.the magazineA new year full of hopes is coming and Macaronesia —besides

the New Year— celebrates its first birthday. They have been

12 months of hard work, with some complicated challenges,

but most of all full of satisfactions.Today, one year later, we

still feel the support of your compliments. You still read us

and take part in this project whose only reason to exist is all

of you; this makes us feel a pride that our eyes reflect. Thank

you, thank you, a thousand times thank you….

This month of January we are starting another long path and

we wish, most of all, you to make it with us, because this

corner of La Macaronesia still has lots of things to find out.

Empieza un nuevo año lleno de ilusiones, y Macaronesia —a

parte del Año Nuevo— celebra su 1er Aniversario. Han sido

unos meses de trabajo duro, con algunos retos complicados

pero, sobre todo, con muchas satisfacciones. Hoy, un año

después de todo, seguimos recibiendo vuestro aliento en forma

de felicitaciones. Continuáis leyéndonos y participando de este

proyecto cuya principal razón de ser sois todos vosotros; y esto

nos llena de un orgullo que cristaliza en nuestros ojos. Gracias,

gracias y mil veces gracias...

En este mes de enero comenzamos otro largo camino y, por

encima de todo, deseamos que lo recorráis con nosotros,

porque este rincón de la Macaronesia sigue teniendo muchas

cosas que descubrirnos.

su importancia política y administrativa durante siglos, re-

sistiendo incluso a los intentos de invasión berberisca que

prácticamente arrasaron la capital a mediados del S. XVI.

Sin embargo, con la entrada del sigo XIX su poder econó-

mico fue bajando en beneficio de otras poblaciones que

crecían más rápidamente, como La Oliva o Pájara, hasta

que actualmente es uno del los núcleos urbanos de Fuer-

teventura que menos población tiene.

A comienzos del S. XVIII se traslada el gobierno militar a La

Oliva, marcando así la primera brecha en el monopolio po-

lítico que constituía Betancuria, pero no es hasta el s. XIX

cuando las trasformaciones económicas, sociales, adminis-

trativas, religiosas y políticas —debidas a la disolución del

Antiguo Régimen y coincidiendo con el despegue econó-

.BETANCURIAEn 1402 la Isla de Fuerteventura fue invadida por el

francés Jean de Bethencourt (noble de origen normando

que entró en contacto con la corona de Castilla a través

de un pariente y consiguió el derecho de conquista de

las Islas). Pero no fue hasta dos años después cuando

Fuerteventura es por fin conquistada.

En 1404 empieza formalmente la colonización; se creó

para ello una capital, fundada por el militar Gadifer de

la Salle —que acompañaba a Jean de Bethencourt en la

conquista— y por el propio Bethencourt, cuya figura se-

ría honrada al dar nombre a la nueva capital, Betancuria;

situada en una de las zonas más fértiles del interior —un

valle muy verde y resguardado de los vientos—, menos

vulnerable y más protegida de los frecuentes ataques pira-

tas que sufrían las costas de la Isla.

Este lugar había sido uno de los primeros asentamientos

de la Isla cuando sus pobladores aún eran los guanches.

Desde su fundación se convirtió en capital y centro rector

de la Isla y en ella radicaron históricamente los órganos de

administración y gobierno insulares. Betancuria conservó

mico del área oriental de la Isla— debilitan el poder de

Betancuria en favor de otros núcleos como Pájara, La oliva,

Antigua o Puerto de Cabras (actual Puerto del Rosario).

Betancuria dejó de ser parroquia única de la Isla (siglo XVIII),

cuando se crearon las parroquias de Nuestra Señora de Re-

gla (Pájara) y Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria (La Oliva).

En 1834 se crea el municipio de Puerto de Cabras, inde-

pendiente de Tetir, y poco a poco se van instalando allí las

distintas instituciones de la administración y el gobierno,

convirtiéndolo en capital en 1860.

A día de hoy, Betancuria, con menos de 700 habitantes, es

un atractivo turístico por la belleza de la zona y del pueblo,

ya que sigue siendo uno de los más bonitos de la Isla, cuyo

histórico poder aún se ve reflejado en sus calles.

In 1402 Fuerteventura was invaded by the French nobleman

Jean de Bethencourt (Norman from origin, he got in touch

with the Castilian crown through a relative and he got the

right to conquer the islands). However it wasn’t until two

years later that Fuerteventura was finally conquered.

In 1404 colonization starts properly; with this purpose

a capital was founded by the military man Gadifer de

la Salle —who accompanied Jean de Bethencourt in the

conquest— and by Bethencourt himself, whose figure

would be honoured when the capital was named after

him: Betancuria, placed in one of the most fertile areas

inland —a green valley, sheltered from the winds— less

vulnerable and more sheltered from the frequent pirate

attacks the island’s coasts used to suffer.

This place had been one of the first settlements in this

island, when their inhabitants were the Guanches.

From its foundation it became a capital and the governing

centre of this island, and all the administrative and governing

organisms of this island were historically settled there.

Betancuria kept its political and administrative importance for

centuries, resisting several attempts of Berber invasions that

devastated the capital in the middle of the XVI C. However, at

the beginning of the XIX C its economical power was decreasing

in favour of other populations that were quickly growing, such

was the case of La Oliva and Pájara, until it became one of the

less populated urban areas in Fuerteventura.

