    History

Prior to 1992, nodownhole processing wasperformed except thatrelated to conventional

    artificial lift of wells.

By 2002, there wereapproximately 50downhole water

    separation/injectioninstallations andapproximately 60downhole gas/liquid

    separation installations.

    Methods Downhole Gas

    Separator

The first attempt to correct inefficient downhole

gas separation should be to set the pump

below the fluid entry zone if feasible. This is

the most efficient method of downhole gasseparation.

However, if the pump is set above the fluid

entry zone, a gas separator should be used

that offers an efficient gas/liquid separation

chamber with low dip tube friction loss which

results in complete pump fillage if sufficient

liquid inflow into the wellbore is available.

    Methods Downhole Gas

    Separator

A gas separator is still anintake with special featuresto keep free gas from

entering the pump. Static gas separators use

reverse direction of fluid tocause more gas to move upthe annulus allowing fluid to

    pump. Dynamic gas separator can

distinguished into 3 internalsections: pressure increase

    chamber, separationchamber, and by pass.

    Variable Speed Drives (VSD) -

    1

Used as surface control package in all wellswith high volumes of gas

    Advantage

Have the ability to control and manage startupand operations in gassy environments

keep the well producing longer through gasslugging flows

Combining the downhole monitoring systemand the VSD is a highly effective method ofoperating ESP's in gassy environments

Allows for automatic control of production rate

    and fluid level

    Design

    Maximum gas/water ratio

    (Rm) is a key parameter.

Rm depends on the typeand geometrical structure

    of separator obtained by

    lab experiments or CFD

    study.

    Advantages

Benefits of using downhole gas separator: Extend run time

    Increase mean time between failures

Low NPSH impeller and blender XGC reduce gas

    interference High-volume XGVS separator

    Minimize pump downtime and restarts

    Provide optimization of production rates

    VSD: Flexibility

    Optimization well production

    Starting characteristics

    Energy saving

    Disadvantages

    Gas separator:

    Apa?

    VSD:

    Electrical disturbance

    Power operating requirements

Personnel required for operationHigh initial cost

    Improvements

    The first is metering of

    the quality and volume of

    the injectant stream.

    These must be knownfor:

    reservoir management

    well surveillance

    prevention of formation

    damage.

    Improvements

    Downhole separator for

    gas reinjection or for

artificial lift are likely to be

    proven feasible.

    Extend the lives of

    existing mature wells

Improve the economics ofnew wells in deep water

    and in remote satellite

    areas
