Halloween Saludable: ¿Truco o trato?

ACE’S LUCK Y TRAY

ACE knows that heroes aren’t just super-powered characters in comic books and movies. There are heroes all around us who go above and beyond to make the world a better place every day. This month ACE and his friends are helping students learn about doctors. Students will also learn the importance of nutrition in being their best, no matter what they are doing. Students will have a chance to win a color changing cup and learn all about doctors as Healthy Heroes when they get a tray lunch on ACE Lucky Tray Days. This month’s ACE Lucky Tray Days are Friday, Oct 11th and Friday Oct 25th.

Healthy Halloween: Trick or Treat? Contributed by HISD Nutrition Education Dietitian, Jennifer Griffin Lengyel MS,RD,LDParents – do not fear the bagful of sweets your child brings home! It is possible to have a safe and healthy Halloween holiday. Prevent a trip to the doctor or dentist by trying some of these healthy alternatives to sweetened treats. Try tricking your “trick-or-treaters” with one of the following Healthy Fall Favorites:

Fill your October with some Healthy Fun Fall Favorites! Contributed by HISD Nutrition Education Dietitian, Jennifer Griffin Lengyel MS,RD,LD

There is a lot to celebrate in October – and a lot of delicious fall foods to eat too! This month is National Apple Month. An apple a day, keeps the doctor (and dentist) away – so get your serving of Red Delicious, Jonagold, Granny Smith, or Pink Lady varieties. This is the peak season for these types of apples which means they taste the freshest and the best when eaten in October. Not only are apples a tasty fall fruit, but also contain a significant source of fiber and Vitamin C. Both of these nutrients are essential to keep your body healthy!

Go nuts on October 22 for National Nut Day! Nuts are a great snack or addition to your meal. These tasty morsels contain healthy fats (that’s right – healthy fats exist!) called omega-3 fatty acids. These good-for-you-fats act as antioxidants (aka. Superheroes) which protect your body and improve your immune system. October is the beginning of pecan tree harvesting. Try a handful of pecans in between meals or top your salad with a few for a great boost in health and delicious fall season treat!

o Roasted Pumpkin Seeds (use the ones from your pumpkin Jack-O-Lantern!)

o Caramel Appleso Yogurt Raisinso Kettle Popcorn (Popcorn with a pinch of salt and sugar)

o Gold Fisho Sugar-free gum or candieso Granola Barso Non-food items: stickers, temporary

tattoos, yo-yo, pencils, etc.