At the beginning of the XVIII C the military government

moves to La Oliva, which meant the beginning of the end

of the political monopoly that Betancuria enjoyed. But it

wasn’t until the XIX C that economical, social, administrative,

religious and political changes —due to the fall of the Old

Regime and the economic boom of the eastern side of the

island— weaken Betancuria’s power in favour of other

urban centres like Pájara, La Oliva, Antigua or Puerto de

Cabras (Puerto del Rosario nowadays).

Betancuria stopped being the only parish in the island

(XVIII C) when those of Nuestra Señora de Regla (Pájara) and

Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria (La Oliva) were created.

In 1834 the municipality of Puerto de Cabras is set up,

independent from Tetir, and little by little the different

institutions of the administration and the government get

settled there, thus becoming the capital in 1860.

Nowadays Betancuria, with less than 700 inhabitants, is a

touristic attraction because of its beauty, as it keeps being

one of the most beautiful villages in this island, whose

historical power is still reflected in some of its buildings.

que se empezó a construir en los primeros años de funda-

ción de Betancuria, para cubrir las necesidades espirituales

de los isleños (el 10% de todo lo que se producía en agricul-

tura se entregaba a la iglesia, y el 20% al gobernador de la

isla). Esta iglesia-catedral, de estilo gótico-normando, sufrió

los ataques berberiscos y tuvo que ser reconstruida en el

siglo XVII, aunque aún conserva algunos restos de aquella

primera iglesia, como el campanario o algunas columnas

y, siendo dignos de mención, su baptisterio, el coro y un

artesonado mudéjar.

Church-Cathedral of Santa MaríaIt’s one of the main buildings in this historical capital that

started to be built during the first years of the founding

of Betancuria to cover the spiritual needs of the islanders.

(The 10% of the agricultural production was given to

the church, and the 20%, to the island’s governor). This

Norman-gothic style Church-Cathedral suffered some

Berber attacks and had to be rebuilt in the XVII C., though

it still keeps some remains of the first church, like the

belfry and some columns and, also worth mentioning, its

baptistery, choir, and a Mudejar coffered ceiling.

The Hermitage of San Diego

Another characteristic feature of Betancuria is its hermitage,

similar —regarding the stone and the whitewashing—

to the cathedral. Beside it we find the remains of the

Franciscan convent that together with the hermitage were

originally a part of the first Franciscan convent founded in

the Canary Islands.

The Lovers es el nombre que le han dado a esta

inseparable pareja de windsurfers. Bueno, en realidad lo

del windsurf sólo define una de sus pasiones, quizás la

más grande, pero no la única, ya que estos «enamorados»

han dedicado su vida en cuerpo y alma a los deportes:

windsurfing, surfing, stand up paddling, y actualmente,

para seguir aprendiendo y buscando nuevos retos, alaia

(surfing con tabla de madera sin quillas). Desde muy

pequeñita Nicole destacó en el mundo del skate, llegando

a ser campeona de Francia. Por aquel entonces la cultura

skater iba de la mano con el surf, así que Nicole no tardó

mucho en interesarse por los deportes de agua. Nació

en Francia, pero pronto emigró con su familia a Argelia,

por temas de trabajo; y es a los 16 años cuando vuelven

a mudarse al sur de Francia, donde conoce a Stephane

(nacido y criado en Túnez). Stephane siempre vivió cerca

del mar y desde muy pequeño empezó su afición por

todo lo relacionado con él. Con 16 años hizo un curso de

salvavidas en Biarritz y a los 20, junto con Nicole, deciden

viajar a Tarifa en busca de su sueño: ser unos pros del

windsurf. Es innegable que la carrera de estas dos grandes

figuras brilla con luz propia por separado, pero algo que

los ha hecho verdaderamente especiales es la simbiosis

que han encontrado el uno con el otro, su manera de

ver la vida y su pasión por el deporte. Han llegado al

top en muchas disciplinas y hoy en día, un poco más

separados del mundo de la competición, siguen viajando

para encontrar olas, culturas y paraísos soñados en su

incansable búsqueda de la libertad y la aventura.

.Stephane Etienne & Nicole Boronat: the Lovers

The Lovers is the name this inseparable couple of windsurfers has been given. Well, the truth is that the windsurf

is just one of their passions, maybe the greatest, but not the only one, as these «lovers» have completely devoted

their lives to sports: windsurfing, surfing, stand up paddling, and at present, to go on learning and looking for new

challenges, alaia (surfing with a wooden board without keels). Since she was very young Nicole stood up in the

world of skate, becoming a champion in France. By then, the skater’s culture went hand in hand with surfers’, so

very soon afterwards Nicole got interested in water sports. She was born in France, but very soon she emigrated

with her family to Argelia, for job reasons, and when she was 16 they returned to the south to France, and there

she met Stephane (born and brought up in Túnez). Stephane had always lived by the sea, and from a very early

age he was interested in everything related to it. Being 16 he took a course on lifeguard in Biarritz, and when he

was 20, together with Nicole, they decide to travel to Tarifa in search of their dream: becoming windsurf pros. It

can’t be denied that the careers of these two figures stand out on their own separately, but if something has made

them special it has been the symbiosis they have found in each other, their way of understanding life and their

passion for sports. They have reached the top of a lot of disciplines and, nowadays, a little further from the world

of competitions, they go on travelling to find waves, cultures and dreamed paradises in their tireless search for

freedom and adventure.

