First Sunday of Advent

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“Stay awake! … you also must be prepared for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” [Matt 24:44]

What time is it? Time to start over. Advent in a different kind of time. Today we begin our annual pilgrimage to Christmas. In Latin, advent is ad-venio: “to come to.” Advent is an exciting time when we prepare to celebrate that Christ “came to” us, lived with us, taught us, healed and saved us, and will come again to bring justice and peace. Yes, Christ came in the past and Christ will come again, but Christ is here, coming in the present as we invite him into our hearts and lives now. The miracle of Christ-mas comes for each of us between now and the end of the Christmas season at the Baptism of the Lord. So stay awake and watch out, prepare your heart to meet Christ again for the first time.

We have so many rich traditions and rituals that will help us do this! Advent wreathes and calen-dars, Advent prayer books, Christmas cards, Jessie trees, the special poetic scriptures each day of this season. We invite you to come to daily Mass more often and meet the Advent saints and stories that will keep you wide awake. Don't forget to plan on getting your heart ready as you getting everything else ready for Christmas! Why not make this your best Advent ever?

Please, stay awake to the Penitential Rite of the English Mass [Option #2 on page 4 of Breaking Bread] that we will be using for the next few months!

Question for the week: Why and for what are you waiting? What “armor of light” would you like to put on?

Word for the week: “stay awake!” being prepared for the coming of Christ, watching and waiting ex-pectantly, alert and awake of our tendencies to be-come lethargic or complacent.

“Quédense despiertos! … y Prepárense porque a la hora que no lo esperen, el Hijo del Hombre vendrá.” [Mateo 24:44]

¿Qué hora es? Hora de empezar de nuevo. Adviento es un tipo diferente de tiempo. Hoy comenzamos nuestra pe-regrinación anual a Navidad. En latín, el advenimiento es ad-venio: "venir a". El advenimiento es un momento emo-cionante cuando nos preparamos para celebrar que Cristo "vino a" nosotros, vivió con nosotros, nos enseñó, nos curó y nos salvó, y vendrá nuevamente a traer justicia y paz. Sí, Cristo vino en el pasado y Cristo vendrá de nuevo, pero Cristo está aquí, viniendo en el presente mientras lo invita-mos a nuestros corazones y vidas ahora mismo. El milagro de la Navidad llega para cada uno de nosotros desde aho-ra hasta el final de la temporada navideña en el Bautismo del Señor. Así que mantente despierto y ten cuidado, pre-para tu corazón para encontrar a Cristo nuevamente por primera vez.

¡Tenemos tantas ricas tradiciones y rituales que nos ayudarán a hacer esto! Guirnaldas y calendarios de Ad-viento, libros de oración de Adviento, tarjetas de Navidad, árboles de Jessie, las escrituras poéticas especiales cada día de esta temporada. RCIA Classes continue in a new cycle twice a month on Thursday nights, again on Thursday, De-cember 5 at 7:15 PM, as we ponder the meaning of the Mass and its history. RCIA is a process of information, formation and transfor-mation into a Catholic identity. Those inquirers who complete the 8-9 month process may wish to be received into full com-munion with the Church, baptized-confirmed and make their first Holy Communion. Others may just wish to accompany those who are learning. Please welcome newcomer Jamie Cook at the Saturday night Mass next week, November 30, as his sponsor, Dave Cahill introduces him at the first of the Rites of Christian Initiation at the Saturday evening Mass.
