Guatemala’s Pacific coast is one of the spots that’s most visited by tourists, both domestic and foreign;

they come seeking the beauties of nature, the beach, and the wonderful weather.

The region has something for everyone: dark volcanic sand as a preamble to a beach that generously lends its waves for water sports and a good tan, or lush forests and nature reserves for exploration by those interested in ecology-related activities.

Rivers, canals, mangroves, and sugar cane, coffee, and cacao plantations complement the vistas and the archaeological sites to be discovered. All this and more can be found along the Pacific coast.

El Pacífico / ThE Pacific

En el kilómetro 215 de la carretera que comunica la cabecera departamental de

Retalhuleu con Champerico, cruzando a la derecha y tomando el camino de terracería, se encuentra la Aldea Acapán, por la que tendrás que pasar – por al menos 17 kilómetros – hasta llegar al Manchón Guamuchal, la reserva de humedales más extensa de la costa sur de Centroamérica que ha sido declarada sitio oficial Ramsar, es decir, un Humedal de Importancia Mundial.

Esta reserva está formada por un poco más de 13,000 hectáreas de sistemas de canales, lagunas, dunas costeras, bosques secos, bosques de palma, agua dulce y manglares – que actúan como filtros naturales de la suciedad drenada hacia ellos por los deltas de los ríos Ocós, Tilapia y Pacaya. Sirve como área de descanso y paso migratorio de varias especies de aves, así como criadero de invertebrados marinos y peces, convirtiéndose en un destino especial de gran diversidad de vida acuática, aves, tortugas,

iguanas y muchas especies más.La comunidad se dedica

principalmente a la pesca y a la agricultura, aunque recientemente se han enfocado en el creciente turismo gracias a la popularidad del Manchón como un sitio idóneo para actividades de recreación en completa armonía y con respeto al medio ambiente.

Gracias a la cooperación de los habitantes de las aldeas cercanas y al patrullaje de las playas de la reserva, se ha logrado la recolección de huevos de tortugas marinas y Parlamas, su incubación y la eventual liberación de las crias. Para aquellos interesados en el avistamiento de aves, múltiples especies migratorias pueden observarse en las costas de Champerico, y se están llevando a cabo proyectos que a corto plazo permitirán la liberación de guacamayas.

Si visitas el Manchón Guamuchal, podrás disfrutar de distintas actividades, todas ellas en completa armonía y con total respeto del medio ambiente..

At kilometer 215 of the road which runs from the departmental capital of

Retalhuleu to Champerico, if you turn right and take the dirt road, you’ll find Aldea Acapán. Continue 17 kilometers through it, and you’ll arrive at Manchán Guamuchal, the largest wetland reserve on the southern coast of Central America that has officially been declared a Ramsar site, that is, a Wetland of International Importance.

This reserve consists of a little over 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres) of canal systems, lagoons, coastal dunes, dry forests, palm forests, freshwater, and mangrove swamps – which act as natural filters for the dirt and grime that pass through them in the deltas of the Ocós, Tilapia and Pacaya rivers. It serves as a rest stop along the migratory paths of many species of birds, as well as a nursery for marine invertebrates and fish, all of which makes it a special destination with an enormous diversity of aquatic life, birds, turtles, iguanas, and many more species.

The community is primarily engaged in fishing and agriculture, although recently it has focused on the growing tourism trade thanks to the popularity of Manchón as an ideal place for recreation with respect for and in complete harmony with the environment.

Thanks to the cooperation of the residents of nearby villages and to the patrolling of the reserve’s beaches, there has been increased collection of sea turtle and Ridley turtle eggs, their incubation, and the eventual release of the hatchlings. For those interested in birdwatching, many migratory species can be observed on the coast near Champerico, and projects are being conducted that will soon permit the release of macaws and parrots.

Monterrico is located on Guatemala’s Pacific coast, in the department of Santa Rosa. It’s one

of the most famous beaches in the country because it’s quite accessible, there are many options for accommodations and food, and of course, the locale has such natural beauty.

Getting to Monterrico from La Antigua on a shuttle will take you a little over two hours, and certainly – in addition to feeling the change in temperature when you leave the vehicle – you’ll notice that the color of the beach’s sand is dark brown because it’s volcanic.

Once you get settled, you’ll want to work on your tan in the sun, venture out to the ocean to swim, or just rest. During the season that runs from September to January, there is another activity that you might want to consider while you spend time in Monterrico.

The Monterrico turtle hatchery (El Tortugario), near the town’s main street, is

home to various endangered animals and does a great job protecting them. As far as the turtles are concerned, the hatchery organizes daily events – with the help of some of the area’s hotels and restaurants that let guests know the times and places where they’ll happen – to release baby turtles into the sea at sunset. For a small donation, you can “adopt” a small turtle that you’ll set free from the beach to the ocean during the event, and the money collected helps to buy turtle eggs (which some locals find on the beach) in order to bury them again and guard them until the baby turtles hatch.

If you’re looking for an activity where you can get close to nature – and its tiny wonders – while you rest and make new friends and enjoy the sun and sea, you definitely have to visit Monterrico and be part of the conservation efforts there..

Monterrico se ubica en la costa del Pacífico de Guatemala, en el departamento de Santa Rosa. Es considerada una de las playas

más famosas del país gracias a que es bastante accesible, a la gran cantidad de opciones de hospedaje y alimentación que ofrece y, claro está, a la naturaleza del lugar.

Llegar a Monterrico desde La Antigua en un shuttle te tomará un poco más de dos horas, y seguramente – además de sentir el cambio en la temperatura al bajarte del vehículo – notarás que el color de la arena de la playa tiene un tono café oscuro gracias a que es arena volcánica.

Una vez que estés instalado, querrás trabajar en tu bronceado bajo el sol, aventurarte a la mar para nadar o solo descansar un poco. Durante la temporada que inicia en septiembre y termina en enero, hay otra actividad qué considerar mientras pasas tiempo en Monterrico.

El Tortugario de Monterrico, muy cerca de la Calle Principal del pueblo, alberga algunos animales en peligro de extinción y lleva a cabo una gran labor tratando de salvarlos. En el caso de las tortugas, el tortugario organiza eventos diarios – con la ayuda de algunos hoteles y restaurantes que informan a sus huéspedes de horarios y lugares en que se llevarán a cabo – para poder liberar pequeñas tortugas hacia el mar durante el atardecer. Por una pequeña donación, puedes “adoptar” una tortuguita que liberarás desde la playa al océano durante el evento, y el dinero que se reúne ayuda a comprar los huevos de tortuga (que algunos de los locales encuentren en la playa) para poder enterrarlos de nuevo y cuidarlos hasta que las tortuguitas salgan del cascarón.

Si estás buscando una actividad que te acerque a la naturaleza – y sus pequeñas maravillas – mientras descansas y haces nuevos amigos y disfrutas del sol y el mar, definitivamente tienes que visitar Monterrico y ser parte de los esfuerzos de conservación que se llevan a cabo allí..
