Characteristics of a Thinker Are you OPEN MINDED about other people‘s view?

Are you HONEST to yourself (or others) when you are wrong?

Do you have the COURAGE and PASSION to take initiative andconfront problems and meet challenges?

Are you AWARE of your own biases and preconceptions?

Do you WELCOME CRITICISM from other people?

Do you have INDEPENDENT opinions and are not afraid to disagree?



Characteristics of Thinking process• Conceptualizing— developing a ―mind picture‖

• Applying—putting conceptual info to use

• Analyzing—closely examining, tearing apart or breaking down toreally look at

• Synthesizing—pulling things together in a well organized logical way

• Evaluating—making decisions about; reviewing; assessing; rtc.

Outside the BoxThinking outside the box requires different

attributes that include:

• Willingness to take new perspectives to day-to-

day work.

• Openness to do different things and to do

things differently.

• Focusing on the value of finding new ideas and

acting on them.

• Striving to create value in new ways.

• Listening to others.

• Supporting and respecting others when they

come up with new ideas.



Inside The BoxThinking inside the box means accepting the

status quo.

• In-the-box thinkers find it difficult to recognize

the quality of an idea.

• An idea is an idea. A solution is a solution. In

fact, they can be quite pigheaded when it comes

to valuing an idea.

• They rarely invest time to turn a mediocre

solution into a great solution.

• More importantly, in-the-box thinkers are

skillful at killing ideas. They are masters of the

creativity killer attitude such as "that'll never

Basic Solutions

1. Study another industry.

2. Learn about another religion.

3. Take a class.

4. Read a novel in an unfamiliar genre.5. Write a poem.

6. Draw a picture.

7. Turn it upside down.

8. Work backwards.

9. Ask a child for advice.

10. Invite randomness.

White Hat - Objective

Facts, Figures, Data and Information

Questions:

• What information do we have here?

• What information is missing?

• What information would we like to have?

• How are we going to get the information?



Red Hat – Feelings

Feelings, Intuition, Emotions and Hunches

No need to justify the feelings. How do I feel about this rightnow?

Examples:

• My gut-feeling is that this will not work.

• I don't like the way this is being done.

• This proposal is terrible.• My intuition tells me that prices will fall soon.



Yellow Hat - Positive

Benefits, Feasibility and Optimism

Questions:

• Why is this worth doing?

• What are the benefits?

• Why can it be done?

• Why will it work?



Green Hat - Creative

Creative Ideas, Alternatives, Suggestions, and Proposals

Questions:

• Are there any additional alternatives?• Could we do this in a different way?

• Could there be another explanation?

• What are some possible solutions and courses of

action?



Blue Hat - Process

Sums up what is learned. Organization of thinking.Thinking about the thinking process (Reflection).

Examples:• Set the agenda.

• Suggest the next steps.

• Ask for other hats.

• Ask for summaries, conclusions,and decisions.

Brainstorm a Problem to discuss.

White Hat – Facts and information about the Problem?Red Hat – Feelings towards the Problem?

Black Hat – What are the negative aspects of the Problem?

Yellow Hat – What are the benefits/positive aspects of the Problem?

Green Hat – What alternatives do we have?Blue Hat - Sum what is learned and discuss possible next steps.
