Located at 1,200 meters above sea level, La Mesa has a total extension of 148 Kilometers and
29,139 inhabitants according to data provided from the DANE. The north borders with the municipalities of Quiple, Cachipay and Zipacón; in the east with Bojacá and Tena; to the west with Quipile and Anapoima; and towards the south it borders with El Colegio and Anapoima.
From this jewel of Cundinamarca one can admire the valleys and a series of rivers which include the Bogotá river and the Apulo and Magdalena rivers, along with the Tolima and Ruiz volcanoes and the snow covered peaks of Mount Santa Isabel

A sólo 69 Km de Bogotá lo espera La M e s a . U n m u n i c i p i o d e l departamento de Cundinamarca,
cabecera de la provincia del Tequendama, al que puede llegar por automóvil o transporte intermunicipal.
La opción más rápida es salir por la Calle 13, pasando el peaje hacia el municipio de Mosquera y luego dirigiéndose por la vía Bogotá- La Mesa- Girardot.
Si usted está en el Terminal de transportes de Bogotá cuenta con varias compañías de autobuses intermunicipales que por un valor aproximado de 10.000 pesos lo pueden llevar hasta esta joya del Tequendama. Si arriba a Bogotá por el Aeropuerto Internacional El Dorado o el Puente Aéreo, la distancia entre estos es muy corta y tardará aproximadamente 10 minutos entre tales puntos.
Si se encuentra en Ibagué puede viajar por la ruta a Villavicencio, tomando la vía hacia Espinal, luego en el kilometro 16 cambiar hacia Girardot y de allí dirigirse por la carretera en dirección a Tocaima.

from Bogotá, a municipality in the
department of Cundinamarca, in the
province of Tequendama, a place where
you can go by private vehicle or public
transportation.
The easiest way to get there is by taking
Calle 13 (13th street), passing toll booth
towards the municipality of Mosquera and
later jumping onto the route Bogotá- La
Mesa-Girardot.
If you are in the bus terminal in Bogota,
there are many companies here that
provide transportation services to this
jewel of Tequendama for approximately
9,000 pesos. From the International Air port
known as El Dorado Airport or the Puente
Aéreo (which is a short distance from the
main Airport) in Bogota, the distance to La
Mesa is very short and you can arrive there
in approximately 10 minutes.
If you are in Ibagué you can take the
Villavicencio route towards Espinal until
you get to Kilometer 16 where you must
turn towards Girardot and from there you
must take the road towards Tocaima.

3Si visita ecosistemas sensibles, como reservas naturales o nacimientos de agua, infórmese previamente de
cómo hacerlo para causar el menor impacto posible.
4Utilice los recursos naturales, como agua y energía, con moderación. Tenga en cuenta que son bienes
escasos y economícelos en zonas de escasez, tomando duchas cortas y no dejando las llaves abiertas mientras no usa el agua.
5Al comprar regalos y recuerdos busque productos que sean expresión de la cultura local.
Favoreciendo de esta forma la economía de los pueblos que lo acogen y la diversidad cultural.
6En el destino disfrute conociendo la cultura, costumbres, gastronomía y tradiciones de las poblaciones
locales. Respete y acérquese a ellas.
7Si utiliza su vehículo particular elija la ruta más directa. Lleve consigo el equipaje indispensable porque
recuerde: a menor peso, menor consumo de combustible y menor cantidad de CO2 al medio ambiente.
8Al llegar a su lugar de destino, utilice medios de locomoción alternativos, como caminar, andar en bicicleta o a
caballo. Disfrute del paisaje.
9Al finalizar su viaje cuéntele a sus amigos y parientes sobre las vacaciones. Su opinión es el mejor
medio para divulgar el turismo verde del Tequendama.

for this reason you should be as economical as possible in places where resources are scarce, taking short showers and not leaving the water running when you are not using it .
5When buying gifts and souvenirs look for products that are culturally affiliated with the local area. This
favors the local economy and its cultural diversity.
6Enjoy yourself by getting to know the culture, customs, diet and traditions of the local population. Respect them
while getting to know them.
7If you are planning on using a privately owned vehicle, take the most direct route. Only take the most
important things with you because if you carry less weight, you will burn less fuel in your vehicle, therefore minimizing the amount of C02 that goes into the environment.

