Second Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 19, 2020 ~ Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Possessed by the Holy Spirit. In the First Reading, like last week’s First Reading, we find the emphasis

on the chosen one to come who will help not only Israel, but all the nations. He will be a light to the nations, a title Jesus assumes when He proclaims Himself to be the light of the world. The Responsorial is intended to be applied to Jesus’ ministry, as the servant who does the Father’s will and the one who announces God’s jus-tice “in the vast assembly”. When we pray this psalm we too promise to participate in His mission, not by of-fering holocausts or sin-offerings, but by placing ourselves totally at the service of His mission. This is the only thing that will bring us true joy. In the Second Reading, St Paul tries to help the Corinthians have a more balanced approach to the Triune God. They over-emphasize the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives to the

point of almost excluding Jesus. So St Paul refers to Jesus over and over again, reminding them that He is the source and goal of all that they are. In today’s Gospel there is a different emphasis on the role of St John the Baptist. With other Gospel writers, St John the Baptist is seen as the herald of repentance, but here he is the witness to the fact that Jesus is the Son of God. His role, like ours, is to bring others to Jesus. We see the Holy Spirit descend upon Jesus and remain with Him in the form of a dove. Throughout His ministry, Jesus possesses the Holy Spirit. May our prayer lead us to be possessed by God’s Ho-ly Spirit and thus lead others to Him by our witness.

que la Primera Lectura de la semana pasada, encontramos el énfasis en el elegido que está por venir que ayudará no sólo a Israel, sino a todas las naciones. Será una luz para las naciones, un título que Jesús toma cuando se proclama a Sí mismo la luz del mundo. El Salmo Responsorial se debe de aplicar al ministerio de Jesús, como el sir-viente que hace la voluntad del Padre y uno que anuncia la justicia de Dios en la “gran asamblea”. Cuando oramos este salmo también pro-

metemos participar en su misión, no al ofrecer holocaustos o ofreciendo pecados, sino al ponernos totalmente al servicio de Su misión. Ésta es la única cosa que nos traerá felicidad verdadera. En la Segunda Lectura, San Pablo intenta ayudar a los Corintios a tener un aspecto más balanceado hacia el Dios Trinidad. Sobre-enfatizaban el papel del Espíritu Santo en sus vidas al punto de casí excluir a Jesús. Así que San Pablo se re-fiere a Jesús una y otra vez, recordándoles que Él es la fuente y meta de todo lo que ellos son. En el Evangelio de hoy hay un énfasis diferente en el papel de San Juan Bautista. Por medio de otros evangelistas, San Juan Bautista es visto como el heraldo del arrepentimiento, pero aquí es el testigo al hecho de que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. Su papel, como el nuestro, es traer a otros a Jesús. Vemos al Espíritu Santo bajar sobre Jesús y per-manecer con Él en la forma de una paloma. Durante Su ministerio, Jesús posee al Espíritu Santo. Que nuestra oración nos guíe a ser poseídos por el Espíritu Santo de Dios y así llevar a otros a Él por nuestro testimonio.
