l equipo de Camilo Bautista, Juan Gris Zavaleta, Eduardo Novillo Astrada y Francisco Elizalde cumplió una gran labor colectiva y supo doblegar al siempre complicado cuarteto de Ayala.

De esta forma, Las Monjitas se toma revancha de la final de la Copa de Bronce, y levanta el segundo trofeo de la temporada.Las Monjitas y Ayala se reparten hasta el momento los dos títulos puestos en juego durante el 38º Torneo Internacional de Polo que organiza Santa María Polo Club.

El partidoLas Monjitas pusieron en evidencia sus intenciones de vengarse de la derrota ante Ayala en la final de bronce desde el principio.

Un fulminante comienzo de la mano de Eduardo Novillo Astrada y Juan Gris Zavaleta le dieron a los de Camilo Bautista una ventaja de 4-1 en el primer chukker.

El segundo período fue el fiel reflejo de lo que sería el decisivo encuentro. Ayala rápidamente salió a achicar diferencias y lo logró. Con un inspiradísimo David “Pelón” Stirling, muy bien secundado por Iñaki Laprida, el resultado pasó rápidamente de 1-4 a 5-5 para establecer una paridad que se mantendría a lo largo del partido.

Es justo mencionar que siempre fueron Las Monjitas quienes llevaron las riendas del encuentro y los que, con un mejor juego colectivo, supieron manejar muy bien el partido.

En el tercer chukker apareció Francisco Elizalde, de gran actuación, para que los naranjas recuperen el dominio en el tanteador y mantenerlo hasta el final del encuentro.

En el cuarto fue cuando Las Monjitas consolidó la victoria con un gran chukker de Eduardo Novillo Astrada. En el quinto Ayala apretó nuevamente el acelerador para llegar al sexto y decisivo período con los de Camilo Bautista arriba por dos goles (11-9)

La paridad, y calidad, que existe entre estos dos equipos quedó evidenciada en el sexto chukker. Monjitas cuidó al máximo la ventaja y Ayala salió con todo, pero con orden, a buscar el ansiado empate. Se puso a tiro con un gol de Pelón Stirling y tuvo un par de ocasiones para igualarlo.

Pero la historia estaba escrita y esta vez le tocaba a Las Monjitas.

Así fue que sonó la campana y se desató el merecido festejo del equipo naranja que suma su primer título de la temporada en Sotogrande y va por más. ●

In the third chukka Francisco Elizalde, who also had a great match, made his mark, and

the team in orange recovered their command of the game, which they retained to the end.In the fourth chukka, Las Monjitas consolidated their big performance with a great performance from Eduardo Novillo Astrada. lombiano Camilo Bautista en la cual de-rrotó a Ayala. Tras los festejos, y previo a recibir la Copa de Plata Sotogrande, La Bocha European Polo conversó con los cuatro polistas del equipo naranja.

“Tenemos un equipo que juega bonito” Siempre lleva la sonrisa a flor de piel pero tras ganar la final de la Copa de Plata la misma era más pronunciada. La felicidad de Camilo Bautista tenía sus motivos y así se lo manifestó a La Bocha European Polo.

“Era la venganza para nosotros por ha-ber perdido la copa de bronce y este equipo de Iñigo (por Ayala) es bravísi-mo. Teníamos la espinita desde el año pasado donde nos pasó lo mismo con el equipo de Bahar Jefri (Ahmibah) en

la Copa de Bronce y la de Plata. Ahora nos pudimos sacar la espina y vamos con más ganas a la Copa de Oro”.Sobre el desempeño de su equipo en la definición ante Ayala, Bautista reco-noció que “éste es el nivel que quería-mos mostrar. Tenemos un equipo que juega bonito, que corre, y eso es lo que queremos hacer, por eso terminamos contentos”.

Para el patrón de Monjitas todos los trofeos son importantes por eso “la Copa de Oro la encaramos de la misma manera. Para nosotros cada partido es una final y a eso venimos, a ganar la de Oro y confiando en que nos va a ir bien”.

“Era fundamental ganarla”

Eduardo Novillo Astrada, la gran figura del equipo de Las Monjitas, expresó su

satisfacción por la consagración y tam-bién por el rendimiento del equipo.

“Fue un lindo partido, corrido, abierto, con muy buena onda. Estuvo divertido. Era fundamental ganar la Copa de Pla-ta para acceder a una buena zona para la Copa de Oro y tener un día más de descanso”, comentó el destacado polista argentino.

Acerca del desempeño colectivo del equipo, Novillo Astrada aclaró que “ju-gamos muy bien pero creo que pode-mos mejorar todavía más. Cometimos muchos errores que nos cuestan caro, porque te meten 3 o 4 goles fáciles por culpa nuestra, pero de todas formas el balance es positivo. Nosotros estamos muy bien y ahora esperemos que los ca-ballos se recuperen tras este partido tan duro”.“Creo que la Copa de Oro va a ser difí-cil. Se suma Broncos que para mí va a estar en la final. Esperemos ser nosotros los finalistas junto a ellos”, agregó.

“No podemos bajar la guardia”

Tras una gran temporada en Inglaterra, el talentoso y prometedor Juan Gris Zavaleta levantó su primer trofeo de la temporada en Sotogrande.

“La verdad que estamos muy conten-tos. Fue un partido muy complicado y cansador pero debe haber sido un buen partido para mirar desde afuera.

Fue la revancha de la final de bronce y seguramente nos crucemos de nuevo en la Copa de Oro”, dijo Zavaleta a La Bo-cha European Polo.Sobre el trofeo que se viene, el más importante de la temporada en Soto-grande, Zavaleta comentó: “Era muy importante ganar esta copa porque te queda una mejor zona para la de Oro pero igual no podemos bajar la guar-dia y tenemos que arrancar la próxima copa con las mismas ganas”.

“Personalmente me sentí mejor, había arrancado más o menos los primeros partidos y hoy (por la final) por suerte me acomodé”, agregó.

“Salió como lo habíamos planeado”

“Fue un partido duro que por suerte se nos dio a nuestro favor. Las cosas salieron como las habíamos planteado, el equipo de a poco va tomando más rodaje, se va afianzando y nos vamos conociendo más”, comentó Francisco Elizalde, de gran desempeño en el deci-sivo encuentro.

“Es un placer jugar con polistas como Eduardo (Novillo) o Juan (Zavaleta) y ellos me brindan una gran confianza y uno se siente muy bien jugando con ellos”, agregó.●

following their great performance in the final in which Columbian patron Camilo

Bautista’s team defeated Ayala.

Following the celebrations and before receiving the Sotogrande Silver Cup, La Bocha European Polo talked to the four players of the team in orange.

“We have a team that plays nice polo” He always wears a smile on his face but after winning the Silver Cup it was more pronounced. There was a reason for Camilo Bautista’s joy and he expressed as much to La Bocha European Polo.

“It was our revenge for having lost the Bronze Cup and Iñigo’s team (Ayala) is excellent. We had a thorn in our side from last year, when the same thing happened to us with Bahar Jefri’s team (Ahmibah) in the Bronze and Silver Cup. Now we were able to pull out the thorn and we are going into the Gold Cup with even more desire”.

On his team’s performance in the final against Ayala, Bautista admitted that “it is the standard we wanted to play at. We have a team that plays nice polo, which runs, and that’s what we want to do, which is why we were satisfied in the end”.

For the Monjitas patron, all of the trophies are important, which is why “we are going into the Gold Cup in the same way. For us every match is a final and that’s what we’re here for: to win the Gold Cup, trusting that it will go well for us”.

“We had to win it”

Eduardo Novillo Astrada, the big name in the Las Monjitas team, expressed his satisfaction at their victory and also the team’s performance.

“It was a nice match, fluent, open and with a good vibe. It was fun. We had to win the Silver Cup in order to be in a good position for the Gold Cup and to have an extra day’s rest”, the prominent Argentine polo player said.

On his team’s performance, Novillo Astrada stated that “we played very well today but I think we can improve even more. We made a lot of mistakes that cost us dear, because they can score three or four easy goals due to our mistakes, but in any event the balance is good. We are in very good shape and now we are hoping that the horses will recover after such a tough match”.

“I think the Gold Cup will be difficult. Broncos are joining the competition and I reckon they will be in the final. We hope to be the finalists alongside them”, he added.

“We can’t let our guard down”

After a great season in England, the talented and promising player Juan Gris Zavaleta lifted his first trophy of the season in Sotogrande.

“We’re really happy. It was a very difficult and tiring match but it must have been a good game to watch. It was a repeat of the Bronze Cup final and no doubt we will meet again in the Gold Cup”, Zavaleta said to La Bocha European Polo.

On the trophy to come, the most important of the Sotogrande season, Zavaleta said: “It was very important that we won this cup because it puts you in a better position for the Gold Cup, but at the same time we can’t let our guard down and we have to start the next cup with the same desire”.“Personally I felt better; I had got going more or less in the first few matches and today (in the final) luckily I got into the swing of things”, he added.

“It went as planned”

“It was a tough match which fortunately went in our favour. Things went as planned, the team has gained experience by degrees, is gaining in confidence and we are learning more about each other”, said Francisco Elizalde, who performed superbly in the final.

