1 Otra vez entró Jesús en una sinagoga; y había allí un hombre que tenía una mano seca.

2 Y le observaban para ver si le sanaba en el día de reposo, para poder acusarle.

3 Y dijo al hombre que tenía la mano seca: Levántate y ponte aquí en medio.

4 Entonces les dijo: ¿Es lícito en el día de reposo hacer bien o hacer mal, salvar una vida o matar? Pero ellos guardaban silencio.

5 Y mirándolos en torno con enojo, entristecido por la dureza de sus corazones, dijo al hombre: Extiende tu mano. Y él la extendió, y su mano quedó sana.

6 Pero cuando los fariseos salieron, enseguida comenzaron a hacer planes con el partido de Herodes, para matar a Jesús.

1 Again he entered the synagogue. There was a man there who had a withered hand.

2 They watched him closely to see if he would cure him on the Sabbath so that they might accuse him.

3 He said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up here before us.”

4 Then he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it? ” But they remained silent.

5 Looking around at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out and his hand was restored.

6 The Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him to put him to death.

Reflections on Mark 3:1 - 6 Reflexiónes en Marcos 3:1 - 6 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Jan. 23, 2008 Jesus was grieved at hardness of heart of the Pharisees in the story we read today. In the synagogue they watched Jesus closely to see if he would cure on the Sabbath, that they might accuse him. Meanwhile, they did nothing to help the man with the withered hand.

Jesús estaba afligido al ver la dureza de corazón de los fariseos en la historia que leemos hoy. En la sinagoga estaban espiando a Jesús para ver si curaba en sábado, y poderlo acusar. Mientras tanto, ellos mismos hacían nada para ayudar al hombre con la mano tullida. No hacían y no dejaban hacer.

They thought they were being super-smart by doing nothing. They thought that by keeping silent they were safe. In this way they betrayed their hard-heartedness. It shows that silence is not always the proper response to a situation.

Pensaban ser muy astutos al hacer nada. Pensaban que al quedarse silencios ellos quedaban muy seguros. Pero de esta manera traicionaron su dureza de corazón. Esto muestra que el silencio no siempre es el responseo propio para tal y cual situación.

Silence can be passive resistance. It can be a form of stonewalling against the Lord and those who follow him. It can be blocking out the Lord with coldness of heart. It can be a refusal to praise God by not doing his holy will.

El silencio puede ser lo que se llama resistencia pasiva. Puede ser una forma de presentarle a Dios o a los que lo siguen una cara como de piedra. (Alguien por allí dijó: “tenían cara de perro.”) En efecto es bloquear al Señor con un corazón frío. Puede ser un modo de negarle alabanzas al Señor al no hacer su santa voluntad.

Like the Pharisees, some just stand there, like a statue, showing no signs of life. There is no response to the plight of the poor. They do practically nothing about the challenges of the day. Such are called DOA’s (Dead on Arrival). And if we can carry this image a little further, we could say “rigo mortis” has begun to set in!

Como esos fariseos, hay algunos que parecen que nada más están allí parados, como estatuas, sin mostrar ninguna seña de vida. Ni dicen sí, ni dicen no. No le hace cual sea el desafío del día, no se registra ninguna responsa. Se llaman los M-A-L’s (Muertos Al Llegar.) Y si nos permiten seguir esta figura más allá, se podría decir que en cierto sentido ha comenzado lo que se llama “rigo mortis” (dureza de muerte.)

Let’s examine why there sometimes seems to be no response to the challenge of the gospel. Could it be that we have done well with the status-quo and don’t want to ‘rock the boat’, for fear of losing our hard-earned prosperity? Maybe it is laziness. And then again, it could be that we are shy or timid, and don’t like to stand out. Perhaps it is because we have other priorities.

Vamos a examinar el porqué de esta falta de responso al desafío del evangelio. Puede ser que algunas personas les ha ido bien con cosas como están. No quieren cambios que perjudiquen lo que han ganado con tanto esfuerzo. Quizás sea la pereza. Pero también puede ser que son tímidos, y no les gusta resaltar mucho. Quizás es que tienen otras prioridades.

Callousness of heart comes from many years of bad practice, or lack of good practices. It comes from many year of being hardened towards others even when they are hurting. Perhaps it is due to religious practice where they were not challenged and as a result are barren in works of mercy. Pope Benedict once said: any liturgy without practical application is fragile. Or perhaps they were challenged but failed to respond.

Dureza de corazón viene de muchos años de no practicar ningún cariño hacia los demás aunque estén doliendo. Quizás sea que la religión no daba el reto que resultara en obras de misericordia. Recuerdo que el Papa Benedicto XVI dijo una vez que una liturgia que no tiene aplicaciones de caridad es muy frágil. Pero quizás el reto estuvo allí pero la persona no la escucho por cualquier razón.

