MIT CAMPUS

chapel site

Eero Saarinen designed an iconic chapel on the MIT campus in the 1950s. The aim of this project was to reconceive this chapel with contemporary design and construction techniques. The same site, scale, and layout of the original chapel was used. However, the detailing and material selection was left at the discretion of the desinger. The parametric chapel seeks to reinnovate the original design intent of Saarinen but for the 21st century. The parametric design software Grasshopper was used to create the roof for the chapel which would be custom made out of steel, held up by steel columns and suspend the fritted glass that encloses the chapel space.

site plan

The San Antonio Design Center was a sophomore student design competition for a conceptual mid-rise building to occupy an empty lot next to Main Plaza. The building has an atrium cut all the way through the first floor angled towards the north to receive the most ambient and inspirational light. The building is a mixed-use program that would potentially house design studios, firms, offices, an auditorium, as well as retail space and various art galleries on the pedestrian level. The terrace on the third floor can be directly accessed from the street level entry and would be open to the public as an extension of the outdoor expeirence of Main Plaza.

ADAPT +REUSEProfessor: Dr. Sedef Doganerfall 2014the Hot Wells ruin located in the far south side of San Antonio has remained vacant and unutilized for too long. This project is an aim to bring the historic bath house back to life with a light steel frame construction. The baths will remain where they historically were and new contemporary amenities have been added.

Tensegrity is the integration of a structural language that works as a skeleton of continuous tension members and discontinuous compression members that operate with maximum efficiency andeconomy and at the same time creating a dynamic sense of space

a single tensegrity structural module was designed then repeated 4 times in one direction and 2 times in the other, then connected in the center with descending stairs to create an exciting structurally dominated structure.

This second year structures project called for the design of a semi open outdoor exhibition space with a large span. The type of structure was left open as well as the site, and type of exhibit. The team worked together creating a digital model as well as a physical model of the entire structure. To achive the large span requirements we selected tensegrity (tensional integrity) as the basis for the design.

in order to create a semi open outdoor pavilon based on tensegrity, a single compression-tension module was developed then repeated. This required creating many different models until a satisfying, economical solution was found. The connection detail for the members was also developed and digitially modeled.

Doimaine de Boisbuchet is a campus located in the beautiful countryside region of Lessac, France. The campus currently consists of a 19th century chateau and an “architectural park” which has three small buildings available to use for conferences, meetings, presentations, theatre or performances. The setting is a 19th century park with a nearby river and small lake. The campus is a destination for workshops and discussions by designers from all over the world. The Vitra Campus in Germany is a similar example of what this campus is trying to accomplish. In order to do so there is one missing building that the Boisbuchet estate would surely benefit from and that is a museum to showcase the various designed objects, as well as art and installations. The Boisbuchet Museum was designed keeping in mind the size and scale and program of Frank Gehry’s Vitra Museum. The site is within the circled patch of land near the boisbuchet estate, the museum is to be connected to its surroundings by various paths as well as allow for lines of sight and a service truck entry. The design of the museum is split into a continuos exterior circulation volume that allows visitors to travel to the top of the in one connected path and enjoy the various views and terraces that can double up as outdoor workshop spaces if necessary.

graphicsthe following series of 20”x30” posters were created as part of a graphic design course (advanced design visualization) taken during the fall 2014 semester at UTSA under the instruction of Mark Blizard.

Page 51: Andres M. Nunez Portfolio

one of the requirements for this poster was for it to have a brochure that could be cut out, folded and taken as a guide for visitors to the city of san antonio. The white dotted line along the bottom of the poster represents where it would be cut.
