Meternos en la semana santa, es comenzar diciendo que no estamoshablando de circunstancias en la vida de Jesús que le causaron lamuerte, sino de un solo acto de amor vivido en tres momentos, ytambién considerar que aunque la sucia y desastrosa realidad delpecado estuvo en el trasfondo de todo, se trasluce la esperanza, lapaz y la tranquilidad, porque no triunfó el pecado, la muerte, y latumba, sino la vida, la fidelidad del Buen Padre Dios y la entregagenerosa de Cristo que le llevó a dar su propia vida en defensa de loshombres pecadores. Un solo acto de amor. Es el estilo de salvacióndel Dios de los cielos. “Hosanna” La maana del domingo de Ramosfue un acontecimiento momentáneo para Jesús que se había pasadolos últimos años de su vida bendiciendo a la gente, ocupado en buscary en atender a todos los que había sido enviado. Pero casi la totalidadde su obra la había realizado en Galilea y muy poco en Jerusalén, demanera que cuando él llegó y las gentes comenzaron a poner susmantos en el suelo para que pasara Jesús montado en un humildeborrico, gritando hosannas y vivas al Hijo de David, al hijo de Diosque había sido enviado, otras gentes se preguntaban: ¿Quién es estehombre? Pero al fin, propios y extraños todos se unieron al regocijogeneral por la última entrada de Cristo a querida y respetada Jerusalén.El regocijo duró poco. Quizá unas cuantas horas. “Crucifícale”, judíoreligioso y respetuoso de las verdaderas tradiciones de sus mayores,Cristo celebró con gran emoción la cena pascual con sus discípulos,la que sería su última cena con ellos. Ahí cumplió su promesa dedarles a comer su propio Cuerpo, invitándoles a vivir en el amormutuo y en el servicio constante de unos para con otros. Les dioejemplo, ante el asombro de sus apóstoles, de servicio y de humildad,lavando personalmente los pies a cada uno de sus apóstoles. Cuandoterminaron, Cristo se dirigió con sus mismos apóstoles a un huertocercano, donde en medio de la oscuridad de la noche, comenzó en laintimidad su verdadera pasión, entregando toda su persona. Sunaturaleza humana se resistía, pero pudo más su voluntad de entregay de fidelidad a su Padre y al bien de todos los hombres. Y desde ahícomenzó a vivir la soledad del camino y del calvario, pues sus mismosapóstoles, lejos de acompañarle en aquél momento terrible, seentregaron, a unos cuántos metros de distancia, a un profundo sueño.Ahí fue aprehendido Jesús, traicionado por uno de los suyos. Otromomento que hay que destacar, es el momento en que Cristo fuepresentado ante Pilato, procurador romano en Jerusalén. Los judíosno podían condenar a nadie a la muerte y por eso se lo entregaron.Pilatos quedó convencidísimo de la inocencia de aquél hombre, perocuando entró en juego su propio prestigio y su futuro, cobardementecondenó a Jesús, no sin antes burlarse de los judíos en su propia caraconcediéndoles la vida de un criminal muy conocido, en lugar deJesús, y luego mandando colocar en lo alto de la cruz aquél letrero:“Jesús Nazareno, Rey de los judíos”, que tanto les doli los judíos.El camino al calvario fue muy difícil y lo fue más la estancia deCristo en lo alto de la cruz que murió abandonado de todos, y con laamargura de que su Padre lo abandonaba, aunque sus labiospronunciaban un salmo de sus mayores que instaba a la plenaconfianza en Dios que no defrauda. “Aleluya” como la entrada enJerusalén, la estancia de Jesús en la tumba y en la muerte duró muypoco, y ante el asombro de todos, Jesús venció de todo y sobre todos,y por su generosidad a toda prueba, el Padre, después de resucitarle,lo colocó a su derecha. Ahí él aguarda la vuelta de todos los hombresa los brazos mismos del Buen Padre Dios.

