EditorialLos días de sol, playa y diver-

sión se acercan para dejar atrás las clases y las responsabi-lidades. Los campamentos de verano se presentan como una alternativa importante para los pa-

dres al darles a los hijos la oportunidad de pasar unos meses de esparcimiento, muchas veces acompañado de programas educativos que refuerzan las deficien-cias que pudieron tener en el año escolar. En nuestro esfuerzo de informar y servir a nuestra comunidad, en esta edición podrán encontrar una variedad de ofertas de campamentos de verano desde los 3 a los 17 años. Campamentos como los que ofrece Amberwood, Lingua y Sagemont son divertidos, seguros y edu-cativos. No hay duda que sus hijos tendrán tiempos inolvidables, nuevos amigos, nuevas experiencias que quedaran en su memoria como recuerdos que for-maran parte de su crecimiento personal.

The days of sun, sand and fun are fast approaching leaving behind classes and responsibilities. Sum-

mer camps are an important alternative for parents to give children the opportunity to spend a few months of relaxation, often accompanied by educational pro-grams that reinforce the deficiencies that students may have had during the school year. In our effort to inform and serve our community, in this issue you will find a variety of summer camps opportunities for children of ages 3 to 17. Amberwood, Lingua and Sagemont are all fun, safe and educational sum-mer camps. Without a doubt your children will have an unforgetable time, making new friends, and crea ting lasting experiences that will shape their personal growth.

¿Por qué iniciar la preparación universitaria en la escuela primaria?Por: Mellesia Nelson

La expectativa de la mayoría de los padres es que sus hijos algún día asistan a la universidad, lo que también es el objetivo de la mayoría de los niños. Estas expectativas que los padres establecen para sus hijos a temprana edad, tienen un

impacto profundo en lo que sus hijos esperan de sí mismos. Su hijo no puede compartir ésto con ustedes, pero lo hace. Debido a la gran influencia que tienen sobre las ilusiones de su hijo para el futuro, prepararlo para la universidad a una edad temprana es impera-tivo. Sin embargo, ello no significa que los padres deben llevar a casa la necesidad de tomar el SAT o ACT o entregar una lista de universidades. Más bien, hacer una planifi-cación, sobre todo al inicio de la escuela media que le permitirá a su hijo construir bases sólidas para el éxito a largo plazo.

Cuando los estudiantes enfrentan desafíos en la escuela media, son más propensos a seguir los mismos hábitos en la escuela secundaria, porque la base ya está en marcha. Disfrutar y descubrir lo que la escuela media ofrece es clave. No es que Ud. deba llamar al departamento de admisiones de Harvard. En su lugar, continúe motivándolo a experimentar cosas nuevas y a enfocarse en las clases que le permitan descubrir aquello que le emociona.

Ayúdelo a participar en actividades fuera del salón de clase, a desarrollar buenos hábitos y romper aquellos no tan adecuados que pudo haber adquirido. Hable con su hijo acerca de sus intereses. Uno nunca sabe, un día, ésto podría llevarlo a una carrera universitaria.

The expectation of most parents is that their child will one day attend college; this too is the goal most children have for themselves. The expectations that par-ents set for their children at a young age have a profound impact on what their

children expect for themselves. Your child may not share this with you, but it does.

Due to the strong influence you have on your child’s expectations for the future, preparing your child for college at an early age is imperative. This in no way means that as parents you must drive home the need for taking the SAT or ACT or having a college list. Rather, early planning especially in middle school means building a solid foundation for long term success.

When students challenge themselves in middle school they are more likely to continue the same habits in high school because the foundation is already in place. Enjoying and exploring what middle school has to offer is key. You should not be calling the admis-sions office at Harvard. In-stead, continue to encourage your child to try new things and focus in the classroom to discover those things that excite him. Help him to become involved out-side of the classroom and develop good habits while breaking any bad habits that may have been deve loped. Talk to your child about his interests. You never know, this might once day translate into a college major.