By coming to la Mesa, the visitor can let him/herself become enchanted by its countrys ide and cul ture , and
especially by its people. Beginning with the question, what icons does la Mesa have to offer? The economist Óscar Jiménez took the time in 2010 to take a close look at the citizens and tourists in this area to research what potential for tourism the area had being that it is really one big 360 degree overlook. The results showed that the blend of the area´s countryside along with its culture is la Mesa´s main attraction. A municipality that has 11 overlooks where one can appreciate the beautiful mountain range that also holds an invaluable part of the area´s Heritage: the story of the Santa Bárbara Church, the relevance of the main park, the importance of the local town street market and the multiple historical streets of this corner of Tequendama. Each and every town icon has been maintained by the area´s inhabitants and has been converted into a big tourist
attraction thanks to the safety offered by local authorities, the
great variety of adequate hotels, restaurants and leisure areas for each and every visitor and the growing number of eco-sustainable areas in la Mesa. As revealed by Oscar Jimenez´s study, backed by Fenalco and the Government of the Department of Cundinamarca, the citizens of la Mesa´s colonial streets are not only key factors when it comes to the maintenance the area´s tourist spots, they have also become excellent hosts that look after the needs of the area´s tourists, following strict codes of excellence. These are the individuals that lead this movement of touristic development. They take the area´s material heritage as their own and they take into consideration the fact that the culture and beautiful countryside have great economic, social and environmental value. But on top of everything else, those who face the challenge of making this giant overlook of Cundinamarca, a place that was recently identified as the point of departure for the José Celestino Mutis expedition, the next major tourist hotspot of Colombia.

Caminamos una hora y media para l legar al O c a s o , p o r c a m i n o s
empedrados, con rocas planas como mesas lustradas y siempre vivas al lado y lado. Habíamos amanecido en la finca Tres Esquinas bajo el aroma de c a f é re c i é n m o l i d o : u n a f r a g a n c i a p e n e t r a n t e y atrayente que hace saborear al exquisito transeúnte mañanero. Vimos como se lavaba el café, como era la faena para que oliera a arepas de maíz pelao y café teñido con un poquito de leche fresca.
Es hermoso amanecer en una f inca cafetera . Mi rar los cardenales cantando desde las cinco y media de la mañana, con los azulejos y toches peleándose un pedazo de semilla, los gallos cantando en la distancia, los patos pidiendo desayuno y las cachamas saltando en el lago verde. ¡Que paisaje! Lleno de árboles de flor morado, de ocobos y nogales, de guamos y gualandayes, de palo negro y guacharaco. La quebrada La salada l impiecita bajando despacito y la mata de guadua surcando la cordillera, como crespos de niña quinceañera
regados pero organizados por la piel montaña.
Hoy la finca cafetera es una empresa sostenible. Tiene cultivos ordenados y árboles diversos que atraen grandes pájaros amaril los, rojos y tucanes. Alberga trabajadores afil iados al seguro social, mientras los niños estudian la primaria en colegios modernos. Hoy la granja de café no contamina, las mieles de sus frutos se usan como abono. Se estudian y aplican técnicas adecuadas para tratar las aguas negras. Se reciclan las latas, plásticos, vidrios y papeles. Hoy la finca huele a frutas tropicales, miel de las abejas y desayuno campesino con caldo, arepas, tinto y jugo de naranja.
Venga a la finca cafetera y coja el mejor café del mundo. Juegue a ser Juan por un tiempito. B á ñ e s e e n l a c a s c a d a trasparente. Saque una mojarra amarrada a un anzuelo. Que alegría ver como florece el cafetal, como llegan las abejas en febrero, en agosto y en septiembre. ¡No se aguante, venga y quédese en una finca cafetera!

We walked an hour and a half to get to Ocaso, on rocky trails covered in flat stones that looked like polished
tables. We had woken up on the farm named Tres Esquinas, to the aroma of freshly ground coffee with a penetrating and attractive fragrance, an aroma that adds an exquisite taste to the occasional early riser. We saw how the coffee was washed after a night of being fermented in a big clean tub. We saw how each task was assigned, how the area smelled like ground corn, and the colored coffee added with a little bit of fresh milk. There is nothing more beautiful than waking up on a coffee farm: looking at the cardinals and blackbirds singing away at five thirty in the morning, the bluebirds and rabbits fighting over a piece of seed, the roosters singing in the distance, the ducks asking for breakfast, the frogs leaping over the green lake. What a countryside! Full of purple flowered trees and walnuts, black branched guamas and gualandayes. The fresh clean stream called La salada slowly moving down the mountain and the bamboo plants covering
the mountain range like the frizzy hair of a fifteen year old girl sprinkled all over by the mountainside. Today the coffee farm is a sustainable business. The crops are well organized and filled with a diversity of trees that attract big yellow birds, reds and toucans. The farm´s employees are affiliated to the national social security system and the children are enrolled
in primary and modern schools. Today the coffee farm is not polluted nor does it waste the fruits of the earth which are used as a kind of guarantee. Today, adequate purif ication techniques are researched and applied to treat the black water. Cans, plastics, glass, and paper are all recycled. The farm smells like tropical fruits, natural bee honey, traditional farmers breakfasts that consist of soup and arepas along with traditional straight coffee called Tinto with orange juice. Come to the coffee farm and have the best coffee in the world! Pretend
to be Juan for a little while! Come and bathe in the transparent waterfall and go fishing for some delicious fresh fish! What a joy it is seeing how the beautiful coffee plantation flourishes.

