Durante los últimos cien años, Puerto Rico nunca había sido golpeado por un evento atmosférico tan catastrófico como el huracán María. Con una ira descontrolada, la tormenta golpeó a una nación ya agonizante a causa de una economía enferma. María levantó el velo que cubría a Puerto Rico exponiendo al mundo la dura realidad: la pobreza, la desigualdad y el sufrimiento que obligaron a miles de ciudadanos a abandonar la isla en busca de un futuro mejor.

La imagen es triste y a veces surrealista. Vivimos en dos dimensiones diametralmente opuestas. El área metropolitana es la afortunada, donde el gobierno ha restaurado muchos servicios esenciales como la electricidad y el agua potable. En las regiones montañosas, no hay indicios de que en los próximos meses verán el restablecimiento de estos servicios más básicos. Ciento cuarenta días después del huracán María, una parte de Puerto Rico vive en la oscuridad, con el servicio eléctrico restaurado en solo el 60% de los hogares. Miles de familias siguen sin hogar, en algunos casos con una escasez de alimentos y un servicio celular limitado, en condiciones deplorables de salud pública.

Las organizaciones culturales no han estado exentas de la embestida de este terrible huracán. Fuertes inundaciones destruyeron bibliotecas y museos. Las obras de arte, exposiciones y documentos históricos se deterioran día a día por la exposición a la humedad y los hongos. Nuestros artistas sufren las pérdidas de sus lugares de trabajo.

Afortunadamente, la Fundación no tuvo pérdidas materiales. Nuestro Concilio se ha unido a una coalición de organizaciones culturales en Puerto Rico para ayudar a rescatar a nuestros artistas y nuestra cultura. Hemos facilitado el acceso a fondos de emergencia del National Endowment for the Humanities de cual, hasta el momento, ya se han beneficiado más de 20 instituciones para un total de fondos otorgados de $611,313. En enero, la FPH abrió una convocatoria especial para apoyar proyectos de preservación y conservación, alrededor de seis instituciones solicitaron fondos de esta iniciativa. Además, hemos creado una cuenta a través de Gofundme.com para apoyar a artistas y organizaciones culturales.

Recuerdo el día después del huracán, vi cientos de árboles sin hojas, sus troncos secos y partidos. Ciento cuarenta días después, los árboles vuelven a ponerse verdes. Puerto Rico reverdece y también se levantará. Ha sido precisamente esa fibra humana de la solidaridad, empatía, creatividad e innovación lo que impulsará a Puerto Rico a seguir adelante. Over the last one hundred years, Puerto Rico was never hit by an atmospheric event as catastrophic as Hurricane María. With an uncontrolled anger, the storm hit a nation already agonized by an ailing economy. María lifted the veil that covered Puerto Rico. It exposed the world to harsh realities—the poverty, inequality, and suffering that forced thousands of citizens to leave the island in search of a better future.

The picture is sad and sometimes surreal. We live in two diametrically

opposed dimensions. The metropolitan area is the fortunate one, where the government has restored many essential services such as electricity and drinking water. In the mountainous regions, there is no indication that the coming months will see the return of the most basic services. One hundred and forty days after Hurricane María, much of Puerto Rico lives in the dark, with power restored to just 60% of households. Thousands of families remain homeless, in some cases enduring food shortages and limited cell service, in deplorable conditions of public health.

Cultural organizations have not been exempt from the onslaught of this terrible hurricane. Heavy floods destroyed libraries and museums. Works of art, exhibitions, and historical documents deteriorate day by day from exposure to humidity and fungi. Our artists suffer the losses of their workplaces.

Fortunately, FPH had no material losses. The council has joined a coalition of cultural organizations in Puerto Rico to help rescue our artists and our culture. We have provided access to emergency funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities of which, to date, more than 20 institutions have already benefited for a total of $ 611,313 granted funds. In January, the FPH opened a Grant Recovery Program to support preservation and conservation projects, around six institutions have requested funds from this initiative. Also, we have set up an account (via Gofundme.com) to support artists and cultural organizations.

