In 2002, The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry,
Rural Development, Fishing and Food (sagarpa), through
The National Service of Seed Inspection and Certification
(snics), created The National System of Plant Genetic
Resources for Food and Agriculture (sinarefi), in order to
integrate actions and efforts to ensure the conservation
and sustainable use of plants that provide food, clothing,
fuel, ornaments; among other goods and that are
denominated plant genetic resources.
sinarefi fundamental basis are the networks, they
are formed by researchers from different disciplines
and institutions, universities, research centers, civil
associations, NGOs, producers and society in general.
Nowadays over 60 different institutions from all over
the country are taking part through 46 networks, each
network is in charge of a thematic network and 45 crops
whose center of origin and diversity is Mexico. They are
grouped in macro networks: Agricultural crops, Fruit
crops, Vegetables, Ornamental plants, Underutilized
species and Gene Banks.
With the aim to disseminate the agricultural diversity from
Mexico and to raise awareness about its importance and
value to the general public, as part of the Tenth sinarefi
Anniversary it was explored a different perspective, it
was combined science and art to offer a beautiful book
called ExpresArte de la Tierra. Tribute to Mexican
Native Crops, where there are presented watercolours
that were specially painted by the landscape artist J.
Cruz García Albarado, Cruzgaali, along with general
descriptions of the species, genera or families from
sinarefi networks.
Mexican plants are linked not only to our food and welfare;
they are also linked to our history and culture. It is our
hope that this integral vision, from an artistic perspective,
offers a new way to treasure our agrobiodiversity.

The plant genetic resources as wel as the animals were
the setting and sustenance of pre-Hispanic cultures.
They also embodied artistic creation: they were carved
in stone, bone, wood, jade, sea shells; they were also
modeled or expressed in pottery; they were painted
in codices and in the walls of their civil and religious
buildings. The Spanish conquistadors and colonizers
included them in their chronicles and descriptions, where
they often combined texts and drawings, as Gonzalo
Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, who in 1532 wrote: “As
I have said and drawn”. Afterwards, photography and
printing came out, hence art books or artwork became
present in books.
The book of J. Cruz García Albarado, better known as
Cruzgaali, is a truly tribute to native crops from Mexico
and to those who have preserved them for centuries; it
is also a great pleasure for those who have the privilege
to enjoy the book. It contains 46 paintings masterfully
achieved with watercolour technique and a unique vision
and color management. The works of art spring from his
knowledge and love for plant genetic resources; sown
by his father since his childhood and cultivated and
improved during his formal education and professional
development. His sources of inspiration are the beautiful
legends and traditions rooted in the Mexican popular
culture, as well as his experiences, both the accumulated
ones and those experienced during the creation of the
46 works of art.
Each watercolour includes general information about
the species, genus or family addressed by 46 networks
promoted by the National System of Plant Genetic
Resources for Food and Agriculture (sinarefi) for their
study, conservation and use: origin, taxonomy, diversity,
distribution and uses. As a link between the technical
information and each watercolour, there is a brief text
written by Cruzgaali in order to express briefly the
legend, tradition, experience or feeling that inspired him.
At the end, for those who are interested in having more
information, it is included a basic bibliography.

The work promoted by sinarefi emphasizes the technical
aspects of the plant genetic resources, though several
networks have shown their interest in the historical
references, artistic expressions and other ways to enjoy
them. In Pitaya and Pitahaya Network was born the
initiative to address the plant genetic resources from an
artistic point of view; as a result the books Pitahayas in
visual arts (2011) and Pitayas in visual arts, history and
literature (2012) were published. sinarefi has always been
open to these projects; fortunately in other networks it
has been disseminated the interest to observe the plant
genetic resources from different perspectives.
The idea for the book came from Cruzgaali, precisely
after the first publication from Pitaya and Pitahaya
Network, where there is included one of his first work of
art (Pitahaya, 1995). It was the starting point of a large
Pitahayas Art Collection of the Author.
Science is art, creative work; the artistic creation is applied
science. In both, it is generated knowledge and both are
means to disseminate knowledge. Cruzgaali is keen on
the relation between art and science and he found in
landscape a unifying element. In his autobiographical
note published in May 2002, he wrote: “My interest is to
find the formula that joins science and art into one. It is in
landscape architecture where my search seems to have
found a solution”. It is interesting to note the following
parallelism, something similar happened to José María
Velasco, the great Mexican landscape painter (1840-
1912) who passed away precisely a century ago, who in
his masterpieces combined art with science, especially
with botany and zoology as a means to capture and
document natural history.
The conservation, improvement and diversification of
plant genetic resources uses are essential. But the
insights from visual arts, traditions and legends are also
necessary, apart from being pleasing to the eye and spirit.
That awareness can contribute to highlight the importance
of plant genetic resources. I am completely certain that
this book made with so much love by Cruzgaali fully meets
this purpose and it will surely expand the insights and
treasuring of plant genetic resources.