¿Por qué Fuerteventura? En 1988 vinimos al sur de la isla a

un evento organizado por René Egli. Nos enamoramos del

potencial de Fuerteventura y —aunque en aquellos mo-

mentos vivir aquí no era sencillo si tenías que viajar cada

dos por tres— supimos que algún día estableceríamos aquí

nuestro campamento base; y así ocurrió hace 10 años. Ve-

mos en esta isla un terreno de juego casi ilimitado, con

kms. de playa virgen y spots aún por descubrir.

¿Seguís compitiendo? Ahora a un nivel mucho más relajado...

Seguimos participando en algunos campeonatos; por ejem-

plo, en SUP este año Stephane fue Sub campeon de Europa

en Racing y campeón de España en Olas; y yo 3ª de Europa.

Siempre hemos disfrutado compitiendo, pero en la actualidad,

si vamos a las competiciones, es más por ver a gente y seguir

aprendiendo que por los títulos. Estamos contentos de todo lo

que hemos conseguido, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que

nunca hemos tenido preparadores ni managers, y lo que he-

mos aprendido lo hemos sacado de la escuela de la vida, de la

familia, de los amigos cercanos (saben quienes son)...

Lo bueno de practicar tantos deportes... Que no estás eti-

quetado y que cuando vuelves a practicar uno de los depor-

tes que llevas semanas sin practicar te sientes más fresco.

Todos los deportes que hacemos son complementarios, así

que practicar uno de ellos te hace desarrollar habilidades

importantes para los demás. Además te dejas llevar por las

condiciones del día para elegir el más adecuando; aunque

a veces es un dilema tener todo el material cargado en la

furgoneta y tener que decidir qué hacemos, jajaja.

Alguna situación de riesgo... Algo de adrenalina siempre

hay —cuenta que nos encantan las olas grandes— y cada

día es una experiencia nueva, pero confiamos

en nuestra forma física y además no estamos

locos y siempre evaluamos los riesgos. Aún así

te puedes llevar sustos grandes, pero disfruta-

mos aprendiendo cada día un poquito más.

¿Cuándo descansáis? Nunca, jajaja... A veces

estamos viniendo de surfear y ya nos están

llamando porque hay viento para navegar en

Majanicho, y allá que nos vamos, comiendo un

bocadillo por el camino. Y los días que el mar

está plato aprovechamos para ir a pescar.

Un destino recomendado, de vuestro largo ba-

gaje. Para el wind surf una ola increíble es Punta

Preta, en Cabo Verde, aunque son pocos lo días

al año que funciona en plenas condiciones, pero

es impresionante. Como destino mágico, mez-

cla de surf y una cultura muy diferente, el sur

de la India; nos dejó realmente sorprendidos.

Y por proximidad, por su comida ex quisita, por

sus paisajes, su cultura y artesanía: Marruecos.

Stephane, háblanos del Invitacional de Fuerte-

ventura del 2009... Fue la 1ª edición del FWC,

y para mí fue épico. Además de que gané,

las condiciones de La Puntilla fueron inmejo-

rables, estaba enorme y perfecto. En toda mi

vida sólo la he visto así dos veces y una de ellas

cuadró con el invitacional, ¡increíble!

Nicole, ¿cómo es este mundo para una mujer?

Como en casi todo, nos cuesta el doble de

esfuerzo que a los hombres conseguir las co-

sas, empezando por los patrocinadores; pero

siempre me he sentido muy bien acogida en el

mundo de los deportes en general.

Un abrazo desde Macaronesia para esta pare-

ja encantadora que, además de disfrutar del

océano en todo su esplendor, son unos defen-

sores del mismo y participan activamente de su

conservación y limpieza.©20

Why Fuerteventura? In 1988 we came to the south of the

island because of an event organized by René Egli. We

fell in love with Fuerteventura’s potential and —although

at those times living here was not easy if you had to be

constantly travelling— we could feel that some day we

would end up settling here; and thus it happened 10

years ago. We consider this island as an unlimited playing

field, having kilometres of virgin beaches and spots to be

discovered yet.

Do you still take part in competitions? Now, at a much more

relaxed level... we still take part in some championships;

for example, in SUP, Stephane was Europe runner up in

racing, and Spanish champion in waves; and I got the third

position in Europe. We have always enjoyed competitions,

but nowadays if we go to competitions is rather to meet

people and go on learning than to get titles. We are happy

about everything we have achieved, mainly taking into

account we have never had trainers or managers, and that

we have learnt everything at the school of life, family and

close friends (you know who they are)...

Good points about practising so many sports... That they

can’t pigeonhole you, and when you practise one of the

sports you haven’t been practising for some weeks you

feel fresher. All the sports we practise complement one

another, so practising one of them makes you develop

important skills for the rest of them. Moreover, depending

on the weather conditions you can choose the most

suitable sport; although sometimes it’s a dilemma to have

all the equipment in the van and to have to decide which

one we should practise, ha, ha, ha!

Any risky situations.... Adrenaline is always present —bear

in mind we love big waves— and every day is a new

experience, but we trust our fitness and we are sensible,

we always evaluate risks. Even so you can get big frights,

but we enjoy learning a little bit more every day.