I remember the day after the hurricane. I saw hundreds of trees without leaves, their trunks dry and split. One hundred and forty days later, the trees grow green again. Puerto Rico, too, will rise. 40th anniversary of the FPH. To commemorate the 40 years of the Puerto Rican Endowment for the Humanities, we will be presenting a series of festivities during the course of 2018. A television program, publications, an exhibition of artistic materials, and a grand concluding activity are some of the events we will present. The Endowment is a non-profit organization founded in 1977 by a group of Puerto Ricans distinguished in the Humanities. The Endowment is one of the State Councils of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), an agency dedicated to research, education and public dissemination of the humanities.

Over the years, the Endowment has developed a variety of educational programs for the benefit of the community, educational institutions, public and private entities and cultural centers in Puerto Rico. Below some of the most important events of the past 40 years.

40 aniversario de la FPH. Con motivo de la conmemoración de los 40 años de la Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades (FPH), estaremos llevando a cabo una serie de festividades en el transcurso del año 2018. Publicaciones, programa de televisión, exposición de material gráfico y un gran cierre son algunas de las actividades que estaremos celebrando. Mantente conectado a la página web de la Fundación y a nuestras redes sociales (Facebook, Twitter e Instagram) para más detalles y las fecha de cada una de estas actividades, para que nos acompañes y seas parte de esta gran celebración.

La Fundación es una organización sin fines de lucro fundada en 1977 por un grupo de distinguidos puertorriqueños en humanidades. La Institución es uno de los Concilios estatales del National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), una agencia dedicada a apoyar la investigación, la educación y la difusión pública de las humanidades.

Con el transcurso de los años, la Fundación ha desarrollado una variedad de programas educativos con el fin de beneficiar a la comunidad, instituciones educativas, entidades públicas y privadas y centros culturales en Puerto Rico. A continuación los eventos más relevantes en los pasado 40 años.


Taller Cultural. A raíz del paso del Huracán María por nuestra Isla, la Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades (FPH) se unió a la recuperación del país aportando un espacio de “terapia cultural” a refugiados del Huracán. Durante el mes de noviembre y en colaboración con el Departamento de la Familia, la FPH llevó a cabo dos talleres creativos de desarrollo del arte y lectura de cuento como herramienta terapéutica para personas que viven temporeramente en refugios del área noreste del país. A esta iniciativa se unió el grupo Gente y Cuentos, dirigidos por la Prof.ª Alma Concepción de Gracia y representados en la actividad por la Prof.ª Haydée Zayas, y la artesana Faviana Silva. El grupo tuvo a su cargo la lectura del cuento y en el marco del contenido de dicho cuento, desarrollaron, junto a la artista, su percepción de la lectura en una pintura en canvas. El cuento escogido para los talleres fue La prodigiosa tarde de Baltasar del afamado escritor Gabriel García Márquez.

Debido al éxito del proyecto, la FPH tomó la decisión de extender el mismo a otros grupos que se pueden beneficiar de las actividades. Por tal razón, el pasado viernes, 15 de diciembre se ofreció el taller en el Hogar Santa Teresa Jornet en San Juan.

Cultural Workshop. In the wake of Hurricane María through our Island, the Puerto Rican Endowment for the Humanities (FPH) joined the recovery efforts of the country by providing a space of “cultural therapy” to refugees from the Hurricane. During the month of November and in collaboration with the Family Department, the FPH carried out two creative workshops on art development and story reading as a therapeutic tool for people who temporarily live in shelters in the northeast area of the country. The group Gente y Cuentos, directed by Prof. Alma Concepción de Gracia and represented in the activity by Prof. Haydée Zayas, and the artisan Faviana Silva, joined this initiative. The group was in charge of reading the story and within the context of the content of the story, they developed, together with the artist, their perception of the reading in a canvas painting. The story chosen for the workshops was La prodigiosa tarde de Baltasar by the famous writer Gabriel García Márquez. Due to the success of the project, the FPH decided to extend it to other groups that can benefit from the activities. For this reason, last Friday, December 15, the workshop was offered at the Santa Teresa Jornet Nursing Home in San Juan.