El grupo indígena de los Doimas según los registros
habitaron estas tierras en 1470. Hacían parte de la
nación Panche que se encontraba dispersa en
diferentes rancherías. En la Mesa, su principal
asentamiento estaba en la vereda Doima, aunque no es
extraño encontrar en toda la región rocas con su arte
rupestre.
Una expresión de cultura y forma de ver el mundo para
la cual escogían las piedras de acuerdo a la salida del
sol, la luna, los montes, los cerros y las lagunas, como
forma de veneración y respeto a la vida. Entre estos
lugares emblemáticos, el cerro Macute se constituyó en
el ídolo del rayo y el trueno, donde impactan esta serie
de fenómenos naturales.
Lo curioso es que las piedras halladas en la Mesa
apuntan hacia el cerro del Quinini. Espacio que era
dedicado a la congregación de esta cultura y un lugar
para prepararse antes de plasmar su historia en las
rocas.
Precisamente para conocer más sobre estos ancestros,
Ricardo Rico Romero se ha dedicado desde 1992 al
análisis de las improntas y prepara un libro sobre el arte
rupestre de la región. Su labor centrada en interpretar
los petroglifos, grabados en piedra, ha encontrado 15
rocas alrededor de diferentes predios del municipio.
Entre estos, el petroglifo denominado Ritual del parto,
figura 1, en el cual se puede observar como sale el feto
pegado al cordón umbilical. Mientras en la segunda
imagen hay una figura antropomorfa, danzando o
llevando un ritual de agradecimiento por una nueva
vida.
Rico cuenta que se llevó una agradable sorpresa el día
en que descubrió una manifestación en una de las
rocas con un singular parecido al mapa de La Mesa. En
un tono firme asegura: "los Doimas encontraron en el
arte rupestre la forma más segura de que sus creencias
y cultura traspasaran la barrera del tiempo".

The indigenous peoples engraved their culture here in monumental rocks that tower over 12 meters high.The indigenous group known as the Doimas, according to records, inhabited these lands in 1470. They formed part of the Panche nation which was dispersed throughout different areas. In La Mesa, their main area was located in the Doima path, but it is not uncommon to see rocks with their art engraved throughout the entire region.
These were expressions of culture and form that showed how they viewed the world. For this reason they chose each rock according to the position of the sun, the moon, the hills, the mountains, and the lagoons as a form of worship and respect for life. Another symbolic area known as the Macute Mountain, is the idol of lightning and thunder, a place where these natural phenomena occur frequently.
What is interesting is that the rocks found in La Mesa point towards Quinini Mountain, a place that was used for the congregation of this culture and a place to prepare before engraving their culture into the rocks.
With the purpose of getting to know more about these ancestors, Ricardo Rico Romero has dedicated his life, since 1992, to the analysis of these drawings and is writing a book about this topic in the region. He has found 15 different rocks in different parts of this municipality that have indigenous scripture engraved in them. Among these is the engraving known as Ritual del Parto or the birth giving ritual, figure 1, where one can observe the fetus coming out of the womb with the umbilical cord still attached. In the second image there is an anthropomorphous individual, dancing or doing a ritual of thanks for a new life.
Rico tells how he was pleasantly surprised t h e d a y w h e n h e d i s c o v e r e d a manifestation in one of the rocks which appeared to be a map of La Mesa. In a firm tone he says that "the Doimas found the most secure way of making sure that their culture and beliefs surpassed the barrier of time through this primitive art form."

For this man, originally from the city of
Medellín but currently living in Bogota, the
adventurous tradition has taken him up the
Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Cocuy,
the Parque de los Nevados (Snow peaked
Mountain National Park), the volcanoes in
Southern Colombia and up Mountain tops
in Peru and Ecuador as well as throughout
many small towns in our country which are
a joy for many adventurers who appreciate
beautiful natural scenery.