When do you have a rest? Never, ha, ha, ha... Sometimes

we are returning from surfing and we are being called

because there is wind in Majanicho, and there we go,

having a sandwich on the way there; and the days the sea

is very calmed we go fishing.

A recommended destiny in your large experience. For

windsurf, an incredible wave is Punta Preta, in Cape Verde,

although there are just a few days in the whole year when

it works properly, but it’s really impressive. As a magical

destiny, mixing surf with a very different culture, the south

of India, it really surprised us; and taking into account its

proximity, delicious food and craftsmanship, Morocco.

Stephane, tell us about the Invitational of Fuerteventura in

the year 2009... It was the first occasion of FWC, and it was

a milestone to me: not only did I win, but the conditions in

La Puntilla were unbeatable as well. It was enormous and

perfect. I have only seen it like this twice in my whole life,

and one of them was at this invitational, amazing!

Nicole, what is this world like for a woman? As usual in

El fin de semana del 11 y 12 de diciembre tuvo lugar, en la playa de El Hierro de Fuerteven-

tura, la IV Prueba del Circuito Nacional de Surf Open, que contó con la categoría Sub21

del Circuito Junior de Canarias.

A pesar de las complicadas condiciones —fuerte viento, olas de tan solo 1m.—, el espec-

táculo no se vio mermado y, en las diferentes mangas que se disputaron, se pudo presen-

ciar la buena forma de los casi 60 competidores, destacando a los deportistas canarios,

que se hacían con el triunfo en 3 de las 5 categorías.

A pesar de que muchos opinan que este tipo de eventos favorece el desarrollo del surf en la

isla, un pequeño grupo de locales asaltaron el agua el primer día de la prueba, como acto

reivindicativo, para reclamar la atención de la Federación Canaria de Surf hacia los depor-

tistas locales. Piden más información sobre la realización de estas pruebas, para fomentar

así la participación de un mayor número de surfistas majoreros. Por su parte, la Federación

Canaria de Surf responde a estas reclamaciones explicando que hasta 2007 existía en Fuer-

teventura el Club Marea Azul, y sus colaboraciones eran excelentes; pero a partir de ese año

el club perdió fuerza y ahora no tienen una asociación majorera con la que contactar para

la realización de los campeonatos. De todas maneras están abiertos a colaboraciones en un

futuro; todo lo que sea necesario para fomentar el surf en este paraíso acuático.

On the weekend of the 11th and 12th of December the IV event of the National Circuit

of Surf Open took place in El Hierro, Fuerteventura, and it counted on the the sub-21

category of the Junior circuit in Canarias.

Despite the difficult conditions —strong wind, just 1m. high waves— the show was

crowded, and in the different rounds we could witness how fit the almost 60 participants

were. We must enhance the local sportsmen, who stood out in three out of the five

categories.

Although a lot of people think that this kind of events helps the development of surfing

in this island, a little group of locals encroached upon the water the very first day in

protest, in order to attract the attention of the «Federación Canaria de Surf» towards local

sportsmen. They were demanding more information about this kind of events in order to

promote the participation of a bigger number of local surfers. «La Federación Canaria

de surf» answered that up to 2007 «El club Marea Azul» existed in Fuerteventura, and

their collaborations were excellent. From then onwards the club lost strength and now

there isn’t a majorera association they can contact for the organization of championships.

Anyway they are open to collaborations in the future, and to anything which is necessary

to promote surfing in this water paradise.

Mambrú nunca regresó, por mucho que

se empeñe Benedetti en un instante

desesperado por retener la esperan-

za en la caja de Pandora. Y es que

Mambrú se quedó en los sueños, en

las bocas de los niños, en el recuerdo de la infancia

que un día acunaremos.

El Mambrú del otro lado del charco, se batía en

selvas, bajo lluvias de Macondo y Llanos en llamas,

creciendo sin envejecer, de una guerra a otra, de

generación en generación. Mi Mambrú se quedó

exiliado, parado en el tiempo de una historia robada a

base de borrones en los libros de historia, de historia

inventada por quien se llevó a Mambrú a la guerra.

Canción de cuna desesperada y triste que cantaba

mi abuela para espantar el miedo, que cantaban los

grises para meterlo.

El Mambrú indiano lleva gorro de copa, casaca

inglesa de botones dorados y un fusil al hombro con

cuchillo, clavadito al del soldadito de plomo. Pequeño

y gallardo se aleja por el camino de tierra con su

petate a la espalda. En las imágenes de mi infancia,

Mambrú se aleja con el verde militar descolorido de

un ejército desgastado y sin recursos. Mochila vacía

con un mendrugo de pan y una foto de la novia que

nunca será esposa, que vestirá de negro muchos años

y cantará el «cara al sol» para evitar la cárcel por un

novio republicano. Mambrú no lleva casco, ni gorro

que lo proteja del sol en las mañanas de verano, ni

del frío en las de invierno, sucia camisa que pronto se

manchará de sangre.

Atravesando selvas, pampas inmensas, ríos de oro y

tinta en los libros, Mambrú lucha por salvar la vida

dentro de un círculos de revueltas, batallas, matanzas

interminables, sin sentido, como todas las guerras.

Al otro lado del charco, en este lado del charco, en la

tierra de los conquistadores, Mambrú aún no ha sido

conquistado, aún cree en los sueños. En sueños por los

que lucha, por los que mata, por los que muere. Sonríe

a la luz de las canciones que entonan los compañeros.