Humanist of the Year 2017. This award is granted to individuals who have distinguished themselves, throughout their lives, through their work, their teaching and other activities, by making significant contributions to the dissemination of the humanities in Puerto Rico. The award, which was created in 1979, has been given on previous occasions to a select group of humanists such as: Concha Meléndez, Enrique Laguerre, Ricardo Alegría, Luis González Vales, Arturo Morales Carrión, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Antonio Martorell, Ana Helvia Quintero, Ángel Quintero and, most recently, to Arcadio Díaz Quiñonez. This year, the event will honor Dr. Carmen T. Ruiz de Fischler.

The Endowment awards her the prize in recognition of her commitment and dedication as a university professor, art historian, cultural promoter and creator, and administrator of museums and governmental institutions. Dr. Ruiz has dedicated her life to the art of museum management. She has been a leader of the most prestigious Museums and Art Institutions of Puerto Rico, including the Puerto Rico Museum of Art and the Ponce Museum of Art. She was director of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and has worked with renowned institutions such as the American Association of Museums and the National Endowment for the Arts. The selection of the Humanist of the Year takes place annually and the winner is recognized publicly in a ceremony in which he or she presents a lecture. This year, the activity will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018 at the Raúl Juliá Theater of the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico.

Humanista del Año 2017. Esta distinción se confiere a personas que han hecho, a través de su vida, en su obra, en su cátedra y en diversas actividades, aportaciones significativas a la difusión del saber humanístico puertorriqueño. El homenaje, que se originó en el 1979, ha sido dedicado en ocasiones anteriores a un selecto grupo de humanistas como: Concha Meléndez, Enrique Laguerre, Ricardo Alegría, Luis González Vales, Arturo Morales Carrión, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Antonio Martorell, Ana Helvia Quintero, Ángel Quintero y más recientemente a Arcadio Díaz Quiñonez. En esta ocasión la actividad será dedicada a la Dra. Carmen T. Ruiz de Fischler.

La Fundación le otorga el premio en reconocimiento a su compromiso y dedicación como profesora universitaria, historiadora del arte, promotora y gestora cultural y administradora de museos e instituciones gubernamentales. La Dra. Ruiz ha dedicado su vida al arte de la museografíay ha sido líder de los más prestigiosos Museos e Instituciones de Arte del país incluyendo el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico y el Museo de Arte de Ponce. Dirigió el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña y ha colaborado con Instituciones de renombre como la American Association of Museum y el National Endowment for the Arts. La selección del Humanista se hace anualmente y se reconoce públicamente en una ceremonia donde los homenajeados dictan una conferencia magistral. La actividad se llevará a cabo el viernes, 16 de marzo de 2018 a las 6:30 de la tarde en el Teatro Raúl Juliá del Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico.


Sabana Grande, Ruta arquitectónica Cultural es una publicación del Centro Cultural Dr. Manuel Quevedo Báez auspiciada por la Fundación, que se realizó con motivo de la celebración del bicentenario de la fundación del pueblo de Sabana Grande. La misma pretende divulgar una ruta que ilustre los edificios históricos, lugares de interés, así como, las costumbres y tradiciones sabaneñas.

La publicación, que sirve como guía turística, expone estructuras que han marcado el desarrollo del patrimonio edificado de la arquitectura sabaneña. Se reseñan un total de 35 estructuras las cuales se concentran en su mayor parte en el casco urbano del pueblo. Cada estructura se presenta con una foto y una breve descripción que incluye los datos históricos, la descripción arquitectónica, su uso actual y alguna curiosidad. Además, la guía incluye un mapa con su leyenda que identifica la ruta a seguir y aquellos lugares de interés para los visitantes. Algunas de las estructuras presentadas son: Teatro Adalberto Rodríguez “Machuchal”, Parroquia San Isidro Labrador y Santa María de la Cabeza, Residencia Ivonne Quiñones (Antigua Residencia Emilio García), Plaza de Recreo José A. Busigó

Sabana Grande, Architectural Cultural Route, is a publication of the Dr. Manuel Quevedo Báez Cultural Center sponsored by the Endowment. It was produced to celebrate the bicentennial of the founding of the town of Sabana Grande. Its purpose is to describe a route that features historical buildings, sites of interest, and the customs and traditions of Sabana Grande.