“It really is a pleasure playing with players like Eduardo (Novillo) and Juan (Zavaleta) and they give me a lot of confidence; you feel very good playing them”, he added. ●

Ayala Esperanza, con un gran trabajo de Carlos Solari, supo controlar a un complicado rival, que venía de ser finalista también en la copa de bronce, y llevarse el título sin objeciones.Ayala Esperanza comenzó el último chukker con la tranquilidad de cuatro goles de ventaja, ya que había cerrado el quinto período 14-10 arriba. Pero no contó con la gran reacción de Woodchester que con Martín Iturraspe y Mario Gómez le puso presión y llegó a estar un gol por debajo (14-13) a poco del final.

Finalmente un gran gol de Kevin Korst le dio la tranquilidad del triunfo al cuarteto que también integraron Solari, Jejo Taranco y Jake Zobel.

La producción de Ayala Esperanza fue notable a lo largo de todo el trofeo ya que se mantuvo invicto y tuvo altísimas producciones en los diferentes escollos que debió sortear en su camino hacia el título.

Por otra parte, Santa Quiteria se proclamó ganador de la copa subsidiaria, que también estuvo marcada por la igualdad, tras derrotar a Seven Sevens por 12 a 10. ●

Ayala Esperanza clinched the medium-goal La Martina Silver Cup by defeating Woodchester in the final by 15 goals to 13.

attending the final went home feeling more than satisfied with the standard of polo on show.

Ayala Esperanza, with a great performance from Carlos Solari, were able to control a difficult opponent, who were also finalists in the Bronze Cup, and come away as the undisputed champions.

Ayala Esperanza began the last chukka with a four-goal cushion having ended the fifth period 14-10 ahead. But they did not expect the great reaction from Woodchester who, with Martín Iturraspe and Mario Gómez,

put the pressure on and got within a goal (14-13) with the final whistle approaching. In the end, a great goal from Kevin Korst secured victory for the quartet that also included Solari, Jejo Taranco and Jake Jobel.

Ayala Esperanza’s play was outstanding throughout the competition and they remained undefeated, overcoming the various obstacles placed in their way with superb performances.

Santa Quiteria were crowned champions of the Subsidiary Cup, which was also very evenly matched, after beating Seven Sevens by 12 goals to 10. ●

Se proclamó campeón de la Copa de Plata, Valecuatro, tras demostrar durante dos semanas de competencia un gran nivel y certificarlo en la final.

n la definición el cuarteto de Carlos Pallares, Carlos Piñal, Andrés Parladé y Rafa Giménez superó con

claridad a KP Equestrian por 12 a 7 para subirse merecidamente a la cima del podio.

El decisivo encuentro lo dominó de principio a fin y pese a los esfuerzos de KP, (Santiago Torreguitar, Álvaro Muñoz Escassi, James Peat y Richard Fagan), de achicar diferencias el triunfo de KIA El Corzo siempre estuvo controlado.

De esta forma el equipo campeón se tomó revancha de la derrota sufrida en la primera fecha ante el mismo rival. Ese fue el único partido que perdió KIA El Corzo a lo largo de todo el torneo ya que luego sumó triunfos ante L-14, La Querencia y Santa Anita en semifinales.

La Copa Subsidiaria del Bajo Handicap fue a parar a manos de L-14 que derrotó en la final, y en chukker suplementario con gol de Daniel “Peludo” Gariador, a Santa Anita por 8 a 7.●

after performing well over the two weeks of competition and in the final.

he quartet of Carlos Pallares, Carlos Piñal, Andrés Parladé and Rafa Giménez convincingly overcame KP Equestrian in the final by 12 goals to 7

to deservedly secure their place on top of the podium.

They dominated the final from beginning to end and, despite the efforts of KP, with Santiago Torreguitar, Álvaro Muñoz Escassi, James Peat and Richard Fagan, to close the gap, KIA El Corzo’s victory always looked like the most likely outcome.

The champions took revenge for their defeat in the first round against the same opponents. It was the only match that KIA El Corzo lost in the entire tournament as they defeated L-14, La Querencia and Santa Anita in the semi-finals.

The Subsidiary Low-goal Cup went to L-14, who defeated Santa Anita in the final by 8 goals to 7 with a goal from Daniel “Peludo” Gariador in an extra chukka. ●

El equipo de Iñigo Zobel, David Stirling, Valerio Zubiaurre e Iñaki Laprida, derrotó con claridad a Las Monjitas por 8 a 6 en un atractivo encuentro disputado en la cancha 4 de Los Pinos y que fue seguido por una numerosa grada.

Ayala logró rápidamente sacar ventaja en el marcador y a partir de allí exhibió su supremacía a lo largo de todo el encuentro.

Un gran trabajo de David “Pelón” Stirling, que resultó demoledor en sus acciones ofensivas, y la tarea de sus

“soldados” Valerio Zubiaurre e Iñaki Laprida, fueron claves para superar a Las Monjitas que no logró un buen funcionamiento colectivo y sólo gravitó gracias al talento de Eduardo Novillo Astrada y Juan Gris Zavaleta.

En la corta duración del torneo ambos equipos superaron con solvencia sus compromisos, (Ayala le ganó a Dos Lunas 11-8 y Las Monjitas hizo lo propio con I Lovka Las Balas 11-10) y si bien todavía queda mucho por recorrer ambos equipos serán, sin dudas, animadores del 38º Torneo Internacional de Polo que organiza Santa María Polo Club.

La Final Subsidiaria de la Copa de Bronce correspondio a Leones que venció 12 a 9 a Tattinger-Dos Lunas.

Fundación Hipoterapia

Un hecho para destacar en la final de la Copa de Bronce de Alto Handicap fue la buena respuesta del público que colaboró con las entradas al partido y cuya recaudación fue destinada para el Centro de Hipoterapia de la Fundación Santa María. En la primera final de la temporada se recaudaron 4.000 €.●

Se adjudicó la Copa de Bronce Hackett de alto handicap del 38º Torneo Internacional de Polo al derrotar en la final a Las Monjitas por 8 a 6.

Ayala were crowned champions of the Bronze Cup and lifted the first trophy of the season in the High-goal competition.

The team of Iñigo Zobel, David Stirling, Valerio Zubiaurre and Iñaki Laprida, convincingly defeated Las Monjitas by 8 goals to 6 in an attractive match held on Field 4 of Los Pinos, watched by a large crowd.Ayala managed to quickly get ahead on the scoreboard and from then on demonstrated

their supremacy throughout the match.Excellent play from David ‘Pelón’ Stirling, who was devastating on the attack, and some good work from his ‘foot soldiers’, Valerio Zubiaurre and Iñaki Laprida, were key factors in their dominance over Las Monjitas, who were unable to operate well as a team and were only able to have an impact thanks to the talents of Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Juan Gris Zavaleta.

In the short tournament, both teams confidently overcame their obstacles (Ayala beat Dos Lunas by 11-8 and Las Monjitas defeated I Lovka Las Balas by 11-10) and, although there is still a long way to go, it looks

like both teams are likely to provide plenty of entertainment in the 38th International Polo Tournament organised by Santa María Polo Club.The Subsidiary Final of the Bronze Cup was won by Leones who defeated Tattinger-Dos Lunas by 12 goals to 9.

Riding Therapy Foundation

A notable feature of the final of the High-goal Bronze Cup was the good response from the public, whose ticket fees for the match went to the Santa María Foundation Riding Therapy Centre. In the first final of the season 4,000 euros were collected. ●

temporada de polo en Sotogrande.

Fue una justa final ya que tanto Scapa John Smith como Woodchester exhibieron un gran nivel a lo largo de todo el torneo.

La definición fue muy pareja, como era de esperar, y recién en el último chukker el ganador logró marcar la diferencia en el juego y el marcador para finalmente llevarse el torneo.

En la fase previa, Scapa John Smith

fue el primero en lograr el pasaje a la final tras vencer a Lexus Hybrid en un disputado encuentro que se definió en favor del ganador en el período final.

No menos emocionante y parejo resulto la otra semifinal donde Woodchester, que hasta el cuarto chukker tenía dominado el partido, tuvo que definir su suerte en chukker suplementario con gol de Mario Gómez tras derrotar a Seven Sevens 14 a 13.

La Copa Subsidiaria del Mediano Handicap fue a parar a manos de Ayala Esperanza, equipo que integraron Kevin Korst, Alejo Taranco, Carlos Solari y J. Zobel, al derrotar a Santa Quiteria 13 a 7. ●

Ellerstina, vigente campeón del Abierto Argentino, confirmó su superioridad sobre La Dolfina al derrotarlo por 11 a 10 en “La Revanche”, evento que organizó Polo de Deauville y que fue seguido por un interesante número de público y transmitido en directo por televisión a varias partes del mundo.

se jugó a seis chukkers en la nueva cancha del Polo de Deauville ubicada en el Hipódromo de dicha ciudad francesa.

Para tan importante evento los ocho protagonistas de lujo, defendiendo los colores de Ellerstina y La Dolfina, utilizaron sus propios caballos que poseen en Inglaterra, Francia y España, salvo Mariano Aguerre, que tuvo aporte de Lucas Monteverde y Adolfo Cambiaso.