Jesus made every effort to awaken the sympathy of the Pharisees. He asked them: “Is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath? ” No answer. “Is it lawful to save a life, or to kill it? ” No answer. They remained silent. We ask forgiveness if we are guilty of doing the same thing.

Jesús hizo todo lo posible para despertar la simpatía de los fariseos. Les preguntó: “¿Es licito hacer el bien o hacer el mal en el sábado? ” Silencio. “¿Es licito salvar a una vida, o matarla? ” Ninguna respuesta. Permanecieron silencios. Pide perdón de Dios si hemos hecho lo mismo.

This aroused a passionate response from Jesus. He looked at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart. Instead of thanking the Lord for healing the man with a withered hand, they went out and immediately plotted to put him to death. Their true self finally surfaced.

Eso causó un responso apasionado de Jesús. Los vio con coraje y se afligió con la dureza de sus corazones. En vez de darle gracias al Señor por sanar al hombre de la mano tullida, inmediatamente salieron para hacer planes para matarlo. Lo que eran en verdad finalmente salió a la vista.

Yesterday was the 35th anniversary of Roe and Wade, the law that permits abortion in the USA. Fifty million babies have been aborted in that time. As I watched the March for Life in Washington DC on TV, I thanked the Lord that so many showed up in spite of the cold. I also wondered how so many people could allow so many abortions. It must be coldness of heart on a big scale.

Ayer fue el trigésimo quinto aniversario de la Ley Roe y Wade, que hizo legal al aborto en los EEUU. Cincuenta millones han sido abortados en ese tiempo. Al estar viendo la Marcha de la Vida en Washington DC por la TV, le di gracias a Dios por tanta gente que estuvo allí dando testigo no obstante al frío. También sentí tristeza al pensar que hay tanta gente permitiendo tantos abortos. Han de tener una dureza de corazón en gran escala.

Our country is bleeding. There are many wounded men and women who need Jesus in their hearts. For each aborted fetus there is at least a man and a woman who are intimately affected. Crisis Pregnancy Centers help women heal.

Nuestro pueblo esta sangrando. Hay tantos hombres y mujeres heridas que necesitan a Jesús en sus corazones. Para cada niño abortado hay a lo menos un hombre y una mujer que están íntimamente afectados. Los Centros de Crisis de Embarazo ayudan a las mujeres sanar.

We need a place for men to go, who have been wounded, when their babies were killed without their approval. They regret being deprived of their fatherhood without their approval. We pray for them.

Necesitamos a un lugar donde los hombres puedan ir, cuando son heridos, al ver sus hijos matados sin su aprobación. A ellos se les ha quitado su oportunidad de ser padres. Rezamos por ellos.

Let us have the compassion of Christ for those wounded in abortions. Let us pray for their repentance and conversion. Let us help them deal with the bad decisions they made, and help them receive the forgiveness of God. Their hearts withered when they made a negative sinful decision to abort their babies. Jesus wants to heal them, so they can be reconciled with their babies and with God.

Hay que tener la compasión de Cristo por los heridos por el aborto. Oremos por su conversión y arrepentimiento. Ayudémoslos tratar con esa mala decisión que hicieron, y ayudémoslos a recibir el perdón de Dios. Sus corazones estaban tullidos cuando hicieron esa decisión negativa y pecadora al cometer aborto. Jesús los quiere sanar.

In our community (Our Lady’s Youth Center),we are Pro Life in a big way. We sent two members of our community who to the March for Life in San Francisco: Gaby Frederico and Perla. We congratulate them.

En nuestra comunidad (Centro Juvenil de Nuestra Señora), somos Pro-Vida de una manera grande. Mandamos a dos miembros a la Marcha de Vida de San Francisco: Gaby Frederico y Perla. Las felicitamos.

And we acknowledge and thank our community members who pray at the abortion clinics several times a week, (as the law permits), rescuing many babies, and conducting retreats to help those who are suffering from the effects of abortion. I am their spiritual director.

También queremos reconocer y darle gracias y apoyo a los miembros de nuestra comunidad que rezan enfrente de las clínicas de aborto, según permite la ley, varios días por semana. Han rescatado a muchos niños. También conducen retiros para ayudar a los afligidos. Soy su director espiritual.

In the City of Juarez, Mexico, there are several members of our community that were involved in Marcha de la Vida, and exhibit our Pro Life placards at the International Bridges, in an effort to raise the consciousness of the people.

En Ciudad Juárez hay varios miembros de nuestra comunidad que encabezan grupos que rezan en los puentes internacionales con los retratos grandes de niños abortados para levantar la conscientización de la gente. Esos retratos se han mostrado en otras partes de México.