The publication, which serves as a tourism guide, shows structures that have marked the development of Sabana Grande’s architectural heritage. Thirty-five structures are described, most of them located in the urban center of the town. Each structure is presented with a photo and a brief description that includes historical facts, an architectural description, the building’s current use and unusual facts. Additionally, the guide includes a map with a legend that identifies the route to follow and sites of interest for visitors. Some of the structures presented are: the Adalberto Rodríguez “Machuchal” Theater, the San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza Parish, the Ivonne Quiñones house (former Emilio García house), José A. Busigó Acevedo Plaza, the Batatero Train water tower, the Masonic Cemetery of Sabana Grande and the Quilichini Estate (former San Francisco Estate).

Humanistas Destacados es una producción de Sistema TV, Canal Universitario del Sistema Ana G. Méndez, auspiciado por la Fundación. La misma está compuesta por 38 cápsulas educativas dedicadas a resaltar la vida y obra de una serie de personalidades destacadas en alguna disciplina humanística. Las cápsulas incluyen una breve biografía, fotos, reseñas y la aportación realizada a la sociedad puertorriqueña. Los humanistas presentados han sido a su vez distinguidos como Humanistas del Año de la Fundación.

Las cápsulas incluyen personalidades de la talla de Concha Meléndez, Enrique Laguerre, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Antonio Martorell, José Ferrer Canales, María de los Ángeles Castro, Ricardo Alegría, Isabel Gutiérrez y Flavia Lugo Espiñeiro, entre otros. La producción estuvo a cargo de Flavia García y Luzzie Muñiz y contó con el locutor Michael Santana quien da voz a cada pieza. Según el Dr. César Rey, el proyecto “...trata de rescatar la historia de grandes mujeres y hombres que han aportado a nuestro País, en particular al enriquecimiento de nuestra cultura e identidad colectiva. Son importantes humanistas puertorriqueños, de formación holística y de un bagaje intelectual muy significativo que, en momentos como el que vivimos, se hace necesario reafirmar porque, puertorriqueñas y puertorriqueños de esa calidad, nos devuelven el optimismo y la esperanza de saber que Puerto Rico es valioso por su gente y con su gente”.

Outstanding Humanists is a production of Sistema TV/Channel 40, the Ana G. Méndez University System Channel, sponsored by the Endowment. It consists of 38 educational segments dedicated to highlighting the lives and work of a series of outstanding people in the humanities disciplines. The segments include a brief biography, photos, reviews of their work and their contributions to Puerto Rican society. The persons presented have been recipients of the Endowment’s Humanist of the Year award.

The segments include personalities of such stature as Concha Meléndez, Enrique Laguerre, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Antonio Martorell, José Ferrer Canales, María de los Ángeles Castro, Ricardo Alegría, Isabel Gutiérrez and Flavia Lugo Espiñeiro, among others. Flavia García and Luzzie Muñiz were in charge of the production and narrator Michael Santana lends his voice to each work. Dr. César Rey says the project “tries to rescue the stories of great women and men who have contributed to our nation, in particular to the enrichment of our culture and collective identity. They are important Puerto Rican humanists, with holistic preparation and very significant intellectual weight who, in times such as these, should be reaffirmed because Puerto Ricans of this quality revive the optimism and hope of knowing that Puerto Rico is valuable for its people and with its people.”

