Bienvenidos a la edición de julio de ElMensajero, es un número centradomás en nuestra segunda reunión anual
y en el importante anuncio y presentaciónde la nueva directora de MensaInternacional Bibiana Balanyi.
Nuestro SIG de fotografía que esprimordialmente ocupado por una misiónfotográfica al Molino de las Flores y fotos dealgunas caminatas en Jesus Maria. Del SIG decine una breve crítica de la película sinlímites, que se relaciona sin duda connuestra asociación y la inteligencia.

He decidido darle unarevisión a este filmeen lugar de a un es-
treno porque es algo quetiene relación directa conMensa y la inteligencia por-que hablan y repiten el temadel coeficiente intelectual(CI) y lo que pueden hacerlas sustancias sobre él.
Sin Límites, protagonizadapor Bradley Cooper, un ac-tor que no ha destacado es-pecialmente por susinterpretaciones parece estaren esta cinta en uno de susmejores papeles.
Dado que logra mostrar-nos que para hacer el papelde un escritor fracasado,frustrado y cansado con lavida tiene los recursos his-triónicos y además una bue-na dirección por parte deldirector, Neil Burger.
Y, como ya adelanté es lahistoria de un escritor fraca-sado que tiene problemascon su esposa y en general
con el curso de su vida, queen algun momento se en-cuentra con su ex-cuñadoque trafica con sustanciasilegales.

Él le presenta un medica-mento llamado NZT, ésteaumenta su inteligencia sor-prendemente, hasta hablande un CI de tres dígitos, loque le permite hacer todo lo
que no había podido. Con-cluir su libro, invertir en WallStreet y predecir el mercado,etc.
La cuestión es que le per-mite hacer cosas increibles,con las que todos soñamosporque sólo se pueden hacercon años de trabajo y cons-tancia aunque se sea muyinteligente.
La película aún bajo estapremisa poco real, resuelvemuy bien la problemática dela inteligencia y de tener unavida asi de compleja.
Es un guión poco com-plejo pero muy rápido ycontundente, lo que se vefavorecido sin lugar a dudaspor los cortes de edición yuna fotografia lo suficiente-mente atractiva para man-tenernos con buenas dosisde emoción.

This is the first article fromme in my capacity as Inter-national Chair. I cannot tellyou how happy I am to bethe recipient of your valua-ble trust!
I was surprised when de-clared winner as I came infirst in a tough contest, andit was my honour and plea-sure to compete with exce-llent and great personalities!Mensa could only win by thissituation with so many goodcandidates willing to serve.
I am very grateful that Icould take part in this com-petition – and be successful!Most importantly, thank youvery much for all your va-luable votes, support, nicewords, sympathy, positiveenergy! I truly and utterlyappreciate it!
I really feel honoured byyour trust. I hope to be ableto measure up to the taskand serve for the maximumbenefit of our organisation –and of each and everymember in it. I am lookingforward to working with theexcellent group of officerson the Executive Committee(ExComm).
We have five ‘old’ mem-bers on ExComm and threenew. This is an excellentcombination because the‘old’ people represent conti-nuity while the ‘new’ onescan bring in new and freshideas. Together we can

Let me express our thanksfor the outgoing officers fortheir excellent job!
As you see from thecountries above, we have acolourful team, embracingseveral continents, countries,languages – and, of course,time zones.
The fact that there is 15hours difference in totalamong the places where Ex-Comm members live is tan-gible evidence of the truly’global’ character of our so-ciety. All of us are determi-ned to work hard and makeall efforts for the benefit ofour society. I hope my mottowill come true: less talk, mo-re action!
What to expect?Being most probably the
youngest International Chairever – and only the thirdchairwoman in Mensa’s his-tory – I am committed towork with an internationalsociety that is attractive foryoung people as well.
In my opinion, being aMensa member is cool,trendy and most of all greatfun! My aim is to help proveto younger generations thatit is exciting to be a mem-ber!
I would like to developgreater visibility of interna-tional Mensa. Excellent waysto achieve this would be tocompletely refurbish the in-ternational website and haveBibiana Balanyi