In this book I gather technical aspects from Mexican
native crops and their artistic representation in
watercolour style that I have developed in my last years of
artistic production. The objective was to create a visually
appealing publication, with relevant contents and friendly
reading for a wide audience, both in Mexico and abroad.
The bilingual version seeks the recognition of Mexican
crops beyond our borders. Each watercolour contained
in the present book includes a data sheet that describes
the crop’s basic aspects; a constant is their national
importance. In order to write the data sheets, information
from specialized bibliographies was compiled; most of
them were the results from sinarefi research networks.
The participation of the network members with texts,
photographs, interviews and reviews was vital; sinarefi
team also played a preponderant role in proofreading
and translating texts.
Through visual expression, I allowed myself to create
shapes and combine colours in order to find the essence
of each of the 45 crops that are being honored, along
with the Gene Banks Network. Personally, it involved
an important challenge, since I tried to capture the
meeting between them and me, as if I had asked them
for permission. It was a fascinating story; the one lived in
recent months where I could discover what was behind
each crop. An important part in the creative process
was based in the inspiration that came to me just when I
was painting, in the accumulated experiences of my own
life and in my childhood memories in association with
legends, traditions and uses. All these ingredients allowed
me to cook a delicious Mexican dish, nurtured with
colours and textures, some of them with familiar shades,
though that was not the pretension, and yet it has been
the main challenge in this particular moment in my life.
The interpretation of the Works of arts may be endless,
as many as the number of people who observes them;
nevertheless, it was decided to add narrative texts to each
watercolour in order to provide an idea of what was the
inner motivation that touched me to create it.

The idea to make a book like this had been latent for some
time; however, it was fundamental the work carried out by
Adolfo Rodríguez Canto, author of two books related to
arts, one about pitayas and another on pitahayas. With his
kind support and advice I proposed the project to snics and
sinarefi who opened the great opportunity to show the native
crops from Mexico through an artistic expression, which is
something not very common, so I must recognize his vision.
With this book I move towards the crystallization to join art
with science; both require the creative process to innovate
and recreate what already exists. It is an evolutionary process
that takes time. It is here where I have found an opportunity
niche and it is thanks to my formal education in agricultural
sciences and my great passion and sensitivity for arts.
The title ExpresArte de la Tierra came up from the idea to pay
a deserved tribute, through art, to the Mexican native crops.
This tribute is also for the people that still conserve and sow
the seeds that bear fruits and allow us to be fed. It was when
agriculture came up, more than twelve thousand years ago,
that the process of collecting and domestication of plants
and animals started. From this continuous process is that
up to the present we have crops that have been an essential
part of our food. Culturally, they have had great significance;
for example, in the Popol Vuh, the Mayan Sacred book, it is
highlighted the importance of maize when they mention that
our bodies carry its essence. I think it is important to clarify
that the crops included here are considered to be endemic
from Mexico, though there are some that are distributed
in other latitudes, mainly in South America. However, the
importance of some species and their exclusive distribution
from Mexico makes them prominent for our culture.
This thoughts preceded by Enriqueta Molina Macía’s
presentation, snics General Director and the proem by Adolfo
Rodríguez Canto, professor and Researcher from Universidad
Autónoma Chapingo. The chapters are organized according
to sinarefi macro networks: Underutilized species, Agricultural
Crops, Fruit crops, Vegetables and Ornamental Plants. The
45 species, genera or families and the Gene Banks Network,
contain their data sheet, bibliography and acknowledgments,
as well as their respective watercolour and narrative text.
I invite you to the spiritual enjoyment and to the appreciation
of the crops that have shaped the Mexican culture and that
have allowed us to be alive.
