OPTIONS FOR READING
Almost There For children who are learning Spanish as an additional language or who need additional language support, you may wish to read the entire selection aloud first, stopping to monitor comprehension with the questions in Step 2.
On Track Invite children to “share the reading” by repeating sections you read, by echo-reading lines after you, and by identifying letters, punctuation, and words they recognize. Then use the questions in Step 2 to deepen comprehension.
Ready for More For children who need less scaffolding in reading the selection, encourage extension in other domains by grouping them heterogeneously for vocabulary, cross-domain linguistic practice, and the cross-linguistic bridge.

6Leamos juntos Paso 1 Un vistazo juntos• Muestre la primera página de Teo y su perro en la Revista Aventuras, lea el título en voz alta y pregunte:
¿Qué ven en la ilustración? (niños, un perro, patos, dulces, un barco, flores) ¿Creen que este texto será sobre
cosas reales o cosas no reales?

Step 1 Preview Together
• D isplay the first page of Teo y su perro in the Revista Aventuras. Read the title aloud and ask: What can you see in the illustration? (children, a dog, ducks, candy, a boat, flowers) Do you think this text will be about real or not real things? (about real things)
• Remind children that books have authors that write the words and illustrators that make the drawings. Explain that sometimes the same person who writes the words also makes the drawings. Have a volunteer point to the name on the cover. Explain: Although only the name of Violeta Denou appears on it, many people actually made the book. What did they do? (They wrote the words and made the drawings.)
• Tell children that some books tell stories about things that could happen in real life. These stories are called realistic fiction. Teo y su perro is an example of realistic fiction: although it is a made-up story, it is about something that could happen in real life because there are children and animals that do the same things as any children or animals do.
Reading Vocabulary Tell children that they may hear words they do not recognize as you read Teo y su perro together. Write the words of Reading Vocabulary from the Spanish column on the board and read them with children. Share the explanations with them.

Expand Academic Vocabulary
Step 1 Review Selection Vocabulary
Vocabulary Routine Use explanations and pictures to expand understanding of the vocabulary:
1 Write a sentence on the board, using the word.2 Read the word aloud.3 Explain the word.4 Discuss how the word is used in the text.5 Have children use a children’s dictionary to reinforce
learned vocabulary.
Step 2 Explore Content Vocabulary
Domain-Specific Vocabulary Remind children that in Teo y su perro, Teo has a dog called Puc, which he takes care of. Then, explain that this week’s topic is pets. Read the words in the Spanish column along with their definitions, and then have children answer the questions.
Build Word Knowledge Have children work in small groups. Distribute a large sheet of paper to each group with one Domain-Specific Vocabulary word written on it. Ask children to take turns drawing and writing or dictating something about the word. Then, have volunteers share their work.
Step 3 Vocabulary Strategies
Synonyms Explain that the words that mean the same thing, or nearly the same thing, are synonyms. Have children repeat the term. Display Teo y su perro, p. 24. Read the following sentence aloud: Teo is very angry with Puc because he gets into mischief. I can say Teo is cross with Puc. So angry and cross are synonyms, because they mean the same thing. Have children pantomime the following word pairs and decide whether they are synonyms, or words with similar meanings. Discuss shades of meaning when appropriate: see, look; (yes) bop, dance; (yes) cry, smile; (no) car, automobile; (yes)
acicalar limpiar, peinar a alguien o algo
entrenar enseñar a obedecer órdenes
Reparta a
cada grupo una hoja grande de papel que tenga escrita una de las palabras de Vocabulario específico de un
campo. Pida a los niños que se turnen para dibujar y escribir o dictar algo acerca de la palabra. Luego, pida a

