A pesar de que existen ya pocos lugares en la Tierra que nohayan sido explorados, la Era de los Descubrimientos continúa.Por medio de una mente abierta e imaginación activa se puedenobservar fenómenos naturales y artificiales de nuestro tiempo,teniendo así nuevas vivencias sin contar con la ayuda de laindustria cinematográfica, la acción virtual de los videojuegosni la obligación de viajar a ambientes extremos como los dospolos o al espacio interplanetario.

Expediciones Comisariadas es un proyecto a largo plazo, quepretende observar, experimentar y explorar diversos fenómenoscontemporáneos a través de la investigación artística. Lo haceen la zona fronteriza del arte y la ciencia convocando artistas,científicos y otros agentes culturales a trabajar conjuntamente,produciendo nuevas obras de arte y estimulando al público aparticipar y reflexionar en los procesos creativos.

La 1ª Expedición al Zoo de Novosibirsk, Siberia,1 de agosto, 2008

Si bien los eclipses solares y lunares ocurren enuna fecha y un lugar geográfico que pueden serprevistos por los astrónomos con miles de añosde antelación, poco se puede hacer para retrasaro resituar el acontecimiento. El año 2008, el día1 de agosto a las 10.45 (UT) el eclipse solar totaloscurece una franja amplia que comienza enCanada, y sigue hasta China pasando por Rúsiay Mongolia.

El destino de la primera Expedición Comisariadaserá el Zoo de Novosibirsk, la capital de Siberia.El eclipse y su efecto en los animales y el públicodel Zoo serán investigados por tres artistasinvitados en el proyecto.

El espectáculo celeste será investigado utilizandouna combinación de métodos empíricos; AngesMeyer-Brandis (Alemania) con el enfoque astro-zoológico y fantástico, Mireia C. Saladriques(España-Cataluña) ofreciendo una dimensiónsocial-colectiva y Tommi Taipale (Finlandia)proporcionando la visión gráfica del viajero fortuito.El papel de este último será además, el de lospintores o fotógrafos de las expediciones históricas– ofrecer documentación visual de calidad delviaje para las generaciones futuras.

El viaje a Siberia se ha decidido hacer en trendesde Finlandia, donde inicia el itinerario llamado“Trans-Siberiano” por las vías ferroviarias rusas.El trayecto desde Helsinki hasta Novosibirsk durará2 días, 13 horas y 6 mínutos, mientras que laduración del fenómeno investigado se limitaen 2 minutos 20 segundos en su totalidad.(fuente: NASA)

Según las palabras del etólogo y primatólogocatalán, Dr. Jordi Sabater Pí, el cambio deparadigma de la relación del hombre con suentorno natural es un proceso que pasa porconocer, representar, amar y finalmente – proteger.

El objetivo de las Expediciones Comisariadasde Capsula es usar las herramientas de la creaciónartística para elevar el grado de la conscienciade un público amplio sobre su entorno, sea naturalo artificial – crear sensaciones, que se podriadenominar “topofilia global”.

En caso que la observación del suceso impliquedesplazamientos, se pone una atención especialen la selección del medio de transporte y la actitudhacia el propio viaje. Se aspira a usar manerasrespetuosas con el medio ambiente y a sentir ladistancia no sólo en kilómetros, sino en contrastesculturales y geográficos. Para recorrer distancias,tanto caminar, nadar, patinar, remar, como viajaren trineo, submarino, globo de aire caliente, auto-stop o en tren es perfectamente válido en la épocade los trenes de alta velocidad y vuelos de bajocoste en la que vivimos. Son modos dedesplazamiento que personifican la Filosofía deViaje de las Expediciones Comisariadas deCapsula.

La investigación bio-poética “Moon GooseExperiment” de Agnes Meyer-Brandis estábasada en un texto del obispo inglés FrancisGodwin (1562-1633), el autor del librollamado “The Man in The Moone”. Segúnel texto de Godwin el Ganso Lunar tiene elhábito de migrar a la Luna y a partir de éstahipótesis la artista está interesada eninvestigar el comportamiento de los gansosdurante el eclipse.

En su proyecto “Zoolar Eclipse”Mireia Saladrigues invitará a cienvisitantes del Zoo a desarrollar unestudio etológico. Recibirán un“Zoolar Kit” que contendrá unasgafas para observar el eclipse yunas postales para dar informaciónprecisa sobre el comportamientohabitual de los animales elegidos y paraanotar observaciones sobre loscambios en estos animales durante eleclipse total. Las postales, que seránrecogidas a la salida del recinto,se traducirán para ser mostradas enfuturas exposiciónes.