Mambrú nunca estará solo. A pesar de la distancia, de

la cruda sangría que le aparta de todo lo amado, Mam-

brú tiene en quien apoyarse cuando llega la añoranza,

tiene en quien llorar cuando las balas aprietan las

trincheras, cuando el cielo se vuelve oscuro de pólvora

y dolor, tiene con quien reír compartiendo los escasos

mendrugos duros de madrugadas.

Empapados los huesos y secos de golpes de caciques,

Mambrú deambula mutilando, mutilando selva con

paso errático perdido en la miseria de mil guerras

perdidas. Perdida también la guerra, el Mambrú de

paisano continúa la humillación que siglo tras siglos

su hermano de las Américas ha ido padeciendo, pero

aún le quedan muchas más.

A ambos lados las humillaciones continúan, por eso

Mambrú no quiere volver, tiene miedo de que lo man-

den otra vez a la guerra, tiene miedo de que todo se

haya convertido en guerra. A Mambrú, el de aquí y el haya convertido en guerra. A Mambrú, el de aquí y el

de allá, le aterra la derrota y es que gane quien gane, de allá, le aterra la derrota y es que gane quien gane,

ya nadie gana, sólo existen vencidos.ya nadie gana, sólo existen vencidos.

la Isla, son un auténtico basurero. Los barrenderos sólo

limpian las calles asfaltadas, pero no estas zonas que,

además, están minadas de mierdas de perros que sus

dueños dejan. Es una vergüenza de cara al turismo y a

nosotros mismos.

island, are a real rubbish dump. The street sweepers

clean only asphalted streets, not these areas that

furthermore are full of dog mess that their owners

leave there. This is a shame regarding tourism and

ourselves.

para nosotros. Nos multan, nos quitan los patines y el ska-

Despues de más de 24h. de vuelo la llegada a Sydney te

coje un poco atontado; entre el viaje y el jet-lag, necesitas

más de 3 días para recuperarte del todo, pero el lugar

merece el esfuerzo.

Además de ser una ciudad impresionante, tanto por su ar-

quitectura y contrastes como por la facilidad para hacerte

con ella —como buenos británicos, todo funciona perfecta-

mente: horarios de transporte al segundo, formas de pago,

monorraíl, ferrys, cajeros, parkings, etc…—, todo está per-

fectamente organizado y pensado para hacerte la vida más

fácil y práctica. El choque arquitectónico es brutal; imponen-

tes edificios Victorianos al lado de edificios ultramodernos

de acero y cristal, o incluso alguna construcción de época,

decorada con graffitties o murales espectaculares… ¡Una

ciudad sin complejos!

La ciudad es un vergel de multiculturalidad; hay desde un

Chinatown hasta una calle de Spanish-tapas; barrios de to-

das las etnias que os podáis imaginar: comunidad libanesa,

pakistaní, india, polaca,… en fin, un país construido y desa-

rrollado por emigrantes de todos los rincones del mundo.

Resulta increíble pensar que Australia fue descubierta un

poco antes de 1800 y que, en solo 200 y pico años, hayan

conseguido construir y desarrollar uno de los países más or-

ganizados y modernos del mundo.

El pueblo australiano es sorprendente, tanto por su forma

de vida como por su forma de ser. Todo el mundo parece

feliz y para cualquier cosa te recibirán con una sonrisa y mu-

chísima educación; están muy orgullosos de su país y, como

el turismo es una parte importante de su economía, se nota

que lo tienen muy en cuenta. Hay actividades de todos los

gustos y colores, desde excursiones a las Blue Mountains,

paseos en lancha rápida, surf, vela, alquiler de coches clási-

cos, «whatever you want»…, pero lo mejor es alquilarte un

coche y ponerte a conducir: los paisajes son espectaculares.

Es la combinación perfecta entre desarrollo y sostenibilidad,

la ciudad es enorme y superextensa pero debido a su mor-

fología y su buen clima está plagada de zonas verdes y mar,

con paseos marítimos, playas... En 20 minutos te puedes salir

del Downtown y darte un bañito en Manly o Valmoral, y al

terminar comerte una langosta de la zona con «chips» (sí,

sí, ¡langosta con papas locas!), para mí fue como tener New

York incrustado en una Isla de la Polinesia, más o menos.

La gente se cuida mucho y hay una gran cultura deportiva

y también de desarrollo espiritual; está lleno de asiáticos y

han sabido adaptar muchas de las cosas buenas de las cul-

turas orientales —casi me salen branquias de comer tanto

sushi, está por todas partes mmhhh—.

Pero el tema del deporte merece una mención especial. Es

muy difícil ver gente con sobrepeso —parece un tópico pero

es verdad, como lo de que el agua gira al revés en el lavama-

nos, ¡también es verdad!, lo he comprobado—. Está todo

lleno de barcos de vela, puertitos deportivos, playas para

hacer surf, carriles bici y zonas de ejercicio por todas partes;

la gente se cuida mucho —hasta el fast-food es bueno—.

La calidad de vida es su principal motivación, ya sea a nivel

individual o colectivo.