Los antecedentes entre ambos equipos, que se enfrentaron en tres de las últimas cuatro definiciones en Palermo (2005 y 2007 el triunfo fue para La Dolfina y 2008 lo ganó Ellerstina), además de los 80 goles que suman los dos cuartetos hacían del partido un evento único.

La transmisión del encuentro batió récords de audiencia y pudo disfrutarse en directo por EuroSport en Europa, Estados Unidos, Argentina y 12 países de Asia.

El evento, que por primera vez en la historia enfrentaba a los campeones del Abierto fuera de Argentina se debió a una iniciativa del conde Phillipps Nicolay, presidente del Club de Polo de Deauville, y del presidente de la Federación Internacional de Polo (FIP), Patrick Guerrand Hermès.

El partido

La expectativa por ver a los dos mejores equipos del mundo era muy grande y ambos, Ellerstina y La Dolfina, lo confirmaron con creces al brindar un atractivo espectáculo.

El encuentro comenzó favorablemente para el cuarteto de los hermanos Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres, Pablo Mac Donough y Juan Martín Nero al dominar los dos primeros chukkers.

La lluvia que cayó durante todo el día hizo que los primeros chukkers se jugasen con mayor “precaución” por parte de los protagonistas.

Pero tras el “estudio” previo de la cancha y de los rivales, La Dolfina y Ellerstina comenzaron a mostrar sus verdaderas armas y a ofrecer un partido con mayor intensidad y emotividad.

A partir del tercer chukker comenzó a darse un trámite más igualado pese a que La Dolfina sufrió, en el período anterior,

la baja de Bartolomé Castagnola por una lesión en la mano.

El “Lolo” fue suplantado, y en gran forma, por Guillermo Terrera, quien posteriormente fue elegido el mejor jugador del partido.

La primera mitad del partido culminó con un empate a 5. El complemento de “La Revancha” mantuvo la misma tónica de igualdad entre Ellerstina y La Dolfina pese a que en el cuarto período el equipo de los hermanos Pieres, Mac Donough y Nero consiguió un parcial de 8-6.La Dolfina reaccionó rápidamente en el quinto chukker gracias a la “magia” de Cambiaso y la buena producción ofensiva de Terrera.

En el sexto y definitivo chukker dos goles de Facundo y Gonzalo pusieron arriba a Ellerstina que pareció tener controlado el triunfo hasta que Terrera achicó nuevamente la ventaja y le puso suspenso a la definición.

Finalmente el vigente campeón del Abierto Argentino se quedó con la victoria por 11 a 10 y mantuvo la supremacía establecida en diciembre de 2008 con La Dolfina. Ahora resta esperar su confirmación en esta temporada cuando se juegue una nueva edición del mejor torneo del mundo.●

Le palmarès des deux équipes, qui se sont affrontées trois fois au cours des quatre dernières éditions du championnat à Palermo (les années 2005 et 2007 ont vu le triomphe de La Dolfina qui s’est inclinée devant Ellerstina en 2008), ainsi que les 80 goals de handicap accumulés par les deux quatuors ont donné à cette rencontre un caractère unique.

Le match, qui a battu des records d’audience, a été retransmis en direct par Eurosport en Europe, aux États-Unis, en Argentine et dans 12 pays d’Asie.

Le duel, qui opposait pour la première fois de l’histoire les champions de l’Open d’Argentine à l’étranger, s’est tenu en France à l’initiative du comte Philippe de Nicolay, président du Polo de Deauville, et de Patrick Guerrand, le président de la Fédération Internationale de Polo (FIP).

La partieLa rencontre, qui voyait s’affronter pour la première fois les deux meilleures équipes du monde en dehors de l’Argentine, suscitait une attente toute particulière. Le public ne fut pas déçu puisque Ellerstina et La Dolfina ont offert un spectacle d’une intensité croissante.

La rencontre a démarré sous de bons auspices pour le quatuor formé par les frères Gonzalo et Facundo Pieres, Pablo Mac Donough et Juan Martín Nero, qui a nettement dominé les deux premiers chukkers.La pluie qui est tombée toute la journée sur le terrain a limité l’ardeur des deux équipes qui ont joué avec prudence au cours des premiers chukkers.Après le round « d’observation » du terrain et du rival, La Dolfina et Ellerstina ont dévoilé leur véritable jeu en offrant une partie d’une grande intensité riche en émotions.À partir du troisième chukker, l’affrontement s’est équilibré en dépit du fait que La Dolfina a dû se priver de Bartolomé Castagnola qui s’est blessé à la main au cours de la période antérieure.Ce dernier, communément appelé « Lolo », fut remplacé par un Guillermo Terrera au meilleur de sa forme qui a été élu, à juste titre, « meilleur joueur de la rencontre » au terme de la partie.La première moitié de la rencontre s’est soldée par un match nul à 5 partout et les périodes consécutives de La Revanche n’ont pas réellement permis de départager Ellerstina et La Dolfina bien que l’équipe des frères Pieres, de Mac Donough et de Nero s’est légèrement détachée par 8 à 6 au cours de la quatrième période.La Dolfina a réagi immédiatement au cinquième chukker grâce au coup de maître de Cambiaso et à l’excellente présence offensive de Terrera.Au cours du sixième et dernier chukker, les deux goals de Facundo et de Gonzalo ont concrétisé l’avantage de Ellerstina qui semblait maîtriser sa victoire jusqu’à ce que Terrera réduise l’avantage et relance le suspense.En fin de compte, le champion en titre de l’Open d’Argentine s’est imposé par 11 à 10 et confirme ainsi sa suprématie de décembre 2008 face à La Dolfina.Il ne lui reste plus qu’à défendre sa position au cours de la saison qui verra une nouvelle édition du meilleur tournoi du monde.●

« La idea de realizar « La Revancha » surgió antes de la final del Abierto de Argentina del 2008. Con Patrick Guerrand-Hermès nos preguntamos porqué no podían jugar los dos equipos en Francia y a partir de ahí se fue concretando la idea que tiene el compromiso firme de seguir trayendo a los finalistas del Campeonato Abierto de Argentina los próximos años ».

« La Federación Internacional de Polo (FIP) se ocupaba en los inicios del polo amateur pero con el paso del tiempo fuimos, y seguiremos, organizando torneos de más goles. Junto a Marcos Uranga discutimos la importancia de tener también al más alto handicap y así fue que con un sponsor, el apoyo de Jorge Neuss todo se terminó de organizar gracias a la amistad que nos une con Philippe de Nicolay. El matrimonio se realiza y consultando a Gonzalo Pieres sobre jugar en Deauville, nos dijo: « Por que no ? » y hoy los mejores jugadores del mundo están acá ».

« L’idée d’organiser La Revanche a germé avant la finale de l’Open d’Argentine 2008. Avec Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, nous nous sommes demandés pourquoi les deux équipes ne pourraient pas s’affronter en France et, à partir de là, l’idée d’attirer également les finalistes du championnat d’Argentine ces prochaines années a fait son chemin. ».

« À l’origine, la Fédération Internationale de Polo (FIP) s’occupait du polo amateur mais, avec le temps, elle a organisé et continuera à organiser des tournois avec un niveau de plus en plus élevé de goals. Avec Marcos Uranga, nous avons débattu de l’importance d’élever également le handicap au maximum. Et c’est ainsi qu’avec l’aide d’un sponsor tel que Rolex et avec l’appui de Jorge Neuss, nous avons pu concrétiser cette idée grâce à l’amitié qui nous unit à Philippe de Nicolay. La symbiose fut totale, d’autant plus que Gonzalo Pieres n’a pas hésité à donner sa bénédiction pour jouer à Deauville. D’où la concentration des meilleurs joueurs du monde ici aujourd’hui. »

¿Cómo describirías el estilo de juego de La Dolfi na ?No tenemos una estrategia definida antes del partido, nos entendemos sin necesidad de hablar. Con la mirada basta, te diría.

¿Cuál es el jugador que más te gusta de Ellerstina?Facundo Pieres, por su fuerza y gran habilidad. Es un jugador que me gustaría tener en mi equipo.

¿Qué pensas del boom del polo en Francia?Lo que hace el Polo de Deauville organizando este partido te da una idea. Me parece fantástico y si habrá próximas « revanchas » y me toca venir, claro que lo haría y con gusto.

¿Vendrías en el futuro a Deauvillepara jugar la Copa de Oro ?

Se tendrían que dar las condiciones, es difícil. Agosto es generalmente mi mes de vacaciones.

¿Cuál es el mejor recuerdo de tu época de polo amateur ?

La « Copa Padres e Hijos » que organizaba la Asociación Argentina de Polo y que lamentablemente no existe más. Los padres no podían marcar goles, muy simpático para sus hijos. Yo tenía 10 años cuando lo jugué y aunque no gané el torneo tengo el mejor de los recuerdos.●

Comment décririez-vous le style de jeu de La Dolfi na?Nous n’avons pas de stratégie bien établie ; nous n’avons pas besoin de paroles pour nous comprendre. Je dirais même que le regard suffit.

