    San Zhen Protocols: Part I

    By Craig Williams, LAc, AHG

The system of San Zhen therapy or "three-needletechnique" is a highly effective system of

acupuncture, which I use extensively in my privatepractice. In this two- part article, I will discuss

various three-needle cominations for variouspatterns of disharmony and present some case

studies which reflect the effective clinical results ofthis elegantly simple approach.

It appears the modern trend within the acupuncturecommunity is the endless search for "magical"

points, which require no diagnostic evaluation alongwith the mixing of traditional !hinese medicine withersat "new age" eliefs such as cha#ras and$or theever neulous idea of "energy healing." San Zhen

therapy is a wonderful way for clinicians or students

to estalish a pathway for returning the roots ofestalished systems of acupuncture as well astraining themselves to understand the vast options

inherent within simple cominations of traditionalacupuncture points.

%ne of the most important aspects of using andlearning San Zhen therapy is that is allows the

practitioner to refine his$her #nowledge ofacupuncture points as well as fine tune their

diagnostic s#ills. &ach point selected must have aclear reason and must e supported y thepattern$symptom presentation of the patient.'nother enefit for this streamlined approach is that

patients who are wary of needles experience less

stress which allows the treatment to wor# quic#lyand effectively. The following three-point

    positive clinical results.

comination as much or more often than the "3our4ates" of I5 and iv6 and find that it wor#s 7ust as

well if not etter for cases of depression orinsomnia. I often comine this three point como

with the three #oint combo of ear #oints:

This is an excellent three-point formula for issues

related to the eyes, particularly in patterns of0epressive heat due to iver QiStagnation and

iver 9ang (ising patterns. I have also used thisgroup of points in cases of insomnia and computer

related eye fatigue. It can also be use in cases ofacute an chronic sinusitis an allergies as the

In part two of this article, I will discuss each ofthese point cominations with case studies alongwith a discussion on specific needle manipulationtechniques for each three-needle comination.