A parte de lo que os he contado, es muy curioso el tema

de la fauna. En plena ciudad verás pasar volando Cacatúas

de colores y oirás gruñidos extraños saliendo de los árbo-

les en plena avenida, en el Opera house y en Central Park:

al oscurecer se llenan de murciélagos, ¡pero murciélagos

de 35 kg. y 2 m. de envergadura!; parecen chimpancés

voladores. Dan hasta miedo, aunque son inofensivos.

Sidney, una ciudad impresionante, un lugar para vivir.

Besides being an impressive city, not just because of its

architecture and contrasts but because of how easy it is to

get used to it —like in any typical British city everything works

perfectly: transport schedules, payment conditions, monorail,

ferries, cashiers, parking, etc...— everything is perfectly

organized, thought to make life easier and more practical.

The architectural contrast is tremendous: huge Victorian

buildings beside steel and glass ultramodern buildings, and

even some of the current buildings decorated with graffiti or

spectacular murals... A city without hang-ups!

The city is a multicultural garden; you find from a

Chinatown to a street of Spanish tapas; neighbourhoods

of all the ethnic groups you can imagine: Lebanese,

Pakistani, Indian, Polish.... in other words, a country built

and developed by emigrants from all over the world. It’s

just incredible to think that Australia was discovered a

little before the year 1800, and that in just a little bit more

than 200 years it has managed to become one of the most

modern and organized countries in the world.

The Australian people are amazing, because of their life style

and character. Everybody seems to be happy and they will

always welcome you with a smile and in a very polite way; they

are proud of their country, and as tourism is a very important

part of their economy they always bear it in mind. There are

activities for all the tastes: trips to the Blue Mountains, rides

on speedboats, surf, sailing, renting of classic cars, whatever

you want...but the best option is to rent a car and drive: the

landscapes are spectacular. It’s the perfect combination of

development and sustainability; the city is huge and vast, but

due to its shape and good weather it’s full of green areas

and sea, seafronts, beaches.... In twenty minutes you can get

out of downtown and have a bath in Manly or Valmoral,

and afterwards you can have a fresh lobster with chips (yes,

«langosta con papas locas»). It was almost like having New

York embedded in a Polynesian island.

People look after themselves, and there is a culture of sports,

and of spiritual development; it’s full of Asian people, so this

country has managed to adopt the good features of the

oriental culture —I was about to develop gills after eating so

much sushi, it’s everywhere, yummy!—.

But sports deserve a special comment. It’s very difficult to

see overweight people —it seems to be a cliché but it’s

true, like the fact that water runs anti-clockwise around

the washbasin, I can confirm it—. It’s all surrounded by

sailing boats, marinas, surf beaches, bike lanes, sport

areas ; people look after themselves, —even the fast-

food is healthy—. Life quality is their main motivation,

either at an individual level or as a group.

Apart from all the things I have already told, the fauna

is also very interesting. You can see colour cockatoos

overflying the city and hear funny grunts coming from

the trees in the middle of the avenues, in the Opera

house and in Central Park: at dusk it gets full of bats,

but really heavy bats (around 35kg) and with a really

large wingspan (around 2m); they look like flying

chimpanzees. They may even frighten you, although

they are harmless.

In short, it’s an impressive city, a place to live in.

En pleno pueblo de Lajares, nos encontramos un hogar al puro estilo tailandés. Sito y Sibille, los propietarios, comenzaron hace ya dos años con la construcción de esta casa, y aunque aún no la ven del todo acabada, ya pueden disfrutar cómodamente de ella. Partieron de un proyecto ya elaborado pero fueron variando todo lo que creyeron conveniente para conseguir crear su propio espacio, con un toque personal y artesanal muy característico.

Right in the village of Lajares, we find a home built in the purest Thai style. Sito and Sibile, its owners, started this project two years ago, and although it’s not finished yet they can already enjoy its comforts. They started with an elaborated project, but then they added all the necessary modifications to create their own home, with a very characteristic personal and handcrafted touch.

Se trata de una casa de tres plantas: la de abajo —el

garaje— pronto se convertirá en un precioso loft; la

planta central —propiamente el hogar de la fami-

lia— se caracteriza por tener un amplio y espaciado

salón-cocina-comedor, de grandes ventanales, y una

acogedora terraza desde la que se observa, a lo lejos,

la montaña Sagrada de Tindaya; la planta superior es

un bonito apartamento, con entrada independiente, y

con otra amplia terraza orientada al lado opuesto, con

vistas tanto al volcán de Calderón Hondo de Lajares

como a las montañas de La Oliva.

Lo más especial y llamativo de la casa son sus muebles

y sus adornos; todos ellos traídos de Tailandia, incluso la

madera del suelo y los techos. Adornos de bronce, sillas y

mesas que fueron antaño instrumentos de labranza, cuya

madera ha sido reciclada. Las lámparas, todas diferentes y

muy creativas, llaman la atención por su diseño y los espa-

cios que crean con su luz. Pero, sin lugar a dudas, lo que

realmente llama la atención es que alguien que nunca ha

estado relacionado con el mundo de la construcción haya

sido capaz de levantar esta casa, con todos los detalles y

la comodidad necesarios. Es Sito, su propietario, quién

finalmente está construyendo su propio hogar, inspirado

en el mundo asiático que tanto gusta a esta familia.

