A. Descripción del curso
Este curso ofrece un análisis de los problemas de gestión de riesgos dentro de la industria de los
negocios. Hace énfasis en la metodología y las técnicas empleadas en el análisis de riesgo, el control de
pérdidas, los modelos para la toma de decisiones y los procedimientos para administrar políticas de
gestión de riesgos relacionadas a riesgos no especulativos (asegurables). Además, el curso incorpora
aspectos de responsabilidad del producto, daños a la propiedad y lesiones físicas en el entorno
empresarial.
B. Objetivos de contenido del curso
Al finalizar el curso, el estudiante será capaz de:
1. Desarrollar un entendimiento válido de los métodos utilizados por corporaciones para
administrar riesgos y evaluar los diferentes tipos de riesgos existentes.
2. Explicar la importancia de las regulaciones en la industria de seguros.
3. Evaluar la cobertura de dueño de casa, sus límites de responsabilidad e identificar las principales
exclusiones.
4. Explicar las tres formas para proveer cobertura para gastos médicos, las características principales de
cada una de los tipos de póliza de vida.
5. Describir los factores utilizados para determinar el beneficio de retiro del seguro social e identificar los
elementos básicos de una anualidad.

C. Objetivos de lenguaje del curso
Al finalizar el curso, el estudiante será capaz de:
1. Interpretar información o datos con el fin de evaluar los posibles resultados, para hacer inferencias,
encontrar evidencia para apoyar generalizaciones y presentaciones, empleando estrategias de
atención efectiva para describir, evaluar y expandir en actividades sobre el manejo del riesgo en los
seguros.
2. Argumentar oralmente usando analogías, ilustraciones y ejemplos personales con el propósito de
explicar detalladamente las cubiertas de seguros de dueño de casa y de auto, y ser capaz de señalar
ventajas y desventajas de cada cubierta.
3. Integrar y resumir efectivamente las estrategias para entender los conceptos de planes médicos, su
implantación y desarrollo e interpretar a su vez lecturas e investigaciones según el lenguaje de cada
taller.
4. Utilizar estrategias de escritura para elaborar hipótesis, resúmenes y mapas conceptuales bajo un
marco teórico y empírico. Analizar información y utilizar herramientas de búsqueda de información
para discutir los conceptos claves dentro de los temas principales de cada taller, empleando la
gramática correcta del español.

A. Course Description
This course offers an analysis of the risk management problems in the business enterprise. It
emphasizes the methodology for risk analysis, techniques for risk, loss control, models for risk
management decision-making, and procedures for administering risk management policy relative to
non-speculative (insurable) risk. The course incorporates product liability, property damage, and bodily
injury in the business environment.
B. Course Content Objectives
Upon completing this course, the student will be able to
1. Develop a valid understanding of the methods used by corporations to manage risks and evaluate
the different types of existent risk.
2. Explain the importance of the regulations in the insurance industry.
3. Describe the homeowner coverage, responsibility limits and identify the principles exclusions.
4. Explain the three ways to provide coverage for major medical expenses, the main characteristics of
each type of life insurance.
5. Describe the factors used to determine the social security retirement benefit and identify the basic
elements of an annuity.

TALLER UNO
A. Objetivos de contenido
Durante el taller, el estudiante será capaz de:
1. Distinguir entre los tipos básicos de pólizas de seguros de salud de manera que explique las tres
formas para proveer cobertura para gastos médicos mayores.
2. Describir las características principales de la póliza de vida a término, póliza de vida completa,
póliza de vida universal, póliza de vida variable y establecer la aplicación apropiada para cada una
de ellas.
3. Explicar la responsabilidad contributiva federal aplicable al pago de prima de seguros de vida,
beneficios de fallecimiento y los pagos del efectivo acumulado en las pólizas de vida.
4. Interpretar los factores que se consideran en la contratación de pólizas de servicio de salud a largo
plazo e ingreso por incapacidad.
5. Explicar los elementos básicos de una anualidad e identificar situaciones en las cuales es
recomendable utilizar anualidades como herramienta para mitigar el riesgo financiero personal.