Vega Baja desde sus techos de tejamaní y de nubes es una guía ilustrada bilingüe sobre los edificios históricos de Vega Baja construidos, en su mayoría, en el último cuarto del siglo 19 (1875-1899). Para cada edificio se incluye una amplia descripción histórica y arquitectónica utilizando como principal referencia el Inventario Histórico-Arquitectónico de la Zona Histórica de Vega Baja aprobado en el 2004 por el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña y la Junta de Planificación. La guía, además, provee información ilustrada sobre un conjunto de lugares que sirven de espacios abiertos destinados al esparcimiento, a la diversión y el aprendizaje en el sentido de su importancia ecológica. Finalmente, se incluye una reseña de la historia urbana del municipio, con el propósito de contextualizar el proceso en que van surgiendo los ahora llamados edificios históricos. Algunas edificaciones presentadas en la publicación son: la Plaza

Vega Baja es un municipio localizado en el área central de la costa norte de la Isla que, según sus historiadores, se fundó en el 1776. Es conocido como la “Ciudad del Melao Melao” haciendo referencias a su pasado cañero. Vega Baja se distingue, entre otras cosas, por ser un pueblo rico en hallazgos arqueológicos. Aquí se descubrió lo que se designó como el Paso del Indio, el cual exhibe evidencia de la cultura ostionoide. Según los arqueólogos que laboraron en el descubrimiento de enterramientos humanos indígenas en el pueblo, este es un yacimiento de categoría mundial, ya que se dice que, posiblemente se efectuó el estudio más completo sobre los restos humanos prehistóricos en Puerto Rico. Vega Baja from its shingled rooftops and the clouds is a bilingual illustrated guide to the historic buildings of Vega Baja, most of them built in the last quarter of the 19th century (1875-1899). A broad historical and architectural description is provided for each building, using as a main reference the Historical-Architectural Inventory of the Historic Zone of Vega Baja, approved in 2004 by the Institute for Puerto Rican Culture and the Planning Board. The guide also provides illustrated information about a number of sites that serve as open spaces for relaxation, enjoyment and learning, because of their ecological importance. Finally, it includes a review of the municipality’s urban history to contextualize how the now-historical buildings arose. Some of the sites presented in the publication are: the José F. Náter González Plaza, the Phoenix Theater, the Tortuguero Lagoon, the Casa Alonso Museum and the Monument to the Man of the Sugar Cane. (Summary extracted from the guide)

Vega Baja is a municipality located in the north-central part of the island that, according to historians, was founded in 1776. It is known as the “City of Melao Melao,” referring to its past as a sugar cane producer. Among other things, Vega Baja is known for its wealth of archaeological sites. The site that came to be called the Indian Route was discovered here and shows evidence of the Ostionoid culture. According to archaeologists who have worked in the discovery of the indigenous remains buried in Vega Baja, it is a world-class site and is possibly the most complete study of prehistoric human remains in Puerto Rico. El equipo creativo de Producciones Zaranda emprendieron el desarrollo de un documental sobre el séptimo arte partiendo de varias preguntas: ¿hay una industria de cine importante en Puerto Rico?, ¿qué se presenta en ese cine?, ¿qué se le dice al público? y ¿cómo hemos trabajado el cine como medio de producción?

El trabajo encuentra las formas visuales y narrativas de diversos periodos históricos de nuestro país, al tiempo que discute el periodo del cine educativo en Puerto Rico —uno de los más fuertes de nuestro cine— durante el cual los documentales instruían a la gente sobre las precauciones que se deben tomar contra los mosquitos, por ejemplo. Habla, además, de la época posterior, en la que el cine se convirtió en un método de entretenimiento solamente con comedias románticas y cine de crimen, entre cuyas creaciones se encuentran Correa Cotto: ¡Así me llaman! y La leyenda de Toño Bicicleta.

Este documental presenta entrevistas a un grupo experimentado de cineastas, antropólogos e historiadores, tales como: Manuel Valdés Pizzini, Jacobo Morales, Roberto Ramos Perea y Marcos Zurinaga. Este último, por ejemplo, ha dirigido una variedad de filmes, como A Step Away, narrada por Orson Welles, y La gran fiesta, en la cual trabajó con Alejandro Iñárritu. Esta amalgama de entrevistados de diferentes áreas de estudio enriquecen el documental con la diversidad de sus enfoques.

Por otro lado, este documental presenta escenas de películas icónicas que demuestran la situación social de Puerto Rico, aspecto antropológico importante en este proyecto. Vemos la pobreza y aquellos que la sufren, la riqueza y aquellos que la disfrutan y a políticos puertorriqueños y estadounidenses. El documental, que ha sido auspiciado por la FPH, se ha presentado en Nueva York, Nueva Jersey, en varias universidades, en el Teatro Tapia y en el Cine Metro, además de haber sido difundido por televisión.

