calma. Partiendo de El Faro, el paseo marítimo va hacia el oeste por toda la longitud de la playa principal, Playa Ferrara. La mayoría de tiendas de Torrox, bares y restaurantes se encuentran bien a lo largo del Paseo Marítimo o entre los edifi cios de apartamentos que llegan a la carretera principal de la costa.Al este de El Faro está la parte menos desarrollada de Torrox Costa. Las instalaciones en general aquí no son tan buenas quizás como estas al oeste de El Faro, pero este tramo de costa tiene un atractivo propio. Aquí las playas son más escarpadas y naturales, donde todavía es posible acercar su coche desde la carretera y aparcar casi en la playa. Un poco más abajo de El Faro también hay algunos chiringuitos excelentes y hermosas playas de arena para disfrutar. Torrox tiene, posiblemente, restaurantes más fi nos que cualquier otro pueblo o ciudad al este de Málaga. Esto, combinado con una amplia selección de cafeterías, heladerías, bares de tapas, y bares de aperitivos, hace de Torrox un gran lugar para visitar al salir de noche.

que ha abierto sus puertas recientemente en Nerja. Se encuentra conectado al Hotel Marinas de Nerja en las afueras de Nerja en la nacional 340, a unos dos kms del centro del pueblo. Lo encontrará, entrando en el Hotel, yendo a la izquierda y podrá asimismo aparcar con facilidad en el exterior.Descubrirá que éste es un sitio muy especial cuando vea la decoración que exhibe este establecimiento, con sus sofás de cuero, su lujoso cocktail bar, y un ambiente acogedor en el que inmediatamente se sentirá integrado. La zona del restaurante principal está bajando unas escaleras de mármol desde la zona del bar.Este lugar invita a pensar que uno se encuentra con el encanto de la atmósfera que se podría respirar en una película holliwoodense, y ni que decir tiene que el personal es encantador y le hará sentirse estupendamente.La cocina es excelente y muchas de las recetas guardan un sabor y un estilo únicos que están en consonancia con sus muy razonables precios. Ésta es una gran

Parece que Simona y Tina han creado un establecimiento perfecto para ocasiones especiales y yo les recomiendo encarecidamente que lo visiten tan pronto como les sea posible aunque no olviden primero hacer la reserva .

My own first impressions of the glamourous dining area, with it’s very distinctive white theme, was one of a Hollywood movie set, but the staff are very friendly and welcoming creating a very nice ambience in which to dine and enjoy yourselves.The cuisine is excellent and very much in keeping with the stylish environment, and what is more, the prices offer very good value for money. This is great cuisine in a fabulous location with attention to detail evident in every aspect. It seems that owners Simona and Tina have created an establishment which is perfect for special ocasions whilst remaining ideal for absolutley no ocasion. I strongly recommend that you visit as soon as possible...but do make a reservation first.

Los viticultores de vino rosado de Francia, España e Italia han ganado su

batalla para mantener el modo de producción tradicional, e impedir que el rosado se elabore a partir de la mezcla de vino blanco con algo de tinto, y embotellarlo y etiquetarlo legalmente bajo la denominación de vino rosado. Al principio de este año, gracias al esfuerzo colectivo de la Conseil Interprofessionel des Vins de Provence (Consejo Interprofesional de Vinos de Provenza), se pudo lograr esta victoria.Según fuentes de información de la Unión de Prensa Internacional (UPI), la Comisión Europea se retractó de su propuesta de permitir esta mezcla de vinos, al escuchar las presiones de las tres principales naciones productoras de vino rosado. “Es importante que oigamos a nuestros productores cuando están preocupados por los cambios en nuestra regulación”, dijo la Comisionada Agrícola Europea, Mariann Fischer Boel.

A Alemania le gusta autodefinirse como “El Mundo de las Ideas”. A lo largo de la historia lo han demostrado, ciertamente. Fueron los

inventores de la aspirina, el zeppelín, la imprenta y el motor diesel. Pero seguro que desde Alemania nunca había salido un invento tan peculiar como el restaurante automatizado. Digo “restaurante” por decir algo, porque más bien parece una montaña rusa, con largos carriles de metal que se entrecruzan en el comedor. Esta especie de raíles sale de la cocina a la altura del techo y pasan por las mesas, dando multitud de giros por el camino. La comida llega en pequeñas ollas, fijadas sobre ruedas. Salchichas supersónicas, crepes de alta velocidad y botellas devino que salen zumbando hacia la mesa de los clientes, con ayuda de nuestra querida gravedad. “Mi intención era la de crear un sistema de restaurantes totalmente innovador”, dijo Michael Mack, el dueño del local. Es más, en el restaurante Baggers, en Nuremberg, no necesitas camareros para pedir la comida. Los clientes usan una pantalla táctil para ojear el menú y elegir la comida. Además también puedes usar los ordenadores para mandar e-mails o mensajes de texto mientras esperas a que te la sirvan. Aunque todo esto quizás no llame la atención a aquellos que gusten de un servicio más tradicional. Te alegrará saber que en la cocina son las manos de una persona, no las de una máquina, las que elaboran la comida. No se ha encontrado una forma de automatizar el chef...todavía.

traditional production methods and avoid having pink wines created through the addition of a little red wine into a white legally defined and labeled as “rosé.” The win came after a concerted effort by the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence, or Provence Wine Council earlier this year.According to new reports appearing on the UPI news service and elsewhere, the European Commission retreated from its proposal to allow the blending of wines to create rosé after hearing from the three principal rosé -producing nations.“It is important that we listen to our producers when they are concerned about changes on our regulations,” said European Farm Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.

And down the tracks - in little pots with wheels fixed to the bottom - comes the food.Supersonic sausages, high-pace pancakes and wine bottles whizzing down to the customers’ tables with the help of good old gravity. “I wanted to come up with a complete new restaurant system” said Michael

Mack, the restaurant owner. What’s more, at the Baggers restaurant in Nuremberg, you don’t need waiters to order food. Customers use touch-screen TVs to browse the menu and choose their meal.You can even use the computers to send e-mails and text messages while you wait for the food to be cooked. But all this may not appeal to those who like traditional waiter service.You will be pleased to know that up in the kitchen, it is man, not machine, that makes the food. They haven’t found a way of automating the chef...well not yet anyway.
