INTRODUCTIONIF by Rudyard Kipling
PRE-TASK:
The poem IFby Rudyard Kipling is a didactic poem teaching us about
the qualities that make a good leader.
With your partner, discuss the qualities that you think make a good
leader. Find an example of a good leader, or someone you admire, and state what qualities they have.
TEXT:
IF you can keep your head when all about you1
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,2
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,3
But make allowance for their doubting too;4
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,5 Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,6
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,7
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:8
9
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;10
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;11
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster12
And treat those two impostors just the same;13
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken14
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,15
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,16
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:17
18
If you can make one heap of all your winnings19
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,20
And lose, and start again at your beginnings21
And never breathe a word about your loss;22
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew23

4
To serve your turn long after they are gone,24
And so hold on when there is nothing in you25
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'2627
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,28
'Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,29
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,30
If all men count with you, but none too much;31
If you can fill the unforgiving minute32
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,33
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,34
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!35

of the world during the Olympic Games. On the Olympic flag, the
rings appear on a white background. Combined in this way, the sixcolours of the flag (blue, yellow, black, green, red and white)represent all nations as they are the six colours that appear on the
national flags of the world.
This symbol is among the most widely recognised symbols in the
world!
OLYMPIC FLAME:
The Olympic flame is one of the best-known features of the Games.
From the moment the flame is lit, a very precise ritualis carried out:
The lighting - In memory of the Olympic Games ancientorigins, the flame is lit in Olympia(Greece) some months
before the opening of the Games. Only the suns rays can light
the Olympic flame.
The torch - A new torch is created for each edition of theGames. Each relay runner carries his or her own torch: it is the
flame which is passed from runner to runner and which cannot
be extinguished.
The relay route - Carried by relay from Olympia to the hostcity of the Games, the flame crosses different regions, countries
and continents. Along its route, the passing of the flame
announces to the inhabitants that the Olympic Games are on

new cultures and customs.

from the torch to the place where it will continue to burn for
the entire length of the Games. The flame is extinguished on the
final day of the Games at the closing ceremony.

1. Underline the transparent words in the following text.2. Read the text
(http://www.olympic.org/museum PDF on the Olympic Symbols
The Olympic Museum, 2ndEdition 2007)
The values of excellence, friendship and respect are the foundation
upon which the Olympic Movement brings together sport, culture
and education for the betterment of human beings.
The three core values of the Olympic Movement can be defined as
follows:
Excellence
To give ones best, on the field of play or in life. It is not only about
winning, but also about participating, making progress against
personal goals, striving to be and to do our best in our daily lives.
Friendship
To build a peaceful and better world thanks to sport, through
solidarity, team spirit, joy and optimism. To consider sport as a tool
for mutual understanding among individuals and people from all
over the world, despite their differences.
Respect
To respect oneself, ones body, to respect others, as well as rules and
regulations, to respect the environment. In relation to sport, respect

stands for fair play and for the fight against doping or any other
unethical behaviour.
These three core values are conveyed through the Olympic symbols.
1) The motto embodies excellence by encouraging athletes to strive
to do their best.
2) The flame symbolises friendship between peoples with the torch
relay usually travelling through different countries in the world.
3) The rings represent respect, bringing all nations and all fivecontinents together without discrimination. The principles shown
are universality and humanism.
These symbols are much more than emblems and people should
immediately be able to associate them with fundamental values for
sport and life in general.
FOLLOW-UP TASKS:
Design an emblem for the National Olympic Committee (NOC)of your country. The emblem you draw must feature some
characteristics of your country and include the Olympic rings.
Then find the real emblem and compare them!
Create a symbol that, in your opinion, represents peace in theworld thanks to sport. You could do a drawing or make acollage.
Thinkof a motto which best sums up your character, or thinkof a motto for your family, school or club. Explain the meaning
of this motto.

Londons Olympic story
Have the Olympic Games ever been held in your country? Right now,
people who live in London are getting ready for the 2012 Olympics
next year. London has already hosted the Olympics twice before and
this will make it the first city in history to have held three Olympic
games.
The first London Olympics in 1908
These games were going to be held in Rome but, because of a
volcano, Rome wasnt ready. London agreed to stage the games and
the White City Olympic stadium was built in just 10 months.
What was new?
New at these Olympics were the opening ceremony where athletes
paraded with their teams behind their flag. Only 22 countries took
part and the profits were just over 21,000!
The second London Olympics
Because of the second world war, the 1944 Olympics were cancelled.
Four years later the war was over and London was able to hold the
Games in 1948. Things were very different in London during these
Olympic Games and many years of war had left the UK poor and
hungry. People called them the Austerity Games. But there was still
some great sport and some exciting events!

What was new?
59 countries took part, more than at any other Olympics before andthe USA won the most medals with 84. For the first time, cameras
filmed the Games and broadcast them on television so that people
could watch them in their own homes.
The third London Olympics in 2012
The Games next year are going to be bigger, better and more exciting
than ever before. There will be more than 10,000 athletes from 204
countries taking part!
Whats going to be new?
London wants to make sure that the benefits of the Olympics dont
just last for a few weeks in summer but go on much longer. The
buildings have been made so that they can be used for different
things when the Games are over.
Its been 68 years since the Olympics were held in London, lets hopethey come back sooner next time!

