Dear Parent, On Monday November 19, 2018, we will be doing our annual outreach project for Thanksgiving. Each grade will be assigned certain fruit or other items to bring to school. We are asking the children to bring fruit, crackers and hard candies to school, along with baskets, if you have any, to make fruit baskets for our parish shut-ins. (If you have baskets, please send them to school ASAP, so I can get a count.) Also, if you have any ribbon (one inch wide) for bows, we would appreciate that, too! The fruit can be sent to school on Monday, November 20th . There are 45 shut-ins in our parish. We would like to put the baskets together and deliver them that same day, if possible . If you have any names of people you would like us to make and deliver a basket to, please let me know. If you would like to help us in either making up the baskets or with the delivery, please come and join us in the Conference Center at 8:00 a.m. Any of that time you can volunteer would be greatly appreciated. We will need help, especially with delivering the baskets. You can easily make it a little Thanksgiving "project" for your child, walking to the shut-ins doors and giving them the basket. Be assured the people appreciate seeing the children more than words can say. It truly brightens their day. We also deliver to the local Nursing homes and police/fire stations. Thank you in advance for your support. Here is the list of fruit for each grade to bring to school. Presented by SPEAK UP for BEN, Inc.

When: Saturday December 1, 2018 from 7:00-9:00pm;

doors open at 6:00pm for resources, book sales, and networking Where: Liberty High School, 1115 Linden St., Bethlehem, PA 18017

Donations will be gratefully accepted for The Ben Miller Memorial Scholarship at Kolbe Academy, the first addiction recovery high school in the Lehigh Valley,

opening fall 2019 in Bethlehem. Synopsis: Nearly every American knows someone who has been affected by the opioid epidemic, or has been affected themselves. Addiction impacts individuals from every walk of life, fueled by a powerful pharmaceutical industry with a direct financial interest in encouraging the abuse of prescription painkillers. Millions of Americans, tired of watching their loved ones die while politicians ignore this issue, offering platitudes instead of plans, are asking themselves: Where is the solution? Where is the hope? Where’s the outrage? Ryan Hampton is a young man who has made addiction and recovery reform his life’s mission. Through the wildly successful non-profit organization Facing Addiction, Hampton has been rocketed to the center of America’s rising recovery movement ― quickly emerging as the de facto thought leader of the national conversation on addiction. As a person in recovery from heroin addiction himself, he understands firsthand how easy it is to develop a dependency on opioids, and how destructive that dependency can quickly become. Now, he is waging a permanent campaign to change our way of thinking about and addressing addiction in this country. In his newly released book, American Fix — Inside the Opioid Addiction Crisis and How to End It, Hampton discusses his own struggle with addiction, outlines the challenges that the recovery movement currently faces, and offers a concrete plan of action towards making America’s addiction crisis a thing of the past. In this spirited round table discussion with Hampton and prominent community leaders, our thoughts about the opioid crisis will be challenged—and clear action steps on how to end it will be addressed. American Fix will be available for purchase at the event; a book signing will follow.

About The Kolbe Academy: Opening in Fall 2019 in Hanover Township, Bethlehem, Kolbe Academy will be the first addiction recovery high school in the Lehigh Valley, and the first faith-based recovery high school in the nation! Operated by the Diocese of Allentown, the Kolbe Academy will begin enrollment in January 2019 (please refer to informational flyers for additional details.) The Ben Miller Memorial Scholarship is being established to enable Lehigh Valley students in recovery to have access to a safe, supportive, therapeutic educational environment critical to long-term recovery. www.kolbe-academy.com About SPEAK UP for BEN, Inc: After the tragic death by fentanyl poisoning of their 23-year-old son and brother, Ben, the Miller family of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has sought to speak up and raise awareness to the dangers of opioid use, to destigmatize substance use disorder, and remove the barriers so that sufferers and their families receive help and support. Like so many young people, Ben had difficulty finding his voice. A sensitive, caring, and creative young man who struggled with anxiety and depression, Ben wanted to please others, but in doing so lacked assertiveness and resiliency skills to advocate for his own needs. Ben also experienced the trauma of bullying which contributed to his anxiety. This inability to speak up resulted in Ben succumbing to peer pressure, leading to recreational drug use. After being prescribed a generous opioid prescription for oral surgery, Ben became addicted. Ben battled substance use disorder more than eight arduous years, and attempted to overcome it through nine inpatient rehab treatments and a spiritual awakening through Alcoholics Anonymous. While Ben’s life was cut short, his legacy will live on by providing hope and resources to many in need. Our Mission Statement: Through compassion and understanding of the family disease of addiction, we seek to provide education, support, comfort and healing to people who are at risk for, experiencing, or recovering from Substance Use Disorder, their families, and the families of those who lost their battle. In honor of the life of Benjamin Alden Miller (8/8/92—8/1/16), please SPEAK UP for BEN — and all the Bens in the world who struggle to find their voice.