Thailand, even the wood for ceilings and floors. Bronze

complements, chairs and tables that were farming

implements in the old times and whose wood has been

recycled. The lamps, all of them different and very creative,

have a striking design that allows their light to have a

special effect on the space. But, what it’s really amazing

is the fact that someone who has never had anything to

do with the world of building has been able to erect this

house with all the necessary details and comforts. It’s Sito,

its owner, who is building his own home, inspired by the

Asiatic world that this family likes so much.

We are talking about a three-storey house: the bottom

one —the garage— will soon become a wonderful loft;

the central one —really the family home— has a wide

and spacious American kitchen with large windows

and a cosy terrace with views (in the distance) to the

Holy Mountain of Tindaya; the top floor is a beautiful

independent apartment, with a wide terrace facing the

opposite side, with views to the volcano of Calderón

Hondo in Lajares and to the mountains in La Oliva.

The most special and striking features in this house are

its furniture and complements; all of them taken from

.Ecología I Ecology

En el número anterior hablamos de los diferentes tipos de residuos como un punto

de partida para ayudar al ciudadano en el proceso del reciclaje. A continuación os

presentaremos una breve descripción de los diferentes contenedores y de la gestión de los

desechos, una vez han sido seleccionados y empaquetados en el Complejo Ambiental de

Zurita, en Puerto del Rosario.

El contenedor verde: sirve para depositar vidrio. Para su reco-

gida se requiere eliminar las tapas y tapones, para agilizar el

proceso. El reciclaje de vidrio es considerado uno de los más

fáciles —pues las características del material resultan fácil-

mente recuperables y se puede reciclar tantas veces como

queramos sin perder sus cualidades óptimas— y uno de los

más importantes, debido a que es el residuo que más tarda

en desaparecer (4000 años). En el caso de Fuerteventura,

tras el tratamiento previo, los vidrios acumulados son en-

viados a Gran Canaria ya que allí se ubica la única planta

de reciclaje de vidrio del archipiélago (Vidrieras Canarias).

SÍ VIDRIO: botellas y tarros de vidrio, frascos de con-

servas, tarros de cosmética y perfumería.

NO CRISTAL: lunas de automóviles, bombillas, espe-

jos, ventanas, fluorescentes… Estos son de cristal

(contiene plomo) y deben depositarse en puntos

limpios o centros de recogida.

El contenedor azul: sirve para depositar papel y cartón,

materiales reciclables 100%. Para su recogida es impor-

tante eliminar cualquier elemento extraño (grapas, cintas

adhesivas, plásticos,...). Son los menos contaminantes

(se degradan en un año), pero su reciclaje es muy impor-

tante ya que gracias a él se reduce considerablemente

la tala de árboles y el consumo de energía (cada tone-

lada de papel que se recicla evita que se talen 12 ó 13

árboles, que se gasten 0,5 toneladas menos de petróleo

y que se emitan 1,5 toneladas de CO2 menos que en la

producción del papel normal). Por todos estos motivos

¿no es curioso que a la hora de comprar un paquete de

folios reciclados el precio sea considerablemente mayor

que el del papel normal? En Fuerteventura, tras ser com-

pactados y empaquetados en balas (de unos 300kg.) en

Zurita, se envían, vía marítima, a la península.

SÍ: periódicos, revistas, propaganda, cajas y envases

de cartón, bolsas de papel.

NO: briks, pañales, cartones y papeles sucios (con res-

tos de comida, como el caso de las cajas de pizza) o so-

metidos a tratamientos especiales (encerados, platifi-

cados, con aluminio…). Estos residuos pasan a formar

parte de la basura doméstica que será enterrada.

RESIDUOS Y RECICLAJE II

such as staples, adhesive tape, plastics... should be

removed. Card and paper are the least polluting waste

(they would decompose in one year), but their recycling

is very important as thanks to it tree felling and energy

consumption can be reduced (every ton of recycled paper

avoids the felling of 12, 13 trees, 0,5 tons of petrol, as well

as the emission of 1,5 tons of CO2 that the usual process

of producing paper entails). For all these reasons, isn’t it

strange the fact that the packet of recycled A4 paper is

considerably more expensive than that of normal paper?

In Fuerteventura, after the waste has been crushed and

packed in Zurita (300kg per parcel) it’s sent as seafreight

to the peninsula.

Yes: newspapers, magazines, flyers, small boxes, card

containers, paper bags.

No: cartons, nappies, dirty paper (pizza boxes with leftovers)

or paper that has undergone a special treatment (waxed,

laminated, with aluminium....). This waste should be part

of the household waste that will be buried.

The green container: it’s used to throw away glass. Corks,

wires, labels... should be removed in order to speed up the

process. The recycling of glass is considered as one of the

easiest ones, as the characteristics of this material are easy

to recover and it can be recycled as often as we like without

losing its optimum quality. It’s also one of the most important

recycling processes, as it’s the waste that takes longer to

decompose (4000 years). In the case of Fuerteventura, after

a previous treatment, the collected glass is sent to Gran

Canaria, as there we find the only existing recycling plant in

the archipelago (Vidriera de Canarias).

Yes: bottles and jars, (also from jarred food, cosmetics

and perfumes).

No Crystal: windshields, bulbs, mirrors, window panes,

fluorescent lighting... (they must be taken to drop-off

centres).

