FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

An ounce of prevention is worth avoiding being exposed to COVID-19! There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent ill-ness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday pre-ventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including: • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or

wipe. • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask. CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from res-piratory diseases, including COVID-19. Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility). • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bath-

room; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

Catholics abstain from meat on all Fridays during Lent for many reasons. It is a sacrifice—a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice on Good Friday. It is an act of humility as we eat modestly. It is an experience of solidarity with those who go without. It is penance for our past wrongdoings and an exercise in discipline to help us abstain from sin in the future. It is a form of prepara-tion as we hunger, symbolically, for the eucharistic meal. Jesus fasted to draw closer to God and draw upon him for help. Now’s your chance to do the same.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD This is a weekly Lenten study...join as a group, as an individual or ask to be add-ed to a group. Father Andrew Apostoli provides simple steps to holiness that can help us grow in prayer, conquer our faults and acquire virtues that enable us to grow in intimacy and walk more closely with God. For more information contact Molly Smith in the parish office.

CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risk-ing it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disci-ples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Ladies, let’s paint the night red—and pink, green, and yel-low—at this month’s S.O.S. meeting! Our special guest Victoria Rivera, lead program coordinator at Vocation Minis-try, will speak on the mysteries of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Heart before lead-ing us in painting our very own

image of it. These take-home paintings will serve as a reminder of the mission we are called to during Lent and beyond. Come spread your artistic wings on Thursday, March 19th @ 6:30pm in Kolbe Hall! All painting supplies will be provided, so simply bring an open heart, a potluck dish (if you would like), and a friend for an evening of fine art, fine food, and faithful re-flection. Contact Deena Everest at [email protected] or Mayra Wade at [email protected] with questions.

Please!! Do not tape, staple, or glue your offertory/donation envelopes.

That we may learn the difference between what we want and what we need, trusting that God will provide all that we need. “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.” Genesis 12:1 God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be materialism, selfishness and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live. Remember what St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “God does not call us to be successful, God calls us to be faithful.”

Diocesan Services Fund 2020 "Bring Your Greatest Gifts to the Lord"

As the new year begins, please remember the indi-viduals and families in our Diocese with special needs. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has over 60 ministries, funded in large part by DSF con-tributions, whose purpose is to help these people in need. A few of these ministries offer help and sup-port for the poor, the sick, and the incarcerated; help with catechesis and evangelization; and help with preparation, support, and outreach to our Cler-gy. Please consider a donation to DSF. A little amount from each of us means a great deal to many.