a greater presence on socialmedia. Leveraging on thefindings of various webcommittees and from myown experiences, my objec-tive is to fully re-structurethe website so that it beco-mes an active, up-to-dateand advanced place of ex-change.
My aim is to work on arenewed international web-site with enhanced contentand extensive pool of infor-mation, functioning as aknowledge centre that isworthy of the organisationconstituting some of themost intelligent people inthe world.
After all, increased cohe-sion and co-operationamong the countries, un-derstanding and respectingdifferences, better exchangeand sharing of knowledge,experiences, documents, andideas with a view for deve-lopment, are all essential forthe growth of Mensa. As faras the field of technology isconcerned, the introductionof the e-voting system isanother top priority.
I hope be able to best re-present our colourful societyembracing so many nationsand cultures. I promise bet-ter understanding for locality– countries, culture, people –while keeping the globalcharacter in mind as well as abetter understanding of cul-tural differences.
At meetings, I will do mybest to maintain and furtherdevelop a positive and en-couraging atmosphere whe-re all opinions are heard. Ihope to be able to achieve
all that; that is, to be the fa-ce of Mensa to the outsideworld and be a good ‘mot-her’ internally.
My ultimate aim is amulti-faceted internationalMensa embracing everyone.A colourful internationalMensa that is not an abstractconcept for the membersand the countries but a livingand active construct, witheverybody feeling part of it,being involved and havingownership of it.

3.Penang PuzzleChallengeIn April, the Penangbranch of MalaysianMensa conductedthe Puzzler’s Cha-llenge for Penangschools
This initiative was origi-nally mooted about eightyears ago.The first competi-tion was open to the publicand not specifically for uppersecondary school students.

During the next three orfour years it became appa-rent that the puzzles couldbe honed to exploit the ‘gap’in maths and science. At theback of my mind was a nig-gling thought as to how bestMensa could be involved ineducational endeavours.
How could we activelycontribute to make Mensa abyword in being a providerof activities that engagedstudents? Here was an op-portunity to provide an acti-vity that overlappededucation and entertainment.The puzzles had to involve as-pects of math and sciencethat the students were ac-tually studying about.
Without that overlap, itwould not be relevant tostudents to participate andearn co-curricular points. Yetthe event should not appearto be overtly ‘exam-like’. Playand fun had to be an essen-tial part of it. Schools wouldnot be able to provide thataspect in almost every sub-ject. Hopefully, the Puzzler’sChallenge could fill the gapand give students insight aswell. The intended insightwas to link the real worldphenomena with the abstru-se aspects of science andmaths!
Many students (more thanbefore) tend to drop out ofmath and science after Form5. The lure of technical de-grees or diplomas is not asstrong as before – most pro-bably due to more optionsthan in previous years.Nowadays the variety ofqualifications that studentscan avail of themselves is
broad. In my opinion, we stillneed to have a finger (infact, quite a few fingers) inthe technical pie. As such,students need to stay enga-ged in maths and sciencelonger to perceive their po-wer and influence in all mat-ters of technology andinnovation. No better way isthere for society to keepimproving and prospering.
In the Puzzler’s Challenge(this year 80 teams of twoentered), it is heartening tosee female students in largenumbers. We hope to havethe resources to expand theevent to make it a premierevent on the school calen-dar. In the process, we mustnot lose sight of the fun as-pect. Mensa has the expe-rience after these few yearsto develop the Challengefurther.
The Penang branch con-tinues to marshal its resour-ces to meet and overcomemany difficulties in organi-zing the Challenge – con-tacting the schools, findingsuitable venues, and gathe-ring and training a largenumber of volunteers.
It is hoped that the Cha-llenge continues in the co-ming years and furthercements the perception thatschools have regarding theevent. It should give Mensa apresence in the public’s mind
that it is contributing to stu-dents’ activities in a directand tangible way.
Another initiative is theco-curricular course beingoffered to a private school inPenang. It is a pilot projectwhich now has run its coursefor the academic year 2014-2015. The purpose of thecourse is to engage students(for 80 minutes every week)in problem-solving usingpuzzles and games that areopen-ended.
BL Yeoh and I conductedthese classes (about 38 each)for both primary and secon-dary school students. This“field” experience was extre-mely valuable in honing thecourse material (especiallyfor the primary students) tomake it workable in a class-room setting.
It has been a thrilling ex-perience to fashion challen-ges for the students – andreally satisfying watchingthem wrestle with them –and seeing them finally get-ting the solutions. One of theoutcomes is the increasingability of students to experi-ment hands-on and getconfidence in grappling with“impossible” tasks! We arenow formalizing the methodo-logy of how to hold such classesand eventually hope to marketit as a Mensa initiative for co-curricular courses in schools.Jay Menon