Collaborative Conversations
Step 1 Discuss Conversation Skills
Teach the Collaborative Conversation Skill Explain that when someone says something, you may agree or disagree with what they are saying. Point out that when you agree, you say words like Yes, I agree, and Me, too. When you disagree, you say words such as No, I do not think so, and I disagree. Tell children that we may disagree with someone, but we must be polite even if we do not think the same way as them. Say: I think that a puppy is the best pet a person could have. Do you agree or disagree? Have children agree or disagree with you using these sentences: Yes, I agree; No, I do not agree.
Step 2 Guided Practice
Have children work in pairs. Invite children to think about Teo y su perro Ask: What do you think is Puc’s greatest mischief? Provide sentence frames for children to complete: I think ___ is Puc’s greatest mischief. Then ask, Do you agree? Provide sentence frames for children to complete: Yes, I . No, I . Make sure that each child gives an answer. Remind children to listen to each other’s opinions and ideas.
Step 3 Apply in Small Groups
Form Groups Explain to children that they will now work in small groups to create a couple of sentences that talk about their favorite pet. Ask each group to choose at least three verbs to describe what their favorite animal does. Explain that they should decide which animals to talk about and which verbs to use by sharing their opinions with the group, and either agreeing or disagreeing with their classmates. Ask volunteers from each group to present their sentences to the class.
Step 4 Connect Language Domains
Listen/Speak/Read/Write Write one or more sentences on the board and have children listen as you read it aloud. Then read it aloud in chunks, having students echo read each chunk. Have volunteers explain or demonstrate the meaning of each sentence. Finally, have children write the sentence as you dictate; allow them to look at the board for help; check children’s writing and help them make corrections. Then have them read aloud their own sentences to partners as you circulate to provide encouragement.

6Read the Paired TextShare and Analyze
Step 1 Preview Together
• Tell children that you will read together an informational text about different kinds of pets. Remind children that informational texts give facts about a topic and that the pictures are of real people, places, and things.
• Before you read the text, ask children what type of pet they would like to have. Then ask: How would you take care of that pet and what would you teach it?
• Display the first page and read the title. Ask: What do you think the text will be about? (different pets)
Step 2 Share the Text
Read the text aloud several times and use the following questions to check children’s understanding.
1 p. 36 How is this text similar to Teo y su perro? (In both texts there are children that have a dog they love very much.) SYNTHESIZE IDEAS/DOK 4
2 pp. 37–38 Can the turtle and the cat do and eat the same things? (no) Why? (Sample answer: because the turtle lives in an aquarium and the cat does not) COMPARE AND CONTRAST/DOK 3
3 p. 39 Why do you think the author displayed the rabbit and the hamster on the same page? (Sample answer: because both animals are soft and small) Do you think these pets need special care? (Answers will vary.) MAKE INFERENCES/DOK 3
Step 3 Unpack Meaning
• Guide children to notice how the author uses words to describe pets. Explain that we can describe a pet through its physical characteristics or way of being. Reread p. 36 and ask: What is the dog like? (sweet) Then reread p. 39 and ask: What is the rabbit like? (white and soft)
• Model how to use words to describe a pet.
Think Aloud If I want to explain someone what my ideal pet would be like, I use words to describe it. I can say what it is like on the outside: soft, white, black, sticky, hairy. I can also describe its way of being: playful, sleepy, naughty, sweet, cranky.
• Have children brainstorm ideas to find words to describe their ideal pet. Then, invite them to walk around the classroom pretending they are taking care of that ideal pet. Encourage children to ask each other questions about their pets, such as the following: What color is your pet? Is it big or small? What is its name? What does it eat?
COMPARE TEXTSWrite/Draw to Compare Ask children to think about what Teo in Teo y su perro and the children in ¡Yo quiero a mis mascotas! do to take care of their pets. Encourage them to discuss ways that the two texts are the same and different. What do the children in both books do to care for their pets? (They take their pets to be vaccinated; they train them; they take them for a walk; they keep them clean.) How are the characters in the two books different? (The children in ¡Yo quiero a mis mascotas! have different kinds of pets, while Teo only has a dog. Children do different things to take care of their pets.) Provide sentence frames. The children in both texts take care of their pets by . But they are different because . Have them make a drawing about each story and invite volunteers to present it to the class.
(no) ¿Por qué? (Respuesta posible:
¿Qué come?
COMPARAR TEXTOS

