Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated the first Sunday of the Month directly following the 10 am Mass. One baptismal preparation class is required. The preparation class seeks to help parents understand the Rite of Bap-tism and to prepare and support parents in the on-going faith formation of their child. Please call the parish office to schedule an appointment for the baptism class.

Jesus doesn't answer the question put to Him in this Sunday’s Gospel. It profits us nothing to spec-ulate how many will be saved. What we need to know is what He tells us today—how to enter into salvation and how urgent it is to strive now, before the Master closes the door. As this parable opens, Luke reminds us that Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem. He is teaching as he goes. A question from the crowd gives Jesus the chance to make a prophetic statement. Jesus answers that they must strive in the time remaining to enter through the narrow door because many will be trying to get in but won't be strong enough. He then moves to a parable about another door. (The translation says “gate” then “door,” but the same Greek word is used.) Once all those entering the master's house are in and he locks the door, there will be no way for others to get in. Those who do not make it through the narrow door will be cast out to where there is wailing and grinding of teeth. The salvation of God will be universal; it will not belong to one nation or people but be offered to everyone. The teaching of Jesus in the Gospel echoes this new understanding. Those who thought they would be allowed into the home of the master because they have some casual acquaintance with him will be disappointed when others may enter and they are turned away. Being part of the masters household requires more than a social relationship. Although the invitation to the Kingdom of God is freely given, our response to such a gift cannot be a smugness that we deserved it and others did not. The author of Hebrews speaks of paying attention to “the discipline of the Lord.” The word discipline does not mean “punishment,” but rather “wise instruction” – even “healing.” Just as a son or daughter pays attention to a parent’s discipline, so the follower of Christ attends to his teachings in order to attain the “peaceful fruit of righteousness.” The answer to the question if only a few will be saved is no. In the end, many will be saved, but many who thought they would be saved will not be saved. The parable is a prophetic warning to repentance in order to enter the kingdom. Merciful like the Father

“Live your life joyfully!” and do “something beautiful for God.” Words for each of us to live our daily lives. I was reading the article Mother Teresa and Doing Some-thing Beautiful for God by James Martin, SJ and want to share these thoughts for each of us as we continue to live our Year of Mercy. Father spent some time work-ing at a hospice run by the Missionaries of Charity. He shares when he was about ready to throw in the towel, one of the sisters would smile and make a joke, or tell me what a great job he was doing. And he said, “I knew that I couldn’t let the sis-

ters down. The sisters got me through the first few weeks, and after that I was gradually able to en-ter more fully into the work (though I never, ever liked clipping toenails). In time, I grew to know the men at Our Lady Queen of Peace as individuals, not simply as bodies to be washed. Understand-ing that “the poor” and “the sick” and “the homeless” were not categories but individuals.” What he saw was a cheerfulness that communicated the joy of their vocation and the joy of serving Christ. It had a practical application, too. Their attitude was a gift to those poor who had known mostly mis-ery and rejection in life. Their goal was to make all feel that they are loved,” “If we went to them with a sad face, we would only make them much more depressed.” “True holiness,” Mother Teresa had written, “consists in doing God’s will with a smile.” That is a difficult statement for many to accept, since it’s so close to the banal “offer it up for God” spirituality. But Mother Teresa, whose interior life was full of darkness, put into practice what she believed to great effect. So did her sisters. “Live your life joyfully!” and do “something beautiful for God.”