Durante el taller, el estudiante será capaz de:
1. Distinguir y comprender los diversos productos dentro de la industria de los seguros, específicamente
las principales características de la póliza de vida a término, según se desprenda de la presentación
que realice el facilitador.

seguros existentes.
3. Analizar las diferentes pólizas y sus cubiertas para los seguros de salud, según señalan las lecturas
asignadas.

4. Construir un documento que describa la cobertura apropiada de seguros para manejar los diferentes
tipos de riesgos personales, siguiendo los modelos provistos por el facilitador.

1. Utilice la Biblioteca Virtual, el libro de texto recomendado o los libros electrónicos, para
investigar sobre los tipos básicos de pólizas de seguros de salud. Prepare un resumen de las tres
formas para proveer cobertura y llévelo a clases para contribuir a la discusión del material y
aclarar dudas.
2. El facilitador creará un foro de discusión oral en Blackboard. En dicho foro, el estudiante
elaborará sobre los factores a considerar en la selección de pólizas de servicios de salud a largo
plazo e ingreso por incapacidad. El resto de la clase reaccionará oralmente a por lo menos tres
comentarios de los compañeros. Tome notas de la información más importante y llévelas a
clase.
3. Escriba un bosquejo de al menos dos páginas en el que explique los elementos básicos de una
anualidad. El facilitador enviará los trabajos escritos a SafeAssignTM para detectar casos de
plagio. Envíe su escrito al facilitador vía Blackboard. Llegue preparado a clase para que
abunde al respecto. El facilitador evaluará esta actividad con la Rúbrica de construcción de
párrafos (Apéndice B). Utilice el Apéndice C: The Writing Process: Six Trait Analytic Writing
Rubric como guía para redactor su trabajo escrito. Puede acceder a este documento a través de

4. Diseñe un diagrama de burbujas sobre cómo utilizar anualidades para mitigar riesgo. Prepárese
para participar en una actividad colaborativa en clase.
5. El facilitador creará un blog en Blackboard titulado la Póliza de Auto Personal y le dará acceso
a todos los estudiantes del curso. En dicho blog los alumnos elaborarán los siguientes temas y
contribuirán con resúmenes breves de artículos relacionados al tema:
a. Ventajas y desventajas de una póliza de vida a término.
b. Características de la póliza de vida completa.
Cada estudiante deberá compartir enlaces o textos completos de artículos periodísticos
confiables y serios sobre los temas a discutir, y elaborarán acerca de los mismos utilizando la
fuente de información de su elección.
6. El facilitador creará un foro de discusión escrita en Blackboard. Los estudiantes deberán
contestar las siguientes preguntas y elaborar en las respuestas. Además deberán leer y responder
a dos de las entradas de sus compañeros de clase.

7. Utilizando la Biblioteca Virtual, el libro de texto o el Centro de Recursos del Aprendizaje de su

i. Ahí encontrará por lo menos cinco carpetas. Si su curso se extiende por más de cinco
semanas, entonces necesitará crear el resto de las carpetas que falten. Al final, esta
sección contará con una carpeta por taller.
a) Semanalmente guardará todos los trabajos realizados y evaluados que le indique el
facilitador, junto a sus respectivas rúbricas, según la semana y la actividad que
corresponda.
b) De esa manera, su portafolio digital estará listo para que lo enriquezca con el
material educativo que usted genere, semana tras semana, a lo largo del curso.
E. Actividades de aplicación durante el taller
1. El facilitador proveerá a los estudiantes su información de contacto, y se elegirá al representante
estudiantil.
2. El facilitador explicará detenidamente los requisitos del curso, al mismo tiempo que se asegurará
de que el estudiante entienda las expectativas del mismo y sepa cómo se evaluará su desempeño.
3. El facilitador dividirá la clase en grupos de tres estudiantes. Cada estudiante se presentará y
discutirá su opinión sobre los objetivos del curso y sus expectativas al respecto. Cada grupo
seleccionará a un portavoz para que introduzca el grupo al resto de la clase. Cada grupo de
estudiantes preparará un listado con las expectativas discutidas en cada grupo, para proveer tanto
al facilitador como al grupo la dirección concreta sobre los aspectos más importantes a discutir en
clase.
4. Utilizando la información obtenida relacionada al tema de los tipos básicos póliza de seguros de
salud que trabajaron como parte de las actividades antes del taller, la clase se dividirá en tres
grupos. Cada grupo seleccionará un tipo básico de póliza y defenderá las ventajas, desventajas y
características del tipo de póliza seleccionado. Deberán presentar un análisis que sustente el
argumento que dichas características representan las ventajas de la póliza. Cada grupo preparará

