A Reflection on Today’s Readings “… And So Revealed His Glory …”

Today’s readings speak eloquently about the theological mysteries of God’s mercy. The first reading … announces the end of Israel’s exile. The exile happened because the people broke their covenant with God. But the Lord’s mercy and love for the people is so great that it restores the bond between them. The Gospel reading focuses on the mercy of the Incarnation. In Ephesus, John’s community knew many synagogues that said Jesus was a great prophet but not divine. They also knew of the Docetists, who said Christ was only divine and not at all human. John attempts to show that Christ is both fully human and fully divine throughout his gospel account. In this particular example, Jesus performs an incredible miracle to show his divine authority. But he acts on the behest of his mother. John shows us Jesus, prompted by his mother, responding to a human need with divine mercy as he performs his first sign – an apt portrait of the Incarnation. – At Home with the Word

Sophia, ChurchMouse Reporting unseen works of faith, hope and charity to uplift you.

Thought you might appreciate this verse attributed to William Shakespeare. Time is very slow for those who wit; very fast for those who are scared; very long for those who lament; and very short for those who celebrate. But for those who love, time is eternal.

“This week of prayer comes around again punctually, to arouse the consciences of Christians to examine themselves under God’s eyes on the question of regaining full unity.

Christians are rediscovering with increasing lucidity how partial but true communion already exists, and, before God and with His help, they are moving toward unity. They are moving toward that goal by beginning with prayer to the Lord, to Him who purifies and liberates, who redeems and unites … We must be very attentive and make sure that prayer does not lose that power of turning things upside down which ought to shake consciences of all about the division of Christians, ‘which openly contradicts the will of Christ, provides a stumbling block to the world, and inflicts damage on the most holy cause of proclaiming the good news to every creature.’” – Pope John Paul II, Prayers and Devotions * * * * * * * *

Special Thanks to a Special Young Lady

A young lady named Ella stopped by our Rectory this week. Her grandfather had given her $25 at Christmas with the instructions that she was to find a cause she deemed worthy and donate it there. She had seen the people lining up daily for our Breakfast Line – and decided this is where she wanted her money to go. May her graciousness and generosity be an example to us all!