Cross-Linguistic BridgeConnecting Spanish and English
Step 1 I Do
Model the Thinking Draw a simple table like the one in the Spanish column, and begin adding words to the columns.
In the first column, write a selection word or a vocabulary word from this lesson. In the next column, write the English equivalent. Read each word aloud, and have children repeat it chorally. Then model thinking about whether the Spanish and English look and sound alike.
Step 2 We Do
Remind children that some words look and sound almost the same in English and Spanish. Usually this means that the Spanish word and the English word have the same meaning, or almost the same meaning. We call these words cognates.
If children are more advanced, you can remind them that this is not always true; examples, Simpatía and sympathy look the same but don’t mean the same. We call these false cognates, or false friends. Being Word Detectives can help us understand words in a new language.
Have children help you add words to your ongoing Bilingual Word Wall and Module Cognates Chart.
Step 3 You Do
Home Connection Distribute copies of Página imprimible: Mi caja de herramientas lingüísticas. Have children copy at least two sets of words from the group’s Word Detectives Chart. Help them correct their spellings, and encourage them to talk about what the words mean and what they learned about cognates. You may wish to send the page home to family members; suggestions for family members are provided at the bottom of the Página imprimible.
Review Revisit the Bilingual Word Wall and the Module Cognates Chart. Have volunteers tell how words from previous modules and lessons are similar and different. TRANSLANGUAGING

travesuras mischiefs no

En la primera columna, escriba una palabra de la selección o una palabra de vocabulario de esta lección. En la
siguiente columna, escriba el equivalente en inglés. Lea cada palabra en voz alta y pida a los niños que la
repitan a coro.

Nationality Adjectives In the poem “Home for You and Me”, the narrator tells us about where she was born and how she feels. She uses the nationality adjectives which tell us where a person or an object is from. Tell children that in the poem, there are three nationality adjectives and write them on the board (See the words in the Spanish column). Ask children: What do these three nationality adjectives have in common? (the -ana ending). Tell them that a lot of the nationality adjectives have this ending and that we use –ana for female and -ano for male. Have some pieces of paper ready with names of countries, cities, towns of which the nationality adjectives end with these suffixes. Ask a volunteer to take a piece of paper, show it to the group and try to guess the nationality adjective helping themselves with the examples on the board. Then ask another volunteer to do exactly the same until you finish the papers. (See some examples in the Spanish column). Finally, write the words Cuba and cubano on the board. Ask children: What difference can you see between these two words? (The country begins with a capital letter and the nationality adjective begins with lower case). Explain that nationality adjectives in Spanish begin with lower case letters: Cuban-cubano/a TRANSLAGUAGING

Verbs and the Five Senses In the story Camino de la escuela, the author tells us what is like to go to school for the first time and uses the different senses to tell us the experience. Tell children that human beings have five senses: vision, smell, touch, taste and hearing. Read the first sentence in the story aloud (See Spanish column). Ask children: Which verb does the author use in this sentence? (look, see). Are there any other similar actions in the story? (observe, watch). Divide children in four groups and give each group a particular sense. You can also give each group a picture of the organ linked to each sense. For example: you can hand in a picture of a nose to the group in charge of the sense of smell. Ask each group to identify in the story the sentences describing what the narrator feels with the corresponding sense. Finally, ask each group to tell their partners where they found that sense described and the verbs the narrator uses to tell us about what she sees, hears, smells and does at school. (See possible answers in the Spanish column.)
Conexión lingüística
Los gentilicios
En la poesía “Home for You and Me”, la narradora nos cuenta dónde nació y cómo se
siente.
minúscula: Cuban- cubano/a TRANSLANGUAGING

Me gusta oír . Me
Cultural Connection
On our way to school In the story Camino de la escuela, the author tells us what happens on her way to school. But in different countries, students attend school in different ways. Ask children: How can we get to school? (the school bus, by bike, on foot, family car). Tell children that in the United States and Canada half the students take the school bus. The school bus is very well-known because of its bright yellow color and because they can take lots of students. In Chile, school buses are usually smaller and yellow, too. But in Argentina they are usually orange and white. Ask them: Do you like going to school by bus or on foot? Do you like going by bike? (Answers will vary.)
Personal Connection
Our Way to School Tell children that they have already listened to another person’s experience on her way to school. They will now tell what they see, hear, feel and do on their way to school. Ask them to try to write the things and people they see, the things they hear, what they smell and the things they do when they get to school. You may help children with the following sentences to complete:
When I go to school, I can see . I like to hear . I love the smell of . And when I get to school .
You can also have children dictate the sentences for you to write them.