El montañismo fue la práctica que le enseñó a Sergio Llano afrontar los retos y trabajar por planes concretos.
Desde el colegio este amante de los picos y cordilleras, entendió que el esfuerzo para llegar a la cima es una analogía con muchos hechos de la vida cotidiana.

In order to enjoy a safe and pleasant trip in La Mesa, we suggest you take into account the following recommendations:
La Mesa has an average temperature of 24 degrees Celsius but it is important to know that the temperature can vary with great frequency. Since La Mesa is located on a plateau of the eastern mountains where the warm air from the Magdalena Valley mixes with the thick clouds of the Bogota Savanna, there is often very intense fog. This is why we recommend that you bring a jacket with you.
If you plan on doing sports that may take place in the lakes, mountains or rivers and may be considered risky, we recommend that you take advantage of our specialized services and go along with a guide. If you decide to go ahead on your own, it is recommended that you do it during the day and use a 4x4 vehicle. If you plan on travelling away from the roads or on unpaved routes take plenty of water, food, tools and additional.
• The water from the faucet is not good for human consumption. If some hotels have purified water, we recommend only drinking bottled water. • National and international credit cards are a c c e p t e d i n m o s t c o m m e r c i a l establishments. Visa- Master Card and American Express among others. If you bring foreign currency you can exchange it for Colombian pesos at any Money Exchange establishment in the municipality. •The municipality has several Banks such as
Davivienda, Banco de Bogotá, Banco Agrario, Bancolombia, Banco Popular and Colmena. • If you plan on buying gifts, handmade crafts or souvenirs, we recommend you purchase local things. This way you will help the local economy along with the craftsmen and manufacturers. • La Mesa is a safe place, but, just as in every vacation destination, it is good to take into consideration certain precautions: - Do not show off valuable items. -Use well lit and highly transited streets
and walkways. -Be cautious and avoid moving around
late at night. -Drink moderately. - Try to avoid walking around alone. It is preferable, before getting into a taxi, to know exactly how much the taxi charges, how long it will take and which streets it will take. For a drive from the main area of the municipality, the minimum rate is of 3,000 pesos during the day and 4,000 pesos at night.

Para que disfrute de una estancia segura y agradable en La Mesa, le sugerimos tome en cuenta las

La Mesa tiene una temperatura promedio de 24º C pero debe saber que varía con relativa frecuencia. Toda vez que al estar ubicada en una meseta de la cordillera oriental donde confluyen los aires calientes del valle de Magdalena y las nubes espesas de la sabana de Bogotá, en ocasiones se presenta una neblina intensa.
Por lo tanto, es recomendable que conserve en su bolso algo para abrigarse.
Para hacer deportes que conlleven algún tipo de riesgo en los lagos, montañas o ríos utilice los servicios calificados de operadores turísticos. Si d e c i d e v i a j a r p o r s u c u e n t a , preferiblemente hágalo de día y en un vehículo 4 x 4. Si va a viajar por fuera de carretera o caminos destapados lleve consigo agua, alimentos, herramientas y combustible extra.
El agua de la llave no es apta para el consumo humano. Si bien en algunos hoteles cuentan con agua purificada, le recomendamos consumir únicamente agua embotellada.
En la mayoría de establecimientos comerciales se aceptan tarjetas de crédito nacionales e internacionales. Visa - Master Card y America Express entre otras. Si trae monedas diferentes al peso, puedes cambiarlas en las casas de cambio del municipio.
El municipio cuenta con varios Bancos:

Si va a comprar regalos, artesanías o recuerdos, prefiera adquirir artículos de la región. Así apoyará la economía de los artesanos y fabricantes.
La Mesa es un municipio seguro, pero al igual que en cualquier otro destino, es impor tante tomar las deb idas precauciones:
-No ostente objetos valiosos. -Camine por calles transitadas e
iluminadas. -Sea prudente y evite exponerse a altas
horas de la noche. -Beba moderadamente. -Vaya siempre acompañado. De preferencia, antes de abordar un taxi, infórmese sobre la ruta de su destino (tarifa de cobro, duración del trayecto, calles que transita). Para un recorrido en la cabecera municipal, la tarifa mínima de día es 3.000 pesos y por la noche de 4.000.

