Systematic Desensitization
DefinitionWith systematic desensitization a person can learn to cope with objects and situations that are particularly threatening, exposing real or imaginary stimuli to produce anxiogenic response form.The technique is very effective in combating classical phobias, chronic fears, some interpersonal anxiety reactions.
The repeated stimulus presentation makes it gradually loses its ability to evoke anxiety and hence physical discomfort, emotional or cognitive.It is essential to expose real or imagined to stimuli that produce anxiety-inducing emotions form.
Steps to follow
1. Relax muscles voluntarily. (Differential or progressive relaxation).
2. Make a list of all fears or anxiety-inducing situations.
3. Build a hierarchy of anxiety-inducing scenes from lower to higher intensity of anxiety.
4. Advance through imagination or through confrontation with the feared situations in the hierarchy.
Covert Sensitization
Covert sensitization is an imagery-based procedure and it’s used to treat destructive habits
The technique consists of having the person imagine himself or herself engaging in an undesirable behavior
When this image is vivid, the person imagines an aversive consequence associated with the behavior
The purpose of treatment is to build up an aversion toward stimuli which previously served as a source of attraction.