Quel est le joueur d’Ellerstina qui vous plaît le plus ?Facundo Pieres pour son énergie et sa grande maestria. C’est un joueur qu’il me plairait de compter dans mon équipe.

Que pensez-vous du boom du polo en France ?L’organisation de cette rencontre au Polo de Deauville cést un exemple. C’est une initiative fantastique. S’il y avait d’autres « revanches » à l’avenir et si mon équipe était sélectionnée, je reviendrais naturellement avec le plus grand plaisir.

Serez-vous à Deauville un jour en août pour disputer la Coupe d’Or ?

C’est difficile, mais il faudrait voir les conditions. D’habitude, je prends mes vacances au mois d’août.

Quel est votre meilleur souvenir de l’époque du polo amateur ?

La « Copa Padres e Hijos » (Coupe Pères et Fils) qui était jadis organisée par l’Asociación Argentina de Polo et qui n’existe malheureusement plus. Lors de ces rencontres, les pères ne pouvaient pas marquer de goals, ce qui était très sympathique pour leurs fils. J’avais 10 ans lorsque j’y ai participé et, bien que je n’aie pas gagné le tournoi, j’en garde les meilleurs souvenirs. ●

Yves Meylan, Director General de Jaeger-LeCoultre Francia, comunicó a La Bocha European Polo su entu-siasmo de volver a Chantilly (Jaeger-LeCoultre patrocinó el Open de France en el 2008) para un torneo que se anuncia muy disputado y que contribuirá a aumentar la notoriedad del polo en Francia.

Durante la «Jaeger-LeCoultre Open de France Polo Cup» los concurrentes podrán descubrir las creaciones de la marca Jaeger-LeCoultre, los nuevos Grande Reverso y Grande Reverso Doudate, como también los modelos más deportivos como el Rever-so Squadra y el Reverso Squadra Lady.

En el 2008 el equipo Jaeger-LeCoultre de André Fabre, los primos Clemente y Juan Gris Zavaleta y el inglés Tom Morley perdió la final ante Polo de Deauville de Alexandre Sztarkman con Darío Musso, Juan Ambrog-gio y el francés Pierre-Henri N’Goumou.

Fue Dario Musso quien le dio la victoria a su equipo con un gol de oro en chukker suplementario quedando el resultado en 7 a 6.

Este año el equipo Jaeger-LeCoultre se renueva totalmente ya que junto al patrón André Fabre jugarán Tomás Goti, Faty Reynot Blanco y Pablito LLorente.

En 2008, l’équipe Jaeger-LeCoultre d’André Fabre, des cousins Clemente et Juan-Gris Za-valeta et du Britannique Tom Morley s’est inclinée en finale face au Polo de Deauville d’Alexandre Sztarkman, de Darío Musso, de Juan Ambroggio et du Français Pierre-Henri N’Goumou.

Ce fut Dario Musso qui a offert la victoire à son équipe par un goal en or lors du chukker supplémentaire en portant le score à 7-6.

que comenzó con mal pie y se llevó merecidamente el triunfo y el título más importante de la temporada británica que tuvo su gran final en Cowdray Park Polo.

Desde muy temprano la gente se volcó en gran número, y con sus clásicos picnics, a la cancha principal de Cowdray para seguir la final del Abierto Británico.

El tiempo no acompañó ya que la jornada de la final estuvo fría y con pasajes de lluvia. De todas formas la

Fue éste último el que apareció en gran forma marcando dos goles para devolverle el dominio en el tanteador a Dubai por 9-7 y ponerle una gran dósis de expectativa a los chukkers finales.

En el quinto chukker, Cambiaso recibió un tacazo que lo hizo mermar en su rendimiento y como contrapartida motivó a La Bamba de Areco que cerró ese parcial 11-10 arriba.

Dos golazos de Gonzalito Pieres, al iniciarse el sexto y decisivo chukker le dieron a La Bamba de Areco una ventaja, a la postre irremontable, para llevarse, merecidamente y por primera vez, la Gold Cup 2009.

Además del prestigioso trofeo, La Bamba de Areco tuvo en Facundo Pieres al goleador del certamen (7 goles marcó en la final), en tanto que la yegua Shannon, jugada por Gonzalo Pieres fue considerada el mejor ejemplar de la final. ●

and deservedly clinched victory and the most important title of the British season, with its grand final at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

From very early in the day a large crowd assembled with their classic picnics at the main Cowdray field to watch the final of the British Open.They were unlucky with the weather as the day of the final was cold and rainy, but stayed in their places and were entertained with the deciding match between Dubai and La Bamba de Areco.

The match

The game, due to the damp field, was more hard work than it was attractive, but the two teams, with the individual talents of Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres (La Bamba) and Adolfo Cambiaso (Dubai) made sure the final was a spectacle. The match began in favour of Dubai, who quickly earned a two-goal lead. In the second

period, La Bamba de Areco levelled the match and went straight past their opponents in the third chukka before ending the first half with a minimal lead of 6 goals to 5.

With the second half underway the pace of the game picked up and the talented Pieres brothers and Adolfo Cambiaso started to do their thing.It was the latter who appeared to be in great form, scoring two goals to regain Dubai’s lead by 9-7, adding a big dose of excitement to the final chukkas.In the fifth, Cambiaso received a knock which affected his performance and in turn spurred La Bamba de Areco on to end the chukka 11-10 ahead. Two fantastic goals from Gonzalito Pieres at the beginning of the sixth and final chukka gave La Bamba de Areco a lead that would prove to be insurmountable and they deservedly won the Gold Cup 2009 for the first time.

In addition to the trophy, La Bamba de Areco had Facundo Pieres as the top goal-scorer of the competition (with seven goals scored in the final), whilst the mare Shannon, ridden by Gonzalo Pieres, received the award for best horse of the final. ●

“Supimos manejarlo”

“La verdad que el partido por suerte salió como lo habíamos planeado así que estamos muy contentos por el triunfo”, manifestó un feliz Gonzalito Pieres a La Bocha European Polo.

“Era un partido muy difícil ya que enfrente teníamos un equipo que venía jugando muy bien pero por suerte supimos manejarlo. La cancha, bastante húmeda, también complicó un poco la cosa pero nos pudimos acomodar con el correr de los chukkers.

Ellos arrancaron mejor el partido pero nosotros supimos esperar. Una vez que pudimos comenzar a hacer nuestro juego, a pasarnos la bocha con Facu, empezamos a hacer la diferencia”, agregó.

Gonzalito y su hermano Facundo llevan una gran temporada que comenzó con el título del Abierto Argentino con Ellerstina, siguió con el US Open con el equipo de Audi y lo continuaron con La Bamba de Areco en el Abierto

Británico. Al respecto, el mayor de los hermanos Pieres comentó: “Realmente la temporada viene muy bien y esperemos que siga así todo el año”.

“La paciencia fue una virtud del equipo”

Facundo Pieres, el goleador del torneo y pieza clave en el equipo campeón, conversó con La Bocha European Polo tras la consagración y dejó sus impresiones sobre la final de la Gold Cup.

“Fue un partido bravo para jugar, por el rival y por la cancha. Empezamos mal, después nos acomodamos pero igualmente fue durísimo. De todas formas creo que jugamos bien sino no hubiésemos ganando nunca”, explicó.

“La paciencia fue una virtud del equipo. Venimos toda la temporada así, ya que todos los partidos fueron muy complicados para nosotros. En la final también sabíamos lo que

este tradicional trofeo que en esta ocasión volvió a contar con una nume-rosa y selecta grada que disfrutó a pleno de la exhibición. Inglaterra, con James Beim, Mark y Luke Tomlinson y Mal-colm Borwick no pudo con el talento de Cambiaso y Pieres y pese a sus contínuos esfuerzos por achicar diferencias en el tan-teador el cuarteto argentino fue netamen-te superior.

La Coronation Cup, instituida en 1911 por el Ranelagh Club para conmemorar la coronación del Rey Jorge V, tradicio-nalmente lo juegan anualmente una selec-ción de la Hurlingham Polo Association enfrentando a distintas formaciones. La tradicional disputa de este trofeo se inició a partir del año 1911 hasta 1939, y fue pro-tagonizada entre los ganadores del Lon-don Open Tournament, Hurlingham, Roehampton, Ranelagh y el Inter-Regi-mental, llevándose a cabo posteriormente dos encuentros conmemorativos en 1951 y 1953.

Recién en 1971 tomó continuidad con la organización de la Hurlingham Polo Association’s International Day.

Luego lo hizo en 1995, oportunidad en la cual la formó con Gastón Laulhé, Tomás Fernández Llorente, Benjamín Araya y Julio Zavaleta, y también ganó, en esta oportunidad por 14 a 8. In 2000 they also managed a hard-fought victory by 10 goals to 9 with Jorge Healy, Milo Fernández Araujo, Eduardo Heguy and Matías Mac Donough in the side.

¿Cómo se encuentra actualmente Mariano Aguerre?Bien, la verdad que siempre haciendo lo que a nosotros nos gusta, que es una suerte. Con muchos proyectos y planes tras un año movido pero que es una consecuencia de estar uno en un momento de su carrera crucial, donde se cosecha lo que uno sembró. Gracias a Dios el 2008 fue un año movido pero muy positivo.