ARTE DE MI TIERRAPintando al compás de la Mesa
Desde la simbiosis entre la Costa y el altiplano, como describe Jorge Jurado al municipio de la Mesa, este artista de
trazos diversos decidió hace dos años radicarse allí para hacer lo que más le gusta: pintar.
Desarrollando una profesión que aprendió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de su natal Cartagena, lo ha llevado a presentaciones colectivas e individuales por Alemania, Estados Unidos, Francia, Noruega y Venezuela y, en el año 2005 le permitió ser seleccionado por la UNESCO como pintor humanitario de la iniciativa El planeta proyecta hacia el futuro.
Hoy ésta serie Sofia´s Trunk, inspirada en su hija, y las series Comics, que alberga sus primeros cuadros fundamentados en los recuerdos de su infancia, Tiempos que expresa las fusiones, Espacios Geográficos en donde el color es el centro, Look Who´s Talking con los animales como protagonistas, Personajes, en donde apenas se delinean estos en medio de las sombras y las series Juguetes y Paisajes se han convertido en su fuente de inspiración para su nuevo proyecto artístico: la serie Feedback.
Una apuesta con la cual pretende unificar y poner en una sola superficie su experiencia de composición. Corroborando que su larga trayectoria desde el año 1999 lo han convertido, como dijo la critica de arte, Natalia Vega, en un artista que “cuestiona los cánones estrictos del concepto modernista, del estilo único como marca de identidad”.
Valor cultural que de hecho se ha enriquecido por su paso por la Mesa, pues tal como podemos verificar en su obra los entornos de este rincón de Cundinamarca fueron también plasmados en varias de sus telas. Sus cuadros Gestos y Movimientos son así testimonio de cómo para este artista, quien se autodenomina n a d a i r r e v e r e n t e , e l municipio no sólo le ha otorgado la tranquilidad para crear y la facilidad de estar cerca de la capital, sino motivado a valerse del óleo y el acrílico para enriquecer su experiencia cultural.

From the symbiosis between the coast and the highlands, as Jorge Jurado describes the municipality known as “la Mesa”, an
artist with a very diverse background who decided to move there to do what he loves the most: Paint.Jurado developed his craft in the Escuela de Bellas Artes (School of Beautiful Arts) in his native Cartagena, which has taken him to collective and individual presentations throughout many countries around the world such as Germany, the United States, France, Norway and Venezuela. In 2005 he was labeled a humanitarian painter by the UNESCO in the initiative known as The planet plans for the future. Today, Jurado is planning on creating a new artistic project called Feedback which has been inspired by a number of different series such as Sofia´s Trunk, Comics (which harbors his first fundamental paintings in memory of his childhood), Tiempos (Times) which shows connections, Espacios Geográficos (Geographic Spaces, where color is the center of everything), Look who´s Talking with animals as the main characters, Personajes (Characters), where the drawings are made up of outlines of shadows, and Juguetes y Paisajes (Toys and Landscapes). In the series Feedback, Jurado plans on unifying and putting the entire composition on one single surface. His long trajectory since 1999 has made him, as was said by the art critic, Natalia Vega, an artist that “questions the traditional norms of the
modernist concept of only one single style of identity,” a cultural value
that has been enriched by his stay in la Mesa, as noted in his works that reflect the surroundings of this corner of the department of Cundinamarca. His work Gestos y Movimientos (Gestures and
Movements) is a true testimony of how this artist, who self proclaims
himself as nothing irreverent , believes that this municipality
hasn´t only given him the tranquility to be able to
create, along with the convenience of being close to the capital, b u t h a s a l s o mot ivated him to value himself because of the oil and acrylic that has enriched his cultural experience.

Adobe, Wood and concrete can be used
without destroying the environment
The ancestor s that l i ved in the
Tequendama region built using adobe,
wood and rock. Among living proof of this
are the colonial houses of La Mesa. It is easy
to notice that the homes on the main street,
8th street (la 8), have been built using
adobe, just as the Santa Barbara Church
which remains in good condition.
According to the architect Alberto Torres,
everything is cultural. The reason for this is
that people should build their homes using
the materials that surround them and one
of the materials that can be easily taken
advantage of is adobe because it is
inflammable, not thermal, earthquake

Los antepasados que vivieron en la región del Tequendama construyeron en adobe, madera y piedra. Una de las pruebas vivientes son las casas coloniales de La Mesa. Fácilmente se puede señalar que las casas de la calle principal, la 8, están levantadas en adobe, así como la Iglesia Santa Bárbara. La cual se conserva en muy buen estado.