The blue container: it’s used to throw away paper and

card, 100% recyclable materials. Any other materials

WASTE AND RECYCLING IIIn our previous issue we were talking about the

different kinds of waste as a starting point to

help the citizens in the recycling process. Now we

will introduce a small description of the different

containers and the management of this waste

once it has been classified and packed in the

“Complejo Ambiental de Zurita”, in Puerto del

Rosario.

El contenedor amarillo: sirve para depositar envases. El

problema que trae consigo este tipo de residuos es el

tiempo que tardan en degradarse y la dificultad que re-

presenta su clasificación, ya que existen más de 50 tipos

diferentes de plásticos (sólo reciclables algunos) y muchos

envases están hechos con más de uno. Es recomendable

limpiarlos y aplastarlos, para reducir su volumen, antes de

tirarlos al contenedor. En Zurita, estos residuos se selec-

cionan, se embalan y se envían a la península.

SÍ: envases metálicos (latas de bebidas, conservas,

chapas —10 años en degradarse—, aerosoles —30

años—, platos y bandejas de aluminio), briks —30

años—, envases de plástico para la alimentación y para

el aseo y la limpieza —más de 100 años—, bolsas y en-

voltorios de plástico y aluminio —más de 150 años—.

NO: juguetes (el plástico de las muñecas no se re-

cicla), electrodomésticos, biberones, guantes de

goma, utensilios de cocina, cajas de fruta, cubos de

plástico y pilas. Estos deben llevarse al punto limpio.

Punto Limpio: centro donde se recogen, de forma gratuita,

los residuos domésticos —sólo de particulares— que no de-

ben depositarse en los contenedores de la calle. Las empre-

sas deben contactar con gestores para que les retiren los re-

siduos. En Fuerteventura existen tres puntos limpios: Lomo

del Jable (Lajares), Risco Prieto (Puerto del Rosario) y Fuente

Bartolo (Tuineje). Disponen de una zona para RSC (restos

de construcción y demolición, que se suelen utilizar para

enterrar la basura doméstica en los vertederos); otra para

restos de jardinería y poda limpia (sin mezclar con otro tipo

de residuos); una zona para la madera (cualquiera puede ir

al punto limpio a coger madera para hacer asaderos y de-

más); y otra para residuos electrónicos y electrodomésticos.

SÍ: metales, escombros (max. 60kg/día), muebles y

enseres, electrodomésticos, radiografías, fluorescen-

tes, pinturas, barnices y disolventes, aceite vegetal y

mineral, baterías, pilas, cartuchos de tinta, aerosoles,

basura electrónica y vidrio, papel carton y envases.

NO: medicamentos (se recogen en farmacias), res-

tos de comida, animales muertos (hay un servicio

gestionado por el cabildo), vehículos, materiales ex-

plosivos, residuos radiactivos, residuos infecciosos y

residuos agrícolas y ganaderos.

have an area for demolition rubble (used to bury the

household waste in rubbish dumps); another area for

gardening rubbish (not mixed with any other kind of

one for electronic waste and electrical appliances)

No: medicines (collected by chemists), leftovers, dead

animals, vehicles, explosives, radioactive waste, infectious

waste, and agricultural waste.

Historia de la compañíaLos diferentes espectáculo realizados por esta compañía,

a la dirección de Marina di Maio y con artistas colabora-

dores que han ido yendo y viniendo —algunos partici-

pando en varios de ellos, como Rocío y Lucía— son los

siguientes: «Orgánicos Entre Hilos» (2007), «Excéntrica

Isla» (2008), «Espacio en Movimiento» (2008), «Rescá-

tame» (2009) y «Los Separados» (2010).

Marina di Maio Funda la Compañía Lunaticart en 2007 y desde entonces

ha sido directora e intérprete de los diferentes proyectos

que ha desarrollado. Su formación en Teatro Musical le ha

llevado siempre a fusionar las artes. Además es realizado-

ra de video y ha dirigido cortometrajes cinematográficos.

Actualmente imparte clases de Danza Contemporánea,

aunque se considera cantante antes que actriz o bailarina.

Silvio LópezMúsico cubano que lleva 18 años en Fuerteventura, re-

cién cumplidos. Es profesor de la escuela insular de Mú-

sica y acaba de sacar un disco: «POR NATURALEZA».

Los días 3, 4 y 5 de Febrero, la Compañía Lunaticart

estrena «PURA MAGIA». El espectáculo en vivo cuenta

con siete artistas: Marina Di Maio —a la voz—, Silvio

López —al Piano y saxo—, Tomás Figueroa —a la

guitarra—, Milán Valdivia —al Bajo—, José Nobrega

—a la bateria—, y Lucía González Falcón y Rocío

the musical director of the work «Pura Magia», where he counts with the contributions

of his colleagues Tomás Figueroa, Milán Valdivia and José Nobrega.

Lucía González FalcónShe studied Classical and contemporary dance in Gran Canaria and in Tenerife. No

sooner had she set foot on this island, in 2008, that she was hired by the company

because of her art and her nature. At present she teaches contemporary dance.

Rocío FontechaRocío, Sevillian, studied Circus Arts in Buenos Aires, and at present she is working in

Acrobatic and Aerobatic international productions for the company Voalá.

Cultural Association D–ArtThis association is responsible for the education in Stage Arts and the development

of productions, shows and cultural events.

They make workshops with invited teachers, and regular courses. At present the

association manages the centre D-Arte «El Roque», a space to create art which is

open to any kind or artistic proposals.
