GLOBAL WARMINGW e usually think that the greenhouse effect is ma n ma de, but actually it is a naturalphenomenon. G ases in the earth's atmosphere trap som e of the heat from the sun andthis keeps the plan et warm eriough for life to survive. H owe ver, man is responsible forthe enhanced greenho use effect . This is what cau ses global,wa rming. Burning fuelslike wood, coa1 or petrol produces carbon dioxide (C02) and other gases. The mixtureof gases in the atm osphere becomes too concentrated, too m uch heat is trapped andthe earth gets hotter. The only way to stop g lobal warming is to reduce the emission ofthese gases. Why is global warming such a problem? Most scientists agree that global warming ma y have very serious consequences for lifeon the planet.Firstly, the increase in temperature may m elt the ice in the N orth Pole. As a result, sealevels may rise, which might cause floods in some countries. As it becomes warmer, more water will evaporate from seas and lakes. This might cause more clouds andmore rain in some regioris. Some scientists think that there will be more storms andhurricanes as a result of global warming. At the same time, areas which are dry nowma y have less rain. Farm ers might not be able to grow traditional crops because therernight be too much or too little rain. Finally, certain diseases might increase. Forexample, some scientists say that another 20% of the world's population might live inareas where you can ge t malaria.1.