¿Por qué lo defi ne como crucial?Porque creo que estoy en mi madurez deportiva profesional, entonces es ahora cuando se empiezan a ver los frutos de todo el trabajo y dedicación de muchos años.

¿Hay Mariano Aguerre para rato?

Obvio, sí, sí. Alcancé mi maduración deportiva lo que no quiere decir que estoy para retirarme.

Existieron rumores sobre su posible retirada de La Dolfi na tras el último Abierto Argentino, ¿que hay de cierto en ello?

La gente siempre habla. Si habla cuando ganás, imaginate cuando se pierde. Pero la verdad es que La Dolfina es un equipo donde me divierte jugar y cada año que pasa me divierto más. Mientras sume en el equipo voy a seguir y cuando deje de sumar me retiraré. Pero ello lo sé y lo decidiré yo solo.

¿Hay más ganas y motivación este año por querer recuperar el título, o la misma siempre existe?

La motivación siempre la tenés. Sin motivación no podrías seguir jugando, por lo menos el Abierto Argentino.

Pero, indudablemente, perder bajonea mucho más de lo que incentiva. Es mucho más motivante seguir ganando, sentirse favorito, pero lo del año pasado fue un tropezón que tuvimos y dentro de poquito tenemos la revancha.

¿Repercutió tan fuerte en ustedes la derrota pese a que venían de ganar el Abierto tres años consecutivo?

Obviamente. Cuando le tomás el gusto a los triunfos, la derrota te duele mucho más. Sobretodo porque están todos los huevos puestos en una canasta. Para los jugadores el Abierto Argentino es muy importante y pasa una vez por año y querés aprovecharlo al máximo y llegar a lo más alto. Además de tener la suerte de estar en un equipo bueno, porque hay una cantidad de jugadores de extraordinario talento que no tienen equipo con el cual puedan competir o ganar.

¿Fue justa la derrota ante Ellerstina?Creo que sí, fue justa. Merecieron ganar ellos y para mí no hay tu tía (sic), por algo levantaron la copa y sería ridículo poner cualquier tipo de excusas.

¿Qué balance hace de la temporada de Estados Unidos?

Tuve una temporada de verano muy buena, donde perdímos en la semifinal del US Open, y ahora la temporada de invierno (se encuentra jugando actualmente en Nueva York) también viene muy bien. Pero lo importante es que los proyectos siguen y otros nuevos se van presentando así que en ese sentido todo es muy positivo.

¿Cómo se prepara para afrontar la temporada argentina, viendo que cada año es más exigente desde todo punto de vista?

Entreno, tengo preparador físico personal, Norberto Imaz, que viaja conmigo y con el cual entreno todo el año. Además me cuido mucho.Siempre fluye la palabra proyecto, con caballos nuevos, llevando caballos de Estados Unidos.Tengo una organización importante, por suerte, con muy buena gente trabajando, muy buenos socios, buenos clientes, así que, como te dije al principio de la nota, es un muy buen momento de mi carrera.

¿Qué porcentaje le otorga a su organización en lo que es Mariano Aguerre como jugador de polo?

Creo que no se pueden separar. Hoy por hoy mi organización es el 100%, yo soy parte de ella.

¿Cómo ve el próximo Abierto Argentino?Lo veo muy bien. Creo que se han establecido dos equipos de punta y se ha formado un clásico que, si Dios quiere este año, lo vamos a poder jugar.Tenemos dos equipos de 80 goles, que no creo que se pueda ver en muchas oportunidades en Palermo.

¿Comparte los comentarios de que en las últimas fi nales del Abierto la estrategia prevalece. Cada vez más sobre el juego y que se brinda poco espectáculo?

La final del Abierto Argentino es como la final del Mundial de fútbol, de la Champions League. Tenés que jugar mucha defensa, que arriesgar poco, es más táctico. Pero todos los deportes lo son y también todos los deportes son resultadistas.●

How is Mariano Aguerre at the moment?I’m well; the truth is we’re always doing what we like, which is fortunate. There’s lots of project and plans after a busy year, but it’s the result of being at a crucial point in your career, when you reap what you’ve sown. Thankfully, 2008 was a busy but very positive year.

Why do you defi ne it as a crucial time?Because I think I’m at my maturity as a professional sportsman, so it’s now that I’m starting to see the fruits of all the hard work and dedication of many years.

Will Mariano Aguerre be around for a while?Yes, of course. I’ve reached my sporting maturity, which doesn’t mean that I’m about to retire.

There were rumours about your possible retirement from La Dolfi na after the last Argentine Open; is there any truth in them?

People always talk. If they talk when you win, just imagine when you lose. But the fact is La Dolfina is a team I enjoy playing for and every year that goes by I enjoy it more and more. For as long as I fit into the team I’ll stay and when I no longer fit I’ll leave. But I’m the only one who will know when this is and it will be me who makes the decision.

Are you more hungry and motivated to recover the title this year, or do you feel the same as always?

The motivation is always there. Without motivation you couldn’t play, at least not in the Argentine Open. But, undoubtedly, losing is more discouraging than it is encouraging. Continuing to win is much more motivating, when you feel like the favourite, but last year was a slip-up and the rematch is very soon.

Did defeat have a big impact on you even though you had just come off the back of winning the Open three years running?

Of course. When you get a taste for victory, defeat hurts much more. Particularly because all your eggs are in the same basket. For the players the Argentine Open is very important; it happens once a year and you want to make the most of it and get to the

top. And you have to be lucky to be in a good

team, because there are loads of exceptionally

talented players

who

don’t have a team to compete or win with.

Was the defeat against Ellerstina a fair result?

I think so. They deserved to win and I’m not going to make excuses; they won the cup for a reason and it would be ridiculous to try and say otherwise.

What’s your assessment of the United States season?

Good. I had a very good summer season in which we lost in the semi-final of the US Open and now the winter season [he is currently playing in New York) is also going well. But the important thing is for the project to continue and new ones are coming up, so in this sense everything is very positive.

How do you prepare to face the Argentine season when you can see it becoming more and more demanding every year in all aspects?

I train; I have a personal physical trainer, Norbeto Imaz, who travels with me and who I train with all year. He really looks after me.The word ‘project’ is repeated a lot, with new horses, bringing horses from the United States.I have a serious organisation, fortunately, with very good

people working in it, very good partners and good customers; so, as I said at the beginning, it’s a very good moment in my career.

What percentage of yourself, of Mariano Aguerre the polo player, do you give to the organisation?

I don’t think you can separate the two. Right now my organisation is 100 %; I’m part of it.

How is the next Argentine Open looking?It’s looking good. I think there are two teams that have established themselves at the top and a classic clash has been created which, God willing, we will play this year. We have two 80-goal teams, which I don’t think can be seen very often in Palermo.

Do you agree with the comments that say that in the last fi nals of

the Argentine Open strategy took precedence and

that it is playing an increasingly

important role to the point

that the

spectacle suffers?

The final of the Argentine Open is

like the final of the football World Cup or

the Champions League. You have to play very

defensively and take less risks; it’s more tactical.

But that’s what all sports are like and

all sports are also results-oriented.●

El título fue para La Mimosa, compuesto por Stefania Annunziata, María Isabel Pochelu, Sehr Saeed Ahmad y Adriana Coria, que le ganó por 7.5 a 2 a LTD Polo Team, que contó con la polista argentina Lía Salvo en el equipo.

El tercer puesto quedó en manos de Marchiopolo que venció a Argentario Polo Club por 8 a 3.5 Las jugadoras quedaron muy conformes con la organización y con el nivel de competición y así se lo hicieron saber a los responsables del torneo en Argentario Polo Club al cual comprometieron para que en el 2010 se repita el evento y nuevamente puedan tener “un torneo sólo para las mujeres, de gran nivel y en un club extraordinario”.●

¿Qué los motivó a ser árbitros de polo?

Gómez Romero: Cuando comencé como árbitro, el referato de polo era un verdadero problema ya que los jugadores tenían que hacer de re-ferís. Pocos querían hacerlo ya que los partidos eran una guerra y se ne-cesitaba alguien que fuese imparcial. Fue a partir de ese momento, prin-cipios de los años 90, que se crea el cuerpo de referís en Argentina que fue precursor en este tema. Pero ser referí tiene sus cosas lindas por su-puesto, por algo estoy acá.

Baibiene: Yo jugaba al polo y por temas laborales tuve que dejar. Ví en el referato una forma de seguir conectado al polo. Comenzó como un hobby pero cuando me dí cuenta

ya llevaba 14 años arriba del caba-llo. Ahora es una profesión que yo siem-pre comparo con la de un piloto de avión. Las horas de vuelo que uno va haciendo en el referato le permiten a uno manejar partidos, controlar jugadores, estados de ánimo, etc.

¿El árbitro de polo necesariamente tiene que haber sido jugador?

GR: Totalmente. Si vos no fuiste ju-gador, y te diría jugador profesional, es muy difícil manejar un partido de polo. El haber sido jugador le per-mite a un árbitro interpretar y ver situaciones de una forma que sino las viviste en la cancha es muy difícil que las puedas entender o aplicar. Luego están, como dice Matías, las horas de vuelo que a través de expe-

riencias uno va aprendiendo a ma-nejar. Pero tenés que conocer lo que está sucediendo en la cancha.