Hace 10 ó 15 años se pensaba en las biblio-tecas como un lugar donde solo se podían tomar libros prestados y se debía mantener silencio todo el tiempo.Hoy en día las bibliotecas han expandido su alcance a la comunidad uniendo los ser-vicios tradicionales con los avances tec-nológicos.En la Biblioteca de Weston, la cual es parte de la división del Sistemas de Bibliotecas Públicas del Condado Broward , ofrecemos una variedad de servicios para nuestra dinámica y exigente clientela de la ciudad.Nuestra biblioteca tiene acceso a una infi nidad de servicios y entretenimiento como libros en inglés, español y portugués. Tam-bién tenemos libros en formato electrónico y una gran colección de películas en DVD.Grupos de conversación para practicar el inglés y clases para el examen de la ciu-dadanía estadounidense son otros de los servicios más solicitados. Entre los eventos especiales que tendremos durante los próximos meses será la pre-sentación de la autora colombiana Tatiana Barrera No milk please, Este evento se llevará a cabo el lunes 1ro de Abril a las 6:30 p.m. El sábado 4 de mayo desde las 3:00 hasta las 4:00 p.m. tendremos un homenaje para las madres con un concierto del reconocido grupo musical Amazonia Vocal Ensemble.

10 or 15 years ago we thought of libraries as a place where one could only borrow books and read in complete silence.Today, libraries have expanded their com-munity outreach, merging traditional ser-vices with technological advances.In the Weston Library, a division of the Broward County Public Library system offers a variety of services to our dynamic and demanding clientele from the city of Weston.Our library has access to a myriad of ser-vices and entertainment including books in English, Spanish and Portuguese. We also have e-books and a large collection of mov-ies on DVD.Out most requested services include con-versation groups to practice English and classes for the U.S. citizenship exam. One of our special events in the coming months will be the presentation of Co-lombian author Tatiana Barrera “No Milk Please”. This event will take place on Mon-day, April 1st at 6:30 p.m.

El valor de la música en la socie-dad, es que cada cultura humana utiliza la música como lenguaje universal de expresión y emo-

ción. Las artes proporcionan oportunidades de aprendizaje efectivo que producen un mayor rendimiento académico,pensamiento crítico y habilidades para resolver pro blemas. La participación en la música pu-ede ser un puente para la construcción de la aceptación y la tolerancia hacia las perso-nas de diferentes edades y culturas.

The value of music to so-ciety is that every human culture uses music as a universal language of

expression and emotion. The arts provide effective learning oppor-tunities which yield increased aca-demic performance, critical think-ing and problem solving skills.

Unlike other children’s activities, music education is an investment which contrib-utes to student achievement. The study of music helps in developing intelligence by contributing to brain development and increased IQ test scores. Children with music training have significantly better verbal memory. Mastering a musical in-strument also improves the brains ability to process languages. Music experience can also help to fine-tune the brain’s au-ditory system. With these facts in mind, Camp Lingua came to life over a decade ago. At Camp Lingua, the child’s senses are actively engaged through fun visual, auditory and physical activities geared to-wards making him/her bilingual. We fol-

low the “see-listen-and-learn” technique, which engages the child’s ability to learn a second language. The child is practically surrounded with the new language so that he or she learns easily by seeing, hearing and putting a language in action. A com-bination of a state of the art methodology and materials -including story videos, vo-cabulary DVDs, CDs, scripts and guides to literally surround the child with new lan-guage ensures a natural language learning experience. As part of the program, cultural aspects of the countries where the language of study is spoken are included.

Campamento Sagemont tuvo su primera temporada en 1997, hace 17 años, y Joann Laskin ha participado en el campa-mento de Sagemont desde el primer año..

Encontramos que nuestros campistas tienen intereses tan diversos, que queríamos crear una variedad de opciones para que pudieran crecer y expandirse. Es algo que se ofrece a todos, desde el preescolar hasta 8 º grado. Además, nuestros programas de campa-mentos están orientados hacia la partici-pación activa mientras ¡se divierten!

