And true to form, the firm will be staging a series of eventsthroughout 2011 to celebrate this, its 125th anniversary—a celebration thatbegan on January 29 with the presence of German Chancellor AngelaMerkel, along with guests from around the world.Simultaneously, just 100 km from where Mr. Benz was achieving his feat,Swabian businessman and inventor Gottlieb Daimler was successfully atwork on his own horseless carriage, which he completed that same year.Both men would have to wait a few years, however, in order to glean anyeconomy benefit from their inventions.Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AGand Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, says: “The systematic advancement ofideas, the determination to keep improving and the firm belief in one’s ownsuccess, were not just outstanding qualities of Daimler AG’s founders; 125years later, these same traits continue to form the unshakable foundation ofthe company’s philosophy today and point the way ahead for the future.”