Con la idea de que el cine refleja la cultura, el proyecto busca entender la historia de Puerto Rico y su industria cinematográfica, respondiendo a tres preguntas: cuándo y para quién se ha hecho cine en Puerto Rico y quién lo ha hecho. Nos recuerda también las vivencias y periodos colectivos, promoviendo el desarrollo de un sentido histórico propio, siempre necesario para entender nuestra cultura y a nosotros mismos.

Puerto Rico Cinema: A Visual Anthropology.

The creative team of Zaranda Productions developed a documentary about the seventh art that started with some questions: Is there an important cinema industry in Puerto Rico? What does this cinema present? What does it say to the public? And, how have we used cinema as a production medium?

The work looks at the visual and narrative forms of various periods in our nation, while discussing the period of educational filmmaking in Puerto Rico — one of the strongest in our cinema — when documentaries instructed the people about precautions they should take against mosquitoes, for example. It also talks about the later period, when cinema became a method of pure entertainment with romantic comedies and crime films, among which are Correa Cotto: ¡Así me llaman! and La

leyenda de Toño Bicicleta. The documentary presents interviews with an experienced group of filmmakers, anthropologists and

historians, such as Manuel Valdés Pizzini, Jacobo Morales, Roberto Ramos Perea and Marcos Zurinaga. The latter, for example, has directed a variety of films, such as A Step Away, narrated by Orson Welles, and La gran fiesta, in which he worked with Alejandro Iñárritu. This amalgam of interviews in various areas of study enriches the documentary with a diversity of perspectives.

At the same time, the documentary presents scenes from iconic films that show Puerto Rico’s social situation, an important anthropological aspect of the production. We see the poverty and those who suffer it, the wealth and those who enjoy it, and the Puerto Rican and U.S. politicians. The documentary, sponsored by the Puerto Rican Endowment for the Humanities, has been shown in New York, New Jersey, at various universities, at the Tapia Theater and at the Metro Cinema, as well as having been broadcast on television.

With the idea that cinema reflects the culture, the project seeks to understand the story of Puerto Rico and its cinematic industry, answering three questions: when and for whom has cinema in Puerto Rico been made, and who has made it. It also reminds us of our shared experiences and times, promoting the development of our own historic sense, which is always necessary for understanding our culture and ourselves.

New headquarters. After more than 25 years with our headquarters in the “Corralón de San José” or “Casa de los dos zaguanes” building, the Endowment moved in August of 2017. You can now visit us on the third level of the Ballajá Barracks building at Old San Juan.

Noticias/News El tesoro lexicográfico del español de Puerto Rico en Línea fue uno de los proyectos escogidos para presentarse en la conferencia anual del National Endowment for the Humanities el pasado mes de noviembre. La Dra. Maia Sherwood presentó el mismo ante un amplio grupo de participantes de los diversos concilios de Estados Unidos. El proyecto a grandes rasgos, tiene como propósito el poner a la disposición del público general, a través del Internet, el invaluable contenido del diccionario Tesoro lexicográfico del español de Puerto Rico, una obra de la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española realizada por las doctoras María Vaquero y Amparo Morales.

The Online Lexicographical Treasury of the Spanish of Puerto Rico was one of the projects chosen to be presented at the annual conference of the National Endowment for the Humanities last November. Dr. Maia Sherwood made the presentation to a large group of attendees from various councils of the United States. The purpose of the project, in broad terms, is to make available to the general public, via the Internet, the invaluable contents of the Lexicographical Treasury of the Spanish of Puerto Rico dictionary, a work by the Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language and created by Dr. María Vaquero and Dr. Amparo Morales.

