2. Debe medirse al final de la espiración
3. El paciente debe estar en decúbito supino
4. El cero se determina a nivel de la cresta iliaca / línea axilar media
5. Antes de su medida se deben instilar 25 ml de suero salino fisiológico
6. La medición debe realizarse entre 30-60 segundos tras la instilación del suero fisiológico , para permitir que se relaje el músculo detrusor de la vejiga
7. Se debe registrar en ausencia de contracciones abdominales .

En marzo de 1984, en el Hospital San Juan de Dios, de Bogotá, capital de Colombia, el equipo médico a cargo de un paciente sometido a varias cirugías por graves lesiones en el hígado, sangrado e infecciones, carecía de material para cubrir los órganos del abdomen, hasta que fuera posible cerrarlo.Tan precaria era la situación del centro hospitalario que no se disponía siquiera de una malla, dispositivo ideal para colocarlo sin tocar la pared de la cavidad abdominal, pero muy costoso y fuera del alcance del colectivo de galenos y mucho menos del necesitado, un joven mecánico a quien un automóvil le había caído encima.Uno de los integrantes del equipo médico, el residente de segundo año en cirugía, el doctor Oswaldo Borráez tomó una decisión que revolucionaría la cirugía abdominal: cerró esa parte del cuerpo con un material flexible, resistente, y a mano en cualquiera sala de un hospital: la bolsa para sueros.
