Atlantic ocean, with its guests, parties, tributes and films, the stars of occasion.

EPILOGUE iWhen t was established the continuity of an international film festivalsuch as this of Mar del Plata, that covers all ages Argentinians' tastes,

Cbetween the purposes of the National Institute of Cinema and AudiovisualArts of Argentina (INCAA), it became evident that Cinema is State's priorityin Culture and Communication areas.The public assisted massively to the cinemas and the Festival manifestednot only its capability in the diffusion of both Argentinian and LatinAmerican cinematographies, but also in dealing with the defense of a culturaldiversity that's verifiable in the multiplicity of the applicant countries.This vocation has been the dominating pattern under the encounter's differentsections, with its monographic views over contemporary Latin Americancinema —America Latina XXI Section—, and Woman and Film section,side by side with an abundant informative section —Point of View Section—and a series of retrospectives that vindicates the tradition of cinema as anauthor's personal search —Benoit Jacquot, Márta Mészaros, Olivier Assayasand Clint Eastwood—. All this parallel sections were represented, in itsturn, in the Official Competitive one.Among the guest that honored this shores were luminaries such as LivUllman, Krzysztof Zanussi, Ben Gazzara, Saul Zaentz, Taylor Hackford,Helen Mirren, Pino Solanas, Maria de Medeiros, Gabriela Tagliavini,Silvio Caiozzi and Nikita Mikhalkov, who knew how to happily reply to theSouth American fervor awakened by them in the audiences. Renewedpromises of world cinema, such as Dominique Choisy, César Paes andGahté Fofana, confirmed also how Latin American public could providebacking to their filmographies.A cinema festival is targeted towards everyone, both outsiders and insiders,and retrieves all of them in its oeuvre; puts on its service the thinkingprocess, sensibility and discussion criteria of creating countries thatdeclare their opinions through image eloquence. In an era where the factthat doesn't fixes in a camera doesn't exists, it's difficult to understandthe world if its not cinema who represents it.In conjunction to this, is already being developed the 17th Edition of theMar del Plata International Film Festival, which will take place betweenMarch 7th and 16th, 2002.

13IDDEIfinal de la temporada de verano de 2001, entre el 8 y el 17 de mar-

ha sido el marco de esta 16 a edición del Festival lnternacional de Cine

[:Zdoe, Mar del Plata que ha encandilado a este famoso balneario del Atlán-

tico sur con sus sus invitados, las fiestas, los homenajes y sus peliculas,

las estrellas del acontecimiento.

Cuando se puso, entre los objetivos del Instituto Nacional de Cine y Ar-

tes Audiovisuales de la Argentina, la continuidad de un festival interna-

Lcional de cine como es el de Mar del Plata, que abarca el gusto de los

argentinos de todas las edades, se volvió evidente que el cine es priori-

dad de Estado en los ámbitos de la cultura y de la comunicación.

El pUblico asistiO masivamente a las salas y el Festival manifesto capa-

cidad para difundir las cinematografIas argentina y latinoamericana.

También para encarar la defensa de la diversidad cultural verificable en

la multiplicidad de paises intervinientes.

Esta vocac ion ha sido el patron que domina las diferentes muestras del

encuentro, con sus secciones monograficas de cine latinoamericano

—America Latina XXI— y cine realizado por mujeres —La Mujer y el Cine-

codo con codo con la abundante secciOn informativa —Punto de Vista— y

una serie de retrospectivas que reivindica la tradición del cine como bUs-

queda personal de un autor —Benoit Jacquot, Márta Mészaros, Olivier

Assayas y Clint Eastwood—; todas estas muestras paralelas representa-

das, a su vez, en la Sección Oficial del concurso.

Entre los invitados que engalanaron estas costas hubo gente de la talla de

Liv Ullmann, Crzysztof Zanussi, Ben Gazzara, Saul Zaentz, Taylor Hackford,

Helen Mirren, Pino Solanas, Maria de Medeiros, Gabriela Tagliavini, Silvio

Caiozzi y Nikita Mijalkov, que supieron mostrarse felices por el fervor des-

pertado por ellos en el pUblico sudamericano. Asimismo, Ilegaron renova-

das promesas del cine mundial, tales como Dominique Choisy, César Paes

y Gahité Fofana, que han comprobado cOmo el pUblico latinoamericano

puede respaldar sus filmografias.

Un festival cinematografico se dirige a todos, los de afuera y los de aden-

tro y los convoca con su obra; pone a su servicio la sensibilidad, el pen-

samiento y los criterios de discusión de un pals creador que opina a tra-yes de la elocuencia de las imOgenes. En una era en que el hecho que

no se fija en una cámara no existe, es difIcil entender el mundo sin el

cine que lo representa.

Por este mismo motivo, se encuentra ya en preparaciOn la edición flUme-

ro 17 del Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata, que se desa-

rrollarO entre el 7 y el 16 de marzo de 2002.