una presentación de no más de 20 minutos para defender sus puntos. Después de cada
intervención, el facilitador guiará una ronda de preguntas para aclarar el conocimiento obtenido.
El lenguaje de esta actividad será evaluado utilizando el Apéndice E (Rúbrica de comunicación
oral). Puede acceder a este documento a través de la sección de Course Menu en Blackboard bajo
el enlace titulado Appendices: Language Rubrics. Recuerde incluir una copia del trabajo
corregido en el portafolio digital, junto a su rúbrica, bajo la semana que le corresponde.
5. Los estudiantes escribirán su autorreflexión basados en sus diagramas relacionados a la
utilización de anualidades para mitigar el riesgo. Seleccionarán los puntos que ellos entiendan son
los más importantes. El facilitador podrá elegir otro tema que promueva la autorreflexión
individual. Si el tiempo apremia y el facilitador lo estima necesario, el estudiante podrá entregar
su autorreflexión luego de culminado el taller, y deberá entregarlo en la fecha estipulada, antes de
comenzar el próximo taller (Workshop Two).

During the workshop, the student will be able to
1. State the four major exclusions of the Personal Automobile Policy to explain how no-fault auto
insurance operates and how it may reduce auto insurance costs.
2. Explain the basic coverage in a homeowners’ policy and the limits of liability for each.
3. Describe how additional living expense losses are determined and how the loss settlement clause in
the homeowner’s policy operates.
4. Explain the doctrine of concurrent causation and its role in property insurance policies.
5. Explain the coverage in the comprehensive personal liability (CPL) section of the homeowner’s
policy and identify its major exclusions and determine the appropriate insurance coverage for a
personal risk management program.

1. Clearly identify the perils insured in homeowner’s policies in order to provide effective feedback
based on the presentations delivered in class and discussion forums.
2. Effectively explain, with clear and precise language, the basic coverage in homeowner policy with

3. Comprehend information related to coverage in the comprehensive personal liability (CPL) and
identifies most important exclusions, through discussion forums employing the readings provided
by the facilitator for the workshop.

motorist’s coverage. Summarize the most important aspects of it in writing and bring to class for

2. Familiarize yourself with the technical vocabulary of the discipline of the workshop by
paraphrasing the definition of each term. Prepare a list with the terms including a brief explanation
of each and their application in the Risk and Insurance industry. Be prepared to apply your
knowledge during the workshop in a variety of collaborative activities.
3. Prepare an outline about the Commercial Automobile Policy and list its benefits. Be prepared to
participate in a cooperative learning activity in class.
4. Go to the VoiceThread link created by the facilitator in Blackboard and orally discuss HO-6
homeowner’s insurance coverage.
a. Record yourself and upload the recording by clicking on the Submit Assignment icon. Be sure to
select the Share with class feature.
b. Afterward, listen and provide feedback to the delivery of at least three of your colleagues’
recordings.

c. Make sure to take notes on fundamental aspects of the information you searched and that of
your colleague’s contributions.
d. Bring the notes to class to elaborate during a group activity.
e. The facilitator will evaluate this activity using the Oral Communication Skills Rubric
(Appendix E). This rubric can be accessed in the Course Menu section of Blackboard under the
link titled Appendices: Language Rubrics.
5. Compose a 500-word essay about the importance of a homeowner’s policy.
a. Be sure to write according to APA, include citations and references, and proofread your written
work to ensure correct grammar and usage of punctuation in order to express your ideas with
clarity.
b. Save your document (critical analysis) in a PDF format and upload it to E-Lab tool known as
NetTutor.
i. In order to submit your document to the NetTutor Paper Center, access the E-Lab tools,
found in the course menu section in Blackboard.
ii. Then, click on the Dual Language Program: Online Writing Lab icon.
iii. Next, select the NetTutor Paper Center and click on the Upload a Paper to NetTutor icon.
c. Incorporate NetTutor’s feedback into your paragraphs and submit your revised document by
uploading it to the assignment area of the course in Blackboard.