B: Sin ninguna duda. Lo que ha cambiado bastante es que, al haber tanto polo profesional en el mun-do y muchos comenzar a vivir del referato, estás arbitrando alrededor de 200 o más partidos por tempo-rada y que, sin importar el nivel de handicap que te toque arbitrar, es mucho.

¿Con tantos partidos por tempo-rada, la saturación no perjudica el rendimiento?

B: Depende mucho de la persona-lidad de uno, como lo vive y lo ma-neje. El lugar adonde va a arbitrar también es importante. El escenario

que vos tenés, de jugadores, presión, de apoyo, todo es muy importante. No es lo mismo ser referí en Argen-tina que en otra parte del mundo.

¿El juez se siente respaldado?GR: Depende del lugar. Pero nece-sita estar siempre respaldado. Es fundamental que así sea, o por una asociación de polo o una dirigencia. Que estén detrás tuyo y te den el respaldo suficiente como para po-der mantener la disciplina y que no puedas llegar a ese grado de satura-ción del cual hablás.

Yo fui referí durante tres años de la Copa de la Reina en Inglaterra y ahí es donde más respaldo tenés. Hay toda una organización detrás y es impresionante la profesionalidad con la que se lleva el referato en In-glaterra. Reuniones semanales, con-ferencias, comité disciplinario, que es una parte.

En Inglaterra te sentís más respalda-do porque lo que vos decís o decidís es palabra santa, indiscutible. En otros países no es tan así, siempre

hay un poco de políticas internas que desdibujan tu autoridad.

¿El referí disfruta verdaderamente del partido de polo?

B: Sin ningún lugar a dudasGR: Se puede disfrutar mucho. Hay partidos que un poco menos, por la tensión que conllevan, pero en su mayoría los disfrutás intensamente.

¿Qué prefi eren arbitrar, un partido de bajo handicap o uno de alto?

B: Un alto handicap toda la vida.GR: Personalmente me divierte mu-cho más un alto handicap. Con esto no quiero decir que un polo de 80 goles sea más fácil de arbitrar, por-que nunca lo es, pero vos estás más concentrando en el juego, conocés la personalidad de los jugadores, y eso hace que puedas acompañar el espectáculo de mejor forma.

B: En un partido de 80 goles estás siendo parte de la excelencia del de-porte. Pero también tenés torneos, como en Sotogrande, donde hacés parti-dos de bajo handicap por la maña-

na y un alto handicap por la tarde y ahí ves las diferencias tremendas que hay en el deporte.

En el bajo handicap vos notás que hay gente que está jugando al polo sin conocer las reglas. Se cree que por llevar un taco puede jugar y en esas situaciones el referí, además de estar continuamente llevando el partido, tiene que estar enseñando, haciendo una labor más didáctica que de arbitraje.

¿Que infl uye más, el reglamento o la interpretación?

GR: Las dos cosas. El reglamento nunca lo dejás de lado pero lo que nosotros priorizamos es el riesgo.

Uno se da cuenta que un jugador hizo foul pero si el que creo el riesgo fue el otro polista, ahí damos vuelta el fallo y penalizamos al que generó el riesgo.

B: Vos te tenés que preguntar quién crea el peligro en la jugada. El riesgo es el factor preponderante a la hora de tomar una decisión.

GR: Son milésimas de segundo en las que tenés que decidir un fallo que puede ser tan determinante como el resultado de un partido. Por eso es extraordinaria toda la ayuda externa que como referí pue-das tener.

Vos te podés sentar en la tribuna en Palermo, durante el Abierto Argen-tino, entre medio de dos jugadores de 10 goles de handicap y cuando suena el silbato por una falta, uno de los 10 de handicap dice “fue foul para allá”, y el otro argumenta: “no fue para el otro equipo”. Entonces a ese nivel, con esa velocidad de juego y nivel de riesgo en las jugadas hay distintas interpretaciones. Por eso hay tantas consultas con el tercer hombre y no esta mal que así sea.

Es tal la velocidad del juego y la genialidad de esos polistas que mu-chas veces un fallo da lugar a inter-pretaciones distintas.

¿Debería ser obligatorio que exis-tan dos referís por partido?

B: Sería buenísimo. Lo promovería a nivel internacional. Contribuiría a un mejor polo a nivel general.GR: En realidad mantener la con-centración durante seis chukkers, ocho en Argentina, es realmente muy difícil. Sobre todo en el polo que se juega hoy en día. Es muy difí-cil no perderte de algo y más en una hora y media de juego. Si se tienen dos jueces en la cancha el polo va a salir mejor y el espectáculo es el que se beneficia.

B: Vos estando solo en los partidos, estás corriendo detrás de las líneas, buscando ángulos, tenés que tener la concentración al máximo y sino la tenés, con equipos tan parejos como existen hoy en día, perjudicas al espectáculo.

Al mismo tiempo tenés que manejar la personalidad de los jugadores, la disciplina, por eso es una tarea muy difícil para un sólo árbitro.

¿El polista conoce el reglamento?GR: Cada vez más. Se preocupan por aprenderlo y se dis-cute más al respecto. De todas formas no lo suficiente.

¿Que signifi ca para un referí arbitrar en Palermo?B: Tiene un atractivo especial. GR: Es la excelencia del deporte y si vos sos partícipe de la misma es que estás en la excelencia del arbitraje.

Visto objetivamente es la culminación de la excelencia en tu actividad.

¿En qué piensa el árbitro antes de que comience la fi nal del Abierto Argentino?

B: En generar un buen espectáculo, ser equilibrado. El juez es parte del juego y siempre va a tener protagonismo, más en el polo. Es muy difícil que no lo tenga.

GR: Es más, los jugadores van a jugar de acuerdo a cuál sea el referí de la final. El partido se va a plantear distinto si está Juan, Pedro o Diego. El jugador tiene clarísimo hasta donde puede ir con tal o cual referee.

¿El polista 10 goles de handicap, también lo es en com-portamiento dentro de la cancha?

B: No necesariamente. Hay diez goles en ambos aspectos y hay 10 goles solo en juego. También hay 10 goles que en su momento lo fueron en todo sentido y tras alcanzar la gloria ya no lo son en comportamiento.

¿Cuándo un árbitro se da cuenta que un partido está arreglado?

B: Te das cuenta enseguida. Por lo general en los partidos arreglados al árbitro lo intentan dejar en una situación incómoda. Lo utilizan de variable y para demostrarle a la tribuna que el partido no está arreglado. En esa situación los jugadores tienen actitudes desmedidas, discusiones, gritos con el juez, todo para cubrirse y disimular con la tribuna.GR: Al minuto te das cuenta si un partido está arreglado

y te sentís pésimo. Te dan ganas de bajarte del caballo y decirles “jueguen ustedes”. Sentís una vergüenza ajena tre-menda, te quitan las ganas de hacer tu trabajo.

¿Qué se puede hacer al respecto?GR: En todas las asociaciones de polo están tratando de hacer algo al respecto pero desgraciadamente todavía no se encontró el camino. Se cambian los sistemas, que las semifinales sean cruzadas, derechas, le buscan la vuelta, pero de alguna manera u otra se da algún arreglo. Ojo que afortunadamente no siempre pasa.

¿Sería ideal unifi car los reglamentos del polo?GR: Estamos todos convencidos de que sería extraordina-rio. Se intentó hace unos años unificar los criterios y todo el mundo estuvo de acuerdo en ello, pero no se pudo.

Si realmente existe la firme voluntad de unificar el regla-

mento tendrían que ser los dirigentes y los propios referís, que son los que están dentro de la cancha y aplican ese reglamento, los que se pongan de acuerdo en ello.¿Sabés cuanto pueden tardar los referís de todo el mundo en po-nerse de acuerdo?En dos horas se soluciona el problema. Lo que pasa es que no citan a los árbitros, es un tema político.

Tendría que haber un comité de árbitros, con referentes de cada país, que se encargue de unificar el reglamento. ¿Quien sabe más de reglas, de los riesgos que hay en el polo y los beneficios para un espectáculo que los referís? Nadie!

Los árbitros van a decir, “señores, el reglamento es éste”, y realmente saben lo que están haciendo. Y ello sería en beneficio del jugador, del espectáculo, de los caballos, de todos.B: Por suerte en algunos lugares donde uno va a hacer de referí siempre realiza un meeting con los jugadores para hablar de las reglas del torneo en particular. Por lo tanto perfectamente se pude hacer a nivel global.●

What motivated you to become polo referees?Gómez Romero: When I started as a referee, there was a real problem with refereeing in polo because the players themselves had to do it; not many people wanted the job because the

matches were a

war and someone impartial was needed.That was when, from the early 1990s, a body of referees was created in Argentina, which was the forerunner of the whole thing. But of course being a referee also has its good side; after all, there must be a reason I’m still doing it.

Baibiene: I played polo and for work reasons I had to stop playing. I saw refereeing as a way of staying involved in polo. It started as a hobby but by the time I realised what I was doing I had spent fourteen years on horseback. Now it’s a profession that I always compare to being an air pilot. The flying hours you do in refereeing allow you to run matches, control players, moods etc.

