MOD 16 CARBURETION AND INJECTION

Carburetion: It is all the physical processes that prepare the mixture air-fuel mixture for combustion inside the engines cylinders.

Carburetor: device that prepares this mixture

MOD 16 FLOAT CARBURETOR A. MAIN METERING SYSTEM

a. Venturi (or diffuser) is the main body of the carburetor. It has a narrow passage or venturi throat. As the air flows through the venturi speed increases and pressure drops. This decrease suctions or drags part of the fuel that is located in the tube.

b. Float clamber Function: to keep fuel levels constant through the needle valve, which is installed in the fuel inlet. This valve opens and closes the entrance hole to the float chamber depending on fuel levels. As the float rises, the needle valve begins to close. Once the fuel is at the correct upper level the float closes completely and the needle valve stops the flow of fuel. This process repeats continuously.

A. MAIN METERING SYSTEMc. Throttle Valve (Sometimes referred to as butterfly valve) consists of a flat, circular piece of metal that is alwaysinstalled between the venturi and the engine. It is moved fromthe cockpit by engine air level. Function: To meter the amountof air that passes to the cylinders through out the venturi.

MOD 16 INJECTION CARBURETORMAIN METERING SYSTEMOperation: As filtered air enters the carburetor body, some of it flows into an impact pressure annulus around the venturi.

As impact air enters the annulus, it’s velocity decreases as it’s pressure increases. From the annulus, the impact air in directed into chamber air of the regulator unit, where it presses against one side of the inner (left side) diaphragm.

At the same time, low pressure air from within the venturi is vented to chamber B where it acts on the opposite side of the inner diaphragm.

MAIN METERING SYSTEMOperation (Continuation) The difference between the impact pressure in chamber A and the suction, or low pressure in chamber B causes the inner diaphragm to move an amount that is proportional to the volume of air entering the engine.

The force produced by the pressure differential between chambers A and B is often referred to as the air metering force and is proportional to the amount of air that flows through the venturi.

MOD 16 INJECTION CARBURETORMAIN METERING SYSTEM Operation (Continued) As the air metering force builds, it overcomes spring tension and opensa poppet valve. As the poppet valve opens, a regulated amount ofpressurized fuel is allowed into chamber D. As regulated fuel fillschamber D, it pushes against the outer regulator diaphragm in anattempt to close the poppet valve. This fuel metering force balances theair metering force to hold the poppet valve off its seat an amount that isproportional to the volume of air entering the engine.

MODULE 16 INJECTION CARBURETORMAIN METERING SYSTEM Operation (Continuation)When the engine is idling, an insufficient amount of airflow exists to produce a steady air metering force to open the poppet valve. Therefore the coil spring is provided in chamber A to supplement the air metering force. At idle speeds, spring tension forces the diaphragm over and opens the poppet valve to provide the fuel pressure required to allow the engine to idle.