The Olympic Park will host a rangeof exciting attractions and events
during the games. In the Olympic Park, there are 3
iconic buildings the Olympic
Stadium, the Aquatics Centre and
the Velodrome:
1) Olympic Stadium:
Will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and some ofthe most iconic events.
The design and build:
The Stadium is on an island site, surrounded by waterwayson three sides. Spectators will reach the venue via bridges.
The innovative flexible design of the Olympic Stadium meansits 80,000 capacity can be reduced after the Games. It has a
permanent lower tier with a capacity of 25,000.
Such a stadium has neverbeen attempted before.
The top ring of the Stadiumwas built using surplus gas
pipes a visual testament to
London 2012's efforts to
'reduce, reuse and recycle'.
Construction began in May2008 and was completed in
just under three years, in March 2011.
After the Games:
The Stadium is designed to be flexible enough toaccommodate a number of different requirements and
capacities in legacy.
It will retain athletics at its core, and also be a venue for othersporting, cultural and community events.
It will be the venue for the 2015 IAAF World Championships.2) Aquatics Centre:
-
7/27/2019 Material sobre Juegos olmpicos (ingls)
15/29
15
Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid. The design and build:
With a capacity of 17,500, the Aquatics Centres spectacularwave-like roof is 160m long and up to 80m wide.
The venue features a 50m competition pool, a 25mcompetition diving pool, a 50m warm-up pool and a dry
warm-up area for divers.
Construction on the venuebegan in July 2008 and
was completed in July
2011. The venues roof proved to
be one of the most
complex engineering
challenges of the Olympic
Park big build.
Its skeletal structure rests on just two concrete supports atthe northern end of the building and a supporting wall at its
southern end.
After the Games:
The Aquatics Centre will be transformed into a facility for thelocal community, clubs and schools, as well as elite
swimmers, attracting an anticipated 800,000 visitors a year.
All the pools have moveable booms and floors to createdifferent depths and pool sizes, so swimmers of all abilities
and experience can use it.
The two temporary wings will be removed reducing itscapacity to 2,500 although it will be possible to increase thevenue capacity for major competitions.
The venue will also feature a crche, family-friendly changingfacilities and a cafe, alongside a new public plaza in front of
the building.
3) Velodrome:
The Velodrome is one of the most sustainable and iconicvenues of the London 2012 Games.
-
7/27/2019 Material sobre Juegos olmpicos (ingls)
16/29
16
Sustainable choices have been made wherever possible; fromthe sourcing of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship
Council used on the track and external cladding, to theinstallation of a 100% naturally ventilated system that
eliminates the need for air
conditioning.
The design and build:
The Velodromes designincorporates natural
ventilation and lets in an
abundance of natural light, reducing the amount of
energy needed for artificial
lighting.
Its roof collects rainwater that will reduce mains water usageby more than 70 per cent.
The Velodrome has capacity for 6,000 spectators. A glass wallaround the venues perimeter between the lower and upper
tiers of the venues seating, will give spectators a 360 -degree
view of the Olympic Park. The choice of a cable-net roof design (which is strung with
steel cables in the manner of a tennis racket) reduced the
amount of material required and decreased construction time
by 20 weeks.
Construction of the Velodrome started in March 2009 andwas completed less than two years later in February 2011. It
was the first sporting venue to be finished, 18 months ahead
of the Games.
In April 2012 the Velodrome won an Architecture Award atan awards ceremony hosted by the Design Museum.
After the Games:
The venue will be handed over to the Lee Valley RegionalPark Authority and will form the heart of a new VeloPark for
use by the local community, clubs and elite athletes.
The VeloPark will also include the reconfigured BMX track, anew mountain bike track and a new road cycle circuit, as well
as a cafe, bike hire and cycle workshop facilities.

be super-woman to win the heptathlon! Its seven different events -
and you have two days to do them all: the high jump, the long jump,
the javelin, the shot put, the 100m hurdles, the 200m and the 800m.
Jessica Ennis is the UKs poster girl for the London Olympics - but is
she super-woman?
Jessica began athletics when she was ten years old. It was the
summer holidays. She says:
My mum and dad wanted me out of the house! She trained and
competed through school, then she went to university and studied
psychology. She became a professional athlete in 2005. In 2007 she
went to her first World Championships. She didnt get a medal - but
a lot of people noticed her. They knew she would be a champion
one day. In 2008 she had qualified to go to the Beijing Olympics, but
she never got there. She injured her right foot shortly before theGames. She thought her career was over.
But after a year Jessica was back - and she was better than ever. She
won Gold and became World Champion at Berlin in 2009. In 2010
she won Gold at the indoor World Championships. She was a double
world champion and the first British woman to win both outdoor
and indoor World titles. Later that year she won Gold in the
European Championships, too.
By this time everybody thought she was super-woman. They were
sure she would get gold in 2012. She was Britains Female Athlete
of the Year and she was everywhere - on the TV, on posters - even
in Madame Tussauds, the famous waxworks in London.
In August 2011, she went to the World Athletics Championships in
Daegu. She was hoping for Gold and she was hoping to keep her title
- but she didnt. She only got Silver. A Russian, Tatyana Chernova,
won the Gold and the title. It was Jessicas first defeat in two years.