Must a polo referee have been a player?GR: Absolutely. If you had never played, and professionally I would say, it would be very difficult to run a polo match. Having been a player, the referee is able to interpret and see situations in a way that

would be difficult to understand had you not experienced it on the

field of play.Then, as Matías says, there

are the flying hours with which, through experiences, you learn to

run matches. But you have to know what’s happening on the field.

B: Without a doubt. One thing that has changed quite a lot with so much professional polo in the world and many people starting to make a living from refereeing is that you are doing around 200 matches or more per season and, regardless of the handicap level you are refereeing, it’s a lot.

With so many matches per season, does overdoing it not affect performance?

B: It depends very much on your personality, how you live and handle it. Where you referee is important too. The scenario you are in, in terms of players, pressure, support, is very important. Being a referee in Argentina is like nowhere else in the world.

Does the referee feel supported?GR: It depends where you are. But you always need to be supported. It’s essential, whether it be an association or officials, that they are behind you and give you the support you need to maintain discipline and avoid overdoing it as you say.

I was a referee for three years in the Queen’s Cup in England and that’s where you have the most support. There is an entire organisation behind you and the professionalism with which the refereeing is run in England is impressive. Weekly meetings, conferences, a disciplinary committee, and this is just part of it.

In England you feel better supported because whatever you say or decide is gospel. In other countries this is not so much the case; there are some internal politics that blur your authority.

Does the referee really enjoy the polo match?B: Without a shadow of a doubt.GR: You can enjoy it very much. There are matches that are a less enjoyable, because of the tension, but mostly you enjoy them intensely.

What do you prefer to referee, a low-goal or a high-goal match?

B: A high-goal match, every time.GR: Personally I enjoy a high-goal more. I’m not saying that an 80-goal match is easy to referee, because it’s never easy, but you are concentrating on the play, you know the personalities of the players, and that means that you go with the spectacle better.

B: In an 80-goal match you are part of excellence in the sport. But there also tournaments, like in Sotogrande, where you referee low-goal matches in the morning and a high-goal in the evening, and that’s when you see the massive differences that exist in the sport.

In the low-goal you notice that there are people who are playing polo without knowing the rules. They think that just by swinging a mallet you can play and in these situations the referee, in addition to staying on top of the match, has to teach the players, playing the role of a teacher more than a referee.

What is important, the rules or your interpretation?GR: Both. You never leave the rules aside but the thing we prioritise is the risk. You notice that a player fouls but if I think it was the other player that created the risk then I will penalise the person who generated the risk.

B: You have to ask yourself who made the play dangerous. Risk is the overriding factor when it comes to making a decision.

GR: You have milliseconds in which to decide a foul that could be as decisive as the result of the match. This is why any external help you can get as a referee is crucial.

You can be sitting in the stands at Palermo, in the Argentine Open, between two 10-goal players, and when the whistle is blown for a foul, one of the 10-goalers says, “that foul’s for such and such”, and the other says, “no it’s for the other team”. At that level, with that speed of play and level of risk in the game, there are different interpretations. That’s why the third man gets consulted so much and this is no bad thing.

B: It would be fantastic. I would encourage it internationally. It

would contribute to ensuring better polo across the board.GR: The reality is that concentrating for six chukkas, or eight in Argentina, is really very difficult. Particularly in the polo that is played these days. It’s very difficult not to miss something and even more so in an hour and a half of play. If there are two referees on the polo field it will turn out better and the spectacle will benefit.

B: When you are alone in the matches, you have to run behind the lines, look for angles, you have to stay fully concentrated, and if you don’t, with teams as evenly matched as they are these days, you can

have an adverse effect on the spectacle. At the same time you have to deal with the players’ personalities and discipline, which is why it’s a very difficult task for just one referee.

Do the polo players know the rules?GR: Increasingly. They take an interest in learning them and discuss them more. But even so it’s not enough.

What does refereeing at Palermo mean to a referee?

B: It has a special appeal.

GR: It’s the cream of the sport and if you are involved it’s because you are the cream of the referees.

Seen objectively it’s the result of excellence in your work.

What does a referee think about

just before the fi nal of the Argentine Open?

B: In creating a good spectacle, in being balanced. The referee is part of the game and will always play a leading role, especially in polo. It’s very difficult for this not to be the case.

GR: What’s more, the players will play differently depending on who is refereeing the final. The match will be approached differently depending on who the referee is. The players know precisely what they can do with such and such a referee.

Is a 10-goal player also a 10-goaler as far as his behaviour on the fi eld is concerned?

B: Not necessarily. There are 10-goalers in both aspects and 10-goalers just in their play. There are also 10-goalers who at one point were superb in every sense and having reached glory they no longer are in terms of behaviour.

How does a referee know that a match has been fi xed?

B: You realise immediately. Generally, in fixed matches they try to put the referee in an uncomfortable position. They use you as a variable to show the grandstand that the match is not fixed. In these situations the players have disproportionate attitudes, arguments, shouting at the referee, all to cover up and fool the spectators.GR: You realise straight away if a match has been fixed and you feel dreadful. You feel like getting off your horse and saying “play on your own”. You feel huge shame on behalf of the players; they take away your desire to do your job.

What can you do in these situations?

GR: All of the polo associations are attempting to do something about it but unfortunately the right path has not yet been found. The elimination system for the semi-finals is changed, to make them straight; they try and work around the problem, but one way or another one or two fixed matches happen. But fortunately it doesn’t always happen.

Would it be good to unify the polo rules?

GR: We are all sure that it would be

fantastic. There was an attempt to unify the criteria a few years ago and everyone agreed on it, but it didn’t happen.

If there is really a firm desire to unify the rules, it would have to be the officials and the referees themselves, as the people who are on the field and apply these rules, who agree on what to do.

Do you know how long it would take the referees from around the world to agree? The problem could be resolved in a couple of hours. The problem is that the referees are not brought together; it’s a political thing.

There would have to be a committee of referees, with representatives from each country, responsible for unifying the rules. Who knows more about the rules, the risks that exist in polo and the benefits for a spectacle than the referees? Nobody!

The referees are going to say, “ladies and gentlemen, these are the rules”, and they really know what they are doing. It would benefit the players, the spectacle and the horses, everyone.

B: Luckily in some places where you go and referee there is always a meeting with the players to talk about the rules that are specific to the tournament. This could easily be done globally. ●

Polo Club Saint Tropez vive por estas fechas un intenso y selecto calendario de torneos que

congrega, como en todas las temporadas, a polistas de primer nivel y destacados patrones.

l torneo que celebró el 11º Aniversario del Polo Club Saint Tropez comenzó a ca-lentar la temporada de alto nivel polístico en el exclusi-vo balneario francés.

Cinco equipos de 12 a 15 goles de han-dicap, provenientes de Pakistán, Alema-nia, Inglaterra, Francia y Mónaco for-maron parte de este certamen.

F Polo Team, conformado por Alshair Fiyaz, Justin Gaunt, Matías Nigoul y Martín Espain, se quedó con el título tras derrotar en la final a Techno Polo por un ajustado 6 a 5.

Tras el torneo aniversario llegó el turno de uno de los puntos fuertes de cada temporada en Saint Tropez, la Interna-tional Polo Cup.

El campeonato, de dos semanas de du-ración, congregó a 10 equipos de 12 a 15 goles de handicap.

Tras una intensa y disputada clasifica-ción los equipos de Maybach y Hublot se ganaron merecidamente su pase a la final proclamándose campeón Hublot tras ganar el decisivo encuentro 9.5 a 8.

La copa subsidiaria fue a parar a manos de Villa Sesta que dio cuenta de Wasabi por 10 a 7.5.

El Open de Gassin fue otra de las im-portantes escalas en Saint Tropez Polo. Ocho equipos de 12 a 15 goles se en-frentaron en las canchas del exclusivo club durante una semana y media ofre-

ciendo un gran nivel polístico que tuvo una selecta grada durante cada uno de los partidos.

Saint Tropez, con Corinne Schuler (pre-sidente del Polo Club Saint Tropez), Francisco Irastorza, Juan Martín García Laborde y Julián de Lusarreta, se procla-mó campeón tras vencer en la final a F Polo Team 11 a 8.

El tercer puesto correspondió a La Cam-pana (Kristian Petersson, Juan José Ara-ya, Edouardo Miles y Joaquín Maiquez) luego de superar a Wasabi por 11 a 5.5.

Following the anniversary tournament it was the turn of one of the main attractions of the Saint Tropez season: the International Polo Cup.

Following an intense and hard-fought qualifying round, the Maybach and Hublot teams deservedly secured a place in the final of the competition, and Hublot were crowned champions after winning the match by 9.5 goals to 8.