El rol del fotógrafo Tommi Taipale durante laexpedición es doble. Por un lado, su proyectoartístico se concentra en el viaje en sí y, por otro,del mismo modo que en las expedicioneshistóricas, será el encargado de documentargráficamente el proyecto una vez en Novosibirsk.La expedición será la continuación de su primerviaje para observar un eclipse, realizado en agostodel 1999 desde Finlandia hasta Hungría, al pueblode Rabapatona en las orillas del Río Danubio. Parallegar a este destino viajó durante una semana enauto-stop. Este verano se desplazará a Novosibirskviajando unos cinco mil kilometros de la mismamanera. Su trabajo, llamado a “El viaje al Eclipse”ofrecerá al público una perspectiva original de lasdimensiones geográficas y de los ciudadanos deRusia, de la ciudad de Novosibirsk y del Zoo.

La dirección del Zoo, Dr. Rostislaw Shilo y la directoracientífica Olga Shilo han dado el permiso a los artistaspara trabajar en las instalaciones del Zoo y ofrecencolaborar en el trabajo previo. Se trata el Zoo másantiguo de Rusia, fundado el año 1947. Es un Zoocientífico, donde viven 634 especies y 10 928 animalesen 53 hectareas de un territorio boscoso de pinos yabedules. En verano el Parque Zoológico cuenta conalderedor de mil visitas díarias.

La primera expedición de Capsula a Novosibirsk sedefine como el proyecto piloto de una serie deExpediciones futuras. Dá la casualidad de que elsiguiente eclipse solar total sucederá el día 22 deJulio del año 2009, en una zona situada entre la Indiay China. Se plantea aprovechar la cercanía de estosdos eventos celestiales para seguir el proyecto el añoque viene. El enfoque de la siguiente investigaciónserá otro, diferente al del ambito zoológico, y se definiráa través de las propuestas de artistas y otros agentesculturales a quienes se invita a través de unaconvocatoria abierta de propuestas.A partir de los proyectos nacidos en las Expediciones,se hará exposiciones, conferencias y publicaciones,en las cuáles los expedicionarios narrarán susexperiencias ilustradas por los trabajos realizados.A Minima publicará sobre la Expedición al eclipsetotal solar en el otoño 2008.

There are hardly any unexplored areas of the Earth,but the Time of Discovery is not over yet. Instead oflosing sleep trying to find undiscovered places orstruggling to survive remote and inhospitableenvironments such as the Polar Regions or OuterSpace, we can use our energies to observe intriguingphenomena and endeavour to experience newsensations elsewhere, far beyond the ideas of thecommercial film or video game industry.

“Curated Expeditions” is dedicated to observing andexperiencing fascinating earthly phenomena throughartistic investigation. In parallel, Capsula wants torevive leisurely traveling experiences, which have beencast aside by the frantic pace of modern day life.Walking, bob-sleighing, swimming, hitchhiking, rowing,sailing, trains and submarines all personify the CapsulaPhilosophy of Voyage.

The 1st Expedition of Capsula will take three artiststo observe a total solar eclipse. In 2008, this will occuron August 1st over a vast area stretching from Canada,through to Russia, Mongolia and China. The observationlocation selected is the scientific Zoo in Novosibirsk,the capital of Siberia. Eclipse begins in Novosibirskat 15.45 pm.

The Director of the Zoo, Dr.Rostislaw Shilo and theZoo staff will collaborate during the preliminarypreparation phase of the project. Founded in 1947,the Zoo is the oldest in Russia, spread over 53hectares, and offers a home to 634 species and 10928 specimens. The Zoo specializes in breedingendangered species.

The artists; German Agnes Meyer-Brandis, CatalanMireia Saladrigues and Finnish Tommi Taipale will studythis celestial phenomena and its impact on the animalsand the visitors of the Zoo. Each of them have designedtheir own personal case study in collaboration withthe Zoo personnel and other professionals of zoology,etology, astronomy, etc.

The travel from Finland to Novosibirsk will combinetrains and other leisurely means of transport. Theexpedition group will stay at the Zoo for eight days,from July 25th through to August 3rd. The one-waytrain journey takes approximately 2 days, 13 hours and6 minutes and the eclipse will last a total of two minutesand twenty seconds (source: NASA).