In preparing to celebrate the Passion of the Lord, two of the Gos-pels from the weekday Masses of the Fifth Week of Lent caughtmy attention. In one Gospel Jesus condemns the religious leadersof the Jewish people for refusing to recognize the Messiah. Thequestion that occurred to me was, “How could those who spenttheir lives in religion miss the Christ standing right in front ofthem?” I am convinced that they their fatal flaw resulted fromtheir deciding that they had all the answers among themselves andwithin themselves. We can easily make this mistake ourselves.God’s Presence in the world is far greater than we could ever imag-ine. His Power is deeper than we could ever achieve ourselves.Wrapped up in themselves, the Jewish leaders missed the Powerand Presence of the Lord. If we are wrapped up into ourselves, wewill also miss His Presence.The second Gospel from this week that caught my attention con-tained Jesus’ proclamation that when He is lifted up He woulddraw all people to Himself. The suffering of our Lord was neces-sary for all people. Christianity is not just a belief system for aselect group of people. All people are saved by Jesus Christ, evengood people searching for God, who have not received the grace tobecome Christian. By dying on the cross Jesus re-establishedmankind’s ability to be united to God. Jesus’ death gives all peoplespiritual life. This is what we mean when we use the term: re-demptive suffering.In the mystery of the Redemptive Suffering of the Lord, we par-ticipate in the cross of Christ. St. Paul put it this way in his Letterto the Colossians: “in my body I am filling up what is lacking inthe afflictions of Christ on behalf of His Body, which is the Church.”We all are. We all are making up for what is lacking. But how cantheir be a deficiency in Christ’s sacrifice? The answer is this: weare entrusted with the proclamation of the Kingdom of God. Theonly way we can do this is by living the Life of Christ. That is whywe are called Christians. We make Christ real in the world. Ourliving His Life includes our embracing His Sacrifice. We unite ourpains and sorrows to the Lord as our part in making the presenceof the Suffering Savior real in the world. I wish I could tell youthat pain does not exist and that you can make it go away withyour mind. But that is not the human condition. One of the greatbeauties of our faith is that there is value in every aspect of theChristian’s life, even those aspects of life that are full of pain. Sowe give it all to the Lord. We give Him our joy and our pain. Ifour health is poor or failing, if our lives are not going as we hoped,whatever pain we have, we give it to Him. We unite everything tothe Cross so others can experience the Sacrificial Love of Jesus inour lives. Let me ask you this, “Have you ever met a truly holyperson?” If you have, and I am sure we all have, we can’t help butrealize that for that person, pain is secondary. The only thing thatmatters for him or her is Christ. And his or her very sufferingprovides us with the experience of Christ’s Redemptive Presence.He or she is making up for what is lacking in the Cross of Christ:the participation of His people.We focus on the cross today, and throughout this Holy Week. Weunite our pains to Jesus’ pains. We receive His healing throughHis Cross. And we bring His Healing to others by allowing themto experience the Power of the Cross at work in our lives. We arecalled to participate in Redemptive Suffering.

«The celebration of Holy Week begins with the "Hosanna!" of Palm Sunday and culminates in the "Crucifyhim!" of Good Friday. But this is not a contradiction; rather it is the heart of the mystery the liturgy wants toproclaim: Jesus willingly gave himself up to his passion; he did not find himself crushed by superior forces (cf.Jn 10.18). It was he himself who, in discerning the Father's will, understood that his hour had come and heaccepted it with the free obedience of the Son and with infinite love for mankind. Jesus brought our sins to theCross and our sins brought Jesus to the Cross: he was crushed for our iniquities (cf. Is 53:5). The prophet saidin reply to David, who was seeking the one responsible for the deed Nathan had recounted to him: "You are theman!" (2 Sm 12:7). The Word of God gives us the same answer as we wonder what caused Jesus' death: "You arethe man!". Indeed, Jesus' trial and passion are repeated in the world today and renewed by every person whoabandons himself to sin and can only prolong the cry: "Not this man, but Barabbas! Crucify him!". Looking atJesus in his passion, we see humanity's sufferings as well as our personal histories reflected as in a mirror.Although there was no sin in Christ, he took upon himself what man could not endure: injustice, evil, sin,hatred, suffering and finally death.