Cada verano se ofrece más de una docena de opciones en distintas especialidades que incluyen campamento tradicional, campa-mento de aventura, viajes a Camp, cam-pamento de deportes, campamento de arte, campo de ciencia, la escuela de verano y mucho más.

Este verano estaremos ofreciendo, además, campamento zoológico, campo de voz per-formance, marina y campo de alegría. Los campistas en cada campamento se benefi-ciarán de un enfoque práctico a través de la exposición de los viajes de estudio, presen-tadores y actuaciones.

Tenemos muchas sesiones: tormenta de ideas, escuchar los comentarios de la fa-milia y nos fijamos en las tendencias del momento.

Algunos de los programas se basan es-pecíficamente en torno a las excursiones

y campamentos de exploración y otros tienen salidas fuera de las instalaciones del camp, una vez por semana a lugares que estén relacionados con las actividades de los programas. Nuestros campistas visi-tan lugares como el Museo Morakami, las piscinas venecianas, paseos en botes in-flables, parques acuáticos, Museo de Arte de Fort Lauderdale, Biscayne Nature Cen-ter y juegos de los Marlins.

Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestro pro-grama académico “Escuela de Verano”, porque son difíciles de encontrar en el con-dado de Broward. Atendemos aquellos es-tudiantes que quieren enriquecer, remediar o ayudar a cerrar la brecha de aprendizaje que puede ocurrir en los estudiantes duran-te el verano. Algunos estudiantes asisten a la escuela de verano, al mismo tiempo, que otros optan por participar en una escuela de verano y la combinación de campamento por día.

Nuestros campistas han llegado a conocer y amar sus veranos con nosotros. Siempre estamos cambiando las cosas y añadiendo nuevas experiencias. Estamos muy en-tusiasmados con la introducción de más programas nuevos orientados a atraer a estudiantes de la escuela media. Queremos que los campistas y sus padres sepan que nuestras actividades diarias, aventuras y viajes ofrecen una gran oportunidad para construir amistades y explorar las atraccio-nes del sur de Florida en un ambiente sen-cillo, seguro y asequible.

Camp Sagemont had its first sea-son in 1997, 17 years ago and Joann Laskin has been involved with camp Sagemont since the 1st.year.We found that our campers have so many diverse interests that we wanted to create a variety of options for them to grow and expand into. There is something offered for everyone from preschool through 8th grade. In addition, our camp programs are geared towards active involvement while having fun! Each summer we offer over a dozen spe-cialty camp choices that include traditional day camp, adventure camp, travel camp, sports camp, art camp, science camp, sum-mer school and more.This summer we will be offering zoo camp, voice/performance camp, marine camp and cheer camp. The campers in each camp will benefit from a hands-on approach through the exposure of field trips, present-ers and performances. We have many brainstorming sessions, we listen to family survey comments and we look at popular trends.Some of the programs are based specifi-cally around field trips and exploration and other camps have field trips once a week to locations that tie into the programs’ ac-

tivities. Our campers visit places like the Morakami Museum, The Venetian Pools, Airboat Rides, Water Parks, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Biscayne Nature Cen-ter & Marlin’s games.We are very proud of our academic Sum-mer School program because these are hard to find in Broward County. We cater to students who want to get enrichment or remediation to help bridge the learning gap that can occur for students over the sum-mer. Some students attend just summer school and others choose to participate in a summer school and day camp combination. Due to expressed interest from parents, we are offering a limited bus service this sum-mer for the first time serving the areas of Miramar to Plantation. Our campers have come to know and love their summers with us. We are always changing things up and adding new experi-ences. We are very excited about introduc-ing more new programs geared to appeal to middle schoolers. We want the camp-ers and their parents to know that our daily activities, adventures and travels provide a great opportunity for building friendships plus exploring South Florida’s attractions in an easy, safe and affordable environ-ment.

