Estimada Familia de la Catedral de Santiago,
Los apóstoles tenían miedo. El Evangelio de hoy describe
la tarde del día de la resurrección. Habían escuchado el informe
de María Magdalena a primera hora de la mañana; habían
escuchado los informes de los dos que se dirigían a Emaús,
que se apresuraron a regresar para contarles su expe-
riencia; habían escuchado el testimonio de Pedro mismo a
quien Jesús se le había aparecido en algún momento. Los
ecos de la multitud en el patio de Pilatos: "crucifícale" todavía
resonaban en sus oídos mientras se acurrucaban de miedo.
Y luego Santo Tomás, una historia acerca de la confianza.
Lo que la mayoría de la gente recuerda acerca de Tomás es
su corto tiempo de duda. "La duda de Tomás" se ha convertido
en sinónimo de ser obstinado o escéptico. No fue que
Tomás dudó; él no creyó. Tomás, como la mayoría de nosotros,

"No voy a creer".
Sin embargo, Tomás estuvo presente una semana después;

pudo haber creído con más fuerza en ese momento que

Tomás, como los demás, fue "llamado" y "enviado". Nosotros
también somos llamados y enviados. Somos los herederos
espirituales de esa comunidad. Escuchamos la directriz de
la misión de Jesús. "Como el padre me envió, así les envío"
se aplica a nosotros también. Necesitamos ser testigos
también. No podemos esperar a que seamos perfectos.
¡Estamos llamados aquí y ahora! El nombre para esto es
evangelización, contar las buenas nuevas—ser testigos.
No significa que tenemos que saber todas las respuestas;
los apóstoles no las sabían. No significa que tenemos que
ser perfectos; los apóstoles no lo fueron. No significa que
nuestros líderes pueden resolver todos los problemas; segura-
mente ellos no pueden. Significa, que demos testimonio a
otros de que hemos visto y que hemos experimentado la
bondad y el amor del Señor.
¡Los invito a celebrar la resurrección acercándose a otros
con entusiasmo, para que "vengan y vean" y para ofrecerles
la vida de Jesús resucitado!

Dear St. James Cathedral Family,
All the apostles were fearful. Today’s Gospel describes the
evening of the day of resurrection. They had heard the
report of Mary Magdalene in the early morning; they had
heard the reports of the two on their way to Emmaus who
had hurried back to tell them of their experience; they had
heard the testimony of Peter himself to whom Jesus had
appeared sometime in between. The echoes of the crowd in
Pilate’s courtyard: “crucify him” were still ringing in their
ears as they huddled in fear.
And then we get to St. Thomas, a story most of all about
trust. All most people remember about Thomas is his short
time of doubt. “Doubting Thomas” has become synonymous
with being stubborn or a skeptic. It was not that Thomas
doubted; he did not believe. Thomas, like most of us, wanted
proof and evidence of the resurrection. That is what he
states: “I will not believe.”
Yet Thomas was present one week later; he does not place
his fingers in Jesus’ wounds although the Lord invites him
to do so. Thomas’ reaction to the presence of the Lord is,
“My Lord and my God.” In a way Thomas may have believed
more strongly at that moment than any of the others.
Thomas, like the others, was “called” and “sent.” We, too,
are called and sent. We are the spiritual heirs of that community.
We heard Jesus’ mission directive. “As the father sent me,
so I send you” applies to us as well. We need to witness,
too. We cannot wait to witness until we are perfect. We
are called to witness here and now! The name for this is
evangelization, telling the good news – being a witness.
It does not mean that we have to know all the answers; the
apostles did not. It does not mean that we have to be perfect;
the apostles surely were not. It does not mean that that
our leaders can solve all problems; surely they cannot. It
does mean that we witness to others that we have seen and
experienced the Lord’s goodness and love.
I invite you to celebrate the resurrection by reaching out
with enthusiasm, to “come and see,” to offer someone the
life of the risen Jesus!

Question for Children: Jesus appeared to the disciples even though they were afraid and locked in the closed room. How can you show Jesus to another person this week by how you act?
Question for Youth: Thomas didn’t believe because he hadn’t seen Jesus with his own eyes. How hard is it for you to believe in God without being able to see God? How do you see God in the words and actions of others?
Question for Adults: Jesus said: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Give one example of how you will show your belief in Jesus this week - how you are being sent forth.

Reasons for leaving The study, Going, Going, Gone! The Dynamics of Disaffiliation in Young Catholics, is based on a national survey and interviews with 214 former Catholics between the ages of 15 and 25. “This study was all about young people telling their stories of why they left the Church in their own words, uncensored and unfiltered,” explained Vitek in a press release on the study. CARA researchers identified patterns among the young people’s personal stories and described three archetypes for their Catholic disaffiliation: the injured, the drifter, and the dissenter. The “injured” are young people who experienced a hardship or tragedy in which God seemed to be absent. Despite their prayers, their parents divorced or ill family members died, for example. One young man told the researchers that he remembers family and loved ones praying for his grandfather with lung cancer, “everyone is praying for him, probably over 150 people. Personally praying for him and still there was nothing done to help him and that was my first skepticism.” The “drifter” is one who typically had trouble connecting their identity as a baptized Catholic to their concrete life experiences in the real world. They struggled to articulate why being Catholic matters, so they just drifted away from the Church. The researchers noted the influence that parents can have on this drifting away from the Church and that a family unit can drift together when parents feel inadequate to explain why the faith matters. Researchers encountered a more active rejection of the faith in those in the “dissenter” category. Some of these young people cited disagreement with Church teaching on birth control, same-sex marriage, and sexuality as the precipitat-ing force for their departure. Notably, only two percent of respondents cited the clergy sex abuse scandal as a reason they left the Church. Vitek explained to CNA that there can be intersections between these three common categories, saying, “a young person may first have a disruptive experience that causes them to feel hurt or broken in some way, that brokenness might lead the young person to begin to question and doubt their faith, and their unresolved doubt may lead them to drift away.”
