Luke 12: 49 - 5349 Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!

50 There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!

51 Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.

52 From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three;

53 a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Reflections on Luke 12:49 - 53 Reflexiones en Lucas 12:49 - 53 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Aug. 18, 2013 The Gospel of today is a rare glimpse into the mind of Christ. It shows the agony he suffered for us! The word “fire” in Greek is “pur”. (From there we get the words pure, and purification). It reminds us of the holiness of Jesus as God. In the Old Testament God said: “Be holy as I am holy” (Leviticus 11.14).

En el Evangelio de hoy se ve una rara vista del interior de Jesús. ¡ Revela cómo sufrió una agonía por nosotros ! La palabra “fuego” en Griego es “pur”. De allí vienen las palabras como puro y purificación. Nos recuerda de la santidad de Jesús como Dios. En el Antiguo Testamento Dios dijo: “Sed santo como yo soy santo” (Levíticas 11:14).

Note that to begin a fire, you start with friction, or rubbing two stones together until heat occurs. Then you have a spark fly ! If you capture that spark with straw, you can get a flame. You feed that flame with bigger and bigger pieces of wood and eventually you will get fire. If the wind picks up that fire you might even get a blaze!

Noten que para tener fuego, tienes que comenzar con fricción. Si rasgas una piedra con otra, tarde o temprano se calientan, Luego salta una chispa. Si estás listo con paja, pueden comenzar una llamaradita. Si le arrimas pedacitos de madera seca con el tiempo se crece hasta ser un fuego. ¡ Y si el viento levanta ese fuego quizás que llegues hasta que esté ardiendo!

Jesus knew he was working with hearts of stone. And he also knew that if he kept working at it, those who loved him would one day be ready to receive the fire of the Holy Spirit. How many times, and in how many ways did he show his love and compassion, his signs and wonders, his teachings and admonitions. How much did he long to see the love of his Father burning in the hearts of all ! He knew he had to be “baptized” in his Passion in order for that to happen. And he longed for it !

Jesús sabia que estaba trabajando con corazones endurecidos como piedra. Y también sabia que si seguía haciendo la lucha, los que lo amaran algún día iban a recibir el fuego del Espíritu Santo. Cuantas veces, y cuantos modos, les mostró su amor y compasión, sus señas y maravillas, sus enseñanzas y amonestaciones. ¡ Que angustia sentía, y cuanto quería El ver al amor de su Padre ardiendo en los corazones ! El sabia que El tenia que ser “bautizado” en su Pasión para que esto sucediera. ¡ Con que ganas lo esperaba !

“I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished ! ” (Luke 12:49-50).

“Vine a traer fuego a la tierra, y ¡ cuanto desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo ! Pero también he de recibir un bautismo, y ¡ Qué angustia siento hasta que se haya cumplido ! ” (Lucas 12:49-50).

The affliction came with the rejection. Luke 2:34-35 speaks of the prophecy of Simeon: Jesus would be a “sign contradicted.” So from day one Jesus suffered for us. St. Ignatius Loyola notes that even on Christmas Day our Lord was “born in extreme poverty, that after many labors, after hunger, thirst, heat, cold, after insults and outrages, He might die on the cross, and all this for me” (Spiritual Exercises #116).

La angustia vino con el rechazo. Lucas 2:34-35 habla de la profecía de Simeón. Jesús seria una “seña contradecía.” De modo que desde su primer día Jesús sufrió por nosotros. San Ignacio de Loyola nota que hasta en el día de su nacimiento, Jesús “nació en suma pobreza, y a cabo de tantos trabajos, de hambre, de sed, de calor, y de frió, de injurias y afrentas, pudiera morir en la cruz, y todo esto por mí” (Ejercicios Espirituales # 116).

Jesus did not just give himself half-ways. It was total commitment. The baptism he went through for you and for me was complete, on the cross. “By his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). The love in his heart was ablaze. How is your love for him? Are you on fire with the Holy Spirit? Are you totally committed?

Jesús no se entrega a medias. Fue una entrega total. El bautismo que sufrió por ti y por mí fue completo, en la cruz. “Por sus llagas somos sanados” (Isaías 53:5). El amor de su corazón estaba ardiendo. ¿Cómo esta tu amor por Él? ¿Estas ardiendo con el fuego del Espíritu Santo? ¿Estas totalmente entregado?

If your love for Jesus is hardly noticeable, it might be a good idea to repent, and exam your conscience as you talk to him nailed to the cross, and then go to confession. Be reconciled and start all over again, and again, and again. Never give up. Discouragement is always from the evil one.

Si es que casi no se nota tu amor, quizás seria una buena idea arrepentirte, y hacer un examen de conciencia. Platica con Jesús clavado en la cruz. Luego ve a confesarte. Reconcíliate y comienza una vez mas, y otra vez mas, y otra. Nunca te desanimes. El desanimo siempre viene del espíritu malo.

Prepare well for Jesus as he comes to you in Holy Communion. Take time to grieve over your sins, and then let the fire of the Holy Spirit grow in your heart, and lead you. He will show you the way you are to follow. Remember the example of St. Sharbel Makluf (Feast day is July 24). He celebrated Mass close to noon, so as to devote the morning to prepare and the rest of the day to thanksgiving.

Prepárate bien para Jesús cuando él venga a ti en la Sagrada Comunión. Toma tiempo de llorar por tus pecados. Y deja que el fuego del Espíritu Santo crezca en tu corazón, y te dirija. Él te mostrara el camino que has de seguir. Recuerda el ejemplo de San Sharbel Makluf, (cuya fiesta es el a 24 de Julio). Celebraba la Misa cerca del medio día, para dedicar la mañana a la preparación, y el resto del día para dar gracias.

With this mental attitude, you will avoid being lukewarm, or indifferent. This condition is the most difficult to treat in the spiritual life. It manifests itself in passive resistance. Such a person will be present but not with enthusiasm. He is always late, and is the first to leave. Remember (Revelations 3:15) which says: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you be cold or hot. But since you are lukewarm, I will vomit you out of my mouth.” A word for the wise is sufficient!

Con esta actitud mental evitaras la tibieza, o la indiferencia. Esta condición es la mas difícil tratar en la vida espiritual. Se manifiesta en resistencia pasiva. Tal persona esta presente pero no con ganas. Siempre llega tarde, y es el primero para salir. Recuerda (Revelaciones 3:15) dice: “Yo conozco tus obras, que ni eres frió ni caliente. ¡Ojala fueras frió o caliente. Pero por cuanto eres tibio, y no frió, te vomitare de mi boca.” ¡Una palabra para lo sabios es suficiente!

Jesus wants us to be on Fire with the Holy Spirit!

¡ Jesús nos quiere ardiendo con el fuego del Espíritu Santo !