El pasado 23 de febrero, en Signature Grand; el Departamento ESOL de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Broward, ofreció su exitosa conferencia anual para padres bilingües. Más de 300 personas asistieron al evento, el cual estuvo enfo-

cado a “Desbloquear tu Futuro” y a conseguir las claves para tener éxito en la escuela secundaria, llevando más estudiantes a la universidad.

Este año, el Departamento de ESOL se asoció con dos organizaciones: NewFuturo y uAspire ofreciendo excelente información (en inglés, español, creole y portugués) que le permita a los padres familiarizarse con el sistema, ayudando a aumentar las tasas de graduación y de estudiantes inscritos en cole-gios y Universidades.

El Superintendente Runcie y miembros de la Junta, Laurie Rich Levinson y Patti Good, ofrecieron sus palabras inspiradoras e in-vitaron a los padres a ser partícipes en la educación de sus hijos.

Está atento a nuestras próximas actividades a través de Aldea Ed-ucativa, quien es nuestro socio para correr la voz entre los padres.

On 23 February, Signature Grand, the ESOL Department Public Schools Broward County, offered a successful annual conference for bilingual parents. More than 300 people attended the event, which was focused on “Unlock Your Future” and

get the keys to success in high school, bringing more students to college.

This year, the ESOL Department partnered with two organizations, and U.S. NewFuturo and uAspire offering excellent information (in English, Spanish, Creole and Portuguese) that allows parents to become familiar with the system, helping to increase graduation rates and students enrolled in colleges and universities.

Superintendent Runcie and Board members, Laurie Rich Levinson and Patti Good, of-fered inspiring words and invited their parents to be partners in the education of their children.

Is responsive to our upcoming activities through Aldea Educativa, who is our partner in spreading the word among parents.

De acuerdo a la definición del Dr. P.M. Forni, co-fundador del Civility Project de la Universidad John Hopkins, cuando hablamos de “cortesía”

estamos hablando de cómo tratamos a las personas a nuestro alrededor y eso tiene mucho que ver con la ética y los valores. Un considerable cuerpo de investigación indica que las personas que tienen destrezas sociales y re-lacionales, bien desarrolladas, tienen la capacidad de ger-enciar sus relaciones interpersonales de manera positiva y eso es fundamental para nuestro bienestar y buena salud.

Las personas que tienen buenos modales son más exitosas personal y profesionalmente, simplemente, porque se llevan bien con los demás y eso ofrece la oportunidad para que las personas quieran estar cerca de ellas, ser parte de su entorno.

Cuando somos niños y nuestros padres nos inculcan que tengamos buenos modales, ten-demos a pensar que eso es algo que hacemos para beneficio de los demás. Como adultos, debemos tomar conciencia que la práctica de la cortesía y urbanidad es una manera muy expedita de beneficiarnos a nosotros mismos, primero que todo, porque entendemos que las necesidades de los demás son tan importantes como las nuestras, pero desde un punto de vista mucho más egoísta, es que disfrutaremos de los beneficios de ser del agrado de otras personas, de evitar conflictos y de establecer una red de buenas relaciones que nos brindan apoyo y eso está todo directamente relacionado con una mejor calidad de vida. ¡Decidamos practicar la cortesía!

When we speak of civility, according to Dr. P.M Forni, co-founder of the John Hopkins University Civility Project, we are speaking about how we treat others in our daily life and that is closely related to our ethics and

values. A large body of studies indicate that people that have social skills and highly developed relational skills have the ability to manage their relationships in a favorable manner which are crucial to our well-being and good health. People that have good manners and more successful both personally and professio nally simply because they get along well with others and that opens up the opportunity for people to want to be near you, be part of your circle. When we are children and our parents want us to practice good manners, we tend to view that behavior as something we do for others. As adults, we should become aware that practicing civility is a very expedient way to benefit ourselves, because first of all, we understand that other’s needs are as important as ours, but from a selfish stand point, we can enjoy the benefits of having other people like us, of avoiding conflicts and of establishing good and supportive relationships and that is directly related to a better quality of life. So let’s choose civility!