LA FINALIZACIÓNNo existe ningún deporte en el que se

pueda actuar bien desde una posición desequilibrada. Cuando se termina de golpear la bocha, todo el peso del cuerpo debe estar inclinado hacia delante.Si esto se hace desde una posición desequilibrada, la parte superior del

cuerpo volverá a la montura antes de haber golpeado la bocha. Eso restará toda la potencia al disparo y eliminará las probabilidades de establecer un contacto adecuado con la bocha.Para corregir esto, es necesario comenzar el movimiento del golpe sentado. Esto significa que hay que comenzar a ponerse de pie y a inclinarse hacia delante cuando el taco está en paralelo con el suelo o pasando a la altura del hombro. De esta forma se consume menos tiempo poniéndose de pie e intentando mantener el equilibrio. La idea es utilizar toda la potencia de la parte superior del cuerpo conforme el peso se desplaza hacia delante en el momento del impacto.

UN BUEN GOLPE1) Brazo recto.2) Hombro izquierdo en dirección a la bocha (al hacer esto se crea una buena rotación).3) Las rodillas agarran la parte inferior de la montura, lo que permite que la parte superior se mueva con libertad.

Como he dicho antes, creo que el equilibrio es muy importante y para estar equilibrado es necesario sentirse seguro en la montura. Si no se siente seguro al ponerse de pie para realizar

el disparo, perderá el equilibrio automáticamente, por lo que no le dará a la bocha o la golpeará de forma incorrecta.

CONSEJOS SOBRE LOS QUE PENSAR1 - Agárrese fuerte a la montura.2 - Los ojos deben mirar hacia abajo para ver completamente la bocha.3 - El pecho debe apuntar hacia delante, NO hacia el suelo.4 - Al mirar hacia la bocha, no hay que enterrar la barbilla en el pecho. Esto interferirá con el golpe y no permitirá que el taco le siga.

ROTACIÓNLa línea de los hombros debe

THE SETUPIf you can start from a quality setup position, then you are likely to make a good swing.

1 - Good Grip:You must hold or grip your mallet properly.

2- Good Posture:Your legs should keep a strong grip on the saddle so that your upper body is held in balance.

3 - Proper Aim:You must aim properly.

4- Good eye Contact:Always keep your eye on the ball!

THE FINISHThere is not one sport that can be performed well from an off ba-lance position. When you finish hitting the ball, all your body weight should be leaning forward.When you finish off-balance your upper body will be coming back to the saddle before you hit the ball. That will take all the power away from the shot and eliminate your chances of making proper contact with the ball.

To correct this, start the motion of your swing in a seated position. This means that you have to start standing up and leaning forward when the mallet is parallel to the ground or passing shoulder level. This way you will spend less time standing up trying to keep your balance. The idea is to use all the power of your upper body as its weight shifts forward at the moment of impact.

3) The knees are gripping the lower body to the saddle, yet letting the upper body move freely.I believe, like I’ve said before, that balance is very important, and to get balance you must feel safe in the saddle. If you don’t feel safe when you stand up to make a shot, you will lose your balance automatically, either missing the ball or hitting it wrongly.

PREVIA DEL TORNEO INTERNACIONAL DE POLOLa antesala del torneo de verano que organiza Santa María Polo Club tuvo dos torneos de gran nivel que no hicieron más que generar mayor expectativa para el certamen más importante de la temporada. El Memorial Zobel y el Torneo Toñanejo dejaron ver en acción algunos de los equipos que participan en el torneo de verano y sobre todo permitieron disfrutar de un polo de gran nivel en las canchas de Río, Puente de Hierro y Ayala Polo Club.

Santa María se adjudicó la edición 2009 del Torneo Fundador Zóbel tras vencer en la final a Woodchester por 9 a 6.

De esta forma el cuarteto, que en esta ocasión formó con Ramón y Pablo Mora Figueroa, Juan Lozada y Tomás Fernández Llorente (h), se transformó en el protagonista de la temporada previa al Torneo Internacional de Verano.

La final del Torneo Fundador Zóbel se disputó en las canchas del Ayala Polo Club. Santa María dominó las acciones de principio a fin y tras un arrollador comienzo, donde llegó a estar 6 a 0, controló el trámite en los chukkers siguientes en los cuáles su victoria nunca corrió peligro.

El encuentro decisivo fue seguido por una numerosa grada que tras el partido y la entrega de premios disfrutó de un riquísimo asado a cargo de Manoco.

En la final Subsidiaria, Sevens Sevens derrotó a Dr. A - Isola 7 a 5.5.

Las fases previas a la final se disputaron en las canchas de Río del Santa María Polo Club.El Torneo Toñanejo, que organizó el

El Torneo Toñanejo convocó a las categorías mediano y bajo handicap siendo cuatro los equipos participantes en el primer nivel y tres en el bajo.

En el mediano handicap, Woodchester se adjudicó el certamen tras vencer en la final a Seven Sevens por 14 a 10.

En el bajo handicap, el cuarteto de El Rosario fue el mejor posicionado en el triangular.

La jornada final marcó un encuentro muy igualado en el mediano handicap entre Woodchester y Seven Sevens.

La final comenzó con dominio del equipo ganador, compuesto por Martín Iturraspe, Luciano Irazábal, Mario Gómez y Walter Garbuglia. Este cuarteto logró una ventaja de 6 a 1 en el inicio del encuentro.Lejos estuvo Seven Sevens de rendirse y tras varios chukkers de dura lucha llegó a remontar el score adverso e igualar las acciones en el cuarto período.En el quinto y decisivo chukker, Woodchester reaccionó y logró el resultado decisivo de 14 a 10 para llevarse el título.

Previo a la final, Santa María se quedó con la copa subsidiaria al vencer a Isola-Dr.A por 10 a 8.5.

Por su parte, en el bajo handicap, El Rosario derrotó a Dr.A por 13 a 12. ●

Santa María are champions of the Fundador Zóbel TournamentSanta María won the 2009 Fundador Zóbel Tournament after beating Woodchester in the final by 9 goals to 6.

With this result, the Santa María quartet, on this occasion made up of Ramón and Pablo Mora Figueroa, Juan Lozada and Tomás Fernández Llorente (junior), became the stars of the lead-up to the Summer International Tournament.

The final of the Fundador Zóbel tournament was held on the Ayala Polo Club fields in front of a large crowd.

Santa María dominated the proceedings from beginning to end and, following an overwhelming start in which they gained a 6-0 lead, they controlled the match in the subsequent chukkas, in which their advantage never looked in danger.

The final was watched by a large crowd who, following the game and the prize-giving ceremony, enjoyed a delicious barbecue offered by Manoco.

In the subsidiary final, Sevens Sevens defeated Dr A-Isola by 7 goals to 5.5.

The rounds prior to the final were held at Santa María Polo Club’s Río fields.

Woodchester crowned champions of Toñanejo TournamentThe Toñanejo Tournament, organised by Santa María Polo Club and held on their Puente de Hierro fields, acted as a prelude to the 38th Summer International Tournament now taking place in Sotogrande.

The Toñanejo Tournament was played in the medium- and low-goal categories, with four and three teams taking part in each group respectively.

In the medium-goal competition, Woodchester won the contest after beating Seven Sevens in the final by 14 goals to 10.

In the low-goal competition, the El Rosario quartet finished top in the triangular tournament.The final day saw a very close-fought match in the medium-goal between Woodchester and Seven Sevens.

The final started with the winning team of Martín Iturraspe, Luciano Irazábal, Mario Gómez and Walter Garbuglia dominating, with the side securing a 6-1 lead early in the encounter.

But Seven Sevens had no intention of giving up and after fighting hard for several chukkas they managed to make up the deficit and level the match in the fourth period.

In the fifth and final chukka, Woodchester reacted and finished the game on 14 goals to 10 to win the title.

Prior to the final, Santa María clinched the subsidiary cup by beating Isola-Dr A by 10 goals to 8.5.

In the low-goal competition, El Rosario defeated Dr A by 13 goals to 12. ●

Cambiaso regresa a EEUU El mejor jugador de polo del mundo, Adol-fo Cambiaso, regresará en el 2010 a Estados Unidos para disputar la Triple Corona.El regreso será de la mano del patrón Geor-ge Rawlings y su equipo Crab Orchard con quien levantó el trofeo del Abierto de Esta-dos Unidos en el 2007 y 2008.Crab Orchard contará también en su equipo con los 8 goles de handicap, Julio Arellano e Hilario Ulloa, por lo que será, seguramente, uno de los equipos a batir durante la Triple Corona americana que se disputa en el In-ternational Polo Club de Palm Beach.

(FIP), Asociación Argentina de Polo (AAP), Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) y United States Polo Association (USPA), se reunieron sobre finales de julio en Londres para intercambiar opiniones e ideas sobre el futuro del polo.

Entre los puntos más sobresalientes de la reunión estuvieron el fortalecimien-to de la relación entre la FIP y las tres asociaciones de polo más importantes del mundo (AAP, HPA y USPA) y la or-ganización de eventos de alto handicap, como el disputado en Deauville entre Ellerstina y La Dolfina.

También se discutió sobre la necesidad de seguir trabajando en un reglamento único para los torneos internacionales, el doping en el polo y un mayor apoyo para el polo femenino e infantil.

Por otra parte, la FIP estableció que el próximo mundial de polo se jugará en dos fases. En el 2011 se disputará la fase de clasificación y la rueda final será al año siguiente. También se habló sobre las posibilidades de las tres sedes can-didatas que existen al momento, entre ellas España.●