Three proposals

Agnes Meyer-Brandis is the founder of the "Instituteof Research Raft for Subterranean Reefology". Herwork is exhibited worldwide and is at the experimentaledge of art and science, exploring the zone betweenfact and fiction, fantasy and technology. Her currentfocus is on "fantastic" augmented reality and otherparticipatory urban interventions, using self-designedand self-made tools. Consequently, she is able toinvestigate sub and upper worlds with the accuracyof a scientist. Since 2005 she has participated invarious expeditions to Brazil, Norway and Germany.During these journeys she has investigatedweightlessness in collaboration with German AirspaceCenter (DLR) and analysed subterranean icebergs incollaboration with NASA/JPL.

The bio-poetic investigation by Agnes is based on atext by Francis Godwin (1562-1633), author of thebook “The Man in the Moone” and will focus on thebehaviour of Moon Geese during the eclipse.Agnes will prepare a setup where she sits on a chair,surrounded by 10-12 geese, ready to take off to theMoon. Her Moon Goose Experiment, it´s audiovisualdocumentation and the results of meteorologicalmeasurements gathered during the eclipse, will beexhibited in a future exhibition.

Remarkable expeditions of 19th and 20th centurieswere documented by photographers or illustrators thataccompanied the expeditions and because of theirwork, both the cultural and the scientific discoverieswere graphically immortalized. Tommi Taipale is aphotographer, specialising in portraying Russia duringhis long, slowly advancing journeys to the peripheryof this huge country. This expedition is a continuationof his trip begun in 1999 when he first observed thetotal eclipse in the village of Rabapatona in Hungary,on the banks of the River Danube. He hitchhiked for

one week to reach his destination. This summer heplans to reach Novosibirsk starting his trip from Helsinkiby bicycle to Petroskoi and the by hitchhiking to Siberia.Through his Journey to the Eclipse, photographs anddiary notes, he will offer an original perspective of thedimensions and citizens of Russia, Novosibirskand Zoo.

Mireia Saladrigues aims to understand and find newdimensions of the surrounding world throughparticipative actions and research projects. Her ZoolarEclipse -project will invite one hundred Zoo visitors toactively participate in observing the changes to theanimals and themselves during the total eclipse.

She has chosen seven species of animals and thebehaviour of these "test animals" will be registeredand written down by the zoo visitors on the postcards,designed by Mireia. A blanket, eclipse glasses andwritten information, will form a Zoolar Kit, exhibitedlater with the documented experiences of the publicand Mireia herself.

Ulla Taipale has worked for the Capsula platform since2005, curating and organising events at the crossroadsof art, science and nature. Her fascination with artisticexpression intercommunicating with sciences,especially with natural sciences, is the main thread ofher new project "Curated Expeditions". Through thislong term project she aims to produce new pieces ofartwork and events while paying close attention tointernational contemporary phenomena. The projectaims to continue next year in India and China, wherein July 2009 , another total solar eclipse will occur.A full reportage of the Expedition to Siberia will bepublished in A Minima during the autumn 2008.

Agnes Meyer-Brandis(Aachen, Germany, 1973) is the founder ofthe ìForschungsfloss FFUR / Research Raftfor Subterranean Reefologyì, a small institutewhose chief aim is to explore and confirmsubterranean phenomena and unknownlifeforms. She comes from a background ofboth sculpture and new media art. Her work,exhibited worldwide, is at the experimentaledge of art and science, exploring the zonebetween fact and fiction, fantasy andtechnology. Tommi Taipale(Valkeakoski, Finland, 1977) is Finnishphotographer and artist who graduated in2007 in Lahti Insitutue of Art and Design inFinland. As photodocumentarist he has specialinterest in slow intuitive travelling in areaswhere the distinction between nature andculture is not obvious. Taipale has madeextensive trips to Russia, which he callsexperimental adventures. Taipale`sphotographs has been exhibitited in solo- andjoint exhibitions in Germany, Finland, Poland,Lithuania and Estonia.

Mireia Saldrigues(Terrassa, Spain 1978) is a Catalonian artistwith a Fine Arts MA in University of Barcelonaand a PEI in MACBA. Saladrigues has workedin Spain, England, Finland and Denmark. Shefocuses in hermeneutically understanding thecontext where she lives and works, mainly onquestioning clichés. Her projects are close toresearch practices where she involvesaudience participation through conversation,interviews and a variety of other inspiring andcreative practices. Saladrigues has exhibitedin numerous solo and group shows in Spain,Finland, Denmark and United States and shehas been lecturing and giving conferences inuniversities and art schools.

Ulla Taipale / CAPSULA(Tampere, Finland, 1971) is an independentcurator, photographer and cultural producer.Lives in Barcelona and in Finland. Taipale holdsB.Sc. in environmental engineering andcommunications and a postgraduate degreein Curating and Cultural Practices in Art andNew Media.
