The liberating mission of Jesus
The four Gospels help us to meet Jesus. They tell us who he is and what kind of a man he was during his life on earth.
They tell us about his mission for which he lived and died. Today's Gospel shows us the man Jesus exercising his
ministry.
The man Jesus was many things. He was a credible teacher, unlike the hypocritical scribes and Pharisees. He lived
compassion and mercy as he showed himself to be at home with all types of people, even with sinners and those who
did not always observe all the details of the Law. Something magnetic about his personality attracted crowds to listen to
him. A man of deep prayer, he had a profound sense of his relationship with God his Father. He was a man who was
totally faithful to his mission, despite being misunderstood and rejected. He was so committed to his mission that he
declared that his food was "to do the will of the One who sent him and to carry out his work.
The Gospel reading today is about a cure which gives credence to his clams and mission. The healing of the deaf man
with a speech impediment was not simply a story of a healing miracle. It is the story of an event which helps to explain
the mission and ministry of Jesus.
Today's message is not just about a miracle: it gives us a key for understanding the mission of Jesus. It shows that the
mission and ministry of Jesus were to liberate people from burdens that prevented them from living life fully. Curing
the deaf man and enabling him to speak are examples of the liberating mission of Jesus.
That same liberating mission of Jesus continues to be our mission and the mission of his followers today. The Second
Vatican Council more than fifty years ago reminded us that we are members of a Church which is a missionary Church.
A more recent reminder is Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium. Contemplating today's Gospel
story is contemplating the account of a miracle; but more than that, we are contemplating the call to mission for all of
us.
The question and challenge for each one of us is how we can contribute in our own lives to this mission of helping our
brothers and sisters with what they need to live their lives as fully as possible.
La misión liberadora de Je
Los cuatro Evangelios nos ayudan a encontrar y a conocer a Jesús. Nos dicen quién es él y qué clase de hombre fue
durante su vida en la tierra. Nos cuentan sobre su misión por la cual vivió y murió. El Evangelio de hoy nos muestra al
hombre Jesús ejerciendo su ministerio.
El hombre Jesús fue muchas cosas. Era un maestro creíble, a diferencia de los escribas hipócritas y los fariseos. Vivió la
compasión y la misericordia al mostrarse a sí mismo como en casa con todo tipo de personas, incluso con los pecadores
y aquellos que no siempre observaban todos los detalles de la Ley. Algo magnético sobre su personalidad atrajo
multitudes para escucharlo. Un hombre de profunda oración, tenía un profundo sentido de su relación con Dios, su
Padre. Fue un hombre que fue totalmente fiel a su misión, a pesar de ser incomprendido y rechazado. Estaba tan
comprometido con su misión que declaró que su comida era "hacer la voluntad del que lo envió y llevar a cabo su
trabajo".
La lectura del Evangelio de hoy trata de una curación que da crédito a su ministerio y misión. La curación de aquel
hombre sordo que tenía un impedimento del habla no era simplemente una historia de un milagro de curación. Es la
historia de un evento que ayuda a explicar la misión y el ministerio de Jesús.
El mensaje de hoy no es solo un milagro: nos da una clave para comprender la misión de Jesús. Muestra que la misión
y el ministerio de Jesús fueron para liberar a las personas de cargas que les impedían vivir plenamente. Curar al sordo y
permitirle hablar es un ejemplo de la misión liberadora de Jesús.
Esa misma misión liberadora de Jesús continúa siendo nuestra misión y la misión de sus seguidores hoy. El Concilio
Vaticano II hace más de cincuenta años nos recordó que somos miembros de una Iglesia que es misionera. Un
recordatorio más reciente es la Exhortación Apostólica del Papa Francisco, Evangelii Gaudium. Contemplar la historia
del Evangelio de hoy es contemplar el relato de un milagro; pero más que eso, estamos contemplando el llamado a la
misión para todos nosotros.
La pregunta y el desafío para cada uno de nosotros es cómo podemos contribuir en nuestras propias vidas a esta misión
de ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas con lo que necesitan para vivir sus vidas lo más plenamente posible.
