Offshore engineering involves fixed and floating structures associated with oil and gas, wind farms, wave energy extraction devices and tidal turbines. The geometric form of each must match the equally great variety of purpose and operation. With increasing water depth, fixed offshore jackets become semisubmersibles or floating production storage offloading (FPSO) or tension leg platforms (TLPS). Semisubmersible crane vessels facilitate offshore assembly through heavy lifting capability (up to 14,000 tonnes), whereas jack-up structures allow near-shore wind farm installations and work-over of seabed structures or pipelines. Hence, this course requires a rich mix of design, structural and hydrodynamic analyses and feasibility analysis with probabilistic appreciation of the operating climate.
