Si nos queremos remontar al origen, debemos de irnos atiempos de romanos, quienes apreciaban el vino de la zona eimpulsaron el cultivo de la vid. Ya en el siglo XIX, la Rioja vive supeor momento, una enfermedad afectó a las vides, la filoxera, yarrasó la gran mayoría de los viñedos. Una vez sobrepuestos deeste gran problema, en 1920 se protegió el nombre de “Rioja”en España, y unos años más tarde, en 1925, se estableció laprimera Denominación de Origen de España, DOCa Rioja.

Ancient Rome played a pivotal role in the history of Rioja wine andthe vine-growing. Later, it was the religious communities that werein charge of traditional wine-making processes. Phylloxera reachedLa Rioja in the 19th century. This is one of the main diseases thataffect grapevines and sadly devastated most vineyards. Oncethese challenges were overcome, in 1920 the name "Rioja" wasprotected, and a few years later, in 1925, the first D.O. Ca in Spain“Qualified Designation of Origin” was established, DOCa Rioja.

Vinos Rioja Oriental.

Los vinos de la DOCa Rioja proceden normalmente de la conjunción armónica, en diversas proporciones,de las variedades de uva cultivadas en la Denominación, siendo tres las zonas que la integran, RiojaOriental, Alta y Alavesa. Son vinos que poseen una buena composición aromática, frescos, de robustezmedia, con composición equilibrada y excelente bouquet, tanto vinos tintos como rosados y blancoscomponen esta variedad.

DOCa Rioja wine usually comes from the harmonious reflection of the grape varieties grown under this qualified designation,spreading through three areas: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. These wines have perfect aroma composition,balance and vivid flavours. They are fresh, medium bodied, zesty, with excellent bouquet. Red, rosé and white wines featurethis variety.

La Ruta del Vino ha conseguido tener un calendario deactividades, además de promover y colaborar en decenas deeventos que tienen lugar en la ciudad. Destacan la Ruta delVino y la Tapa (abril), la celebración de la Gala Enoturista delAño (mayo), que culmina con la entrega de premiosdel Certamen Vinos DO Yecla del Consejo Regulador. Enla Fiesta de la Vendimia en septiembre se representa la pisáde la uva y se degustan los primeros mostos, con conciertosy bailes populares en plena calle. On the evening before the start of the annual fiestas in Jumilla,and close to the meteor showers of the Night of San Lorenzo, atoast is made to the stars. An open-air celebration and a greatchance to taste the Denomination of Origin wines of Jumilla alongwith some of the highlights of the traditional local gastronomy.

Durante la semana de feria en Jumilla se vive un ambientefestivo continuo con actuaciones musicales, concursos,actividades deportivas y feria de atracciones.

Jumilla Wine Route. From 13th to 17th of August.

This celebration, which has been held since 1972, has beenawarded National Tourist Interest status, and includeselements such as the inauguration of the wine fountain, theceremonial offering of the first grape juice, and Children’s andTraditional Parades prior to the main “Cabalgata del Vino”.

During the week in which 15th August falls (the feast day of theVirgen de la Asunción) the atmosphere in Jumilla is festive,with a funfair, concerts, competitions and sporting events.

Visitors can enjoy various events dedicated to the MiddleAges: the Procession of the Virgen de la Asunción, the takingconquest of the castle and, at the end of the festivities, agrand parade in costume. Throughout the festivities there ismusic and dancing inspired by Jumilla’s medieval heritage.

National “Ciudad de Jumilla” Folk MusicFestival

Held in the Jardín de la Glorieta, the festival is organized by theGrupo de Coros y Danzas de Jumilla. Events held alongsideinclude a parade, music in the streets and a Folk Evening.