Colaboración con la USC. El pasado mes de agosto la Fundación firmó un acuerdo de colaboración con la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (USC) con el fin de que los estudiantes apoyen los esfuerzos de la Fundación mientras adquieren experiencia profesional, social y comunitaria. El acuerdo permite a los estudiantes de la Escuela de Comunicación Ferré Rangel a elaborar contenido para las redes sociales y desarrollar campañas de relaciones públicas para la Fundación. Además, a través de los Centro de Vinculación Comunitaria y Desarrollo del Voluntariado podrán crear una base de datos para identificar productos culturales y establecer un robusto programa de voluntariado.

Collaboration with Sagrado Corazón. In August, the Endowment signed an agreement with the Sagrado Corazón University so students can support the Endowment’s work while gaining pro-fessional, social and community experience. The agreement allows students from the Ferré Rangel School of Commu-nications to create content for the Endowments social media and to develop public relations campaigns. Additionally, through the Community Ties and Volunteerism Development Center, they will create a database to identify cultural products and to establish a robust volunteer program.

Ganamos un Emmy. El pasado mes de diciembre el Programa de televisión de la Fundación ,“Tertulia en la ciudad” Fachada del borde amurallado de San Juan, ganó un Emmy. El programa que se basó en el libro del Arquitecto Jorge Rigau, auspiciado por la Fundación, sobre las murallas de San Juan fue uno de cinco programas de la serie. La serie completa fue producida por Michelle Miró y contó con la participación de Mariana Irene Monclova como presentadora. Para el 2018 se espera se transmita la segunda temporada a través de Sistema TV/Canal 40.

We won an Emmy. In December, the Endowment television program, “Tertulia in the City” about the Fachada del borde amurallado de San Juan, won an Emmy award. The program about the walls of San Juan, based on the book by architect Jorge Rigau that was sponsored by the Endowment, was one of 5 programs in the series. The complete series was produced by Michelle Miró with Mariana Irene Monclova participating as host. The second season is expected to be broadcast on Sistema TV/Channel 40 in 2018.


Fph endosa nuevo curso. La Universidad del Este creó un nuevo curso sobre la Historia de los gobernadores estadounidenses en Puerto Rico. El mismo cuenta con el endoso de la Fundación por su pertinencia y valor histórico-social. El curso contará con historiadores como el Dr. Luis E. González Vales, Dr. Jorge Rodríguez Beruff, Dr. Aarón Gamaliel Ramos y la Dra. Hilda Blanch. La FPH hizo entrega, por medio del Prof. Ognasio Olazagasti, de dos Colecciones de los ocho libros e informes publicados originalmente entre el 1899 y el 1926, subvencionados por el programa We the People del National Endowment for the Humanities. Esta colección representa una porción de la historiografía puertorriqueña publicada en inglés.

Endowment endorses new course. The University of the East created a new course on the History of the U.S. Governors in Puerto Rico. It has been endorsed by the Endowment for its relevance and historical-social value. The course includes participation by historians such as Dr. Luis E. González Vales, Dr. Jorge Rodríguez Beruff, Dr. Aarón Gamaliel Ramos, Dr. Jaime Partsch McMillan, Dr. Hilda Blanch, Dr. Manuel Almeida, Dr. Josué Caamaño Dones, Dr. Evelyn Vélez Rodríguez and Dr. Marcial Ocasio. The Endowment delivered, through Prof. Ignasio Olazagasti, two Collections of the eight books originally published between 1899 and 1926, created with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ We the People program. The collection represents a portion of Puerto Rican historiography published in English.

Entrega de material educativo. Como parte de nuestro objetivo de difundir y preservar las humanidades, la Fundación continúa con su esfuerzo de colaborar con las universidades del país. En esta ocasión se hizo entrega, a estudiantes de la maestría de Arqueología de Puerto Rico y el Caribe del Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe, de un valioso material humanístico, producto de los proyectos auspiciados por la FPH. El grupo académico especializado estuvo compuestos por 60 miembros, incluyendo estudiantes y facultad.

Delivery of educational material. As part of our objective to preserve and disseminate the humanities, the Endowment continues its efforts to work with the island’s universities. Masters level students in the Archaeology of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean at the Center for Advanced Studies in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean were presented valuable humanities materials that were the result of projects sponsored by the En-dowment. This specialized academic group consisted of 60 members, including students and faculty.
