The committee also sought to interview another individualwas employed in the Cuban Embassy in 1963. Although theview had been prearranged, he left Mexico City suddenly the daycommittee investigators arrived, and returned the day they werescheduled to depart.

The investigators, having decided to stay an extra day, contactedthe former employee by phone, but he refused to speak with them .The committee has learned that Mexican authorities had beenrequested not to allow the committee investigators to interview theemployee.

Members of the Duran family were questioned about ElenaGarro's allegations. They denied that they socialized with thepeople she said were at their party, although Sylvia Duran didrecall that Elena herself may have been at one or two parties ather home in the fall of 1963. Sylvia Duran denied that Oswald hadbeen there.

Knother Mexican has claimed to have been in contact withOswald in Mexico City. Oscar Contreras Lartique told an Americanforeign service officer (not Charles Thomas) in 1967 that as a

/student at the University of Mexico in 1963 he had met Oswald as/ he was leaving a roundtable discussion at the School of Philosophy.

; Contreras, who described Oswald as strange and introverted,• said he spent the rest of the day, that night and part of the

following day with Oswald and some other students. He saidOswald told them he had come to the university looking for proCastro students who might help persuade the Cuban Embassy togrant him a visa. Oswald told them, Contreras said, that he wasfrom California and was a member of a pro-Castro organization inNew Orleans.

Contreras was later reinterviewed by American authorities. Herefused to identify other students who had met Oswald, because he

said they were still active revolutionaries. Contreras stated thatoriginally Oswald was suspected of being an American intelligenceagent, that he never mentioned President Kennedy or assassination, and that he repeatedly expressed a wish to get to Cubapromptly.

Mexican authorities have reported to the committee that therewas indeed an Oscar Contreras Lartique registered at the University of Mexico in 1960, but not in 1963. They also reported that OscarContreras had once signed a manifesto written by a pro-Castrostudent group, but that the group ceased to function in 1962.

Nevertheless, the committee placed some significance in Contreras' story because it has been learned that a professor from theUniversity of Mexico held philosophy seminars at the Duran home.The philosophy professor, a close friend of the Durans, was a wellknown Marxist at the university.

The committee tried to arrange an interview with Contrerasthrough Mexican officials, but when its investigators arrived, Contreras disappeared.