E. Application Activities during the Workshop
1. The students will lead the class in a review of the topics discussed in the previous workshop to
ensure students’ comprehension. Students will share one concept learned so far that was
challenging to understand and explain what helped them learn the concept.
2. The class will be divided into small groups. Each group will discuss their outline on the
questions related to automobile insurance rates. After each group is finished, they will present
their conclusions in front of the class.
3. The court is in session! The facilitator will divide the class in three groups and will assign the
case presented in the YouTube video assigned as part of the activities prior to the workshop.
One group will defend the Insurance Company’s way to handle small crashes; another group will
defend the consumer and will research for an alternative. Then each debating group will present
their point to the jury (the third group) and they will deliberate to select the best solution. The
facilitator will evaluate this activity using Appendix H (Role-playing Rubric). This rubric can be
accessed in the Course Menu section of Blackboard under the link titled Appendices: Language
Rubrics.
4. The facilitator will divide the class in two groups and will assign each group with one of the
following subjects: Risk Management for Auto Owners or Risk Management for Homeowners.

2. Let’s roll the dice! The facilitator will have a box or bag with numbers, as students
arrive, they will select a number from the box or bag. The facilitator will select the first
student to roll the dice and call the number; the student with that number will discuss his
or her article or news event related to insurance to the class and will roll the dice for the
next student.
3. The facilitator will divide the class in two groups for a debate activity. One group will
research the advantages of social insurance program in the US, while the other group
will research social insurance program in other countries. The groups will then defend
each of their points of view and the class will discuss the advantages and disadvantages
of each option. Students are invited to take a side they are least inclined to select, as a
way of intersecting subjective outlooks with potential learning topics. Make sure to
keep the use of correct language at all times, carefully listening to each colleague’s

a. The facilitator will ask one student to define and explain the concept of Risk and
Insurance.
b. Once the student has finished, the facilitator will ask if anyone has an objection with
the information presented.
c. If yes, the facilitator will ask a student to present the objection.
d. If the group agrees with the original information the facilitator will ask for another
student to provide supporting information to the definition and explanation provided.
e. The facilitator will continue the discussion by allowing students to present their
objections of supporting information.
f. Other topics will be included by the facilitator as part of the activity.
6. The students will write a self-reflection on the federal income-tax advantages to
employees in a qualified retirement plan. The facilitator may select a different topic
discussed during the workshop. If deemed necessary, the facilitator may ask students to
send this activity after Workshop Four, but before Workshop Five/Taller Cinco.

a) Actividades en español

1. Write a two-page essay about Systemic risk. Be sure to use APA style, include
bibliographic citations and references, and submit to NetTutor for feedback. The
facilitator will send written works to SafeAssignTM to check for plagiarism. The

(Appendix B).
2. Use the Virtual Library to find potential research areas within the industry of risk and
insurance. Also, find specific information on existing prohibitions insurance the
agent face that are strictly enforced by the state government. Create a list of the areas
and their importance and the existing prohibitions for discussion.
3. Go to Rosetta Stone Advantage and complete all the corresponding activities
designed to develop/improve linguistic skills in English and Spanish. Focus your
efforts in pronunciation exercises.
4. Finalize the digital portfolio ensuring that you have accurately complied with all the
guidelines stipulated in the Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook.
Submit the portfolio according to the facilitator’s instructions.
5. Prepare for the second partial test that the facilitator will administer in English, at the
time deemed most appropriate, during the last two hours of the workshop.
