Things you can admire in your free time

Last July, several Costa Rican artists, and Hotel Punta Islita members transformed the tiny town of Islita into a community art project. The work took place during an intense one- week stay. The town of Islita turns around a large soccer field bordered by several houses with murals painted by the internationally aclaimed artist Luis Chacn. There, young boys and girls played different games during their free time. One side of the field is a large communal room where the community enjoyed parties and other events, decorated with Chacn's more abstract images. Next to it there is a small cafeteria, painted with bright chickens where the 35 children from the one - room schoolhouse run and play here during their free time.

Artist Florencia Urbina, known for her paintings on San Jos city buses, created the lollysigns.

Kids answer kids' problems

Dear Kidsday: I am a 9 year -old girl, and I have a brother who is 3. He hits me and takes everything I have. If I take my stuff back, he cries to my parents. What should I do?

Mad sister.

Dear Mad Sister. Remember that he is very young, and he is going to try to get away with as much stuff as possible. Don't hit him back. Tell your mom he is taking your things all the time. Try to stay calm with him, and let him use some of your stuff some of the time. You don't have to be aggressive with him, but you also don't need him to push you around, either.

We think he just wants to spend time with you.

The Internet

The Internet is a computer network which connects computers from all over the world. With the Internet, people can share information. They can go shopping, send and receive letters (e-mail), play games, and find information for school projects or for fun.

The Internet is wonderful - there are lots of things to do and lots of interesting people to contact. But you have to be careful! There are good people and bad people everywhere and it's hard to tell the difference sometimes, especially on the Internet.

Rules for Internet Safety

Do not give personal information to people who you don't know. This includes your address, your phone number, you school, or you computer password. No one should ask you for this information.

Do not send your picture, or pictures of your family or friends, to anyone on the Internet.

Never arrange to meet a person who you met on the Internet. This is very dangerous.

Sometimes people send scary e-mails to people who they don't know. Don't answer these e-mails. Show them to your parents or your teacher.

Follow these simple rules and you'll see that the Internet is a fun, informative, and exciting place to be!

scary: causing fear or alarm

There are over 200 bones in the human body. The bones are joined together to make a skeleton. The bones help us stand and protect organs like the heart, lungs and brain. Ben is convinced that his bones are unbreakable.

The Disappearing Rain Forest

Every year an area of rain forest, twice the size of Costa Rica, is destroyed around the world. If they continue to be destroyed as fast as this, most of the world's rain forest will disappear.

The rainforests are cut down sometimes for wood, to plant crops, to make way for roads, but mainly for urban development. Unfortunately, the rainforest does not regrow unless we give it a chance.

There are many good reasons for saving the rain forests: they produce food, they are rich in wild life, they supply oxygen to the world, and many medicines are found there. If the rain forests are destroyed much land will become desert and the world's climate will change. Temperatures will go up, sea levels will rise and there will be many disasters as heavy floods, soil erosions and droughts.

Can you help?

Honk, honk, honk! Beep, beep! Screech! Crash! The sounds of city traffic! If you live in a big city, you have surely heard these familiar noises and felt the results of noise and air pollution.

Cars, buses, and trucks cause air pollution. Dirty air is bad for people, animals, and plants. It makes our eyes hurt and it makes some people sick. But we have to go to work and we have to go to school - we take buses and cars.

One solution is to use public transportation. Buses cause pollution, but a bus with thirty people on it causes less pollution than thirty cars on the road. Some cities have subways, which are trains that travel under the city. Other cities, like Chicago, have trains that travel above the roads. The air will not get as dirty if fewer people use their cars. Another solution is to carpool. It is people who live near each other, share one car and drive together. That's one car and not four or five on the road. And, of course, that causes less air pollution, too.
