Fair 2020

Dear parents/guardians,

Your child has been invited to participate in the McKinley Elementary School STEM Fair, an exciting event that encourages students to think and act like young scientists and engineers. During the next few weeks your child will be designing a project that uses the scientific inquiry or the engineering process to solve a problem or answer a question. We hope you agree that the educational benefits are numerous, as students develop skills in writing, oral presentation, creative thinking, and problem solving. ***PLEASE SEE THE NEXT PAGE ABOUT CHANGES TO THIS YEAR’S JUDGING AND PRESENTATION PROCESS***

As this is an independent research based project, most of the work will be completed at home, we ask that you encourage your child and monitor his or her progress along the way. Your support is key to a successful project, but please do not allow your involvement to extend any further in order to assure equity and promote student learning. Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child's individual effort and design.

All students will be provided a display board. These will be available for pickup before and after school when your child submits the attached signed contract and project proposal form. These forms are due NO LATER than Monday, March 2nd for your child to be eligible to participate.

Please read the STEM packet with your child and sign the necessary forms. Let me know if you'd like more information on creating a successful science fair project. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

***New this year for STEM FAIR*** Based on feedback received from previous years of STEM fair, and in an effort to condense the amount of time the judging takes, while still allowing students the full experience of giving a presentation, we will be changing the STEM Fair judging procedures. This year, we are asking you to film your child’s presentation (in front of their completed project board) and submit the video to Ms. Oyenoki by Friday, March 20th. Details will be forthcoming about how to submit your child’s video. * These videos will be sent to the judges PRIOR to the date of the actual STEM Fair where they will score and comment on each student’s project. From the video presentations, the judges will narrow down the finalists. Please be assured that these videos will not be viewed by anyone besides the STEM Fair judges. On the day of the actual STEM Fair, all students will come and set up their project and there will be allotted time for parents and friends to view the projects and hear student presentations as in previous years, as well as for participants to look at their peer’s projects, after which the winners will be announced. Even though all students’ presentations will be pre-recorded, they will still need to attend the actual STEM Fair as the finalists will not be announced until that evening, and if a finalist is not present, they will not be eligible to win. If you any questions about the STEM fair video procedures, please contact Ms. Oyenoki. *Note: If you are unable to video your child’s presentation, please contact Ms. Oyenoki who will make arrangements to do so for you.

McKINLEY SCIENTIST: Your mission (if you choose to accept it) is to complete a project using science, technology, engineering, or math to explore a question or solve a problem that YOU choose.

Step 1: Choose a question or area that you would like to explore using scientific experimentation OR engineer a solution to a problem that you would like to solve.

Step 2: Turn in your contract and proposal form in the box in the office (or have your parents email it to Ms. Oyenoki). Once your paperwork is received, Ms. Oyenoki will give you your display board and the STEM fair project guide with more information on how to complete your project, what your display board should look like, and how to do your presentation.

STEM FAIR RULES

1. Number one rule: SAFETY FIRST. Make sure you have recruited your adultsto help you. Wear protective goggles when doing any experiment thatcould lead to eye injury. If there are dangerous aspects of yourexperiment, like using a sharp tool or experimenting with electricity, pleasehave an adult help you or have them do the dangerous parts.

2. Students may work with ONE other student in their SAME grade level.Partners will be judged as one entry and will only receive one poster,however, BOTH students must return SIGNED contract and proposal forms.

3. Participants may only spend up to $30.00 on any materials. We encouragestudents to keep sustainability in mind and use as many recycled materialsas possible.

4. Eligible projects MAY NOT come solely from a purchased kit.

5. Students MAY NOT repeat experiments done in their classrooms or duringscience lab. However, students are encouraged to use the ideas they havelearned as a starting point for their projects.

6. Caustic chemicals or flammables are NOT allowed.

7. Respect all life forms. Animals are not allowed to be used in experiments.Do not perform an experiment that will harm a person.

8. Any project that involves animals, drugs, firearms, or explosives are NOTpermitted.

9. Any project that breaks district policy, and/or local, state, or federal lawsare NOT permitted.

10. Use safety on the Internet! NEVER write to anyone withoutan adult knowing about it. Be sure to let an adult know whatwebsites you will be visiting, or have them help you search.

• The girls meet at Gandara Park located at 1819 Stewart St., south of Olympic Blvd. The Rosie’s Girls Clubhouse is adjacent to Gandara Park in the City Maintenance Yards at 2500 Michigan Ave. At the end of the day, girls are picked up from Gandara Park.
